The Chicago Bulls swingman puts his slashing ability on display in the waning seconds of a quarter against the Los Angeles Lakers, first blowing past his man out at the perimeter, picking up steam on his way through the paint, then finishing around the outstretched arms of a help-side defender. DeRozan put up 38 points in the road victory on November 15, 2021.

Steph Curry is “an electric player off the dribble” who “can do it in any way.” In one of KD’s favorite plays of the season from his former teammate, the Golden State Warriors superstar guard pushes the ball up the court and lulls his defender to sleep before hitting a long crossover and blowing past him to take it straight to the cup and loft a layup over the outstretched arm of another challenger at the hoop. Steph had 27 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds in a 117-109 win over the Sacramento Kings on October 24, 2021.

The Toronto Raptors rookie flashes his do-it-all talent in this possession, taking his defender off the dribble, getting to his spot inside the paint and floating a lefty finish that finds the bottom of the net. League MVP for a reason.” Kevin Durant narrates one from his favorite plays of the season from the game-changing Denver Nuggets center as Jokić gets open for an inbound pass, catches it at the top of the perimeter, quickly squares up and fires a high-flying triple over the Portland Trail Blazers’ Jusuf Nurkić. The reigning MVP notched 28 points and flirted with a triple double in an emphatic win at home on November 14, 2021.

The pressure of your first NBA bucket can be immense — especially when you’re the first overall pick. Detroit Pistons 2021 draftee Cade Cunningham catches a pass at the arc and immediately blows by his defender and through the lane to lay one in with his left. Detroit walked away with the win in the rookie’s NBA debut on October 30, 2021.

When Anthony Edwards gets out in transition, “there’s nothing you can do to stop him.” KD narrates ones of his top plays from Edwards this season as the Minnesota Timberwolves guard drops a swift in-and-out crossover combo to get by the initial defender, then takes no prisoners at the rim with a dynamic dunk over the last line of defense. Minnesota’s budding star had a huge night in 40 minutes of action against the New Orleans Pelicans on October 25, 2021: 28 points, nine rebounds and three dimes.

The 7-footer has a knack for finishing uncanny plays - Mobley makes a strong gather off a Darius Garland dish and hangs through contact to finish his first career and-one.

In a home opener to kick off another potential MVP season, the Golden State Warriors guard pushes the ball up the court and heaves it to a teammate in the corner. Curry then chases his own pass and calls for the ball back to sink a high-flying, catch-and-shoot triple. The seven-time All-Star hit his first 10 field goals of the night on October 21, 2021, while pouring in 25 of his 45 points in the first quarter alone.

There’s a bright future for rookies with elite creativity on the court. In his NBA debut with the Houston Rockets, first-year guard Jalen Green sprints to catch a pass near the perimeter and continues toward the hoop as several defenders mark him. Meeting Minnesota Timberwolves star center Karl-Anthony Towns at the rim, Green goes up and under in midair for an acrobatic reverse layup - the first bucket of his career - on October 20, 2021.

In one of Kevin Durant’s top plays of the season from one of his favorite players, the Phoenix Suns All-Star guard takes on his Dallas Mavericks defender at the top of the key, then spins into the paint to find 7-foot-3 Kristaps Porziņģis between himself and the rim. Booker executes a flawless up-and-under as he falls to the floor and gets it to go off the glass for two of his 24 points in a 105-98 victory on November 17, 2021.

Donovan Mitchell is “one of the best scorers in the league” and his signature step-back is “elite.” In one of KD’s favorite plays of the season, Mitchell disguises a strong drive to the rim, then crosses back beyond the arc before splashing a triple over the outstretched arms of the defender. The Utah Jazz go-to guy finished with 26 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals in a November 11, 2021 matchup with the Indiana Pacers.

Picking up reigning NBA champ Giannis Antetokounmpo at halfcourt, Philadelphia 76ers sophomore forward Paul Reed tracks the two-time MVP as he makes a break for the rim. In his first regular season game with the Oklahoma City Thunder, the rook demonstrates masterful handles, simultaneously losing his defender and drawing two more before floating the rock to a teammate for a layup. In addition to his smooth maneuvers on the court, Giddey locked in 10 rebounds in his debut on October 20, 2021.

Making an impact on a playoff-hopeful squad is no easy feat for a rookie — just don’t tell that to Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga. In his NBA debut, the 7th overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, catches a behind-the-back bounce pass from teammate Juan Toscano-Anderson and steps back behind the arc to launch a confident three for his first-career bucket. In a play typically saved for All-Star weekend, Dončić freezes the defense with a behind-the-back combo straight into a cross-court pass, finding Kristaps Porzingis for a crucial three-pointer on the left wing. Dončić led the way with 26 points, 14 assists and seven rebounds during the Mavericks’ 116-106 triumph over the Houston Rockets on October 26, 2021.

The ability to make tough shots cannot be taught. Denver Nuggets rookie Bones Hyland shows no fear in going 1-on-1 with his defender and puts on a series of moves, hesitations and fakes. Despite stout defense, Hyland still converts a leaning, one-handed fadeaway going left. That’s tough. The bucket counted for two of Hyland’s seven points off the bench in his NBA debut on October 25, 2021.

The mesmerizing Denver Nuggets center defies positional norms yet again on January 7, 2022, seamlessly carrying the rock the length of the floor against the Sacramento Kings, then hitting JaMychal Green in stride with a casual no-look, one-handed entry feed. Jokić finished with 33 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists in the win. 

Pressure defense doesn't faze Jayson Tatum. The Boston Celtics star puts on a dribbling clinic in a series of maneuvers before losing his defender with a quick spin move and explosive finish at the hoop. Ball on a string. New Orleans Pelicans neophyte Herbert Jones considers a shot on the perimeter then, seeing a path to the rim with only three-time All-Star and reigning MVP Nikola Jokić in the way, decides to take his chances. The rookie center comes up big, reaching up and over his defender’s outstretched arm for a one-handed jam on December 8, 2021.

With his new squad, Gary Payton II has made a game out of putting anyone willing to jump with him on a poster. Following an outlet pass from Draymond Green, Payton II throws an emphatic slam down over Kelly Oubre Jr. — one of the many outstanding highlights from the Golden State Warriors’ November 3, 2021 W over the Charlotte Hornets. Payton II went for a then-season high of 14 points with three steals on the night.

Some rookies are just fearless from the jump. In his first regular season game with the Indiana Pacers, Chris Duarte attempts to lose his defender with a sidestep and a pump fake. With his man still on him and seconds left on the clock, Duarte pulls up for a jumper and beats the buzzer to nail a three, capping off an 11 point quarter. Golden State Warriors center Kevon Looney flies in to corral a deflected rebound and has the presence of mind to finish a difficult layup, to help the Warriors take the lead, with under 14 seconds left to play. Looney had a strong outing in Golden State’s 102-100 victory over the Indiana Pacers on December 13, 2021 with 14 points, eight rebounds, three assists and a game-winning putback.

Quentin Grimes is impressing the entire basketball world with his confidence in his rookie season. In a home matchup at the Garden against the reigning champion Milwaukee Bucks, the New York Knicks wing catches a pass from teammate Derrick Rose and quickly releases over the arms of his defender for three of his game-high 27 points on December 12, 2021.

If there’s an angle Ja Morant can’t squeeze a layup through, the world has yet to see it. The Memphis Grizzlies guard hits a lightning-quick right-to-left crossover, corkscrewing a scoop shot over the arms of both Kent Bazemore and Anthony Davis. It was one of many highlights from a 40-point, 10-assist masterpiece against the Los Angeles Lakers on October 24, 2021.

You love to see a rookie putting the league on notice. First-year Miami Heat center Omer Yurtseven catches a pass, backs his defender down toward the low post, then suddenly spins into a silky jumper with the poise of a vet. The rookie had eight points and three boards in his NBA debut – a victory over the reigning champion Milwaukee Bucks – on October 21, 2022.

On the road against the Portland Trail Blazers on October 27, 2021, Memphis Grizzlies first-year forward Santi Aldama collects a pass with no one near him. With nothing but time, Aldama makes the Portland defense pay with a high-flying triple on October 27, 2021.

It’s hard to disrupt the smooth, even-keeled approach Memphis Grizzlies guard Desmond Bane brings to the table. Bane rips through his defender on the perimeter and reverses back with a spin dribble into a driving slam with one hand. Memphis’s talented second-year guard scored 29 points and pulled down nine boards in the team’s 97-90 victory over the Dallas Mavericks on December 4, 2021.

Miami Heat guard Gabe Vincent is better known for his three-point shooting, but his “first career dunk,” as he calls it, is one for the books. The Washington Wizards defense clears the runway, allowing him a free lane to the basket for a two-handed slam. Vincent did a little bit of everything in this game, finishing with 18 points and three assists in a 112-97 win on November 18, 2021.
