Depending on one’s viewpoint and timing, Dwight Howard’s uniform during March 21, 2018, with some imagination, took on multiple different forms. Throughout the first half, one could easily recognize the Charlotte Hornets’ classic white and teal-themed attire; by the second, it became slightly more difficult, with dark-colored Brooklyn Nets jerseys hanging on his back as he snagged rebound-after-rebound. By night’s end, the eight-time All-Star’s metamorphosis had introduced one final, vintage form: a red, yellow, and blue “S” — for “Superman” — draped across his chest. Rescuing his team from a 23-point hole, Howard merely tightened his cape and reverted his form to the Hall of Fame-bound big with an NBA Finals appearance and four top-five finishes in Most Valuable Player voting to his name. A different man after halftime, Howard recorded a 19-point, 12-rebound showing in the third quarter alone, ultimately ending his night with 32 points (on 10-of-17) shooting, 30 rebounds, and ferocious at-the-rim finishes all throughout the late-season win. Powerful in taking advantage of a Brooklyn Nets depth chart offering just one player taller than 6-foot-7, Howard became NBA history’s second player since 1982 to record a 30-point, 30-rebound game, and just its eighth player all-time.
