The third overall pick of the Houston Rockets broke the hearts of the New Orleans Pelicans when he pulled the trigger on an off-balance 3-pointer that cleared the outstretched fingertips of Naji Marshall and landed in the bottom of the basket with 0.1 seconds to play. The clutch shot turned a one-point New Orleans lead into a 114-112 victory for the Rockets on March 17, 2023 as Smith Jr. finished the night with 11 points and eight rebounds. The All-Rookie Second Team member averaged 12.8 points and 7.2 rebounds over the course of 79 games in 2022-23.
