Depending on one’s view, though, they may have had a difficult time seeing the 2024 No. 1 pick with DiJonai Carrington at her back, hounding her every move. DiJonai Carrington

In their search to survive one another’s haymakers during a fourth-quarter rollercoaster ride, the Phoenix Mercury and Atlanta Dream couldn’t have helped noticing the quickness with which advantages seemed to disappear. First came Phoenix’s 10-point edge with eight minutes left; then came the Dream’s subsequent, shocking seven-point lead with three minutes remaining. As Atlanta would ultimately discover, though, there was one thing moving even faster than any comeback the night would offer: Kahleah Copper with her mind set on scoring. From the sellout crowd eager to experience her WNBA debut to the schemes of the Dallas Wings’ defense, it quickly became clear just how many eyes and how much attention was committed to monitoring Angel Reese’s every move. Responding with a plan of their own, the Chicago Sky knew just what it would take to get her free. Taking in the scene of the Las Vegas Aces’ set defense, the 2023 scoring champion introduces Kate Martin to her veteran savvy, laying the bait with a back-to-basket dribble before turning the corner and powering through contact for an and-one layup over A’ja Wilson’s outstretched arms. A bucket-getter of the highest echelon, Loyd’s fourth-quarter bucket cemented her 5,000th point — just WNBA history’s 25th-ever player to reach that plateau — providing the groundwork for Seattle’s late-game push to victory. No stranger to elite-level outings against the Aces, Loyd ensured that June 7, 2024 was no different, leading the charge with 25 points, nine rebounds, two assists, and two 3-pointers as Seattle moved to 7-3.

Even as their ability to soar alongside the star-studded New York Liberty quickly became a no-brainer, it wouldn’t be long before even the competitive Chicago Sky realized that one vertical leap battle had already been lost. With a fiery competitiveness and the matching athleticism embedded into her DNA, Chennedy Carter made certain that number never became two. Thinking quickly with the Liberty working a pick-and-pop action immediately after winning a jump-ball, Carter charges toward Sabrina Ionescu, as if relishing the high-profile matchup opportunity. Attached tightly enough to Ionescu’s back to be her shadow, Carter times her leap flawlessly, winding up to whack the Liberty star’s layup away, forcing an out-of-bounds for good measure. For the Washington Mystics —  the WNBA’s leader in games within five points in the final five minutes —  the crunch-time pressures separating them from their season’s first win couldn’t have been more familiar. In pushing to the finish line by reminding herself that there was no such thing as being “tired,” Ariel Atkins ensured that the Mystics’ buckets were of the familiar type, as well. In chaining together win-after-win during a road-heavy stretch that featured just a single home game over a 17-day span, the Seattle Storm found a way to push through fatigue and provide their arena with a reason to get on their feet. With her trademark craftiness, Skylar Diggins-Smith made sure that process involved making one of the WNBA’s best rim protectors leave her feet, along the way. With her switch flipped into attack mode during a red-hot second quarter showcase, the six-time All-Star hunts down a driving lane in the pick-and-roll before outwitting Cameron Brink with a deceptive shot fake, setting her path for a reverse-pivot fadeaway jumper. A professional in the art of getting to her spots, Diggins-Smith routinely rose to the challenge against the WNBA’s No. 3-ranked shot blocker, working her three-level skillset on the way to 19 points (on 7-of-14), five rebounds, six assists, and one 3-pointer. For two-and-a-half quarters, the Indiana Fever had survived each of the Las Vegas Aces’ inevitable runs, largely through teamwork, resiliency, and being at the right place at the right time. Undeterred, even with every white jersey determined to prevent her from delivering that game-deciding run, Jackie Young drove baseline with a simple message included: even the court’s “sixth defender” wouldn’t be enough for her sixth sense. Officially on Indiana’s radar following a 17-point opening half, Young opts for a screen, setting her path for a right-sided drive. Challenged by a triple whammy of Lexie Hull’s on-ball defense, Kelsey Mitchell’s help rotation, and the closely-approaching out-of-bounds line, Young shows champion-like calmness, taking flight before hitting a cutting teammate to set up a crowd-igniting score. The play encapsulated Young’s night as she kept Las Vegas’ offense on schedule, even without one of her fellow All-Star backcourt mates. History wasn’t far behind as Young recorded her fourth-straight game eclipsing the 20-point, six-assist plateau —  the second player in WNBA history to reach that many games —  ultimately recording 22 points, six assists, two steals, and three triples in the runaway win on May 25, 2024.

With significant draft capital invested into beefing up their frontcourt firepower, the Chicago Sky have left little guesswork regarding the two areas in which they intend to dominate year-after-year: the low-post area and the paint. Having been around the block a few times —  both literally and figuratively — as a two-time All-Star and former All-Defensive Team selection, Brionna Jones used an impressive two-way sequence to show her opponents how it’s done. Powerful and unyielding against Marina Mabrey’s post entry pass attempt, Jones uses her 6-foot-3 frame to overwhelm Elizabeth Williams before inhaling the pass as if she were the intended recipient. Sprinting the length of the floor in hopes of sequencing her steal with a score, Jones reaps the reward for her ambition, using her teammate’s unselfish dime before dropping in a wide-open layup. Through her role in helping the Connecticut Sun dominate the rebounding, second-chance, and paint points battles, Jones’ team remained the WNBA’s only undefeated team.
