Stewart drains the triple, earning the points and steal thanks to her hustle en route to 25 points, eight rebounds, four assists, three steals and a block, helping the Storm prevail over the Dallas Wings 84-79 on June 12, 2022.

It’s never easy to say goodbye to a league legend, especially one with so much left in the tank. In her final regular season home contest, Sylvia Fowles shows she is still very much a frontcourt force to be reckoned with, displaying her notorious strength in the post by grabbing an entry pass and welcoming all defensive challengers. Despite encountering a double team with her back to the basket, the Minnesota Lynx star improvises, taking a couple dribbles before rising up for a challenging one-handed turnaround while fading away. The eight-time All-Star will retire as the league’s all-time leader in field-goal percentage, rebounds and double-doubles. Owners of the league’s fastest-paced offense two years in a row, Las Vegas Aces guards don’t waste time racking up highlights. In the blink of an eye, Jackie Young leaves a Seattle Storm defender in the dust, opting out of her patented dribble pull-up in favor of a nifty hesitation move for an easy score. Young, a first-time All-Star, helped fuel an 85-74 win over a title-contending Storm team on May 8, 2022, putting in 19 points on 6-for-10 shooting, along with three rebounds, three assists, two three-pointers and a steal.

That buzzer-beating triple helped the Washington Mystics open up a late 12-point lead on their way to an 85-66 victory on July 6, 2022. Leading the way, Delle Donne contributed a game-high 26 points, eight rebounds, an assist and two three-pointers.

No, there’s nothing Diana Taurasi can’t do with a ball in her hands, and yes, she still surprises us with her ability to conjure up magic. Beginning behind the arc, the 10-time All-Star instantly fools the first defender out of her shoes with a deceptive head fake before putting the ball on the floor and tricking another with a highlight-reel behind-the-back dribble while muscling herself toward the basket. For her encore, the Phoenix Mercury legend confronts two more opponents at the rim, then flips a lightning-quick assist around the wall to a cutting, opportunistic teammate. As usual, Taurasi was in the middle of all the action, scoring 14 points to go with three rebounds, seven assists, a block and a steal against the Las Vegas Aces on May 21, 2022.

A deep, productive bench is a critical advantage for any team, especially double-overtime. Not afraid to get to work in the extra frame, Minnesota Lynx reserve Jessica Shepard puts her strength on display, catching a pass in the post and beating her defender one-on-one with a pretty spin move while absorbing contact for an and-one. Shepard was a key to victory for her squad, chipping in 13 points, 12 rebounds, four assists and two steals in the 118-107 victory over the Phoenix Mercury on July 12, 2022.

Sykes was in defense-to-offense mode throughout the Los Angeles Sparks’ 85-77 win, tallying up 15 points, eight assists, three rebounds and three steals on June 25, 2022.

Ogwumike scored 21 of her season-high 35 points in the first half, supporting that explosion with two rebounds, an assist and a pair of steals in the 86-79 victory on July 19, 2022.

With a 4-on-1 numbers advantage, the Connecticut Sun star displays her basketball intelligence by drawing the lone Minnesota Lynx defender toward her and finishing the play with a perfectly-timed dish to a driving teammate. Thomas’ versatile performance earned her the first triple-double of her career, as well as the first in franchise history, in the 94-84 win on July 22, 2022.

It hasn’t taken long for Tina Charles to make a major impact in her new surroundings. Less than a month after signing with the Seattle Storm, Charles displays her reputation as a rim disruptor, dropping into the low block and emphatically rejecting an Atlanta Dream shot from behind thanks to some pinpoint help defense. Charles reached a major milestone in the 82-72 victory, becoming just the fourth player in league history to score 7,000 points in her career, posting 27 points, 15 rebounds, four blocks, four three-pointers, an assist and a steal on July 24, 2022.

The Washington Mystics defense was her latest victim, as Mitchell takes a pass off a pick-and-roll and, using slick handles, slices her way through three defenders in the lane before finishing with an underhand layup. The Indiana Fever guard was in the zone, scoring a team-high 26 points with four assists, three triples and a steal on May 31, 2022.

Fired up with the rock, the Indiana Fever guard fools not one but two Phoenix Mercury defenders with her enviable handle, making one hit the deck for good measure before slicing her way into the lane and calmly sinking a pull-up jumper from inside the elbow. Phoenix had trouble keeping up with Mitchell all day, as she poured in 14 of her game-high 21 points in the first half, adding three rebounds, five assists, a steal and four three-pointers, on June 29, 2022.

Locked in a tight road game against one of the league’s best teams, the Washington Mystics sure were glad to have Elena Delle Donne on their side. With her team clinging to a one-point fourth-quarter lead, Delle Donne plays the hero, receiving an entry pass despite three defenders flanking her. Even with her back to the basket, the two-time MVP and six-time All-Star shows no fear in taking on all comers, rising up for a turnaround fadeaway and providing some scoreboard cushion for her battling squad. It required an overtime period, but Delle Donne helped guide the Mystics to an 87-86 victory over the Las Vegas Aces on June 25, 2022, tallying 19 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, five blocks and a pair of three-pointers.

Defensive grit requires total fearlessness, no matter who you’ve been mandated to stop. Queen Egbo shows she’s up for the challenge, sticking to All-Star Nneka Ogwumike like glue, first rising up to block a driving layup attempt with her left hand before staying with the play and denying Ogwumike again, this time by standing tall and wiping out the second-chance opportunity with both. As the New York Liberty defense collapses inward, Ogunbowale absorbs contact from multiple defenders and somehow flicks a no-look pass over her shoulder to a wide-open teammate in the corner, who finishes by burying the trey. Ogunbowale wowed all game long in her team’s 81-71 victory on May 15, 2022, scoring a game-high 21 points, to go along with four assists, a rebound and a steal.

Matched up against a juggernaut opponent, it pays to get off to a hot start. Not afraid to attack early, Atlanta Dream guard Tiffany Hayes puts the ball on the floor against the Las Vegas Aces, muscles into the lane to confront three defenders, then puts up an off-balance runner that somehow finds the basket for an acrobatic and-one. Hayes scored 11 of her season-high 31 points in the first quarter — along with three rebounds, four triples, a steal and an assist — building a 17-point lead en route to a 92-76 road win on July 19, 2022.

Tiffany Hayes

Strong, quick footwork separates good frontcourt players from truly special ones. Nneka Ogwumike shows she belongs with the latter, catching a teammate’s pass on the low block before getting her defender out of position with a flawless spin move, resulting in a hard-earned lay-in off the glass. The Los Angeles Sparks forward was her usual dominant self, scoring a team-high 23 points to go along with six rebounds, two steals and an assist in a 99-94 win against the Phoenix Mercury on May 25, 2022.

Not so fast, my friend! On a night when her New York Liberty squad set a franchise single-game scoring record, Natasha Howard was there to also ensure all windows and doors were deadbolted on the defensive end. When a Las Vegas Aces ball handler drops a pretty bounce pass to a cutting teammate in the paint, Howard is there waiting, standing tall and earning an emphatic one-handed swat. Howard’s lone rejection bookended an overall solid performance, contributing 18 points, six rebounds, three assists and a three-pointer in the Liberty’s 116-107 road triumph.
