Eleven days after posting a career-best 40 points, A’ja Wilson was thinking even bigger. Brittney Griner snapped the Phoenix Mercury out of a tough losing stretch with some signature fireworks. The nine-time All-Star got behind Los Angeles Sparks defender Azura Stevens in the paint and threw down the 25th dunk of her career — 18 have come in the regular season, with another two in the playoffs and five more in All-Star Games. Griner’s one-handed slam gave a much-needed lift to the Mercury and her game-high 29 points and 11 rebounds helped contribute to the squad’s 78-72 win on July 9, 2023.

Diamond Miller, the Minnesota Lynx’s top 2023 draft pick, has looked more polished veteran than rookie in her first professional season. Scooping up a loose ball to avoid a Lynx turnover against the Phoenix Mercury, Miller showed off her footwork and athleticism in the paint, weaving around three defenders to finish with an underhand layup. Miller posted a game-high 25 points on 9 of 15 shooting and added six rebounds and five steals in an 86-76 victory on July 1, 2023 — her squad’s seventh win in 10 games following an 0-6 start to the season.

Kahleah Copper scored her squad’s final eight points — including the two that mattered most. The Chicago Sky’s three-time All-Star was money in crunch time against the Los Angeles Sparks as she grabbed a pass from Marina Mabrey atop the key before putting her defender on her backside with a strong drive to the rim that culminated in a go-ahead layup with 22 seconds remaining. Even with one hand, there is no slowing down the Ezi Magbegor breakout campaign. The Seattle Storm center — and first-time All-Star in 2023— continued to make things look effortless against the Phoenix Mercury as she plucked a Mercedes Russell misfire from the air and smoothly deposited a putback into the basket over Diana Taurasi using only her right hand. Magbegor, who is averaging career-best marks in nearly every statistical category in her fourth WNBA season, shot 7 for 10 for 19 points while mixing in seven rebounds and four assists in her team’s 97-91 triumph on August 5, 2023.

Lexie Hull’s handles gave the Dallas Wings defense the spins. With Arike Ogunbowale glued to Hull’s hip, the Indiana Fever guard had to get creative to shake her defender as she drove from the perimeter to the elbow before leaving Ogunbowale in the dust with a perfectly-executed spin move that led to a layup. With her hot-shooting Chicago Sky teammates combining for 14 3-pointers, Elizabeth Williams was more than happy to do the dirty work. The nine-year veteran put her flawless defensive anticipation on display against the Dallas Wings as she thwarted Arike Ogunbowale’s driving layup attempt by sliding over from the low block to land an authoritative rejection that careened out of bounds. Williams made her only field-goal attempt for two points while also posting three rebounds, five assists and two blocks in Chicago’s 104-89 victory on August 4, 2023.

Li Meng’s first touch of the game was a sign of good things to come for the Washington Mystics rookie. Less than two minutes into a battle against the Phoenix Mercury, Meng caught a pass behind the arc from Elena Delle Donne and immediately let it fly with a veteran’s poise. Seeing the ball hit the bottom of the net filled Meng with confidence, with the Mystics scoring the game’s first nine points and never letting up. Meng shot 5 of 12 from the field — including a solid 4 of 9 showing from downtown — for a season-high 14 points in Washington’s 88-69 victory on June 16, 2023.

The Connecticut Sun’s defense was no match for Lindsay Allen’s court vision. The Minnesota Lynx guard pushed the ball up the floor with purpose, stopping on a dime at the free-throw line before fitting a crisp pass in a tight window to a cutting Tiffany Mitchell in transition. Allen made the most of her 28-minute run off the bench, divvying up eight points, three rebounds and a game-high seven assists on June 22, 2023.

Breanna Stewart’s highly-anticipated return to the Pacific Northwest went swimmingly. The former Seattle Storm star — who made four All-Star appearances, won two titles, two Finals MVP awards and the 2018 WNBA MVP over the course of six accomplished seasons — came back for the first time as a member of the New York Liberty and did not take it easy on her old squad after some pregame hugs. Stewart dazzled as she brought the ball up the court before hitting her defender with a crossover dribble and finishing with a foul-line runner while drawing a foul. Following 12 years and four All-Star selections with the Chicago Sky, Courtney Vandersloot is right at home with her new squad. Now one season into her tenure with New York Liberty, Vandersloot continued to ingratiate herself with some late-game heroics. Down a pair against the Washington Mystics, Vandersloot ensured an extra session would be necessary, executing a perfectly-timed, fullcourt give-and-go with teammate Kayla Thornton for a game-tying bucket. Vandersloot — an All-Star for the fifth time in her career — had 11 points, seven rebounds and six assists in the exciting 89-88 overtime win on June 25, 2023.

Olivia Nelson-Ododa’s first career double-double paired perfectly with a dominant showing by the Connecticut Sun. Nelson-Ododa put her strength in the low post on display against the Indiana Fever as she went right to work on Emma Cannon, embracing contact in the paint and finishing with a layup. The Connecticut reserve forward posted 10 points, 10 rebounds and four assists in a season-high 28 minutes as her squad cruised to an 88-72 victory on August 4, 2023.

Sabrina Ionescu took a minute to get cooking but ended her 2023 regular season campaign in record-setting fashion. The two-time New York Liberty All-Star missed all eight of her shots in the first half before catching fire after the break, finding an open spot in the corner and connecting on a pure 3-pointer off a heads-up dish from Courtney Vandersloot. The shot was Ionescu’s 122nd triple of the season, breaking Diana Taurasi’s single-season record that had stood since 2006. Nneka Ogwumike did not let falling to the floor prevent her from making a play. The longtime Los Angeles Sparks forward — now in her 12th season with the franchise — initially looked to post up a pair of Washington Mystics defenders before losing her footing in the paint. As she tumbled, the eight-time All-Star had the presence of mind to skip a bounce pass over to Karlie Samuelson, who knocked down a contested 3-pointer. Ogwumike posted team-highs of 20 points and 10 rebounds while also mixing in five assists and two blocks in her squad’s 91-83 road win on August 6, 2023.

When the Atlanta Dream needed multiple clutch plays made in crunch time, they knew just who to call. First-time All-Star Allisha Gray took over down the stretch against the Washington Mystics, grabbing an inbound pass with under a minute to play, beating her defender with a strong left-handed drive and finishing with a critical and-1 layup. The three-point play increased Atlanta’s lead from two points to five, with Gray scoring 13 of her team-high 26 in the final period. She added five rebounds and four assists in her squad’s 94-89 victory on June 30, 2023.

Diana Taurasi didn’t need to look very far — or at all — to pick up the Phoenix Mercury’s first victory of the 2023 season. The WNBA’s all-time leading scorer ran the pick-and-roll with star teammate Brittney Griner, using Griner’s 6-foot-9 frame for cover before drawing in a pair of Minnesota Lynx defenders and dropping off a beauty of a no-look dish to the cutting center for a possession-capping layup. Taurasi showed that she remains one of the league’s most offensively productive players in her 19th season, compiling 23 points, 10 assists and four 3-pointers to help Phoenix prevail 90-81 on May 25, 2023.

DeWanna Bonner’s 14th WNBA season has turned into one of her best. After helping guide her Connecticut Sun to an appearance in the WNBA Finals in 2022, the five-time All-Star has returned even stronger a year later. With the host Seattle Storm hanging within striking distance in the game’s final minute, Bonner left little to doubt as she buried a dagger 3-pointer over Jordan Horston with 26 seconds remaining. Bonner tallied 20 points, six rebounds and three assists in the 85-79 win on June 20, 2023, moving into 10th place on the league’s all-time scoring list in the process.

It took Jackie Young and the Las Vegas Aces all of 26 games to clinch the first 2023 postseason berth. The two-time All-Star and her defending-champion teammates ran their win streak to eight games against the Atlanta Dream as Young made her defender hit the deck with some slick handles along the sideline. With nothing but open space in front of her, Young took her time and coolly buried a stepback 3-pointer for three of her game-high 24 points. She also mixed in four steals and triples apiece as the Aces secured a 93-72 win on August 1, 2023 to become the first team since 1998 to start a season 24-2, clinching a playoff spot with more than five weeks remaining in the regular season.

Jewell Loyd commemorated her brand new multi-year contract extension with a fresh WNBA scoring record. The five-time Seattle Storm All-Star added scoring champion to her impressive resume, as her first-quarter stepback corner three against the Los Angeles Sparks established a new league record for most points in a single season. Loyd finished the contest with 28 points — her 21st game this season with at least 25, six more than any other player — finishing the 2023 campaign with 939 points. Loyd led the league in scoring for the first time at 24.6 points per game, and also mixed in three rebounds, four assists and four treys against the Sparks in the regular-season finale on September 10, 2023.

The league-leading Las Vegas Aces were no match for Elena Delle Donne during a tide-turning second half. The seven-time Washington Mystics All-Star did not back down a bit when the Aces came to town as Delle Donne caught a pass from Brittney Sykes behind the 3-point arc before taking one dribble, spinning around Kelsey Plum and sinking a 15-footer with 2:24 remaining in the fourth quarter. The shot gave Washington an 11-point lead, and the Mystics outscored the reigning champions by 19 during a dominant second-half run. Delle Donne led the way with a team-high 21 points — 13 in the second half — and seven rebounds in the impressive 78-62 Washington victory on August 26, 2023.

If you don’t think you can accomplish much in five seconds, Kayla McBride would like a word. The three-time All-Star was cool under pressure in the closing seconds of the first half against the Washington Mystics, intercepting a backcourt pass and draining a pull-up jumper from just inside the arc as time expired. McBride’s exciting shot pulled the Minnesota Lynx to within two points at the break, and the club rallied to win behind her strong game of 15 points, three rebounds, two assists and three steals on July 26, 2023.

Of all the things the Las Vegas Aces have accomplished over the past two seasons, a triple-double was not one of them — until now. In fact, Chelsea Gray’s August 17, 2023 milestone was the first such feat in the history of a franchise that dates back to 1997. The five-time All-Star put forth a dominant effort against the New York Liberty as she drove strongly to her right before connecting on a foul line pull-up for two of her team-high 22 points. Gray added 11 rebounds, 11 assists and three steals as the Aces secured an 88-75 victory.

Even when the possession is over, Arike Ogunbowale keeps fighting. The Dallas Wings guard’s tenacity was rewarded after a Seattle Storm defensive rebound as she first dislodged the ball from the grasp of Gabby Williams before hitting the hardwood to grapple with Mercedes Russell for control of a loose ball. The three-time Dallas All-Star concluded the hustle sequence by winning the battle with Russell and bouncing a pass to a cutting Teaira McCowan for two hard-earned points. Ogunbowale was productive on both ends, tallying a team-high 27 points and five 3-pointers to go with three rebounds, four assists and four steals in her team’s 76-65 road win on August 2, 2023.

With a nudge from Brittney Sykes, the Washington Mystics stamped their ticket to the 2023 postseason with a little extra momentum. In a late-season game against the New York Liberty deadlocked at 88 with less than a second to play, Sykes eschewed overtime for a game-winning buzzer beater when she corralled an inbound lob from Natasha Cloud and smoothly flicked in the clutch shot while suspended in midair. Sykes’ heroics prevented the Liberty from claiming the postseason’s top seed and set up a showdown between the two squads after Washington’s thrilling 90-88 victory on September 10, 2023. Sykes produced a team-high 20 points, seven rebounds and six assists.

Cheyenne Parker was a first-time All-Star in her ninth season in 2023 and it’s becoming easy to see why. The veteran Atlanta Dream forward flipped defense into offense against the Chicago Sky when her length forced Courtney Williams into a turnover, allowing Parker to traverse the length of the floor to beat the defense for a transition layup. Parker posted a career-best 29 points on 10 of 20 shooting to go with seven rebounds, three assists and two blocks in a 78-67 Atlanta victory on August 18, 2023.

Nobody needed to remind Erica Wheeler that sharing is caring. The Indiana Fever guard put her selflessness on display against the Minnesota Lynx as she beat her defender off the dribble on a drive into the paint, successfully baiting the defense before dropping off a dime to a backdoor-cutting NaLyssa Smith. Wheeler shot 6 of 9 from the field for 17 points and added 10 assists, as her double-double helped the Fever cruise to a 91-73 victory on August 10, 2023.

Work hard defensively and the rewards will come sooner than you think. Atlanta Dream reserve guard AD Durr’s relentless style of play was on display against the Phoenix Mercury as they picked off a pass in the backcourt and set up a quick give-and-go for a high-arcing 3-pointer from the corner. Durr’s triple gave Atlanta a 21-point fourth-quarter lead and their 12 points helped the Dream cruise to a 78-65 win in the July 25, 2023 contest.

Behind the 3-point arc was the place to be for Sophie Cunningham. After a missed Washington Mystics triple, the Phoenix Mercury guard showed her opponent how it was done as she received an outlet pass from Sug Sutton and immediately fired from long range while drawing a foul. Cunningham shot 4 for 6 in the contest — all from downtown — for 14 points while also adding four assists and two steals in a 91-72 Mercury triumph on August 8, 2023.

A few lapses in judgment seven seconds apart reminded the Chicago Sky just how explosive Sami Whitcomb is from long range. The Seattle Storm guard first caught the Chicago defense napping, finding an open spot in the corner to bury a spot-up 3-pointer. Not satisfied with just one triple, a determined and aggressive Whitcomb picked Courtney Williams’ pocket on the ensuing inbound pass, retreated back to the perimeter and pulled the trigger again on another quick trey to give her squad a quick six points. Whitcomb posted 19 points, four rebounds, four assists, three steals and five 3-pointers on August 27, 2023.

On a night where she got to the foul line a season-high 14 times, Marina Mabrey was hunting contact. The Chicago Sky guard showcased a smooth low-post presence against the Dallas Wings when she took a dump-off in the paint that instantly turned into an and-1 turnaround jumper. Mabrey made 13 free throws in the contest while also connecting on 8 of her 14 field goals for a game-high 32 points and grabbing five rebounds in Chicago’s 104-96 triumph on August 6, 2023.

No matter what they did against the Indiana Fever, Layshia Clarendon had the magic touch. The Los Angeles Sparks guard got their primary defender to bite on a pump fake before embarking on a drive into the paint. Encountering Victoria Vivians, the quick-thinking Clarendon wrapped a pass around the second line of defense into the waiting hands of Nneka Ogwumike for a well-deserved layup. Clarendon shot 6 for 8 from the field — including a perfect 3 for 3 from downtown — for 17 points to pair with three rebounds and five assists in Los Angeles’ 87-80 win on August 8, 2023.

In the midst of an eight-game losing streak, Los Angeles Sparks guard Jordin Canada was happy to play the role of hero when her team badly needed a pick-me-up. With the Sparks down two in the closing seconds, Canada took a few dribbles right at Erica Wheeler before sinking the game-winning 3-pointer with 3.2 seconds remaining. The two-time champion posted 20 points, four rebounds, 10 assists and three steals in the thrilling 79-78 victory over the Indiana Fever on July 25, 2023.

Now in her 10th WNBA season, Dallas Wings forward Natasha Howard has won three championships and been named an All-Star twice, but had never had a triple-double to her name — until now. Howard filled up the box score against the Chicago Sky, grabbing a pass in the paint before hitting Alanna Smith with some elusive footwork as she spun her way into an impressive layup. Howard tallied 28 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists on August 4, 2023 for the third triple-double in franchise history.
