When Wilson blows by the initial defender, Jones stands tall underneath the basket, timing her jump perfectly and using all of her 6-foot-6 frame to deny one of the league’s best players with authority. Sue Bird saved some of her best work for the final chapter of her Hall of Fame career. In her fifth-to-last WNBA game, the Seattle Storm cornerstone shows she’s still got plenty left in the tank, getting a defender to bite on a pump fake from the halfcourt logo. The rest is easy from there, as the wide-open Bird calmly sinks the triple, one of four makes in Seattle’s opening-round series against the Washington Mystics. Seeking to become the first repeat champions in two decades, Candace Parker and the Chicago Sky were seeking extra points anywhere they could be found. Trailing the Connecticut Sun 1-0 in a best-of-five semifinals series, the seven-time All-Star and All-WNBA First Team selection catches a pass from a teammate and buries a straightaway triple despite drawing a foul on the play. While the Sun would ultimately go on to win the series in five games, it wasn’t due to lackluster play from Parker, who helped the Sky even the series by posting 22 points, four rebounds, four assists and three blocks in an 85-77 victory on August 31, 2022.

In Sue Bird’s final WNBA game, Breanna Stewart made sure to send her legendary teammate into retirement with an unforgettable performance. Leave it to Kelsey Mitchell to make her defender touch earth. Fired up with the rock, the Indiana Fever guard fools not one but two Phoenix Mercury defenders with her enviable handle, making one hit the deck for good measure before slicing her way into the lane and calmly sinking a pull-up jumper from inside the elbow. Phoenix had trouble keeping up with Mitchell all day, as she poured in 14 of her game-high 21 points in the first half, adding three rebounds, five assists, a steal and four three-pointers, on June 29, 2022.

It’s never easy to say goodbye to a league legend, especially one with so much left in the tank. In her final regular season home contest, Sylvia Fowles shows she is still very much a frontcourt force to be reckoned with, displaying her notorious strength in the post by grabbing an entry pass and welcoming all defensive challengers. Despite encountering a double team with her back to the basket, the Minnesota Lynx star improvises, taking a couple dribbles before rising up for a challenging one-handed turnaround while fading away. The eight-time All-Star will retire as the league’s all-time leader in field-goal percentage, rebounds and double-doubles. Showing that good shots come to those who wait, Courtney Vandersloot confronts a double team following an inbounds pass, receives a bailout from a helpful teammate, then slides out behind the arc to calmly drain a high-arching triple to beat the horn. The Chicago Sky veteran contributed across the board against the Minnesota Lynx, posting 18 points, five rebounds, six assists, four three-pointers and a steal in the 88-85 victory on June 26, 2022.

Using a combination of handles, speed and toughness, Kahleah Copper does just that, grabbing a handoff atop the key before letting her basketball instincts take over. Perhaps prophesying that every bucket would matter in a matchup ultimately requiring two overtimes, Aerial Powers grabs an inbound pass before urgently racing up the floor. A blanket of three Phoenix Mercury defenders meets her on the other end, but the Minnesota Lynx forward still manages to bypass everyone standing in her way to bury a running three-pointer just in the nick of time. Victory always tastes a little bit sweeter with a milestone attached. Alyssa Thomas showcases her ability to fill the box score on both ends, first earning a steal thanks to her relentless aggression on defense before pushing the ball the other way in transition. With a 4-on-1 numbers advantage, the Connecticut Sun star displays her basketball intelligence by drawing the lone Minnesota Lynx defender toward her and finishing the play with a perfectly-timed dish to a driving teammate. Thomas’ versatile performance earned her the first triple-double of her career, as well as the first in franchise history, in the 94-84 win on July 22, 2022.

You don’t become the WNBA’s leading scorer without a relentless eye for the basketball, just ask Breanna Stewart. Sizing up an opportunity off a teammate’s shot attempt, Stewart immediately jars loose an opponent’s defensive rebound before positioning herself in the perfect spot behind the arc to receive a pass following the deflected loose ball. Stewart drains the triple, earning the points and steal thanks to her hustle en route to 25 points, eight rebounds, four assists, three steals and a block, helping the Storm prevail over the Dallas Wings 84-79 on June 12, 2022.

Not so fast, my friend! On a night when her New York Liberty squad set a franchise single-game scoring record, Natasha Howard was there to also ensure all windows and doors were deadbolted on the defensive end. When a Las Vegas Aces ball handler drops a pretty bounce pass to a cutting teammate in the paint, Howard is there waiting, standing tall and earning an emphatic one-handed swat. Howard’s lone rejection bookended an overall solid performance, contributing 18 points, six rebounds, three assists and a three-pointer in the Liberty’s 116-107 road triumph.

Hungry to put points on the board, the Dallas Wings guard showcases her slick handle, crossing over a helpless defender as she motors toward the lane while setting up the halfcourt offense. As the New York Liberty defense collapses inward, Ogunbowale absorbs contact from multiple defenders and somehow flicks a no-look pass over her shoulder to a wide-open teammate in the corner, who finishes by burying the trey. Ogunbowale wowed all game long in her team’s 81-71 victory on May 15, 2022, scoring a game-high 21 points, to go along with four assists, a rebound and a steal.

Locked in a tight road game against one of the league’s best teams, the Washington Mystics sure were glad to have Elena Delle Donne on their side. With her team clinging to a one-point fourth-quarter lead, Delle Donne plays the hero, receiving an entry pass despite three defenders flanking her. Even with her back to the basket, the two-time MVP and six-time All-Star shows no fear in taking on all comers, rising up for a turnaround fadeaway and providing some scoreboard cushion for her battling squad. It required an overtime period, but Delle Donne helped guide the Mystics to an 87-86 victory over the Las Vegas Aces on June 25, 2022, tallying 19 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, five blocks and a pair of three-pointers.

As one of the league’s most prominent two-way stars, A’ja Wilson is in the business of making the opposition look bad on both ends of the court — oftentimes on consecutive plays. First, Wilson denies an overmatched Los Angeles Sparks shooter with an unforgiving block before flipping a switch and gliding down the court alongside a driving teammate in transition. Grabbing a pass, the Las Vegas Aces cornerstone, takes one dribble and drains a foul line pull-up right in the face of a defender. The Las Vegas guard’s fingerprints were all over this contest, as she dished a game-high seven assists, along with five points, four rebounds and two steals in the Aces’ decisive 94-69 victory over the Indiana Fever on July 31, 2022.

Having star power on a roster is one thing; having synergy with great players all working together is next level. The Las Vegas Aces showcase their chemistry and teamwork, with Kelsey Plum right in the middle of the action — following a teammate’s steal on the defensive end, Plum quickly collects the ball and initiates the downhill attack. Plum threads the needle with a highlight-reel bounce pass through a wall of three Connecticut Sun defenders to hit a streaking teammate in stride for an easy two. Plum’s 18 points, four rebounds, seven assists and trio of three-pointers on May 31, 2022 propelled the Aces to their seventh straight victory — and best 10-game start in franchise history.

No, there’s nothing Diana Taurasi can’t do with a ball in her hands, and yes, she still surprises us with her ability to conjure up magic. Beginning behind the arc, the 10-time All-Star instantly fools the first defender out of her shoes with a deceptive head fake before putting the ball on the floor and tricking another with a highlight-reel behind-the-back dribble while muscling herself toward the basket. For her encore, the Phoenix Mercury legend confronts two more opponents at the rim, then flips a lightning-quick assist around the wall to a cutting, opportunistic teammate. The key to second-chance points hinges on determination, hustle and grit. Just ask Ariel Atkins, who catches a high pass behind the arc before driving into the lane with her left hand. Atkins has her layup attempt blocked at the rim by a Phoenix Mercury defender, but staying with the play, the Washington Mystics guard grabs her own miss and scores a hard-earned and-one layup. Showing off the limitless energy that’s become her calling card, Jefferson sneaks in at the last second to break up an errant Phoenix Mercury inbound pass attempt before capping the play with a silky smooth one-handed reverse layup to fire up her teammates. Try to throw a pass with Brittney Sykes in the area and you’re going to regret it. One of the WNBA’s most talented perimeter defenders, Sykes shows off both her IQ and instincts, deflecting a Seattle Storm pass attempt before finishing the play with a halfcourt heave that beats the buzzer. Quickly rotating over to defend a wide-open New York Liberty player at the rim, Magbegor expertly times her jump, denying a layup attempt with authority. The up-and-coming Seattle Storm big made quite the impact in the 81-72 win on June 19, 2022, with 10 points, five rebounds, two assists and a pair of blocks.

Get too distracted by how effortlessly Marine Johannès can score, and you might miss out on how capable of a passer she is. Finding one of her go-to pick-and-roll partners, Johannès unleashes a difficult, one-handed bounce pass through the Washington Mystics’ defense with pinpoint precision, setting up a teammate for a wide-open score. The New York Liberty guard proved impactful in a 77-65 win on June 16, 2022, divvying up seven assists, along with four points, four rebounds, a steal and a block.

When you draw as many double teams as Sabrina Ionescu does, the ability to thread the needle and set up open teammates becomes a must-have skill. Ogunbowale helped lead the charge with 16 points, six rebounds, four assists, one steal and a game-high three triples.

The bigger the moment, the more likely Natasha Cloud will rise to the occasion. With the halftime buzzer imminent, Cloud wastes no time getting to work, inbounding the ball to a teammate before immediately receiving a handoff behind the arc, taking one dribble and firing from deep just in the nick of time to tie the score heading into the locker room. Cloud was also clutch late, sinking a pair of fourth-quarter free throws with less than 25 seconds remaining to help the Washington Mystics prevail over the Atlanta Dream. Among the WNBA’s fiercest competitors, Sophie Cunningham knows plenty of ways to change the spectrum of a game. With the New York Liberty focused on defending a potential pick-and-roll, Cunningham eases into an unoccupied spot on the wing before calmly sinking a three-point bucket. Ramping her game to a new level since becoming a starter, Cunningham poured in 23 points — including 17 in the first quarter — on an efficient 10-of-15 shooting to go with five rebounds, an assist, a steal and three three-pointers in a hard-fought 84-81 Phoenix Mercury victory on July 7, 2022.

When a team is cold from outside, it pays to have a frontcourt star capable of taking over down low. On a night when her New York Liberty missed 25 three-pointers, Natasha Howard sensed a golden opportunity to step up.After catching a pass over the top, between three Washington Mystics defenders, Howard finesses her way around everyone for a tough finish off the glass. The Liberty outscored Washington by 20 in the paint thanks to Howard’s 27-point, nine-rebound effort in the 77-65 win on June 16, 2022.

Having elite court vision is a sure-fire way to establish a dominant transition attack. Following a rejection on the defensive end, Kahleah Copper scoops up a loose ball, takes one dribble, then lasers a lengthy outlet pass up the floor into the waiting hands of a teammate, who catches the assist in stride. Copper’s heads-up play was consistent throughout, tallying 15 points, six rebounds and four assists in the Chicago Sky’s 91-83 win over the Connecticut Sun on June 29, 2022.

When you can create your own shot in any scenario the way Jewell Loyd can, it’s shaping up to be a long night for the opposing defense. Loyd takes a handoff from a teammate on the left wing, moving through traffic to her right before switching hands with a slick behind-the-back dribble and step-back fadeaway jumper to fool a helpless Las Vegas Aces defender. Loyd was unstoppable all night, pouring in a game-high 24 points to go with two rebounds, four assists, a steal and four three-pointers while leading the Seattle Storm to an 88-78 triumph on June 29, 2022.

The key to becoming a deadeye shooter is being fearless no matter the situation, and Lexie Brown saves her biggest makes for the most clutch moments. With her Los Angeles Sparks clinging to a one point fourth-quarter lead, Brown pinballs around a screen and finds open real estate at the top of the key before calmly burying a three-pointer. A deep, productive bench is a critical advantage for any team, especially double-overtime. Not afraid to get to work in the extra frame, Minnesota Lynx reserve Jessica Shepard puts her strength on display, catching a pass in the post and beating her defender one-on-one with a pretty spin move while absorbing contact for an and-one. Shepard was a key to victory for her squad, chipping in 13 points, 12 rebounds, four assists and two steals in the 118-107 victory over the Phoenix Mercury on July 12, 2022.

With her motor constantly running, Diggins-Smith glides the length of the floor, using her downhill momentum to grab a pass before switching hands to convert a sleek reverse layup. Never shy about reaching deep into her bag of tricks, Las Vegas Aces star guard Kelsey Plum has an offensive skill set that leaves defenders with two choices: watch her score or stop her with a foul. Locked in a tight fourth-quarter battle against the Seattle Storm, Emma Meesseman saves her best for last, putting the ball on the floor to get to the basket, pump fakes a defender out of her shoes and then finishes the play with a slick reverse layup.
