As she laced her sneakers on May 23, 2024 for an early-season contender clash between her old team and her old-but-new-again team, only one of them, unfortunately, would be up for this night’s celebration. Tasked with tilting the scales in a back-and-forth overtime duel, Banham hustles towards the top of the key, finding a sliver of daylight through her teammate’s staggered screen. As a record-breaking 19,103 fans gathered together at the Los Angeles Sparks’ arena, it wouldn’t be long before they confirmed that the highly-anticipated battle between the 2024 WNBA Draft’s No. 1 and No. 2 picks would live up to the hype. Along the way, they were also introduced to one of the Indiana Fever’s early-season unsung heroes. With a stride to match the quickness with which she’s become a fan favorite, Temi Fagbenle races the floor’s length, balancing herself to snag an outlet pass before putting her ability to craft unique at-the-rim scoring angles to the test against 6-foot-7 Li Yueru. Determined to see her efforts in a grueling, double-overtime affair go rewarded with a victory, the up-and-coming big relocates to the 3-point arc, perfectly positioned to punish Seattle’s decision to double her teammate. Given time to line up the seams, Smith calmly buries a clutch, crowd-igniting 3-pointer, extending the Lynx’s lead to eight with just a minute-and-a-half to play. In need of some way to combat the high-powered New York Liberty’s starting five on a night in which they combined for 86 of their team’s 90 points, the Washington Mystics bestowed the unique challenge to a familiar source: their No. 1-ranked scoring bench. Well-versed in the art of scoring in a hurry, Jade Melbourne gets started on an updated example, working free for an outlet pass to set up an isolation atop the key. Detecting a weak spot in New York’s pick-and-roll defense, Melbourne tests her handle, using an explosive dribble to get a step on Ivana Dojkić before extending through contact for a flawlessly-angled, underhand scoop shot. From their well-earned distinction as the WNBA’s No. 1-ranked 3-point shooting team to their ability to run proven, winning lineups far into their bench, the Minnesota Lynx — in more ways than one — have proven to know a thing or two about depth. Setting her focus on making an impact in just her second WNBA game, Alissa Pili exemplifies both, setting her stance in the far-right 3-point corner before catching a cross-court pass on the way to a wide-open spot-up triple and her career’s first-ever professional score. Pili’s milestone triple helped Minnesota carve out a nine-point advantage in the third quarter, a boost they’d use to fuel a second-consecutive victory against the Seattle Storm on May 17, 2024. As the New York Liberty and Indiana Fever prepared to clash in front of both a sellout crowd and a record-setting viewership number, the message couldn’t have been more clear: the potentially-unforgettable duel between some of the WNBA’s most celebrated shooters would command all eyes. For Sabrina Ionescu, that turned out to be a few eyes too many. Attached tightly enough to Ionescu’s back to be her shadow, Carter times her leap flawlessly, winding up to whack the Liberty star’s layup away, forcing an out-of-bounds for good measure. Motivated to provide their head coach —  a former all-time great Liberty star — with a victory in her homecoming, Chicago routinely used her type of energy and intensity in the big-time road win on May 23, 2024. The WNBA’s No. 1 in points scored off the bench, Carter again provided a spark, requiring just 17 minutes to record a 12-point, six-rebound, four-assist, one-block effort.

The front of her jersey may have read “Los Angeles” as she checked in at the three-minute mark of the first quarter. But as one bucket followed another and a new career-high was reached, one could say that Aari McDonald’s performance had “spark” written all over it. Fully within rhythm and in the process of turbocharging her team’s offense, the former 2021 No. 3 pick takes stock of the Fever’s defense, ultimately deciding to test out a pick-and-roll towards the right baseline. Uncovered enough to take her chance, McDonald launches a quick-trigger 3-pointer, connecting on a shot that ultimately fueled both an 11-0 run and a third-quarter lead that the Sparks would maintain for the rest of the game’s duration. At full health, one could argue that few adjectives describe Myisha Hines-Allen’s game as effectively. Challenged into quick thinking after her post touch gets immediately engulfed by New York’s double team, the 2020 All-WNBA Second Team selection remains calm, working her pivot foot before contorting her body entirely to break through the trap for a highlight bucket. Routinely at the top of their game particularly in second quarters, Washington used Hines-Allen’s multifaceted play to slice a once-concerning 16-point deficit to just four by intermission. The valiant effort even afforded them a lead with under five minutes to play, though they would ultimately fall on May 31, 2024. Adding to what’s been a resurgent individual season, Hines-Allen contributed 11 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and one 3-pointer.

With her switch flipped into attack mode during a red-hot second quarter showcase, the six-time All-Star hunts down a driving lane in the pick-and-roll before outwitting Cameron Brink with a deceptive shot fake, setting her path for a reverse-pivot fadeaway jumper. For the Washington Mystics —  the WNBA’s leader in games within five points in the final five minutes —  the crunch-time pressures separating them from their season’s first win couldn’t have been more familiar. In pushing to the finish line by reminding herself that there was no such thing as being “tired,” Ariel Atkins ensured that the Mystics’ buckets were of the familiar type, as well. Burdened with providing Washington’s uncertain offense with a sense of order, Atkins slides atop the 3-point arc, in need of a move to break free of Allisha Gray. Also mindful of Cheyenne Parker-Tyus’ goal of helping, Atkins trusts her craftiness, powerfully gathering through the tight gap for a difficult, one-legged in-traffic score. The Atlanta Dream’s late, 14-4 run ultimately dealt Washington a loss on May 29, 2024. Though, the two-time All-Star again found success against the team she first broke out against back in Year One. Ever dependable on both ends, Atkins concluded with 21 points, eight rebounds, three assists, two steals, one block, and two 3-pointers.

With significant draft capital invested into beefing up their frontcourt firepower, the Chicago Sky have left little guesswork regarding the two areas in which they intend to dominate year-after-year: the low-post area and the paint. Having been around the block a few times —  both literally and figuratively — as a two-time All-Star and former All-Defensive Team selection, Brionna Jones used an impressive two-way sequence to show her opponents how it’s done. Powerful and unyielding against Marina Mabrey’s post entry pass attempt, Jones uses her 6-foot-3 frame to overwhelm Elizabeth Williams before inhaling the pass as if she were the intended recipient. Sprinting the length of the floor in hopes of sequencing her steal with a score, Jones reaps the reward for her ambition, using her teammate’s unselfish dime before dropping in a wide-open layup. Through her role in helping the Connecticut Sun dominate the rebounding, second-chance, and paint points battles, Jones’ team remained the WNBA’s only undefeated team. Ever consistent, Jones needed just 23 minutes to pour in an efficient 16-point, six-rebound, two-steal performance on May 25, 2024.

For two-and-a-half quarters, the Indiana Fever had survived each of the Las Vegas Aces’ inevitable runs, largely through teamwork, resiliency, and being at the right place at the right time. Undeterred, even with every white jersey determined to prevent her from delivering that game-deciding run, Jackie Young drove baseline with a simple message included: even the court’s “sixth defender” wouldn’t be enough for her sixth sense. Officially on Indiana’s radar following a 17-point opening half, Young opts for a screen, setting her path for a right-sided drive. Challenged by a triple whammy of Lexie Hull’s on-ball defense, Kelsey Mitchell’s help rotation, and the closely-approaching out-of-bounds line, Young shows champion-like calmness, taking flight before hitting a cutting teammate to set up a crowd-igniting score. The play encapsulated Young’s night as she kept Las Vegas’ offense on schedule, even without one of her fellow All-Star backcourt mates. History wasn’t far behind as Young recorded her fourth-straight game eclipsing the 20-point, six-assist plateau —  the second player in WNBA history to reach that many games —  ultimately recording 22 points, six assists, two steals, and three triples in the runaway win on May 25, 2024.

In a fourth quarter characterized by missed shots, unfriendly bounces, and the Los Angeles Sparks’ ferocious last-minute comeback attempt, the Dallas Wings were introduced to the benefits of having a player who specializes in the art of second-chance scoring. With her team’s once-sizeable, double-digit lead cut to just one in the game’s final minute, Maddy Siegrist tilts the game’s scales once more, jousting into the crowded paint before snagging her teammate’s miss and reversing it back in for a clutch, crowd-silencing putback. Not even 24 hours removed from a career-best showing —  headlined by seven offensive rebounds —  the 2023 No. 3 selection turned to her tireless motor in helping the Wings capture a one-point victory. A scouting report nightmare for her ability to find holes and hustle opportunities against any defense, Siegrist added another chapter to her breakout campaign on May 26, 2024. Among the elites on the WNBA’s highest season-to-season increases in scoring average, the skilled forward proved impressive, tallying 15 points, eight rebounds, two steals, and one block.

For many, when a storm arrives, the wise choice is often to seek shelter. Ask the Minnesota Lynx, though, and they’ll tell you that as long as Alanna Smith is roaming the floor, their foundation — as well as the rim —  is as well-protected as it gets. On the backs of brilliant ball movement —  headlined by 25 assists on 27 field goals — timely hustle, and a scorching 3-point display, the Lynx, for the third time this season, proved victorious against the Seattle Storm. With a fingerprint on both shot attempts and the game's box score, Smith supplied the intangibles, putting forth seven points, three rebounds, seven assists, three steals, and two blocks in a versatile outing on June 9, 2024.

Circumstances, to some, could’ve appeared dire for the Dallas Wings as they entered the final eight minutes of their season opener in a five-point hole, and momentum solely in the hands of the visiting Chicago Sky. Both calm and completely aware of the scorer they produced, the Wings’ commentators echoed a couldn’t-be-more-true sentiment shared by all in support: “It’s about that time. It’s Arike Ogunbowale time.” One defensive stand away from putting further punctuation to an exclamatory, 14-point fourth quarter explosion, Ogunbowale shuts the door on Chicago’s win attempt, pickpocketing her former teammate before igniting the crowd with a game-sealing fastbreak layup. With a patented, high-arching rainbow shot lofty enough to exceed the reach of the Statue of Liberty, and a dribble swift enough to weave through New York traffic, Marina Mabrey found that she was equipped with everything she needed to hand one of the WNBA’s elites their first loss of the 2024 season. Too talented for any one of the New York Liberty’s perimeter defenders to contend with, Mabrey trusts her chances against two, inviting a pick-and-roll far atop the 3-point arc. Navigating her controlled dribble through the closing elevator doors of the Liberty’s trap, Mabrey speeds through unscathed before evading Courtney Vandersloot’s final attempt at resistance with a smooth, off-hand finish. Perennially one of the WNBA’s most gifted talents, Mabrey and her versatility propelled the Chicago Sky to a fruitful result during their trip to the Big Apple on May 23, 2024. Noticeable in her fire on the defensive end, Mabrey paired it with 21 points —  on an efficient 8-of-13 shooting —  alongside six rebounds, seven assists, and three 3-pointers.

Ask Kayla McBride to explain why season No. 11 in the WNBA has featured both career-highs in efficiency and a spot atop the league’s 3-point leaderboard, and she’ll point to the countless repetitions that she’s put in during overseas play. With her deadeye focused on helping the Minnesota Lynx conquer Commissioner’s Cup play, the three-time All-Star selected quite the location for one of her most memorable world tours: all around the 3-point arc of the Phoenix Mercury’s arena. In need of one final move with the WNBA’s reigning two-time Defensive Player of the Year stonewalling the rim's path, Dangerfield hangs a high-arcing floater off the glass and softly through the net, drawing the crowd’s admiration. Dangerfield’s box score demonstration was of the just-as-quick type, as she used just six minutes of action to turn in seven points, one rebound, and one 3-pointer, contributions that proved key in helping Atlanta prevail in a thriller over the reigning champions.
