At 7-foot-2, Artis Gilmore is known by basketball historians to be one of the NBA’s first truly great gentle giants — that is, until you tried to score on him. Despite his low-key demeanor, the A-Train was a force of nature down low, issuing a reminder to the Denver Nuggets what happens when you enter his domain. The six-time All-Star completely neutralizes a layup attempt, meeting the hopeful scorer at the rim and earning a demonstrative block off the glass. Also an elite rebounder who averaged double digits over the course of a Hall of Fame career, Gilmore remained a force of nature at age 37, providing 24 points, five rebounds and three blocks in a San Antonio Spurs battle on December 27, 1986.
