After being a supporting player for parts of five seasons with the Phoenix Suns, Mikal Bridges is now the centerpiece of the Brooklyn Nets’ offense after being acquired at the trade deadline. The talented two-way forward shows off his offensive chops while running a give-and-go with Nic Claxton, finishing the possession by knocking down a difficult runner over Joel Embiid. In his Brooklyn debut, Bridges scored a team-high 23 points while adding six rebounds and two steals on February 11, 2023.

With his Milwaukee Bucks on a four-game losing streak, it was time for Giannis Antetokounmpo to pull out all the stops. The two-time MVP puts the Minnesota Timberwolves defense through a long night, beating multiple defenders on dribble drives through traffic to finish at the rim on more than one occasion. Antetokounmpo makes several highlight-reel plays — turning three offensive rebounds into putbacks, including one off his own free throw miss, and another where he soars way up high to throw down a powerful one-handed alley-oop. All told, Antetokounmpo torched the Timberwolves for 43 points on 14 for 23 shooting to pair with 20 rebounds, five assists and two blocks in the 123-114 win on December 30, 2022 — becoming the first player since 1982 to post back-to-back 40/20 games and just the third player in NBA history and first since 1966 to have consecutive games of 40 points, 20 rebounds and five assists. It was also the fourth time in his last six games that the seven-time All-Star topped 40 points.

The Oklahoma City Thunder’s budding superstar haunts the Portland Trail Blazers defense all night, even getting the best of seven-time All-Star Damian Lillard on a drive to the basket while also scoring a majority of his buckets on athletic, highlight-reel drives and midrange pull-ups. Gilgeous-Alexander proves to be a reliable teammate too, working hard on defense to pick up a pair of steals while building chemistry with Josh Giddey — once on a behind-the-back dish and another by threading the needle on a difficult bounce pass that turns into four Thunder points. When the dust had settled, the fifth-year guard had matched his previous career-high of 44 points on 13 of 16 shooting and an 18 for 19 mark at the line, along with three rebounds, seven assists and two steals in the Thunder’s 138-129 victory on February 10, 2023. Gilgeous-Alexander became the first player in franchise history to score 40-plus points on 80 percent shooting.

Butler’s brand is as strong as ever against the Houston Rockets as he executes a perfect backdoor cut that puts himself in prime position to throw down Gabe Vincent’s alley-oop inbounds pass with 0.1 seconds left on the clock. The six-time All-Star rarely disappoints in the clutch, as his 16 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals helped deliver the Miami Heat a 97-95 victory on February 10, 2023.

The fourth overall pick and Summer League MVP sat out the Sacramento Kings’ first contest but made a major impact in game No. 2, gathering a bounce pass from De’Aaron Fox and calmly knocking down a three-pointer for the first bucket of his career. Murray was far from finished, as he connected on seven of his 10 shots for 19 points — the third-most by a Kings rookie in a season debut — while adding five rebounds, two assists, two blocks and three triples in a battle against the LA Clippers on October 22, 2022.

Jalen Duren immediately checks both things off his list for the Detroit Pistons, in one fell swoop corralling a steal and firing an outlet pass up the court to teammate Cory Joseph, who then waits a beat before hitting a cutting Duren in stride. The 13th overall pick in the draft finishes the play by posterizing a helpless Orlando Magic defender. Duren gave his new squad a big lift off the bench, tallying 14 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks in 22 minutes, allowing the Pistons to open the season with a 113-109 win on October 19, 2022.

Tari Eason shows right away that he isn’t afraid of the big stage, as the 17th overall pick of the Houston Rockets catches a long pass from a teammate at the halfcourt logo, then takes flight for a thunderous dunk two steps inside the free-throw line. Despite only playing 15 minutes, Eason made a strong first impression, connecting on 4 of 6 field goal attempts for eight points while grabbing seven rebounds in the October 19, 2022 showdown with the Atlanta Hawks.

Immediately after recording the first steal of his career in his NBA debut, 16th overall pick AJ Griffin takes a bounce pass from Dejounte Murray and shows zero hesitation rising up to drain a three-pointer on his first professional shot. The eighth overall selection in the draft proves immediately helpful to his new New Orleans Pelicans teammates, coming around a screen and driving into the lane against the Brooklyn Nets. Rather than force the issue against multiple defenders, Daniels showcases his distributing ability by dropping off an over-the-shoulder flick to Larry Nance Jr. for a jumper in the paint. Daniels picked up two assists in three minutes, leaving his mark on the Pelicans’ 130-108 season-opening victory on October 19, 2022.

As the third-youngest team entering the 2022-23 season, opportunities abound for San Antonio Spurs rookies. Malaki Branham is one of those players. The 20th overall pick makes his professional debut in San Antonio’s seventh game of the season, scoring the first points of his career on a catch-and-shoot three-pointer off an assist from Keldon Johnson. Branham contributed two rebounds and assists in addition to his five points in a 19-minute run off the bench in San Antonio’s 107-98 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on October 30, 2022.

Count Max Christie among the few who can say they scored their first career basket against the defending NBA champions. Going toe-to-toe with the Golden State Warriors, the 35th overall pick checks into the game in the final minutes and lines up a pure three-pointer that’s all net with a helpful assist from fellow rookie Cole Swider. Christie made his only attempt of the game, finishing his first two minutes as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers with three points and one rebound on October 18, 2022.

Running the pick-and-roll with LeBron James sometimes appears so easy that it might as well be a cheat code. The 19-time All-Star shares the wealth at home against the Washington Wizards, bringing the ball across halfcourt before gaining access to the lane courtesy of a helpful screen. James baits the defense into focusing on him, but instead of taking the shot himself he drops off a smooth between-the-legs bounce pass to a cutting Thomas Bryant for a two-handed throwdown. James scored a game-high 33 points while adding seven rebounds and nine assists in the Los Angeles Lakers’ 119-117 victory on December 18, 2022.

Jake LaRavia was so fired up for his NBA debut that he managed to contribute a little bit of everything. Matched up against the New York Knicks, the 19th overall selection in the draft makes an impact on multiple fronts for the Memphis Grizzlies, first ripping a steal right from Cam Reddish’s hands before firing a long-range missile up the court to new teammate Brandon Clarke for a transition layup. In just 13 minutes of action, LaRavia tallied five points, two rebounds and one assist, steal and block apiece in the Grizzlies’ thrilling 115-112 overtime triumph on October 19, 2022.

When Memphis Grizzlies rookie Kennedy Chandler gets his pocket picked by McKinley Wright IV bringing the ball up the floor, he sets out for revenge. Rather than concede a fastbreak layup to the Dallas Mavericks, the 38th overall pick in the draft turns on the jets, chasing Wright IV down and blocking his shot not once but twice. The Mavericks won big, but Chandler’s defensive tenacity was a bright spot for Memphis as he added two assists to his two rejections in his first nine minutes of action on October 22, 2022.

Players selected in the second round of the NBA Draft understand that they need to do more than just score points to earn a role in a rotation. Caleb Houstan received the message. The 32nd overall pick by the Orlando Magic proves instantly that he’s not afraid to defend and do the dirty work, sticking to Bojan Bogdanović like glue on a drive to the rim before rejecting the Detroit Pistons forward’s layup attempt. Houston additionally grabbed three boards in the October 19, 2022 contest.

Donning a Los Angeles Lakers jersey for the first time since 2017, D’Angelo Russell celebrated the reunion the best possible way — with a win. Selected by the Lakers with the second pick in the 2015 NBA Draft, Russell returns with unfinished business as he grabs an inbounds pass in the corner and uses a shifty handle to hunt for space before pulling up and draining a foul line jumper. Even with no LeBron James on the court, the new look Los Angeles Lakers took care of business. Jarred Vanderbilt was a big reason why, as the fifth-year forward takes his new opportunity and runs with it as he puts himself in the right spot to catch an Austin Reaves pass in the paint and finish with a throwdown over Donte DiVincenzo. Vanderbilt made great use of his 17 minutes off the bench, converting 5 of 7 field goals for 12 points while also chipping in eight rebounds and four assists in his new squad’s 109-103 win over the Golden State Warriors on February 11, 2023.

He’s so good that he doesn’t even need his eyes to make spectacular plays. Such is life when you’re Giannis Antetokounmpo, who continues to make the impossible happen on a nightly basis. Returning from a two-game absence against the Atlanta Hawks, the Milwaukee Bucks superstar makes up for lost time by flicking a no-look over-the-shoulder dime to a waiting Bobby Portis Jr., who finishes the possession with a layup. It was another typical night at the office for the two-time MVP, who finished the November 14, 2022 game with 27 points, eight rebounds and four assists.

It took all of one game for Josh Hart to make his mark on the New York Knicks. Reunited with college teammate Jalen Brunson, Hart looks at home in the New York offense as Brunson passes out of a double team to Julius Randle, who quickly fires the ball out to Hart for a three-pointer that gives the Knicks a nine-point fourth quarter lead with less than two minutes to play. The sixth-year forward contributed 11 points, seven rebounds, four assists and four steals off the bench in helping the Knicks claim a 126-120 win over the Utah Jazz on February 11, 2023.

While he may have fallen just short of his first triple-double of the season, Julius Randle won’t forget this dunk anytime soon. Neither will the Toronto Raptors, who do their best to slow down the two-time All-Star but Randle proves to be determined as he drives into the paint with his right hand before taking flight and landing a thunderous left-handed slam while being blanketed by multiple Raptors defenders. Randle posted a fantastic all-around performance of 23 points, 19 rebounds and eight assists for the New York Knicks on January 22, 2023.

If at first you miss your shot, give it a try again at much closer range. Lauri Markkanen comes up short on a three-point attempt against the Sacramento Kings but is thankful for second chances as a teammate snares the offensive board and whips the ball back to a cutting Markkanen, who delivers a second time around with a gravity-defying slam over Domantas Sabonis. The Utah Jazz All-Star forward produced a game-high 36 points on 16 of 24 shooting while also collecting five rebounds on December 30, 2022.

Record a triple-double, win the game — it’s become that simple for Nikola Jokić and the Denver Nuggets. The New Orleans Pelicans are powerless to slow down the two-time reigning MVP as he chases down a loose ball and weaves his way through three defenders with a dazzlingly-deceptive drive before finishing with a layup. Jokić made 10 of his 14 shots for 26 points, 18 rebounds and 15 assists as the Nuggets improved to 16-0 on the season whenever he posts a triple-double, as Denver got by the Pelicans 122-113 on January 31, 2023.

Jamal Murray looks like his old self again, which is bad news for the rest of the league. Against the Los Angeles Lakers, the Denver point guard uses a pick from Nikola Jokić to gain access into the lane. Met by a wall of defenders, Murray wisely passes up the shot attempt and instead opts for an acrobatic dish to his MVP teammate, who punctuates the possession with a floater. Murray produced 13 points, four rebounds, six assists and two steals in helping Denver prevail 110-99 on October 26, 2022.

In year 15, Russell Westbrook can still turn any pass on the court into an assist. The Detroit Pistons learned that the hard way as Westbrook — inbounding far away from the basket — needed less than two seconds to whip a three-quarter court laser into the hands of Lonnie Walker IV, who buries the catch-and-shoot triple to beat the halftime buzzer. Ten of Westbrook’s game-high 12 assists came in the first half, as the nine-time All-Star added 10 points and five rebounds in the Los Angeles Lakers’ 128-121 victory on November 18, 2022.

The Dallas Mavericks rookie introduces himself to the New Orleans Pelicans in style, using his momentum to blow by Kira Lewis Jr. with his left hand into the lane before switching to his right and finishing with an up-and-under layup around Willy Hernangomez. Hardy matched his career-high with 15 points on 7 for 9 shooting while adding two steals in his squad’s 127-117 win on January 7, 2023.

Cameron Johnson commemorated the formation of the new-look Brooklyn Nets with a no-look pass. Acquired from the Phoenix Suns in a trade deadline deal, Johnson and his new mates display instant synergy — when Spencer Dinwiddie comes up with a steal and fires a pass to an in-transition Johnson, the fourth-year forward drops off a beauty of a dish to a trailing Dorian Finney-Smith for a powerful slam. Johnson tallied 12 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals in his Brooklyn debut against the Philadelphia 76ers on February 11, 2023.

Jalen Brunson’s handle is so shifty that even extremely athletic players have trouble keeping up. Jeremy Sochan puts in an admirable effort in trying to stick with the New York Knicks point guard, but Brunson’s bag of tricks proves to be too deep as he eludes the San Antonio Spurs rookie in a man-to-man matchup long enough to bury a mid-range jumper. Brunson erupted for a career-high 38 points on 17 of 27 shooting and the Knicks needed every one of them — along with seven rebounds and six assists — in the 117-114 nail-biting victory on January 4, 2023.

The game just looks easy when Cade Cunningham is playing with confidence. The first overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft looks to be in his comfort zone with a strong drive to the basket against the Atlanta Hawks, finishing with an underhanded high-arcing scoop shot off the glass in traffic. Cunningham scored 27 of his career-high 35 points in the first half while also chipping in nine rebounds and eight assists for the Detroit Pistons on October 28, 2022.

With the Golden State Warriors playing without Steph Curry and Klay Thompson, Patrick Baldwin Jr. paid homage to his Splash Brothers teammates. The rookie forward was called on for increased minutes for the shorthanded Warriors and delivered from downtown in his Top Shot debut, draining a catch-and-shoot triple off a dump off pass from Anthony Lamb. Eight of the 10 shots Baldwin Jr. attempted were from behind the arc, converting five of them for 17 points along with three rebounds against the Brooklyn Nets on December 21, 2022.

The three-time All-Star went off for 44 points on 17 of 28 shooting while also contributing eight rebounds, four assists and six steals in Phoenix’s 122-117 road victory on November 28, 2022, the Suns’ fifth consecutive win.

Ochai Agbaji relished the opportunity to show he can throw down with the best of them in his Top Shot debut. The Utah Jazz rookie guard gets a head start on the counterattack following a Memphis Grizzlies miss, receiving an outlet pass from Jordan Clarkson with only one defender standing between him and the basket. Agbaji doesn’t back down from the challenge, skying high and throwing down a highlight-reel jam. The 14th overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft is playing with extreme confidence, scoring 17 points on 7 of 12 shooting on February 15, 2023.

As a former number one overall pick, Markelle Fultz has the tools to do just about anything on a basketball court. Fultz crosses halfcourt and shifts into attack mode on a strong drive to the basket that ends with the Orlando Magic guard’s one-handed posterization of Precious Achiuwa. Fultz’s strong slam was part of a big night north of the border as he tallied 19 points, six rebounds, five assists and two blocks against the Toronto Raptors on February 14, 2023.

Crisp ball movement tends to yield promising results — it sure did for Norman Powell and the LA Clippers. The Clips swing the ball around the perimeter until it finds the veteran forward, who leaves two defenders in the dust before springboarding off both feet to hammer home an earth-shaking throwdown over Julius Randle. The highlight-reel slam was the loudest component of a huge night for Powell, who delivered 24 points, seven rebounds and three assists off the bench in his squad’s 134-128 overtime victory over the New York Knicks on February 4, 2023.

Haywood Highsmith and his shot dropped together. After defending a Boston Celtics three-point attempt, the Miami Heat forward uses his forward momentum to get himself into prime position on the counterattack in his Top Shot debut. When Gabe Vincent snares a defensive rebound, he looks up the floor to find Highsmith all alone and the third-year forward connects on the open triple despite a flying Celtics defender knocking him off his feet. Highsmith didn’t miss at all from downtown, connecting on all four of his treys for 15 points to go with 10 rebounds off the bench as the Heat knocked off the Celtics 98-95 on January 24, 2023.

No defender is safe from ending up on a highlight reel whenever Zach LaVine has the ball in his hands. The Chicago Bulls’ two-time All-Star puts the Utah Jazz on notice, first blowing by Malik Beasley before getting Udoka Azubuike to jump out of his shoes with a deceptive pump fake that becomes an uncontested layup. LaVine’s 20 points, six rebounds and five assists were too much for the Jazz to handle as the Bulls left Salt Lake City with a 114-107 victory on November 28, 2022.

If you’re only going to score one bucket in a game, best make it one everybody will remember. Tre Mann is up to the challenge against the Atlanta Hawks, with the Oklahoma City Thunder reserve guard taking advantage of a lazy inbounds pass as he picks it off and immediately goes aerial to throw down a powerful dunk over Onyeka Okongwu. The steal-and-slam was the highlight of a 12-minute run for Mann, who posted two points, two assists, one rebound and one steal on January 25, 2023.

The San Antonio Spurs may not have won the game, but Zach Collins certainly didn’t lose any confidence in the process. The 2017 lottery pick has one of the best performances of his career in a marathon double overtime contest against the Detroit Pistons, as Collins shows off his athleticism in a one-on-one battle against Isaiah Stewart with an agile spin move and layup. Collins scored a career-best 29 points on 11 of 16 shooting to go with 11 rebounds and three assists in the double overtime showdown on February 10, 2023.

Making his Top Shot debut, the Portland Trail Blazers’ second-year forward makes the smart play when confronted by two Washington Wizards defenders, hitting a cutting Josh Hart with a no-look pass through the back door for a layup that increases his squad’s lead to 11 with under a minute to play. Watford made a significant impact off the bench, posting 21 points on 9 of 12 shooting along with three rebounds and five assists in Portland’s 124-116 victory on February 3, 2023.

With his Memphis Grizzlies clinging to a one-point lead following a go-ahead Steven Adams tip-in with 16 seconds to play, Brooks is happy to play the role of defensive hero as he sticks with an elusive Darius Garland the whole way before rising up to block Garland’s three-point try at the buzzer. Brooks also scored eight points and grabbed three rebounds in his squad’s 115-114 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers on January 18, 2023, allowing Memphis to match the franchise’s longest winning streak at 11 games.

Mobley posted 19 points of 9 of 10 from the field to go with 13 rebounds, four assists and two blocks in Cleveland’s 107-96 triumph on December 2, 2022.

Riding a wave of confidence in the form of a six-game winning streak, RJ Barrett and the sizzling New York Knicks decided that lucky number seven sounded even better. Barrett takes on the Indiana Pacers defense all by himself, refusing to be denied as he crosses halfcourt and drives with determination down the heart of the lane before blowing by his initial defender and finishing with a powerful one-handed slam. Barrett’s 24 points and four rebounds were vital to the Knicks extending their streak in the 109-106 win on December 18, 2022.

With the outcome hanging in the balance, Dennis Schröder is the man for the job against the Miami Heat as the veteran point guard takes on all comers on a strong crunch-time drive before finishing with a layup over the fingertips of two defenders. The bucket gave the Lakers a four-point lead with 20 seconds to play and Schröder scored 14 of his season-high 32 points in the fourth quarter, including nine in the final 2:35. Schröder added four rebounds, two assists, four steals and four treys in his squad’s 112-109 victory on January 4, 2023.

Less than a week after dropping 41 on the Charlotte Hornets, the Houston Rockets’ second-year shooting guard is at it again when the Minnesota Timberwolves come to town. Green runs the floor with a sense of urgency before pulling up and draining a difficult step-back triple to beat the third quarter buzzer and give his squad a nine-point lead. Green was too much for the Timberwolves to handle, erupting for 42 points on 11 of 23 shooting to go with four rebounds, four assists and six three-pointers in Houston’s 119-114 win on January 23, 2023.
