Luka Dončić only played three quarters, so he made sure to announce his presence loud and with authority. The Portland Trail Blazers have no defensive solutions for the Dallas Mavericks superstar, who pump fakes a defender out of his sneakers and fools another with a head fake while driving strong to the rim before elevating for a massive one-handed slam. Despite sitting out the entire fourth quarter, Dončić dropped 33 points, six rebounds, nine assists and five triples in his squad’s 130-110 victory on December 16, 2022.

When Bam Adebayo is charging toward the basket with a full head of steam, enter the paint at your own risk. Joe Harris gives it his best shot on defense, but there was no slowing down the Miami Heat center as he gets in front of his initial defender and rumbles down the lane before soaring through the air and finishing with an earth-shaking dunk. The Brooklyn Nets won a nail-biter, but Adebayo’s throwdown won’t be forgotten anytime soon as the 2020 NBA All-Star finished with 10 points, eight rebounds and two assists on January 8, 2023.

If you leave Kevin Huerter this wide open in the closing seconds of a tight game then plan on leaving with a loss. The third time's the charm for Huerter and the Sacramento Kings, who stay with the play by collecting two offensive boards after a pair of De’Aaron Fox midrange misfires. When the ball makes its way back out to the perimeter, Keegan Murray swings it to an all-alone Huerter who drains the backbreaking triple with 9.2 seconds remaining. The game-winner was the cap on a huge night for Huerter, who finished with a team-high 30 points on 12 of 18 shooting to pair with two rebounds, two assists and six three-pointers in the thrilling 126-125 win on December 30, 2022.

It doesn’t get much better than a game-winning buzzer beater in your first NBA season, but such is reality for Indiana Pacers rookie Andrew Nembhard. Nembhard gets the opportunity thanks to a Tyrese Haliburton offensive board in the closing seconds, and when Haliburton can’t find his own shot after some dribble maneuvers, he spots Nembhard on the wing. The moment wasn’t too big for the 31st overall pick, as he did not shy away from unleashing a dagger over the outstretched fingertips of LeBron James. Nembhard connected on 4 of his 7 three-point attempts for 12 points, four rebounds and two blocks, helping his team rally from a 17-point fourth quarter deficit in the 116-115 win over the Los Angeles Lakers on November 28, 2022.

Anything you can do, Saddiq Bey can do better. On the road facing the Golden State Warriors, Bey’s Detroit Pistons found themselves tied with 2.3 seconds remaining following a clutch Klay Thompson three-pointer. On the ensuing possession, Killian Hayes inbounds to Bey and the third-year forward doesn’t miss, letting fly a game-winning triple at the buzzer while falling backward. It was one of four treys for Bey, who on a floor filled with precision marksmen hit the biggest shot of the night, getting the last laugh by posting 17 points, three rebounds and two steals in the 122-119 win on January 4, 2023.

Squaring off against the San Antonio Spurs in the first game of the season, the 40th overall pick thwarts a Spurs drive to the basket with a block and change of possession for his new squad. The first four minutes of McGowens’ NBA career were a successful first impression, as his first career block made an impact as the Charlotte Hornets won all four quarters in the runaway 129-102 victory on October 19, 2022.

Jabari Walker was so pumped to hit the floor in his NBA debut that he decided to race the entire length of it. Once the 57th overall selection snares a defensive rebound he is off and running, traversing the court and hitting the Denver Nuggets defense with a behind-the-back move to gain entry to the lane before finishing with a runner in the paint. Walker had a busy first four professional minutes, making his only shot for two points while adding two rebounds and an assist in the 135-110 Portland Trail Blazers triumph on October 24, 2022.

Beware of lazy passes when De’Andre Hunter is in the vicinity. Following a Trae Young alley-oop to John Collins, the LA Clippers fail to account for Hunter on the ensuing inbounds pass and the fourth-year Atlanta Hawks forward makes them pay. Hunter steps in front of the ball for the steal before taking flight and throwing down a thunderous slam, giving the Hawks two dunks in three seconds to finish the first half. Hunter’s 20 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals were instrumental in Atlanta’s 112-108 road victory on January 8, 2023.

To win on the road, it’s important to set the tempo early. Wendell Carter Jr. and the Orlando Magic show the Portland Trail Blazers right off the bat that they mean business, as the fifth-year center rises up to deny a Jusuf Nurkić driving layup with an emphatic rejection. The Magic jumped out to a 13-point lead after one and held on as the Blazers rallied, with Carter Jr.’s 20 points, 10 rebounds and three assists a major catalyst in Orlando’s exciting 109-106 victory on January 10, 2023.

If Kyle Kuzma’s New Year’s resolution was to record a triple-double in 2023 then he didn’t have to wait very long to check it off his list. Kuzma fights through traffic against the Milwaukee Bucks, spinning his way into a double team in the paint before hitting a cutting Daniel Gafford with a pass that Gafford finishes a thunderous one-handed slam. Kuzma tallied 10 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists for his second career triple-double in helping the Washington Wizards pick up a 118-95 road win on January 1, 2023.

Pascal Siakam and the Toronto Raptors were in need of a win, and the Portland Trail Blazers were left footing the bill. Siakam takes the ball from Fred VanVleet on the elbow and goes to work, posting up Josh Hart with some fancy footwork featuring a between-the-legs dribble and smooth spin move combo before finishing with a layup. After dropping three straight, Siakam helped his team get its first win of 2023 by posting a team-high 27 points along with four rebounds, six assists and two steals in the 117-105 triumph on January 8, 2023.

Sometimes the key to rebounding is just wanting it more than the other guy. Thomas Bryant proves to be adept at turning garbage into gold for the Los Angeles Lakers when a Dennis Schröder triple is off the mark, grabbing the offensive board through sheer force of will and depositing the put-back for a critical two points. Bryant was brilliant against the Sacramento Kings, tallying 29 points on 12 of 14 shooting to go with 14 rebounds in the Lakers’ nail-biting 136-134 victory on January 7, 2023.

The Boston Celtics remember what happened the last time the Golden State Warriors came to town. And even with no championship trophy on the line this time, Al Horford was determined for a different outcome. Now in his 16th season, Horford more resembles a rookie with fresh legs as he gives chase and snuffs out Jordan Poole’s fast break opportunity with a perfectly-timed block. Horford’s 20 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks helped the Celtics get some payback for the 2021-22 NBA Finals in a thrilling 121-118 overtime win on January 19, 2023.

As one of the more talented sixth men in the NBA, it doesn’t take Christian Wood very long to start cooking. The Dallas Mavericks’ prized bench weapon goes to work on the Portland Trail Blazers defense in the second quarter, driving to the basket from the corner before unleashing a between-the-legs dribble and step-back jumper while drawing a foul. Wood scored 20 of his 32 points in a 72-point first half, adding 12 rebounds and two blocks in his squad’s 130-110 triumph on December 16, 2022.

Cameron Johnson couldn’t have returned at a better time for the Phoenix Suns. With his squad having dropped seven of eight to begin 2023, Johnson steps on the court for the first time after missing 37 games and makes an immediate impact when he scoops up a Brooklyn Nets turnover and flicks an assist in the same motion up the floor to Saben Lee for a fast-break dunk. The fourth-year forward tallied 19 points, six rebounds, two assists and two blocks in 22 productive minutes off the bench in Phoenix’s 117-112 victory on January 19, 2023.

Aaron Nesmith barely missed. Neither did his teammates, which spelled trouble for the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Indiana Pacers are happy Nesmith is theirs after two seasons with the Boston Celtics, as the third-year forward begins in the corner before driving with purpose along the baseline and finishes with a powerful right-handed slam over a helpless defender. Nesmith scored 22 points on 7 of 10 from the field, contributing nicely to his squad’s .565 shooting night as Indiana claimed a 135-126 triumph on December 29, 2022.

Down 14 points at halftime on the road, the Detroit Pistons needed a boost in order to close out 2022 with a victory. Bojan Bogdanović had them covered. The veteran forward keyed his team’s comeback against the Minnesota Timberwolves with a spectacular third quarter, showcasing his athleticism as he saves a potential turnover from rolling out of bounds while having the court awareness to feed a trailing Isaiah Stewart for a dunk. Bogdanović scored 17 of his team-high 28 points in the period and finished 10 for 14 from the field along with six rebounds and five assists in the 116-104 win on December 31, 2022.

The Washington Wizards thought they had a driving layup attempt in the bag — only Aaron Gordon had other ideas. Deni Avdija looks like he has a clear path to the rim against the Denver Nuggets, that is until Gordon springs from behind to deny the attempt with a clean block off the glass. The Denver forward played with swagger on both ends of the court, producing 22 points, seven rebounds and three assists in his squad’s 141-128 victory on December 14, 2022.

To beat the defending champs in their house you better be prepared to bring it on both ends. No problem for Markelle Fultz, who steps in front of an Andre Iguodala pass to claim the steal before dodging a closing Draymond Green with a slick behind-the-back maneuver to set up a 2-on-1 fast break. The former number one overall pick finishes by drawing his defender in and then drops off an assist to a trailing Paolo Banchero. Fultz filled up the box score for the Orlando Magic, tallying 16 points, five rebounds, seven assists and six steals in the 115-101 win over the Golden State Warriors on January 7, 2023.

Following a historic first quarter, there was no stopping LaMelo Ball and the Charlotte Hornets. Ball and his teammates were in perfect synergy all night, as he gathers a dump-off from Mason Plumlee before whipping a fabulous no-look pass back to the cutting center that ends in an easy deuce. The Hornets matched an NBA record with a staggering 51 first-quarter points, and Ball’s 24 points, three rebounds, 12 assists, two steals and seven three-pointers kept the Milwaukee Bucks chasing all night in Charlotte’s runaway 138-109 victory on January 6, 2023.

Most players can go an entire career without scoring 50 points in a game — Joel Embiid did it twice in less than a month. After dropping 59 on the Utah Jazz on Nov. 13, Embiid hits the Charlotte Hornets with an encore performance as he trails James Harden up the court before collecting a behind-the-back pass from his All-Star teammate and rumbling down the lane for a strong two-handed slam. Embiid became the first player to score 50 points twice during the 2022-23 campaign as well as the third Philadelphia 76er to hit the mark multiple times in the same season after putting up 53 points, 12 rebounds and three assists in a 131-113 win on December 11, 2022.

Now that’s how you announce your presence to the rest of the league. A year after averaging just three points per game in less than eight minutes a night, Nick Richards has burst on to the scene for the Charlotte Hornets in the early stages of the 2022-23 season. After erupting for 19 points and 10 rebounds in the season opener, the reserve center one-ups himself against the Atlanta Hawks. Executing a flawless pick-and-roll with fellow reserve James Bouknight, Richards takes a bounce pass from his teammate and rises up for an emphatic one-handed slam. It was a perfect game for Richards, who made all nine of his field goal attempts in a 20-point, 11-rebound, two-block effort in 20 efficient minutes in Charlotte’s 126-109 win on October 23, 2022.

If you’re searching for silky-smooth finesse in 7-foot form, look no further. Jonas Valančiūnas shows that nimbleness comes in big packages as he works his magic in the low block, narrowly avoiding a Myles Turner steal before turning himself back around with a slick behind-the-back dribble and soft-touch layup. The veteran center stepped up for a Pelicans squad missing several key contributors, posting 20 points, 12 rebounds and five assists in his squad’s 113-93 victory over the Indiana Pacers on December 26, 2022.

Now on his fifth team in five seasons, Isaiah Hartenstein seems to be finding a home with the New York Knicks. Playing against the Boston Celtics, Hartenstein shows off his fundamentals, crashing the boards and turning a Jalen Brunson misfire into a one-handed put-back slam right on top of a helpless opponent. In a 38-minute run for Hartenstein, the big man made five of his six field goals for 10 points, while adding 14 rebounds, an assist and a block in the November 5, 2022 Atlantic Division showdown.

With the defending champions in town, Dennis Smith Jr. made sure to bring his best. After a defensive gem on Steph Curry at the end of regulation forced overtime, the Charlotte Hornets point guard decided to play the role of hero on offense in the extra session. With his team holding a tight three-point lead, Smith Jr. collects a foul line jump ball and gets right to work, driving strong to the hole and flipping a high-arcing layup over the outstretched fingertips of Andrew Wiggins. The Hornets never looked back from there, and Smith Jr.’s 13 points, nine rebounds and eight assists were instrumental in the 120-113 win over the Golden State Warriors on October 29, 2022.

Hustling back on defense tends to yield good fortune. Following a late-game turnover against the Detroit Pistons, John Collins doesn’t pout over his giveaway to Cade Cunningham — he gets even. The sixth-year Atlanta Hawks forward trails Cunningham the entire way up the court, waiting for his perfect opportunity to strike before pinning a highlight-reel block against the backboard. Collins’ refusal to give up on the play — as well as his 19 points, 11 rebounds, four blocks and a steal — led the Hawks to a hard-fought 118-113 road victory on October 26, 2022.

Playing without two of their top scorers, the New Orleans Pelicans needed to play flawless basketball to beat the Dallas Mavericks. Trey Murphy III took the challenge literally. Pressed into starting duty, the second-year guard stepped up in a big way, taking a pass in the corner before making his move toward the basket and throwing down a ferocious slam. Murphy III made all eight of his field-goal attempts — including four triples — as well as both free throws en route to 22 points and five rebounds in his squad’s exciting 113-111 win on October 25, 2022.

Jalen Brunson’s handle is so shifty that even extremely athletic players have trouble keeping up. Jeremy Sochan puts in an admirable effort in trying to stick with the New York Knicks point guard, but Brunson’s bag of tricks proves to be too deep as he eludes the San Antonio Spurs rookie in a man-to-man matchup long enough to bury a mid-range jumper. Brunson erupted for a career-high 38 points on 17 of 27 shooting and the Knicks needed every one of them — along with seven rebounds and six assists — in the 117-114 nail-biting victory on January 4, 2023.

Following a solid inaugural campaign in which he was selected to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team, Chris Duarte is back for more in Year 2. Showing no fear against the star-powered Brooklyn Nets, Duarte takes an inbound pass at the far end of the court and races up the floor knowing full well that the third-quarter clock is draining fast. Despite having two defenders right in his path, the Indiana Pacers guard pulls up from 36 feet and calmly drains the pull-up jumper to beat the buzzer. The Nets won the game, but the Pacers are feeling good about Duarte’s future after a career-high 30-point effort on October 31, 2022.

He’s so good that he doesn’t even need his eyes to make spectacular plays. Such is life when you’re Giannis Antetokounmpo, who continues to make the impossible happen on a nightly basis. Returning from a two-game absence against the Atlanta Hawks, the Milwaukee Bucks superstar makes up for lost time by flicking a no-look over-the-shoulder dime to a waiting Bobby Portis Jr., who finishes the possession with a layup. It was another typical night at the office for the two-time MVP, who finished the November 14, 2022 game with 27 points, eight rebounds and four assists.

Not many men are capable of putting 7-foot Brook Lopez on a poster, much less someone six inches shorter than the veteran big man. Spencer Dinwiddie cares very little about height differences, as the Dallas Mavericks guard drives strong into the lane and takes flight before throwing down a ferocious one-handed dunk over the Milwaukee Bucks center. In addition to his throwdown, Dinwiddie’s night featured 15 points, four rebounds, four assists, a steal and a block on December 9, 2022.

After giving the Chicago Bulls a one-point advantage in the final minutes of a close contest, Nikola Vučević was far from finished. The two-time All-Star hustles back on defense against the Washington Wizards and registers a clutch block on a layup attempt by a driving Monte Morris to preserve the lead. The Bulls would never trail again thanks to huge performances on both ends by the veteran center, who posted 25 points, 11 rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks in Chicago’s 115-111 win on December 7, 2022.

Bench players unafraid to take clutch shots can separate good teams from special ones, and Chris Boucher shows no fear against the Dallas Mavericks with the game on the line. With his team clinging to a one-point lead late in the fourth quarter, the sixth-year reserve forward helps the Toronto Raptors out in a big way by draining a tough fadeaway from the paint over Reggie Bullock. It was a dagger that kept the game out of reach, as Boucher’s 22-point, 13-rebound effort was crucial in Toronto’s 105-100 triumph on November 26, 2022.

Tyrese Haliburton was a revelation in 26 games for the Indiana Pacers after a midseason acquisition in February 2022. To the delight of Pacers fans, the talented third-year point guard has picked up right where he left off to open the 2022-23 season. In Indiana’s first game against the Washington Wizards, Haliburton pushes the ball up the court and takes on all comers, using a yo-yo-dribble-hesi combination to fool the defense before clearing a path to the rim and throwing down a dunk. Haliburton scored a game-high 26 points to go with four rebounds and seven assists on October 19, 2022.

No inbound is a given when Jose Alvarado is on the prowl. The New Orleans Pelicans reserve guard is a bundle of energy whenever he’s on the court, not to mention waiting for the offense to make a mistake that he can capitalize on. Following a made free throw by Zion Williamson, the Houston Rockets throw the ball in while expecting to begin the next possession. But Alvarado has other ideas, picking Kevin Porter Jr.’s pocket, ending up with a steal and layup in the blink of an eye. Alvarado gave a huge lift to the second unit, converting 5-of-6 field-goal attempts for 12 points, two rebounds, five assists and three steals in 20 minutes amidst a 119-106 victory on November 12, 2022.

When it comes to putting players in position to thrive, few teams do it better than the Miami Heat. What a find Max Strus has been, as the shooting guard has gone from undrafted free agent to a vital cog for a team with playoff aspirations. In the midst of a 20-point night on November 16, 2022, Strus shows he’s not afraid to get to the rack, racing up the court after a long inbound pass to catch the ball in stride and throw down a high-flying dunk.

Trailing by three points with 1.3 seconds remaining in regulation, Matt Ryan was subbed into the game with one objective — tie the ballgame. Mission accomplished for the Los Angeles Lakers newcomer. Off a perfectly-executed inbound pass from Austin Reaves, the sharpshooting Ryan, in his Top Shot debut, has just enough time to set his feet and force overtime with a corner three-pointer directly in front of the Lakers’ bench. Ryan played a critical role for the Lakers in just his sixth career game, chipping in 11 points, two rebounds, an assist and three triples in a much-needed 120-117 win over the New Orleans Pelicans on November 2, 2022.

It appears that Damion Lee brought his clutch championship form with him to the desert. In his first game with the Phoenix Suns after a four-year run with the Golden State Warriors, Lee makes Suns fans elated that he’s on their side. Tied in the final seconds of a fourth-quarter battle, Lee takes a pass from three-time All-Star Devin Booker and makes his move, driving with determination toward the basket and draining a difficult game-winning fall-away jumper with 9.7 seconds left. Lee scored 11 points off the bench — all in the fourth quarter — to go with two rebounds and two assists in helping the Suns erase a 22-point third-quarter deficit to stun the Dallas Mavericks 107-105 on October 19, 2022.

Even in Year 14, Wesley Matthews hasn’t lost his magic touch. The Milwaukee Bucks guard has always been a marksman from deep and has settled in as a dependable role player for a team with championship aspirations. Trailing by two with less than a minute remaining against the Philadelphia 76ers in Milwaukee’s 2022-23 opener, Matthews puts his clutch gene on display, burying a go-ahead triple with under 25 seconds remaining to silence the hostile Philly crowd. Matthews had eight points, five rebounds, two assists and a block in 20 minutes off the bench in the 90-88 win on October 20, 2022.

After playing 35 bruising minutes against the Los Angeles Lakers, Jerami Grant decided that he wasn’t interested in five more. Locked in a tie game on the road in the closing seconds of the fourth quarter, Grant shows no fear when confronted by LeBron James, aggressively driving straight at the Lakers’ star before getting the go-ahead bucket to fall with three seconds left. Grant’s clutch shot — as well as his 16 points, two rebounds and an assist — earned the Portland Trail Blazers their third straight win to open the season, a thrilling 106-104 victory on October 23, 2022.

With only seven healthy players against the Washington Wizards, the Heat needed their veteran point guard to empty the tank and he was happy to oblige. The six-time All-Star drives with determination into the lane, sidesteps a couple of defenders then rises up on the baseline to drain a 19-footer over the much taller Kristaps Porziņģis. Barrett takes on the Indiana Pacers defense all by himself, refusing to be denied as he crosses halfcourt and drives with determination down the heart of the lane before blowing by his initial defender and finishing with a powerful one-handed slam. As long as it goes in it doesn’t matter how you got there. Locked in a tight battle against the Memphis Grizzlies, Marcus Smart drives into the lane before coming head-to-head with Santi Aldama. Smart absorbs a body blow that sends him toppling to the hardwood and on the way down flicks up a desperation shot that somehow finds the bottom of the net. The underrated Boston Celtics point guard produced a solid all-around game with 15 points, seven rebounds and 12 assists in his team’s hard-fought 109-106 victory on November 7, 2022.

When he’s feeling it from long range, Kevin Love is one of the most feared bench weapons in the NBA. The New York Knicks found that out the hard way, as the five-time All-Star takes a pass on the wing from Donovan Mitchell and buries a contested triple while drawing a foul. Love had a fourth quarter for the ages, connecting on five three-pointers and scoring 16 points as the Cleveland Cavaliers sank the visiting Knicks by out-scoring them by 22 points in the period. All told, Love scored 29 points in just 22 minutes on 8-for-13 from long range while adding eight rebounds in the 121-108 triumph on October 30, 2022.

Against the Indiana Pacers it was Harrison Barnes’ turn, as the veteran forward catches a pass from Domantas Sabonis in the paint and goes right up for a difficult up-and-under reverse layup between two defenders. The win was Sacramento’s eighth in 11 games, and their 11-9 start is the franchise’s best since the 2004-05 season. Barnes played a big role, scoring 22 points to pair with five rebounds, two assists and two steals in the 137-114 win on November 30, 2022.

When Brown picks off a Mitchell bounce pass, he and teammate Marcus Smart motor the other way on a 2-on-1 advantage. Brown collects a bounce pass and then takes flight, slamming an angry one-handed dunk on top of his helpless opponent. Goga Bitadze and the Indiana Pacers dropped their final 10 games of the preceding season, riding a months-long losing streak that stretched to 12 after falling in their first two games of the 2022-23 campaign. In just his sixth professional game, Mark Williams gave the Charlotte Hornets an exciting glimpse into their future. Making his Top Shot debut, the 15th overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft sends a Josh Giddey shot into the crowd with a merciless rejection at the rim. The Hornets set franchise records in a season opener for points in an opening half with Rozier at the center of it all. Rozier finished with 24 points, six rebounds and six assists in Charlotte’s runaway 129-102 victory on October 19, 2022.

Taking advantage of a favorable one-on-one matchup with Austin Reaves, Mitchell hits his defender with some slick dribbles before suddenly pulling up for a stepback triple that helps the Cavs pull away late in the fourth quarter. Mitchell logged his second 40-point performance of the season, posting 43 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals in Cleveland’s 116-102 triumph on December 6, 2022.

When Tatum dislodges the ball, Kuminga’s motor keeps running as he scoops it up before going out of bounds and finishes the second-chance opportunity with a dunk. When Yuta Watanabe gets the ball in his hands, he hesitates for a moment before deciding to pull up from deep himself. Ever the cool customer, Kuzma dumps off an opportune pass to Hachimura, who goes up, under and up again in order to get a reverse layup to fall.
