The Greek Freak makes incredibly short work of the Houston Rockets in his second game of the 2022-23 season, throwing down a monster one-handed dunk in transition despite being blanketed by three defenders. The Milwaukee Bucks’ two-time MVP and six-time All-Star bulldozed the Rockets for 44 points on 17-of-21 shooting in just 28 minutes. He added 12 rebounds and three assists in Milwaukee’s 125-105 triumph on October 22, 2022.

When Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is feeling it, no lead is safe. With the Atlanta Hawks holding a double digit second half lead, the Oklahoma City Thunder’s budding star gets to work, driving into the lane before hitting Onyeka Okongwu with a head-turning spin move and finishing the play with a two-handed dunk. Gilgeous-Alexander scored 23 of his game-high 35 points after halftime, along with six rebounds, five assists, two steals and a flawless 15-for-15 mark from the foul line to help the Thunder storm back to claim a 121-114 victory on December 5, 2022.

Joel Embiid has the power to make even the biggest stars in the NBA look overmatched. The five-time All-Star and 2022 scoring champion shares a glimpse at why he’s been selected to the league’s All-Defensive Second Team three times, as he thwarts a Giannis Antetokounmpo drive with a forceful rejection. Embiid brought it on both ends against the Milwaukee Bucks, as his 32 points, 11 rebounds, eight assists and three blocks helped the Philadelphia 76ers earn a 110-102 victory on November 18, 2022.

Pascal Siakam recorded three triple-doubles in the first six seasons of his NBA career — he needed just two games to get one in Year 7. After waiting for the right time to strike against the Brooklyn Nets, the Toronto Raptors forward motors toward the basket, corrals a dime from Scottie Barnes and punctuates the possession with a one-handed slam over Kevin Durant. Siakam scored a game-high 37 points and added 12 rebounds and 11 assists in the October 21, 2022 battle.

The first six minutes of Jalen Williams’ career turned out to be pretty perfect. After the Oklahoma City Thunder made him the 12th pick in the draft, Williams rewards their faith, passing up a three-point attempt to instead take a run right at Karl-Anthony Towns. Williams puts the ball on the floor with his left hand, driving hard toward the basket and getting the best of the Minnesota Timberwolves’ three-time All-Star with a baseline floater. Williams made both of his field-goal attempts and added an assist during his October 19, 2022 professional debut.

Many NBA rookies are brought along slowly into their new team’s rotations — Keegan Murray isn’t one of them. The fourth overall pick and Summer League MVP sat out the Sacramento Kings’ first contest but made a major impact in game No. 2, gathering a bounce pass from De’Aaron Fox and calmly knocking down a three-pointer for the first bucket of his career. Murray was far from finished, as he connected on seven of his 10 shots for 19 points — the third-most by a Kings rookie in a season debut — while adding five rebounds, two assists, two blocks and three triples in a battle against the LA Clippers on October 22, 2022.

It took all of one game for Jabari Smith Jr. to make an immediate impact with the Houston Rockets. A few months after Houston made him the third pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, the 6-foot-11 rookie rewards his team’s faith in him by showcasing his deft shooting touch from long range. Against the Atlanta Hawks in his first professional game, Smith Jr. crosses halfcourt, takes a pass from a teammate and without hesitation rises up from way behind the arc to drain one of his three triples. The Rockets may have lost the game, but they left Atlanta feeling confident about the future after Smith Jr. posted 17 points and seven rebounds on October 19, 2022.

It’s always nice to start your NBA career off with a win, especially if you play a big role in the victory. Jalen Duren immediately checks both things off his list for the Detroit Pistons, in one fell swoop corralling a steal and firing an outlet pass up the court to teammate Cory Joseph, who then waits a beat before hitting a cutting Duren in stride. The 13th overall pick in the draft finishes the play by posterizing a helpless Orlando Magic defender. Duren gave his new squad a big lift off the bench, tallying 14 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks in 22 minutes, allowing the Pistons to open the season with a 113-109 win on October 19, 2022.

A double-double in your NBA debut? Not too shabby for Utah Jazz rookie Walker Kessler, who came to play in his first career game against the Denver Nuggets. The 7-footer runs the floor with teammate Collin Sexton, who drops off a pass at the foul line and leaves Kessler face-to-face with two-time reigning MVP Nikola Jokić. Kessler shows no fear, taking one dribble before pivoting his way around the Joker for a hard-earned layup. The 22nd-overall pick made all five of his field-goal attempts for 12 points while adding 10 rebounds, an assist and a steal, helping Utah prevail 123-102 on October 19, 2022.

Good things happen when rookies show no fear. Tari Eason shows right away that he isn’t afraid of the big stage, as the 17th overall pick of the Houston Rockets catches a long pass from a teammate at the halfcourt logo, then takes flight for a thunderous dunk two steps inside the free-throw line. Despite only playing 15 minutes, Eason made a strong first impression, connecting on 4 of 6 field goal attempts for eight points while grabbing seven rebounds in the October 19, 2022 showdown with the Atlanta Hawks.

Get ready and stay ready if you wanna stick in the league. Immediately after recording the first steal of his career in his NBA debut, 16th overall pick AJ Griffin takes a bounce pass from Dejounte Murray and shows zero hesitation rising up to drain a three-pointer on his first professional shot. Griffin packed a ton of action in his six minutes off the bench, connecting on three of his field goals — including 2-for-3 from downtown — against the Charlotte Hornets on October 23, 2022.

Although tempting to fire up a shot in your first NBA minutes, Dyson Daniels instead opts for the more unselfish route. The eighth overall selection in the draft proves immediately helpful to his new New Orleans Pelicans teammates, coming around a screen and driving into the lane against the Brooklyn Nets. Rather than force the issue against multiple defenders, Daniels showcases his distributing ability by dropping off an over-the-shoulder flick to Larry Nance Jr. for a jumper in the paint. Daniels picked up two assists in three minutes, leaving his mark on the Pelicans’ 130-108 season-opening victory on October 19, 2022.

As the third-youngest team entering the 2022-23 season, opportunities abound for San Antonio Spurs rookies. Malaki Branham is one of those players. The 20th overall pick makes his professional debut in San Antonio’s seventh game of the season, scoring the first points of his career on a catch-and-shoot three-pointer off an assist from Keldon Johnson. Branham contributed two rebounds and assists in addition to his five points in a 19-minute run off the bench in San Antonio’s 107-98 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on October 30, 2022.

Count Max Christie among the few who can say they scored their first career basket against the defending NBA champions. Going toe-to-toe with the Golden State Warriors, the 35th overall pick checks into the game in the final minutes and lines up a pure three-pointer that’s all net with a helpful assist from fellow rookie Cole Swider. Christie made his only attempt of the game, finishing his first two minutes as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers with three points and one rebound on October 18, 2022.

From second-round pick to immediate rotation contributor — not too shabby for Andrew Nembhard. The first pick of the 2022 NBA Draft’s second round showcases his unselfish playmaking ability against the San Antonio Spurs, driving just inside the three-point arc before flicking a beauty of an alley-oop pass to fellow reserve Isaiah Jackson for the throwdown. Nembhard logged 30 minutes of action in his NBA debut, contributing 14 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals in the October 21, 2022 contest.

Jake LaRavia was so fired up for his NBA debut that he managed to contribute a little bit of everything. Matched up against the New York Knicks, the 19th overall selection in the draft makes an impact on multiple fronts for the Memphis Grizzlies, first ripping a steal right from Cam Reddish’s hands before firing a long-range missile up the court to new teammate Brandon Clarke for a transition layup. In just 13 minutes of action, LaRavia tallied five points, two rebounds and one assist, steal and block apiece in the Grizzlies’ thrilling 115-112 overtime triumph on October 19, 2022.

When Memphis Grizzlies rookie Kennedy Chandler gets his pocket picked by McKinley Wright IV bringing the ball up the floor, he sets out for revenge. Rather than concede a fastbreak layup to the Dallas Mavericks, the 38th overall pick in the draft turns on the jets, chasing Wright IV down and blocking his shot not once but twice. The Mavericks won big, but Chandler’s defensive tenacity was a bright spot for Memphis as he added two assists to his two rejections in his first nine minutes of action on October 22, 2022.

Second time's the charm. Seeking the first points of his NBA career, Nikola Jović couldn’t believe his good fortune when he found himself wide open under the basket. The Miami Heat puts up a shot attempt then recovers an offensive board in time to convert the putback opportunity. It was the only basket of the night for the 27th-overall pick in the draft, who finished with two points, two rebounds and a steal in 14 minutes of action in Miami’s 119-98 road victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on October 26, 2022.

Steph Curry’s shooting and scoring abilities get their just praise — but how about some love for the way the Golden State Warriors star gets his buckets? Granted an opportunity to strike from the corner, Curry sets his sight on the rim, splitting two defenders with a smooth behind-the-back maneuver, then finishes at the cup with a layup. The four-time champion scores two of his game-high 24 points on the play while also chipping in six rebounds, 10 assists, two steals and five triples in his squad’s 111-101 win on November 18, 2022.

Players selected in the second round of the NBA Draft understand that they need to do more than just score points to earn a role in a rotation. Caleb Houstan received the message. The 32nd overall pick by the Orlando Magic proves instantly that he’s not afraid to defend and do the dirty work, sticking to Bojan Bogdanović like glue on a drive to the rim before rejecting the Detroit Pistons forward’s layup attempt. Houston additionally grabbed three boards in the October 19, 2022 contest.

A healthy Anthony Davis is double trouble for the opposition. Playing in his first game since an injury forced him to shut it down early a season ago, Davis proves just how scary he can be against the defending champion Golden State Warriors. First, the eight-time All-Star deposits a difficult floater off an inbound pass, then uses all of his lengthy 6-foot-10 frame to pick off a lazy Steph Curry pass on the ensuing trip up the floor. Davis then beats everyone in a race to the hoop, dropping in a layup while absorbing contact for an and-one opportunity. The Warriors won the game, but Los Angeles Lakers fans have to be feeling good about Davis’ 27-point, six-rebound, four-steal effort on October 18, 2022.

The two-time reigning MVP has something special planned for the Houston Rockets, catching the ball in the post before burying a turnaround baseline jumper in rhythm on just one foot. The four-time All-Star tormented the Rockets all night, scoring 32 points on 11-of-17 shooting — his third time hitting 30 points in the past four games — while also grabbing 12 rebounds and dishing out eight assists in the Denver Nuggets’ 129-113 victory on November 28, 2022.

Trailing by three points with 1.3 seconds remaining in regulation, Matt Ryan was subbed into the game with one objective — tie the ballgame. Mission accomplished for the Los Angeles Lakers newcomer. Off a perfectly-executed inbound pass from Austin Reaves, the sharpshooting Ryan, in his Top Shot debut, has just enough time to set his feet and force overtime with a corner three-pointer directly in front of the Lakers’ bench. Ryan played a critical role for the Lakers in just his sixth career game, chipping in 11 points, two rebounds, an assist and three triples in a much-needed 120-117 win over the New Orleans Pelicans on November 2, 2022.

Following a thunderous James rejection of Paul George, Austin Reaves scoops up the loose ball and motors the other way in transition before lobbing a flawless alley-oop pass to Lonnie Walker IV, who finishes the slam to get the home crowd on its feet. Reaves had an effective 22-minute run off the bench, posting four points, four rebounds and two assists in the Los Angeles Lakers’ intra-city rivalry game against the LA Clippers on October 20, 2022.

New season, same old Damian Lillard. The six-time All-Star is already in midseason form in the early stages of his 11th season with the Portland Trail Blazers, breaking the hearts of opposing teams thanks to his impeccably clutch shooting. Against the high-powered Phoenix Suns, Lillard does what he does best, using a dizzying array of dribbles as he hunts for his shot. Multiple defenders give chase to no avail, as Lillard unleashes a 20-footer with a high degree of difficulty that finds its home in the bottom of the net. It was the 41st time in Lillard’s career that he exploded for 40 or more in a game, extinguishing the Suns with 41 points, seven rebounds and three assists in Portland’s 113-111 overtime victory on October 21, 2022.

Tyrese Haliburton was a revelation in 26 games for the Indiana Pacers after a midseason acquisition in February 2022. To the delight of Pacers fans, the talented third-year point guard has picked up right where he left off to open the 2022-23 season. In Indiana’s first game against the Washington Wizards, Haliburton pushes the ball up the court and takes on all comers, using a yo-yo-dribble-hesi combination to fool the defense before clearing a path to the rim and throwing down a dunk. Haliburton scored a game-high 26 points to go with four rebounds and seven assists on October 19, 2022.

The NBA’s top-rated defense didn’t stand a chance with a confident Anthony Davis in the building. The Milwaukee Bucks have been particularly stingy during the 2022-23 campaign, but that doesn’t matter when LeBron James finds Davis on a kickout behind the arc. The eight-time All-Star breezes by Brook Lopez with a head fake before barreling toward the bucket and dropping the hammer with a powerful dunk. Davis’ season-high of 44 points — along with 10 rebounds, four assists and three blocks — carved up the Bucks’ vaunted defense in a thrilling 133-129 upset victory on December 2, 2022. 

Fresh off achieving a national championship in college, Christian Braun has brought an unselfish, winning style of basketball with him to the Denver Nuggets. Against the Utah Jazz, the rookie shows he’s willing to do whatever it takes to secure a victory, fearlessly stepping in front of Malik Beasley to turn a wide-open dunk into a ferocious rejection. Braun continued to make an impact off the Nuggets bench, chipping in 10 points, six rebounds, an assist and a block in Denver’s 117-101 triumph on October 28, 2022.

In just his sixth professional game, Mark Williams gave the Charlotte Hornets an exciting glimpse into their future. Making his Top Shot debut, the 15th overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft sends a Josh Giddey shot into the crowd with a merciless rejection at the rim. Williams shot a sparkling 7-for-7 for a career-high 17 points and 13 rebounds, along with two assists, two steals and two blocks in 21 productive minutes off the bench in his squad’s 121–113 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder on December 29, 2022.

Jaylen Brown welcomed Donovan Mitchell to the Eastern Conference the best way he knows how — by putting him on a poster. Playing in just his fifth game with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Mitchell receives a rude awakening courtesy of the Boston Celtics’ 2021 All-Star. When Brown picks off a Mitchell bounce pass, he and teammate Marcus Smart motor the other way on a 2-on-1 advantage. Brown collects a bounce pass and then takes flight, slamming an angry one-handed dunk on top of his helpless opponent. Brown put together a solid performance of 32 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals on October 28, 2022.

Anthony Edwards makes magic happen at both ends for the Minnesota Timberwolves, first recording an unforgiving block on the Miami Heat’s Max Strus before quickly finding the ball back in his hands while leading the transition attack. The first-overall selection of the 2020 NBA Draft again comes face-to-face with Strus, breaking him down off the dribble atop the key before launching a shifty stepback triple that’s all net. Edwards posted 22 points, seven rebounds, four assists, four steals and four three-pointers in his squad’s 105-101 victory on November 21, 2022.

Charging straight into the lane against three San Antonio Spurs defenders is not for the faint of heart — but it is for Zion Williamson. The New Orleans Pelicans All-Star forward scoops up a bounce pass on the elbow and makes his move, putting the ball on the floor and muscling his way to a layup despite spinning his way into a traffic jam underneath the basket. Williamson poured in a season-high 32 points on 14-of-18 from the field to go along with 11 rebounds and two steals in his squad’s 129-110 win on November 23, 2022.

No Joel Embiid, no problem for Tyrese Maxey and the Philadelphia 76ers. With the reigning scoring champion out with an injury against the Toronto Raptors, Philly’s third-year guard stepped up with a career night north of the border. When Maxey is confronted by Fred VanVleet and a rapidly-draining shot clock, he fires up a desperation corner triple that finds nothing but the bottom of the net. Maxey exploded for a career-high 44 points and nine three-pointers, while shooting 15-for-20, grabbing eight rebounds and dishing four assists in his squad’s convincing 112-90 win on October 28, 2022.

Donovan Mitchell’s honeymoon with the Cleveland Cavaliers continued against the Los Angeles Lakers. Taking advantage of a favorable one-on-one matchup with Austin Reaves, Mitchell hits his defender with some slick dribbles before suddenly pulling up for a stepback triple that helps the Cavs pull away late in the fourth quarter. Mitchell logged his second 40-point performance of the season, posting 43 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals in Cleveland’s 116-102 triumph on December 6, 2022.

If real life was a video game then Zach LaVine was shooting fireballs in Philadelphia. Playing against James Harden must have filled the two-time All-Star with inspiration as he puts on a dizzying dribble display before hitting a helpless Tobias Harris with Harden’s famed step-back three-pointer. The triple was one of many for a can’t miss LaVine, who scored 41 points on 14 of 19 shooting — including a staggering 11-for-13 mark behind the arc — along with two rebounds, six assists and two steals in the Chicago Bulls’ 126-112 win over the Philadelphia 76ers on January 6, 2023. The 11 threes are the second-most in franchise history as LaVine now holds the top two spots on that list all while ending Philly’s 11-game home win streak.

Never underestimate James Harden’s ability to come up with creative new ways of making plays for his Philadelphia 76ers teammates. Back in Houston on the court he called home for parts of nine seasons, the 2018 MVP shifts into facilitator mode when he whips a low-to-the-ground bounce pass to a cutting Shake Milton, who finishes the possession with an easy layup. The 10-time All-Star managed 21 points, four rebounds, seven assists, two steals and four triples in Philly’s overtime battle against the Houston Rockets on December 5, 2022.

One year after his breakout campaign, Jordan Poole continues to evolve offensively. Pressed into starting duty for a resting Klay Thompson, the fourth-year guard keeps the Golden State Warriors offense humming with a strong drive into the paint before dropping off a beauty of a behind-the-back no-look pass to a cutting Jonathan Kuminga. Poole’s 21 points, two rebounds, five assists and five three-pointers helped deliver the Warriors a 120-101 win over the Houston Rockets on December 3, 2022.

That’s one way to greet an old friend. Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant were teammates for eight seasons in Oklahoma City but that just makes their reunions even more competitive. Despite Durant’s seven-inch height advantage, Westbrook denies the Brooklyn Nets superstar’s post-up attempt with a vicious baseline block. Westbrook won the personal battle this time around and his Los Angeles Lakers won the game 116-103 thanks in part to the nine-time All-Star and 2017 MVP winner’s 14 points, six rebounds and 12 assists off the bench on November 13, 2022.

Scottie Barnes’ ability to impact a game on multiple fronts is what won him the NBA Rookie of the Year award. In Year 2, it’s clear that this is still very much the case. Competing against the Detroit Pistons, Barnes takes a pass in stride while driving into the lane, then drops off a slick one-handed bounce pass while airborne to a cutting Dalano Banton. Barnes’ eight points, five rebounds, four assists, one steal and one block made a major impact in Toronto’s 115-111 victory on November 14, 2022.

If you want to end up in the win column, don’t let Kyrie Irving and the Brooklyn Nets get hot. Looking for their fifth win in six games, the seven-time All-Star drives the ball up the floor with a head of steam, faking a pass to Joe Harris on the wing before dropping in a high-arcing floater over his defender’s fingertips. Irving’s game-high 33 points on 14 of 24 shooting — along with five rebounds, nine assists and four blocks — were too much for the Charlotte Hornets to handle as the Nets claimed a 122-116 victory on December 7, 2022.

The Golden State Warriors are happy to oblige as a vintage lights-out shooting performance from Thompson was just what they needed to snap an eight-game road losing skid to open the season. Against the Houston Rockets, the five-time All-Star grabs a pass from Steph Curry and lets it fly — one of his 10 made three-pointers in 13 attempts. A year after averaging just three points per game in less than eight minutes a night, Nick Richards has burst on to the scene for the Charlotte Hornets in the early stages of the 2022-23 season. After erupting for 19 points and 10 rebounds in the season opener, the reserve center one-ups himself against the Atlanta Hawks. Executing a flawless pick-and-roll with fellow reserve James Bouknight, Richards takes a bounce pass from his teammate and rises up for an emphatic one-handed slam. It was a perfect game for Richards, who made all nine of his field goal attempts in a 20-point, 11-rebound, two-block effort in 20 efficient minutes in Charlotte’s 126-109 win on October 23, 2022.

Almost a quarter of the way into the 2022-23 season, one thing has become clear — if Jericho Sims is on the court, he’s probably going to dunk on you. The New York Knicks’ reserve center continues to be his squad’s resident alley-oop recipient, this time against the Utah Jazz as he gets teed up for a perfectly-executed lob from Immanuel Quickley. The second-year big man was strong in 25 productive minutes, making 5-of-7 field-goal attempts for 11 points, while adding 13 rebounds, two assists and a steal in the Knicks’ 118-111 road win on November 15, 2022.

New season, same results for Andrew Wiggins and the Golden State Warriors. Fresh off a transformative title run a season ago, Wiggins and company are back to defend the crown. Against an overmatched Sacramento Kings squad, the 2022 All-Star shows last year’s postseason run was no fluke, stepping into a passing lane and picking off a lazy pass. Wiggins is off to the races from there, finishing the fast break with a slam en route 24 points, five rebounds, three steals and two blocks in Golden State’s 130-125 victory on October 23, 2022.

The 2022-23 campaign has been a renaissance for the Sacramento Kings, with De’Aaron Fox now the king of the fourth quarter. Locked in a tight game at home against the Utah Jazz, the point guard blows by Collin Sexton before unleashing a merciless poster dunk over Kelly Olynyk despite giving up eight inches in the exchange. Fox scored at least 10 points in the fourth quarter for the fourth straight contest and, for the game, contributed 24 points, three rebounds and 10 assists in Sacramento’s December 30, 2022 win. It was the Kings’ 19th win of the year, a mark they didn’t reach until Feb. 2 the prior season.

Mikal Bridges is the Phoenix Suns version of a Swiss Army Knife. The fifth-year forward shows that he can literally do it all against the New Orleans Pelicans, connecting on a straightaway three-pointer on the offensive end before intercepting a pass on the defensive end and hitting Cameron Johnson with a heads-up assist. Bridges wasn’t done either, as the 2022 NBA All-Defensive First Team selection earns a rejection on the next defensive possession as well. Bridges finished with 27 points on 10-of-13 shooting while also adding two rebounds, four assists, a steal and three blocks in Phoenix’s 124-111 victory on October 28, 2022.
