Always a safe guarantee to return to the WNBA’s following season with some new or improved wrinkle in her game, Sabrina Ionescu, in 2024, made the floater her maneuver of choice. On August 30, 2024, with the New York Liberty a few buckets away from closing the door on the Seattle Storm’s comeback attempt, the three-time All-Star ran — or rather, fell — into a type of floater that likely hasn’t gotten many practice reps. Hunting for an advantageous look in isolation despite the best efforts of Gabby Williams, Jewell Loyd, and a dribble that wouldn’t fully cooperate, Ionescu nonetheless utilizes craftiness, working an up-and-under, step-through move to at least let fly a respectable attempt. Personifying the term “by any means,” Ionescu, literally down to her knees, recovers her own miss before banking a floater ahead of Nneka Ogwumike’s reach. Later admitting to not knowing that she was on the ground, Ionescu, calling it the “most open” she had been all night, discovered enough impromptu brilliance to help influence a victory over the Seattle Storm. Ionescu’s night would conclude with 25 points (on 7-of-16), eight rebounds, eight assists, and three 3-pointers.
