Clyde Drexler

On paper, the acquisition of Clyde Drexler may have been deemed a late-season power move for the Houston Rockets. Yet, as the records, and the highlight reels from Game One of the 1995 Western Conference Finals confirm, the presence of “The Glide” couldn’t have come at a more opportune time. Successful in doing his part to keep the paint clogged against the San Antonio Spurs, the 10-time All-Star creates just enough to havoc to force a turnover, seemingly positioning his teammates for the opportunity at a two-on-two fastbreak. Superhero-esque in his delayed arrival onto the scene, Drexler utilizes his hustle to tilt the scales, taking a bounce pass mid-stride before leaving Sean Elliott grounded after an explosive one-handed facial. Drexler’s memorable jam helped Houston keep hold on a slight third quarter lead, an edge they would eventually use to guide a one-point win and a series-opening victory on May 22, 1995. Eventually co-starring on NBA history’s first-ever team to beat 50-win teams in every round, Drexler shined on a redemptive West Finals stage, producing 25 points (on 10-of-21 shooting), 12 rebounds, three assists, one steal, one block, and one 3-pointer.
