Methodical and steady with the ball in his hands, Jrue Holiday brings an all-new presence to a Boston Celtics team ready to take the next step. After drawing a mismatch out of a high screen, Holiday drives against big man Mitchell Robinson, then stops on a dime for a steadying pull-up jumper. Holiday scored nine points in his first game with the new squad, adding four rebounds and three blocks for good measure in the October 25, 2023 affair.

The Dallas Mavericks knew exactly what they were getting when they acquired Grant Williams over the course of the offseason and they saw it present itself in his first game with the new squad. Always willing to battle on the glass, Williams follows a teammate’s miss off the rim, deflects the ball out to the perimeter to regain possession then creeps into an opening in the paint and caps off the play with a layup. Williams racked up 17 points and six rebounds in his Mavs debut.

As perfect a candidate to join the gritty Memphis Grizzlies as anyone, Marcus Smart fits right in with his new squad. Working a pick-and-roll with teammate Xavier Tillman, Smart draws a mismatched defender, immediately seeks contact and still manages to bury a difficult floater. Smart racked up 17 points and three steals in his October 25, 2023 debut.

An always-on threat to run the floor and wreak havoc above the rim, John Collins is a valuable addition to the Utah Jazz. Identifying an opportunity after teammate Kelly Olynyk battles for a rebound under the hoop, Collins takes off in transition, beats the other team down the floor and throws down a fastbreak slam. Collins finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds in his October 25, 2023 debut.

An impossible-to-miss presence whenever he gets the ball in his hands, Dennis Schröder brings new energy to the Toronto Raptors’ offense. After slipping past his own defender with a spin move at halfcourt, Schröder ducks into the paint, fires out a kickout pass, then sneaks into position under the hoop for an easy two. Schröder racked up 22 points and seven assists in his first game with his new squad, an October 25, 2023 victory.

A versatile addition that gives the New York Knicks critical backcourt depth (and a fourth Villanova Wildcat), Donte DiVincenzo showed up at Madison Square Garden ready to work. Surveying a halfcourt zone after advancing the ball up the floor, DiVincenzo penetrates into the paint as four defenders collapse, then promptly fires a kickout pass out to the three-point line for a Josh Hart three. DiVincenzo added three rebounds and two assists in the October 25, 2023 opener.

If there’s a passing lane, Derrick Rose will find it. If there isn’t, he’ll make one. After surveying the floor in his first game as a member of the Memphis Grizzlies, Rose penetrates into the paint, draws multiple defenders, then leaps to send a skip pass out to the corner for a ready-and-waiting David Roddy. Returning to the place he played college basketball, Rose donned the No. 23 he sported during his lone season with the Memphis Tigers back in 2007-08. The three-time All-Star tallied eight points and three assists in the October 25, 2023 matchup.

Derrick Rose

While most of the time he’d use his hangtime for a towering slam or acrobatic finish, there’s layers to Lonnie Walker IV’s game. In his first appearance as a member of the Brooklyn Nets, Walker IV penetrates through the paint, leaps past multiple defenders and fires a kick out pass to the corner. Walker IV finished the October 27, 2023 matchup with 14 points.
