Most players can go an entire career without scoring 50 points in a game — Joel Embiid did it twice in less than a month. After dropping 59 on the Utah Jazz on Nov. 13, Embiid hits the Charlotte Hornets with an encore performance as he trails James Harden up the court before collecting a behind-the-back pass from his All-Star teammate and rumbling down the lane for a strong two-handed slam. Embiid became the first player to score 50 points twice during the 2022-23 campaign as well as the third Philadelphia 76er to hit the mark multiple times in the same season after putting up 53 points, 12 rebounds and three assists in a 131-113 win on December 11, 2022.

Luka Dončić only played three quarters, so he made sure to announce his presence loud and with authority. The Portland Trail Blazers have no defensive solutions for the Dallas Mavericks superstar, who pump fakes a defender out of his sneakers and fools another with a head fake while driving strong to the rim before elevating for a massive one-handed slam. Despite sitting out the entire fourth quarter, Dončić dropped 33 points, six rebounds, nine assists and five triples in his squad’s 130-110 victory on December 16, 2022.

He’s so good that he doesn’t even need his eyes to make spectacular plays. Such is life when you’re Giannis Antetokounmpo, who continues to make the impossible happen on a nightly basis. Returning from a two-game absence against the Atlanta Hawks, the Milwaukee Bucks superstar makes up for lost time by flicking a no-look over-the-shoulder dime to a waiting Bobby Portis Jr., who finishes the possession with a layup. It was another typical night at the office for the two-time MVP, who finished the November 14, 2022 game with 27 points, eight rebounds and four assists.

Domantas Sabonis and the resurgent Sacramento Kings keep checking boxes off their list — and now the franchise has its first triple-double since the 2018-19 season. Sabonis proves to be a jack-of-all-trades against the Chicago Bulls, taking advantage of a favorable matchup as he pump fakes and pivots his way through traffic before his patience is rewarded with a layup. Joe Harris gives it his best shot on defense, but there was no slowing down the Miami Heat center as he gets in front of his initial defender and rumbles down the lane before soaring through the air and finishing with an earth-shaking dunk. The Brooklyn Nets won a nail-biter, but Adebayo’s throwdown won’t be forgotten anytime soon as the 2020 NBA All-Star finished with 10 points, eight rebounds and two assists on January 8, 2023.

Steph Curry’s shooting and scoring abilities get their just praise — but how about some love for the way the Golden State Warriors star gets his buckets? Granted an opportunity to strike from the corner, Curry sets his sight on the rim, splitting two defenders with a smooth behind-the-back maneuver, then finishes at the cup with a layup. The four-time champion scores two of his game-high 24 points on the play while also chipping in six rebounds, 10 assists, two steals and five triples in his squad’s 111-101 win on November 18, 2022.

Jabari Walker was so pumped to hit the floor in his NBA debut that he decided to race the entire length of it. Once the 57th overall selection snares a defensive rebound he is off and running, traversing the court and hitting the Denver Nuggets defense with a behind-the-back move to gain entry to the lane before finishing with a runner in the paint. Walker had a busy first four professional minutes, making his only shot for two points while adding two rebounds and an assist in the 135-110 Portland Trail Blazers triumph on October 24, 2022.

Bryce McGowens may have missed his only shot attempt in his first NBA game, but he made up for it with defense. Squaring off against the San Antonio Spurs in the first game of the season, the 40th overall pick thwarts a Spurs drive to the basket with a block and change of possession for his new squad. The first four minutes of McGowens’ NBA career were a successful first impression, as his first career block made an impact as the Charlotte Hornets won all four quarters in the runaway 129-102 victory on October 19, 2022.

On a nightly basis, Nikola Jokić makes the difficult look routine. The two-time reigning MVP has something special planned for the Houston Rockets, catching the ball in the post before burying a turnaround baseline jumper in rhythm on just one foot. The four-time All-Star tormented the Rockets all night, scoring 32 points on 11-of-17 shooting — his third time hitting 30 points in the past four games — while also grabbing 12 rebounds and dishing out eight assists in the Denver Nuggets’ 129-113 victory on November 28, 2022.

Trailing by three points with 1.3 seconds remaining in regulation, Matt Ryan was subbed into the game with one objective — tie the ballgame. Mission accomplished for the Los Angeles Lakers newcomer. Off a perfectly-executed inbound pass from Austin Reaves, the sharpshooting Ryan, in his Top Shot debut, has just enough time to set his feet and force overtime with a corner three-pointer directly in front of the Lakers’ bench. Ryan played a critical role for the Lakers in just his sixth career game, chipping in 11 points, two rebounds, an assist and three triples in a much-needed 120-117 win over the New Orleans Pelicans on November 2, 2022.

When you’re on the court with LeBron James as your teammate, it’s only a matter of time before opportunity knocks. Following a thunderous James rejection of Paul George, Austin Reaves scoops up the loose ball and motors the other way in transition before lobbing a flawless alley-oop pass to Lonnie Walker IV, who finishes the slam to get the home crowd on its feet. Reaves had an effective 22-minute run off the bench, posting four points, four rebounds and two assists in the Los Angeles Lakers’ intra-city rivalry game against the LA Clippers on October 20, 2022.

It doesn’t get much better than a game-winning buzzer beater in your first NBA season, but such is reality for Indiana Pacers rookie Andrew Nembhard. Nembhard gets the opportunity thanks to a Tyrese Haliburton offensive board in the closing seconds, and when Haliburton can’t find his own shot after some dribble maneuvers, he spots Nembhard on the wing. The moment wasn’t too big for the 31st overall pick, as he did not shy away from unleashing a dagger over the outstretched fingertips of LeBron James. Nembhard connected on 4 of his 7 three-point attempts for 12 points, four rebounds and two blocks, helping his team rally from a 17-point fourth quarter deficit in the 116-115 win over the Los Angeles Lakers on November 28, 2022.

All these years later and James Harden is still out here equaling franchise records. In a vintage Harden performance, the 10-time All-Star lights up the LA Clippers using everything in his toolbox — facilitating transition opportunities with long outlet passes, assisting on multiple Joel Embiid buckets inside, strong drives to the basket that end in layups or trips to the foul line and of course the patented stepback trey that defenders still can’t stop. Harden’s 20 points, 11 rebounds and career-high 21 assists — which matched a Philadelphia 76ers franchise record — helped his squad erase a 20-point deficit en route to a 119-114 victory on December 23, 2022.

Tyrese Haliburton was a revelation in 26 games for the Indiana Pacers after a midseason acquisition in February 2022. To the delight of Pacers fans, the talented third-year point guard has picked up right where he left off to open the 2022-23 season. In Indiana’s first game against the Washington Wizards, Haliburton pushes the ball up the court and takes on all comers, using a yo-yo-dribble-hesi combination to fool the defense before clearing a path to the rim and throwing down a dunk. Haliburton scored a game-high 26 points to go with four rebounds and seven assists on October 19, 2022.

Fresh off achieving a national championship in college, Christian Braun has brought an unselfish, winning style of basketball with him to the Denver Nuggets. Against the Utah Jazz, the rookie shows he’s willing to do whatever it takes to secure a victory, fearlessly stepping in front of Malik Beasley to turn a wide-open dunk into a ferocious rejection. Braun continued to make an impact off the Nuggets bench, chipping in 10 points, six rebounds, an assist and a block in Denver’s 117-101 triumph on October 28, 2022.

In just his sixth professional game, Mark Williams gave the Charlotte Hornets an exciting glimpse into their future. Making his Top Shot debut, the 15th overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft sends a Josh Giddey shot into the crowd with a merciless rejection at the rim. Williams shot a sparkling 7-for-7 for a career-high 17 points and 13 rebounds, along with two assists, two steals and two blocks in 21 productive minutes off the bench in his squad’s 121–113 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder on December 29, 2022.

Playing in just his fifth game with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Mitchell receives a rude awakening courtesy of the Boston Celtics’ 2021 All-Star. When Brown picks off a Mitchell bounce pass, he and teammate Marcus Smart motor the other way on a 2-on-1 advantage. Brown collects a bounce pass and then takes flight, slamming an angry one-handed dunk on top of his helpless opponent. Brown put together a solid performance of 32 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals on October 28, 2022.

On the road facing the Golden State Warriors, Bey’s Detroit Pistons found themselves tied with 2.3 seconds remaining following a clutch Klay Thompson three-pointer. On the ensuing possession, Killian Hayes inbounds to Bey and the third-year forward doesn’t miss, letting fly a game-winning triple at the buzzer while falling backward. It was one of four treys for Bey, who on a floor filled with precision marksmen hit the biggest shot of the night, getting the last laugh by posting 17 points, three rebounds and two steals in the 122-119 win on January 4, 2023.

If you leave Kevin Huerter this wide open in the closing seconds of a tight game then plan on leaving with a loss. The third time's the charm for Huerter and the Sacramento Kings, who stay with the play by collecting two offensive boards after a pair of De’Aaron Fox midrange misfires. When the ball makes its way back out to the perimeter, Keegan Murray swings it to an all-alone Huerter who drains the backbreaking triple with 9.2 seconds remaining. The game-winner was the cap on a huge night for Huerter, who finished with a team-high 30 points on 12 of 18 shooting to pair with two rebounds, two assists and six three-pointers in the thrilling 126-125 win on December 30, 2022.

Charging straight into the lane against three San Antonio Spurs defenders is not for the faint of heart — but it is for Zion Williamson. The New Orleans Pelicans All-Star forward scoops up a bounce pass on the elbow and makes his move, putting the ball on the floor and muscling his way to a layup despite spinning his way into a traffic jam underneath the basket. Williamson poured in a season-high 32 points on 14-of-18 from the field to go along with 11 rebounds and two steals in his squad’s 129-110 win on November 23, 2022.

Donovan Mitchell’s honeymoon with the Cleveland Cavaliers continued against the Los Angeles Lakers. Taking advantage of a favorable one-on-one matchup with Austin Reaves, Mitchell hits his defender with some slick dribbles before suddenly pulling up for a stepback triple that helps the Cavs pull away late in the fourth quarter. Mitchell logged his second 40-point performance of the season, posting 43 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals in Cleveland’s 116-102 triumph on December 6, 2022.

One year after his breakout campaign, Jordan Poole continues to evolve offensively. Pressed into starting duty for a resting Klay Thompson, the fourth-year guard keeps the Golden State Warriors offense humming with a strong drive into the paint before dropping off a beauty of a behind-the-back no-look pass to a cutting Jonathan Kuminga. Poole’s 21 points, two rebounds, five assists and five three-pointers helped deliver the Warriors a 120-101 win over the Houston Rockets on December 3, 2022.

Scottie Barnes’ ability to impact a game on multiple fronts is what won him the NBA Rookie of the Year award. In Year 2, it’s clear that this is still very much the case. Competing against the Detroit Pistons, Barnes takes a pass in stride while driving into the lane, then drops off a slick one-handed bounce pass while airborne to a cutting Dalano Banton. Barnes’ eight points, five rebounds, four assists, one steal and one block made a major impact in Toronto’s 115-111 victory on November 14, 2022.

Jamal Murray looks like his old self again, which is bad news for the rest of the league. Against the Los Angeles Lakers, the Denver point guard uses a pick from Nikola Jokić to gain access into the lane. Met by a wall of defenders, Murray wisely passes up the shot attempt and instead opts for an acrobatic dish to his MVP teammate, who punctuates the possession with a floater. Murray produced 13 points, four rebounds, six assists and two steals in helping Denver prevail 110-99 on October 26, 2022.

In year 15, Russell Westbrook can still turn any pass on the court into an assist. The Detroit Pistons learned that the hard way as Westbrook — inbounding far away from the basket — needed less than two seconds to whip a three-quarter court laser into the hands of Lonnie Walker IV, who buries the catch-and-shoot triple to beat the halftime buzzer. Ten of Westbrook’s game-high 12 assists came in the first half, as the nine-time All-Star added 10 points and five rebounds in the Los Angeles Lakers’ 128-121 victory on November 18, 2022.

Almost a quarter of the way into the 2022-23 season, one thing has become clear — if Jericho Sims is on the court, he’s probably going to dunk on you. The New York Knicks’ reserve center continues to be his squad’s resident alley-oop recipient, this time against the Utah Jazz as he gets teed up for a perfectly-executed lob from Immanuel Quickley. The second-year big man was strong in 25 productive minutes, making 5-of-7 field-goal attempts for 11 points, while adding 13 rebounds, two assists and a steal in the Knicks’ 118-111 road win on November 15, 2022.

Now that’s how you announce your presence to the rest of the league. A year after averaging just three points per game in less than eight minutes a night, Nick Richards has burst on to the scene for the Charlotte Hornets in the early stages of the 2022-23 season. After erupting for 19 points and 10 rebounds in the season opener, the reserve center one-ups himself against the Atlanta Hawks. Executing a flawless pick-and-roll with fellow reserve James Bouknight, Richards takes a bounce pass from his teammate and rises up for an emphatic one-handed slam. It was a perfect game for Richards, who made all nine of his field goal attempts in a 20-point, 11-rebound, two-block effort in 20 efficient minutes in Charlotte’s 126-109 win on October 23, 2022.

After taking the G League by storm with his explosive scoring prowess, Jaden Hardy was ready for the big stage. The Dallas Mavericks rookie introduces himself to the New Orleans Pelicans in style, using his momentum to blow by Kira Lewis Jr. with his left hand into the lane before switching to his right and finishing with an up-and-under layup around Willy Hernangomez. Hardy matched his career-high with 15 points on 7 for 9 shooting while adding two steals in his squad’s 127-117 win on January 7, 2023.

As the LA Clippers were quick to discover, fancy footwork in the frontcourt is no fun to defend. Now in his second season, Houston Rockets center Alperen Şengün continues to impress — after setting a screen for a teammate, the 6-foot-11 Turkish big man collapses toward the basket and catches a pass in the paint before pivoting around his defender with a nimble spin move. The subsequent layup was good for two of Şengün’s team-high 26 points, and he also chipped in 13 rebounds, two assists and a steal in the November 2, 2022 Western Conference showdown.

Even when you send a double team Trae Young’s way, he still finds ways to beat you. When two Detroit Pistons converge behind the arc to prevent him from bombing a triple, the two-time All-Star does the next best thing and whips a no-look pass into the post to Clint Capela, who converts the layup attempt while drawing a foul. Young’s elite ability to make any shot or pass makes him nearly impossible to defend, as his 36 points, two rebounds, 12 assists and four triples were enough to sink the Pistons 136-112 on October 28, 2022.

Jalen Brunson’s handle is so shifty that even extremely athletic players have trouble keeping up. Jeremy Sochan puts in an admirable effort in trying to stick with the New York Knicks point guard, but Brunson’s bag of tricks proves to be too deep as he eludes the San Antonio Spurs rookie in a man-to-man matchup long enough to bury a mid-range jumper. Brunson erupted for a career-high 38 points on 17 of 27 shooting and the Knicks needed every one of them — along with seven rebounds and six assists — in the 117-114 nail-biting victory on January 4, 2023.

The Utah Jazz didn’t learn their lesson the first time they tried to trespass in Deandre Ayton’s paint, so he was more than willing to remind them again. Mike Conley gains access to the lane with a pretty crossover move but fails to account for the Phoenix Suns’ center, who viciously denies the attempt. When the deflection falls into Conley’s hands again, he decides to give it another shot and is promptly denied. The Suns lost a heartbreaker, but Ayton pulled his weight with 17 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists and three blocks on November 18, 2022.

Following a historic first quarter, there was no stopping LaMelo Ball and the Charlotte Hornets. Ball and his teammates were in perfect synergy all night, as he gathers a dump-off from Mason Plumlee before whipping a fabulous no-look pass back to the cutting center that ends in an easy deuce. The Hornets matched an NBA record with a staggering 51 first-quarter points, and Ball’s 24 points, three rebounds, 12 assists, two steals and seven three-pointers kept the Milwaukee Bucks chasing all night in Charlotte’s runaway 138-109 victory on January 6, 2023.

Just in case anybody forgot, there isn’t a shot on the court that Fred VanVleet can’t make. After missing the Toronto Raptors’ previous three games with an injury, the 2022 first-time All-Star issues a harsh reminder to the Chicago Bulls at how deadly his stroke is when he’s feeling it. The seventh-year point guard shakes off suffocating defensive pressure from Chicago’s Ayo Dosunmu, as VanVleet dribbles behind his back before absorbing contact and somehow getting an off-balance jumper to fall. VanVleet was at his very best, producing season-highs of 30 points and 11 assists to go with five rebounds and three-pointers apiece in Toronto’s 113-104 victory on November 6, 2022.

For the 20th time in his decorated career, Paul George did something most NBA players won’t sniff even once — score 40 points in a game. Against the Sacramento Kings, the seven-time All-Star enters total domination mode, taking a pass atop the key before stepping on the accelerator and hitting the defense with an unguardable spin move en route to two of his 40. The LA Clippers needed every one of them to get past the pesky Kings, as George’s 40 points, six rebounds, six assists and two steals were the difference in the 111-109 road win on October 22, 2022. The output made George the 14th active player to score 40 or more in a game at least 20 times.

Jaren Jackson Jr. made sure that it would be a happy New Year for the Memphis Grizzlies. Kicking off 2023 in style, Jackson Jr. protects the rim with vigor against the Sacramento Kings when he blocks a driving Malik Monk not once but twice. The Grizzlies’ talented fifth-year power forward made magic happen on both ends of the court, tallying 14 points, seven rebounds, two assists and three rejections in helping his squad win its third consecutive game, a 118-108 decision on January 1, 2023.

If you didn’t know Dalano Banton’s name before, you sure do now. With his shorthanded Toronto Raptors missing three key players against the Detroit Pistons, Banton took the opportunity to introduce himself. The second-year guard was a star on both ends, first creating a steal when he picks rookie Jaden Ivey’s pocket and then capping off the possessions with an emphatic slam on the other end. Banton exploded for a career-high 27 points while also chipping in four rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocks in Toronto’s gritty 115-111 triumph on November 14, 2022.

The best in the business know how to improvise on the fly — just ask Kawhi Leonard. The two-time champion and NBA Finals MVP triggers his backup plan on a strong drive to the basket, first thinking dunk before deciding on a difficult reverse layup to avoid having his attempt swatted by a trailing Kyle Kuzma. Leonard scored in a variety of ways, tallying a game-high 31 points along with nine rebounds and three steals as his LA Clippers staged a fourth-quarter rally to send the Washington Wizards to their ninth-straight loss, a 102-93 decision on December 17, 2022.

Now in his fourth season, Keldon Johnson has blossomed from a very good player into the face of the San Antonio Spurs’ offensive attack. Following a timely dish from teammate Josh Richardson, Johnson takes care of the rest, pump faking a defender out of his shoes before lining up and draining a wide-open corner three-pointer. Johnson scored a team-high 33 points to go with three rebounds, four assists, two steals and six triples in a 129-124 triumph over the Chicago Bulls on October 28, 2022.

On a night when his Cleveland Cavaliers shot better than 60 percent from the field, Darius Garland was happy to play the role of facilitator. He looks good doing so too, deftly spinning his way around a Philadelphia 76ers defender while catching a pass, then whipping a one-handed laser pass through traffic to a wide-open Dean Wade underneath the basket. Garland deposited 21 points while also adding two rebounds and nine assists in Cleveland’s 113-85 win on November 30, 2022.

Never underestimate how big of an impact fit can have on a player’s success with a team. After being waived by the Philadelphia 76ers a couple of days before the start of the season, Charles Bassey quickly found himself a new home with the San Antonio Spurs. It hasn’t taken long for the second-year reserve center to leave a lasting impression, as he shows off his hustle and defensive aptitude by chasing down George Hill of the Milwaukee Bucks and emphatically spiking his shot attempt into the hardwood. Bassey got busy in just 18 minutes, producing five points, 14 rebounds, four assists and four blocks in San Antonio’s impressive 111-93 win on November 11, 2022.

Thomas Bryant proves to be adept at turning garbage into gold for the Los Angeles Lakers when a Dennis Schröder triple is off the mark, grabbing the offensive board through sheer force of will and depositing the put-back for a critical two points. Aldama makes the New York Knicks pay for leaving him open, finishing the play with a one-handed slam, two of his 18 points to go with a career-high 11 rebounds in Memphis’ 115-112 overtime win on October 19, 2022.
