A three-time All-Star and All-NBA First Team selection all by the age of 23 — somehow Luka Dončić still has higher to climb to reach his ceiling. Though that prospect may be hard to believe, the Brooklyn Nets got the full experience on October 27, 2022. Dončić reminds everybody that he can score every which way, from step-back triples to impossible-to-defend dribble drives that result in easy layups and floaters. The fifth-year star also remains an elite facilitator, as he nonchalantly sets up his teammates with a plethora of highlight-reel passes: an over-the-head no-look dish to Maxi Kleber, a spin-turned-kickout to Tim Hardaway Jr. and a behind-the-back dropoff to Reggie Bullock. When the final horn sounded, the Dallas Mavericks walked off with a 129-125 overtime road victory thanks to 41 points, 11 rebounds, 14 assists and three steals from Dončić, becoming just the 10th player in NBA history to record three 40-point triple-doubles.

While the Los Angeles Lakers have endured a slow start to the 2022-23 season, the same cannot be said for Anthony Davis. Now in his fourth season in Tinseltown, the eight-time All-Star treats the Phoenix Suns to a vintage performance of total domination in which he impacts every facet of the game. The 2020 NBA champion unselfishly distributes to his teammates, mercilessly blocks shots and creates steals on the defensive end while muscling his way to an enormous quantity of rebounds. Davis scores at will too, from strong drives to the hoop to cleaning up messes under the glass. Doing it all for the Lakers on both ends with LeBron James unavailable, Davis poured in 37 points on 11-of-17 from the field and 15-for-16 from the line, chipping in an absurd 21 boards, two assists, five steals and five blocks in the November 22, 2022 divisional showdown.

Kevin Durant really can do it all. The 12-time All-Star’s scoring prowess is well-documented, but his defensive effort isn’t too shabby either — just ask Myles Turner and the Indiana Pacers. Sensing an opportunity to bail out a teammate, Durant drops into the paint from the help-side and turns aside a dunk attempt in dramatic fashion. Durant was in do-it-all mode, posting 36 points, nine rebounds and seven assists to help the Brooklyn Nets get a much-needed 116-109 victory on October 31, 2022. Durant moved into 19th place on the NBA’s all-time scoring list and also scored 25-plus points in Brooklyn’s first seven games of the season, a franchise record.

Adding Jaden Ivey to a Detroit Pistons team loaded with young talent has brought basketball excitement back to the Motor City. Despite it being his first career NBA game, the rookie point guard looked at ease in his debut against the Orlando Magic. When a steal lands in his hands, the lightning-quick Ivey is off to the races leading the counterattack, dropping an underhanded scoop pass to teammate Saddiq Bey for a transition layup less than two minutes into his NBA career. Ivey played with the poise of a veteran, tallying 19 points, three rebounds, four assists and three steals in a 113-109 Pistons victory on October 19, 2022.

Charging straight into the lane against three San Antonio Spurs defenders is not for the faint of heart — but it is for Zion Williamson. The New Orleans Pelicans All-Star forward scoops up a bounce pass on the elbow and makes his move, putting the ball on the floor and muscling his way to a layup despite spinning his way into a traffic jam underneath the basket. Williamson poured in a season-high 32 points on 14-of-18 from the field to go along with 11 rebounds and two steals in his squad’s 129-110 win on November 23, 2022.

Jaylen Brown welcomed Donovan Mitchell to the Eastern Conference the best way he knows how — by putting him on a poster. Playing in just his fifth game with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Mitchell receives a rude awakening courtesy of the Boston Celtics’ 2021 All-Star. When Brown picks off a Mitchell bounce pass, he and teammate Marcus Smart motor the other way on a 2-on-1 advantage. Brown collects a bounce pass and then takes flight, slamming an angry one-handed dunk on top of his helpless opponent. Brown put together a solid performance of 32 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals on October 28, 2022.

You’ll never forget the first bucket of your NBA career. MarJon Beauchamp earns his welcome to the league moment against the Houston Rockets, bringing the ball up the court, driving into the lane and converting a left-handed layup. The Milwaukee Bucks rookie guard and 24th overall pick of the 2022 NBA Draft needed just two minutes of game time to record his first points and walked away with a 125-105 Bucks victory on October 22, 2022.

Getting drafted to Ja Morant’s squad has all kinds of benefits. Eyeing up an opportunity to hit his superstar teammate for a bucket, David Roddy whips a one-handed cross-court pass to Morant, who finishes the possession by knocking down a three-pointer. The Memphis Grizzlies rookie picked up two rebounds and an assist in his 13 minutes of professional action, a 115-112 overtime win over the New York Knicks on October 19, 2022.

Fresh off achieving a national championship in college, Christian Braun has brought an unselfish, winning style of basketball with him to the Denver Nuggets. Against the Utah Jazz, the rookie shows he’s willing to do whatever it takes to secure a victory, fearlessly stepping in front of Malik Beasley to turn a wide-open dunk into a ferocious rejection. Braun continued to make an impact off the Nuggets bench, chipping in 10 points, six rebounds, an assist and a block in Denver’s 117-101 triumph on October 28, 2022.

Sleep on Julius Randle’s outside game if you want but you might get burned. The New York Knicks forward shows the Minnesota Timberwolves that his perimeter game has the ability to deal serious damage, first putting his defender on skates before confidently sticking a step-back three-pointer. It was far from a fluke occurrence, as Randle connected on eight of his 13 attempts from beyond the arc, burying the Timberwolves with a game-high 31 points to go with eight rebounds and three assists in New York’s 120-107 road win on November 7, 2022.

Eager to help out a Los Angeles Lakers team hungry for a victory early in the season, free agent acquisition Lonnie Walker IV knew just how to deliver. Getting out in space against the New Orleans Pelicans thanks to an outlet pass from LeBron James, Walker IV rewards the Lakers’ faith by taking flight and throwing down a vicious one-hand slam over Jose Alvarado. Walker IV deposited 28 points, grabbed three rebounds and buried five triples in his new team’s thrilling 120-117 overtime triumph on November 2, 2022.

New season, same results for Andrew Wiggins and the Golden State Warriors. Fresh off a transformative title run a season ago, Wiggins and company are back to defend the crown. Against an overmatched Sacramento Kings squad, the 2022 All-Star shows last year’s postseason run was no fluke, stepping into a passing lane and picking off a lazy pass. Wiggins is off to the races from there, finishing the fast break with a slam en route 24 points, five rebounds, three steals and two blocks in Golden State’s 130-125 victory on October 23, 2022.

In just his second game back from an injury that caused him to miss all but nine games a year ago, Michael Porter Jr. has opened the 2022-23 season looking very much like his old self. Drawing one of the game’s toughest defensive assignments in Steph Curry, Porter Jr. doesn’t flinch, staying in lockstep with the four-time champion and two-time MVP on his path to the basket, swatting Curry’s shot with authority. Porter Jr. brought it on the offensive end too, contributing 17 points and six rebounds in the Denver Nuggets’ 128-123 road win at the defending champion Golden State Warriors on October 21, 2022.

Even when you send a double team Trae Young’s way, he still finds ways to beat you. When two Detroit Pistons converge behind the arc to prevent him from bombing a triple, the two-time All-Star does the next best thing and whips a no-look pass into the post to Clint Capela, who converts the layup attempt while drawing a foul. Young’s elite ability to make any shot or pass makes him nearly impossible to defend, as his 36 points, two rebounds, 12 assists and four triples were enough to sink the Pistons 136-112 on October 28, 2022.

The Utah Jazz didn’t learn their lesson the first time they tried to trespass in Deandre Ayton’s paint, so he was more than willing to remind them again. Mike Conley gains access to the lane with a pretty crossover move but fails to account for the Phoenix Suns’ center, who viciously denies the attempt. When the deflection falls into Conley’s hands again, he decides to give it another shot and is promptly denied. The Suns lost a heartbreaker, but Ayton pulled his weight with 17 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists and three blocks on November 18, 2022.

Brook Lopez has no time for Houston Rockets guard Jalen Green’s drive to the hoop, literally ripping the ball out of Green’s hands in his attempt to score and needing only one arm to do so. It was a block party for the Milwaukee Bucks’ 15-year veteran, who swatted five shots in the October 22, 2022 contest. The seven-footer did a little bit of everything for the Bucks — in addition to the five blocks, Lopez scored nine points, grabbed five rebounds, dished out two assists, grabbed two steals and sank a trio of three-pointers in Milwaukee’s runaway 125-105 victory.

Seeking a momentum shift after a sluggish start to the season, the Sacramento Kings called upon offseason addition Kevin Huerter to reverse their fortunes. Happy to oblige, Huerter grabs a defensive rebound and quickly takes matters into his own hands. Catching the flat-footed Miami Heat defense napping, the fifth-year shooting guard showcases his quick-shot ability from long range, pulling up from way downtown to bury one of his seven three-pointers of the ballgame. Huerter’s sizzling night from the field — 8-for-11 and 7-for-8 from deep — led to a team-high 27 points, along with three rebounds and seven assists in Sacramento’s 119-113 victory on October 29, 2022.

Just in case anybody forgot, there isn’t a shot on the court that Fred VanVleet can’t make. After missing the Toronto Raptors’ previous three games with an injury, the 2022 first-time All-Star issues a harsh reminder to the Chicago Bulls at how deadly his stroke is when he’s feeling it. The seventh-year point guard shakes off suffocating defensive pressure from Chicago’s Ayo Dosunmu, as VanVleet dribbles behind his back before absorbing contact and somehow getting an off-balance jumper to fall. VanVleet was at his very best, producing season-highs of 30 points and 11 assists to go with five rebounds and three-pointers apiece in Toronto’s 113-104 victory on November 6, 2022.

If you didn’t know Dalano Banton’s name before, you sure do now. With his shorthanded Toronto Raptors missing three key players against the Detroit Pistons, Banton took the opportunity to introduce himself. The second-year guard was a star on both ends, first creating a steal when he picks rookie Jaden Ivey’s pocket and then capping off the possessions with an emphatic slam on the other end. Banton exploded for a career-high 27 points while also chipping in four rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocks in Toronto’s gritty 115-111 triumph on November 14, 2022.

In the first start of his NBA career, Santi Aldama instantly rewards the Memphis Grizzlies’ faith in his ability to fill in for the injured Jaren Jackson Jr. After showing isolated flashes as a rookie, the 21-year-old from Spain has clearly elevated his game in Year 2, putting himself in the perfect spot when a triple team envelops teammate Steven Adams. Aldama makes the New York Knicks pay for leaving him open, finishing the play with a one-handed slam, two of his 18 points to go with a career-high 11 rebounds in Memphis’ 115-112 overtime win on October 19, 2022.

D’Angelo Russell has ice in his veins and an even colder handle. Down by two against the Utah Jazz with the fourth quarter clock ticking, the Minnesota Timberwolves guard takes matters into his own hands, putting the ball on the floor with his left hand before sending Mike Conley Jr. to the floor with a stop-and-pop, behind-the-back dribble. From there, all that’s left to do is force overtime, which Russell accomplishes with an open 14-footer with 4.4 seconds remaining. Russell racked up 23 points, five rebounds, seven assists and two steals in the October 21, 2022 overtime battle.

Trailing by two points with slightly more than a minute remaining in regulation, there’s little doubt what’s on Caris LeVert’s mind — winning. After snaring an offensive board off a missed triple, LeVert opts against a layup attempt to tie the game against the Boston Celtics, instead sprinting toward the corner before his defender has a moment to recover. The seventh-year pro rises up for a step-back three-pointer to give his squad a one-point lead. LeVert had one of the best games of his career to help the Cleveland Cavaliers erase a 15-point deficit, exploding for 41 points along with four rebounds, seven assists, three steals and six three-pointers in the 132-123 overtime win on October 28, 2022.

Sometimes it pays to shoot first and ask questions later . Following a steal on the defensive end, the Brooklyn Nets push the counterattack against the Portland Trail Blazers. When Yuta Watanabe gets the ball in his hands, he hesitates for a moment before deciding to pull up from deep himself. The fifth-year forward and first-year Net connected on 5-of-7 field goals off the bench — all from behind the arc — for 20 points, seven rebounds and two assists in the November 17, 2022 victory.

No inbound is a given when Jose Alvarado is on the prowl. The New Orleans Pelicans reserve guard is a bundle of energy whenever he’s on the court, not to mention waiting for the offense to make a mistake that he can capitalize on. Following a made free throw by Zion Williamson, the Houston Rockets throw the ball in while expecting to begin the next possession. But Alvarado has other ideas, picking Kevin Porter Jr.’s pocket, ending up with a steal and layup in the blink of an eye. Alvarado gave a huge lift to the second unit, converting 5-of-6 field-goal attempts for 12 points, two rebounds, five assists and three steals in 20 minutes amidst a 119-106 victory on November 12, 2022.

No Giannis Antetokounmpo, Jrue Holiday or Khris Middleton for the Milwaukee Bucks? No problem for Jevon Carter.. The fifth-year guard known for his defensive prowess shows he can score the ball just as well against the Oklahoma City Thunder, pump faking a defender before putting the ball on the floor and going up strong against another challenger at the rim for a hard-earned layup. Carter doubled his previous season-high point total, erupting for a career-high 36 to go along with four rebounds, a career-best 12 assists and five three-pointers in Milwaukee’s marathon 136-132 double-overtime win on November 9, 2022.

After playing 35 bruising minutes against the Los Angeles Lakers, Jerami Grant decided that he wasn’t interested in five more. Locked in a tie game on the road in the closing seconds of the fourth quarter, Grant shows no fear when confronted by LeBron James, aggressively driving straight at the Lakers’ star before getting the go-ahead bucket to fall with three seconds left. Grant’s clutch shot — as well as his 16 points, two rebounds and an assist — earned the Portland Trail Blazers their third straight win to open the season, a thrilling 106-104 victory on October 23, 2022.

It’s difficult to lose a basketball game when a guy on your team can’t miss. When his superstar teammate fails to convert a wide-open layup, Josh Green is there to provide a spark off the Dallas Mavericks’ bench. Following a rare point-blank miss from Luka Dončić, the Mavericks maintain possession thanks to a fortuitous deflection off the offensive glass. Aiming to take advantage of the second chance, Green breaks toward the basket and gets a perfect feed in stride from Maxi Kleber before throwing down a vicious two-handed slam. The third-year guard scored 16 points — on 5-for-5 from the field, 2-for-2 from behind the arc and 4-for-4 at the stripe — to pair with five rebounds and two assists in his squad’s 96-94 win over the Brooklyn Nets on November 7, 2022.

The Miami Heat were playing without their top three scorers — but they still had Kyle Lowry on their side. With only seven healthy players against the Washington Wizards, the Heat needed their veteran point guard to empty the tank and he was happy to oblige. The six-time All-Star drives with determination into the lane, sidesteps a couple of defenders then rises up on the baseline to drain a 19-footer over the much taller Kristaps Porziņģis. Though they’d ultimately come up short, Lowry’s 24 points, 10 rebounds, 15 assists, two blocks and a steal kept the Heat in the fight on November 18, 2022.

The 2022-23 Minnesota Timberwolves were designed to win by the strength of their star-laden starting lineup — which makes the continued progression of Jaylen Nowell a most welcome surprise. Playing with raised confidence against the San Antonio Spurs, Nowell takes a pass at the top of the key and immediately turns on the jets toward the basket before taking flight and throwing down a backboard-shaking slam. The fourth-year reserve guard made a tremendous impact, tallying 23 points, four rebounds and two assists in 22 minutes off the bench in Minnesota’s 134-122 victory on October 26, 2022.

When Trendon Watford ran into traffic in the paint, there was no panic — just a heads-up pass and a win to celebrate. Making his Top Shot debut, the Portland Trail Blazers’ second-year forward makes the smart play when confronted by two Washington Wizards defenders, hitting a cutting Josh Hart with a no-look pass through the back door for a layup that increases his squad’s lead to 11 with under a minute to play. Watford made a significant impact off the bench, posting 21 points on 9 of 12 shooting along with three rebounds and five assists in Portland’s 124-116 victory on February 3, 2023.

Even in Year 15, Goran Dragić still has the magic to provide an instant offensive jolt. Now a spark plug off the bench for the Chicago Bulls, Dragić shows off his basketball IQ by catching the Charlotte Hornets’ defense napping. While preparing an inbound pass on the baseline, an observant Dragić notices Dennis Smith Jr. looking the other way, bounces the ball off his back and lays it off the glass for an easy deuce. The heads up play yielded two of Dragić’s 16 points — along with three rebounds, three assists and a block — in just 15 minutes as the Bulls prevailed 106-88 on November 2, 2022.

Eager to make an early-season impact on a slow-starting Orlando Magic squad, fifth-year center Mo Bamba takes matters into his own hands against the visiting Charlotte Hornets, using every inch of his 7-foot frame to throw down a monstrous dunk over Jalen McDaniels. It was an incredibly-efficient 17 minutes off the bench for Bamba, who made eight of his 12 shots for 19 points, along with six rebounds, an assist and three blocks in Orlando’s first win of the season on October 28, 2022.

Talk about teamwork and athleticism in their finest forms. With the Washington Wizards missing their top two scorers in a home game against the Dallas Mavericks, Rui Hachimura was more than willing to step up in an all-hands-on-deck scenario. Teammate Kyle Kuzma gets the play started, gaining access to the paint with a dribble drive and spin move before he’s enveloped by three defenders. Ever the cool customer, Kuzma dumps off an opportune pass to Hachimura, who goes up, under and up again in order to get a reverse layup to fall. Hachimura produced a season-high 23 points along with eight rebounds off the bench for the shorthanded Wizards in the November 10, 2022 victory.

Acquiring Kelly Olynyk right before the 2022-23 season began is already paying major dividends for the Utah Jazz. Trailing by one late in overtime in the team’s third game of the new campaign, Olynyk grabs the inbound pass and makes his move, dribbling with determination into the lane before unfurling a game-winning driving scoop shot with three seconds remaining to sink the New Orleans Pelicans. Olynyk’s 20-point, three-rebound, five-assist effort was instrumental in the thrilling 122-121 win on October 23, 2022, not to mention keeping the Jazz a perfect 3-0 to start the season.

With his struggling Philadelphia 76ers off to a slow start to their season, the reserve forward does what he does best to aid his team’s quest for victory — bomb it from deep. The scorching Niang lit up the visiting Phoenix Suns for seven three-pointers in 10 tries, including this open spot up triple from the left wing that brought the home crowd to its feet. Niang’s 21 points in 27 minutes — along with four rebounds, an assist and two steals were vital in delivering the 76ers a much-needed 100-88 victory on November 7, 2022.

What’s better than a hard-fought overtime win on the road? Doing it against the team that just traded you. After two full seasons with the Minnesota Timberwolves, Jarred Vanderbilt didn’t have to wait long to exact his revenge — now a member of the Utah Jazz, Vanderbilt and his new squad were in Minnesota for the second game of the 2022-23 season. With Mike Conley Jr. pushing the tempo in transition, Vanderbilt bides his time, drifting all alone into the paint in the perfect spot to throw down an open slam off an unselfish dish from his veteran point guard. The final two points of the game were an exclamation point for Vanderbilt, who posted four points, 14 rebounds, four assists and four steals in the thrilling 132-126 win on October 21, 2022.

With the defending champions in town, Dennis Smith Jr. made sure to bring his best. After a defensive gem on Steph Curry at the end of regulation forced overtime, the Charlotte Hornets point guard decided to play the role of hero on offense in the extra session. With his team holding a tight three-point lead, Smith Jr. collects a foul line jump ball and gets right to work, driving strong to the hole and flipping a high-arcing layup over the outstretched fingertips of Andrew Wiggins. The Hornets never looked back from there, and Smith Jr.’s 13 points, nine rebounds and eight assists were instrumental in the 120-113 win over the Golden State Warriors on October 29, 2022.

Collins’ refusal to give up on the play — as well as his 19 points, 11 rebounds, four blocks and a steal — led the Hawks to a hard-fought 118-113 road victory on October 26, 2022.

Although it had been almost a month since he had scored double-digit points, Cam Thomas rose to the occasion for the Brooklyn Nets when the team was shorthanded on the road against the Indiana Pacers. With the second quarter clock nearly at zero, Thomas drives head-on at T.J. McConnell before pulling up to drain a running floater from 18 feet to beat the halftime buzzer. It was one of 13 made shots for the second-year guard, who erupted for 33 points and three rebounds in 29 minutes off the bench to lift the Nets to a 136-133 win on December 12, 2022.
