Inspired by a goal of “putting on a show” for the movie stars and celebrities sitting courtside at Madison Square Garden, Jayson Tatum paid tribute in the best way possible: dramatic action before the opening credits could roll. Declining any offers, evidently, of easing his way into February 8, 2025’s clash of Eastern Conference elites, Tatum attacks a first-minute pick-and-roll, unleashing a pick-and-roll dribble that forces Karl-Anthony Towns’ participation in an “electric slide” of sorts. Unwilling to be slowed on his path to the rim, Tatum meets his next challenger in Precious Achiuwa, taking the New York Knicks’ equally-sized center for a ride with a two-handed power jam, opening the game’s scoring in style. Outstanding enough against the 2024-25 Knicks to leave some wondering if it were personal, Tatum, merely wanting to avenge a previous game's loss, emerged forcefully with 40 points (on 13-of-26 shooting), alongside six rebounds, four assists, and seven trifectas. Scaling ladders in more ways than one, Tatum’s masterpiece in the primetime win also elevated him to No. 9 on the Boston Celtics’ all-time scoring list.
