Kenyon Martin

Finding numerous ways to reward the New Jersey Nets’ faith in making him the 2000 NBA Draft’s first player selected, Kenyon Martin preferred one method above all else: being the last player standing during physical around-the-rim battles. Always game for a strength-based battle in the low post, Martin eventually works himself free for an entry pass after the Indiana Pacers elect to “front” his post-up attempts. Giving no second thought to his intentions, even after recognizing Jermaine O’Neal — No. 1 in blocks (228) in 2000-01 — roadblocking the rim with his 6-foot-11 frame, Martin merely extends the ball far enough to scratch his back, powering into a passionate two-handed facial. Such demonstrative acts eventually helped plant the seeds for Martin’s fruitful future in New Jersey colors, headlined by a pair of NBA Finals appearances and an All-Star nod just a few years later. Helping steer a win over the then-defending Eastern Conference champions in the meantime on March 4, 2001, Martin was excellent, turning in 19 points, six rebounds, five assists, two steals, and one block.
