When the guy with the ball can do it all on a basketball court, it’s hard to predict what’s coming. Versatile Phoenix Suns forward Boris Diaw seizes an opportunity to attack a gap in the Dallas Mavericks defense then rises up to throw down a two-handed slam through the help-side defense on May 30, 2006. Diaw finished the playoff matchup with 20 points and nine rebounds.

Special rookies make special plays, full stop. With seconds remaining in a tied matchup against the LA Clippers, Utah Jazz guard Deron Williams splits a pair of defenders out on the perimeter before rising up and nailing a game-winning runner on March 3, 2006.

Nothing brings out more in a competitor than a hard-fought playoff slugfest. In the midst of a dominant personal outing, Sacramento Kings forward Bonzi Wells blows past one San Antonio Spurs defender and smashes home a dunk over the late-rotating help-side. Wells finished the series-tying matchup on April 30, 2006 with 25 points and 17 rebounds.

Lose sight of a slashing threat like Jerry Stackhouse and he’ll immediately turn it against you. After running off a high screen from teammate Dirk Nowitzki, the veteran wing notices a gap in the defense and takes the ball straight to the rack for a hammer against the Indiana Pacers help side. Stackhouse finished with 15 points in the December 26, 2005 win.

Regardless of how the opposing teams line up against him, New Orleans Hornets rookie Chris Paul navigates the defense with the grace of slalom skier. The first-year guard attacks Miami Heat forward Udonis Haslem with a punishing in-and-out crossover before ducking up-and-under the rim for a contested two on November 15, 2005.

Postseason or otherwise, don’t expect Jared Jeffries to give up on a play. Cleveland Cavaliers guard Larry Hughes gets a jump on the field, racing down the court for a fastbreak, but is met at the rim by a streaking Jeffries coming in hot for the chase-down rejection. Jeffries finished with 15 points for the Washington Wizards in an April 22, 2006 playoff matchup.

When the world sees a modest gap in the defense, Dwyane Wade sees a runway. When a lane presents itself against the Detroit Pistons in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals, the prolific Miami Heat shooting guard beelines straight into the paint and unleashes a powerful one-handed slam. Wade finished the May 27, 2006 win with 35 points and stamped his ticket to his first NBA Finals.

After catching a pass in the corner against the Boston Celtics, Indiana Pacers rookie Danny Granger lunges past his defender into the paint then steps through to the other side for two. Granger put up 14 points in the March 19, 2006 affair.

Creative playmakers are highlight reel catalysts. After tracking down an outlet pass with a defender in check on January 20, 2006, Atlanta Hawks forward Al Harrington reaches out in front of himself and lobs a two-handed alley-oop pass back to a trailing Josh Smith.

Throw the lob anywhere near the cylinder and let Shawn Marion do the rest. While quarterbacking a half-court set, Phoenix Suns playmaker Boris Diaw tosses up an alley-oop over the Denver Nuggets defense knowing that Marion has ample elevation to reach through traffic and convert it. Marion finished with 21 points and 14 rebounds in the March 25, 2005 win over the Denver Nuggets.

A little vigilance on D goes a long way toward creating opportunities on offense. Los Angeles Lakers guard Smush Parker reaches in to break up a Utah Jazz pass attempt on one end of the court then takes the rock the length of the floor himself to cap off the break with a 180-degree reverse on February 13, 2006.

If there’s an opportunity to throw it down all over a defender, New Jersey Nets wing Richard Jefferson will be the first to take it. After racing down the court in a playoff tilt against the Indiana Pacers, the high-flying forward collects a pass from teammate Jason Kidd, ducks under the hoop to avoid traffic then punches home a reverse slam on Jermaine O’Neal. Jefferson finished with 21 points in the April 25, 2006 contest.

Left to show what he’s capable of in isolation, Kevin Garnett makes it easy for the world to appreciate his unprecedented skill set. With seconds remaining in a battle against the LA Clippers, the Minnesota Timberwolves legend gauges his defender at the top of the key before attacking into the paint and pivoting back into a fadeaway jumper. Garnett’s late bucket – two of his 25 points on the night - would force overtime in the November 5, 2005 affair.

With imposing length and the skillset to consistently make the most of it, Andrei Kirilenko can cover a lot of ground quickly. The versatile Utah Jazz forward draws his defender out to the perimeter and blows past him into the paint, then immobilizes the Dallas Mavericks help-side and plants one on the rim on March 11, 2006.

Sometimes the quickest way from Point A to Point B is in a straight line. Portland Trail Blazers rookie Jarrett Jack runs his defender hard off a screen at the top of the key, mixes up the help-side with a ball fake, then lays it in for two against the Seattle SuperSonics on April 2, 2006.

While having an unmistakable 7-foot lob target doesn’t hurt, it takes a soft touch around the basket to convert on a sideline alley-oop. With 0.7 seconds left on the game clock against the San Antonio Spurs, Milwaukee Bucks forward Toni Kukoc looks through the chaos to find rookie big man Andrew Bogut in position to catch and redirect a high-arcing pass through the net as the buzzer sounds. Bogut finished the extra frame with 19 points and nine rebounds on December 20, 2005.

The ground surface that Gerald Wallace can cover while hounding a ball carrier is outright impressive. The Charlotte Bobcats forward puts pressure on Chris Paul at the top of the key, makes an aggressive push for a steal, then recovers in time to swat an ensuing layup attempt directly out of bounds with the trajectory of a laser. Wallace finished the January 16, 2006 contest with 19 points, seven rebounds, six blocks and two steals.

Give Jermaine O’Neal space to work out of the high post and don’t be surprised to see him take it straight to your doorstep. The Indiana Pacers big man faces up at the elbow, explodes past his New Jersey Nets defender down to the low block, then throws down a poster in a May 4, 2006 playoff game.

Regardless of the opposing forces around him, Elton Brand is an unstoppable force on the glass. After battling for a board in a May 8, 2006 playoff contest against the Phoenix Suns, the LA Clippers power forward fades back into a jump shot for two of the 40 points he reached in total.

When Jason Richardson breaks away from the pack, it’s best to just sit back and enjoy. The high-flying Golden State Warriors dunk contest star intercepts a pass at one end of the floor then takes the ball the length of the court and unleashes a perfectly clean windmill slam. Richardson finished with 27 points and nine rebounds in the April 14, 2006 win over the Phoenix Suns.

It’ll take more than a bloody nose to knock Carmelo Anthony off his A-game. After securing a pass through an aggressive Phoenix Suns steal attempt at the end of a tied, triple-overtime ball game, the Denver Nuggets forward spins into position for a game-winning mid-range jumper. Despite taking an incidental knee to the face in the third extra frame and wearing the requisite medical accoutrements into the last possession, Anthony finished the January 10, 2006 contest with 43 points.

Give Ben Wallace an opportunity to let loose on the rim and he’ll let the world know. After setting a screen for teammate Richard Hamilton, Wallace rolls to the rim and unleashes an emphatic alley-oop slam against the Milwaukee Bucks. Wallace and his squad would cruise to a win in the April 26, 2006 playoff contest.

Appreciate hoopers that make their impact felt on both ends of the floor. After forcing a turnover against the LA Clippers on defense, New York Knicks rookie Nate Robinson collects the rock, sprints straight down the court, then spins his way into an acrobatic layup on February 7, 2006.

Robert Horry has made a living making difficult tasks look ever so easy. With his teammate double-teamed in the low block, the San Antonio Spurs forward sneaks into the paint to bail him out and immediately relays the rock behind his back to a wide-open Nazr Mohammed for two on December 21, 2005.

NBA scorers have a sixth sense when it comes to putting the ball in the basket. After pushing the pace up the floor against the Utah Jazz, Toronto Raptors swingman Morris Peterson splits a crowded defense, draws contact and still manages to bank in a wild, off-balance layup on January 17, 2006.

Confident shooters with quick releases never back down from big moments. Tied with 4.6 seconds left in overtime, Chicago Bulls combo guard Ben Gordon works his defender off the dribble before pulling up for a long two at the buzzer. Gordon finished with 32 points in the January 18, 2006 win over the New York Knicks.

If the lob is anywhere in the building, the lob’s within reach of a soaring Dwight Howard. The Orlando Magic big man runs the break with his teammates, works a give-and-go with point guard Jameer Nelson, then reaches way back to cradle and throw down a thundering alley-oop on March 17, 2006. Howard finished with 17 points, 13 rebounds and six blocks against the Boston Celtics.

Next-level athletes can elevate on a dime. After rolling out of a screen for Memphis Grizzlies teammate Bobby Jackson, rookie forward Hakim Warrick steps right through an Orlando Magic defender and rises up to sneak a quick throwdown past the defense on December 2, 2005.

Every legend has its first triumph. Down two points with a single second on the game clock in a pivotal playoff matchup, Portland Trail Blazers guard Damian Lillard curls hard around a screen to catch an inbound pass deep on the perimeter, pulls up and buries a high-arcing, side-gliding triple. The game-winning three on May 2, 2014 sealed the first-round series in six games, avoiding a dreaded do-or-die battle on Houston Rockets soil.

Putting the ball through the net unchallenged is one thing — getting into position to get a shot off when the defense won’t give up an inch is another. Down by three at the end of a second-overtime period versus the Boston Celtics, Philadelphia 76ers forward Kyle Korver works to clear space between himself and his defender before finally pulling up for a contested three. Korver finished with 12 points in the January 13, 2006 matchup and his squad held on for the win in triple overtime.

When the game is on the line, put the ball in the hands of a generational playmaker. Tied on the final possession of an overtime matchup against the Charlotte Bobcats, LeBron James studies his defender at the top of the key before pulling up and draining the first game-winner of his NBA career. In addition to the milestone jumper, the Cleveland Cavaliers star racked up 37 points, 11 rebounds and 12 assists in the March 22, 2006 matchup.

A little congestion in the paint never deterred Stromile Swift. The high-flying Houston Rockets power dunker cuts into the post to collect a pass from teammate Rafer Alston then unleashes a monstrous one-handed hammer over the San Antonio Spurs on March 18, 2006.

While it’s the brute strength that puts him in position to score, it’s the soft touch around the rim that sets Zach Randolph apart as a low-post threat. The Memphis Grizzlies forward goes to work in the block, bullying his way through a Dallas Mavericks defender and capping off the possession with a reverse layup on the other side of the hoop. Randolph racked up 27 points and 14 rebounds in the April 16, 2014 win.

At no point in time has checking Golden State Warriors guard Baron Davis come easy. Operating in transition against the Houston Rockets, the creative playmaker splits a pair of defenders with a behind-the-back move, then ducks under their outstretched arms to bank home a reverse layup. Davis finished with 27 points and 13 assists in the December 14, 2005 matchup.

If there’s a way to put the ball in the bucket, expect Manu Ginobili to find it. The evasive San Antonio Spurs guard attacks a gap in the Los Angeles Lakers defense, gathers the ball under the hoop then converts on a 180-degree layup through contact on March 10, 2006.

After pushing the ball up the floor at the tail end of the third quarter on March 26, 2006, the Boston Celtics star lets a deep three fly from the logo. Pierce finished with 24 points, eight rebounds and eight dimes in the matchup against the Chicago Bulls.

Flanked by teammates in transition against the Phoenix Suns, Seattle SuperSonics point guard Luke Ridnour heads straight into the paint and converts on a tough two through contact.
