Embroiled in a tight, fourth-quarter battle between division rivals, Lively II battles for position on the glass with fellow rookie Victor Wembanyama, deflects the ball to a teammate, then loops back around to the hoop to throw down a putback slam off a miss. Lively II recorded a double-double in his first game as a pro, dropping 16 points on 7-of-8 shooting and added 10 boards in the October 25, 2023 win.

Sizing up a gap in the New Orleans Pelicans defense, Golden State Warriors rookie Brandin Podziemski wastes no time capitalizing, attacking his man off the dribble, leaving him in the dust on a crossover, then euro stepping into a finger roll. Podziemski finished with five points and eight boards in his October 30, 2023 debut.

Lauded as an NBA three-point threat the minute his name was called in the draft, Gradey Dick commands respect beyond the arc. After shuffling into position behind the three-point line in a half-court set, Dick draws the attention of the defense and promptly kicks the ball back to a wide-open teammate for three. The dime – Dick’s first career assist – came in a Toronto Raptors victory on October 25, 2023.

Spreading the defense in his first NBA contest, Hawkins bides his time beyond the arc before catching a pass and immediately firing up a deep triple. The first career basket of Hawkins’ career fell swiftly through the net and he added two assists in the October 25, 2023 victory.

Being the NBA’s youngest player hasn’t stopped GG Jackson from shooting with the poise and confidence of a seasoned veteran. Calm and collected as his teammates’ pick-and-roll unfolds, Jackson takes full advantage, rising from the left corner to drain a 3-point bucket, the first of his NBA career. Unsatisfied with just one bucket, the Memphis Grizzlies’ rookie forward kept the highlights flowing in the loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder on December 18, 2023, sparking the bench with eight points, two 3-pointers and a block in just 12 minutes of play.

Test Bilal Coulibaly’s defensive range if you want but it’s not recommended. Keeping track of his own check over the course of an Indiana Pacers possession, Coulibaly catches his man in the middle of a backdoor cut, then trails the attempt and spikes it out of bounds. It was one of three blocks in the October 25, 2023 debut for the Washington Wizards rookie, who also chipped in three points, four boards and three assists.

An imposing big with a penchant for flying above the rim, Trayce Jackson-Davis adds yet another offensive option for the Golden State Warriors. After setting a formidable screen for teammate Chris Paul beyond the arc in his second NBA contest, Jackson-Davis rolls hard into the paint, catches a pass and soars for a two-handed flush. Unfazed after a defender gets his hand on a pass, Milwaukee Bucks rookie Andre Jackson Jr. returns the favor with an interception of his own, then finds a teammate in the corner for the first assist of his NBA career. Rookie Duop Reath flashes brilliance on both ends of the floor in his first career game, connecting on a long range trey and following suit with an emphatic rejection on the other end on the very next possession. The freshman scored 11 points and logged 3 boards and 3 assists in this loss on the road against the Los Angeles Lakers on November 12, 2023.

Putting himself on the radar with a strong Summer League performance, Leonard Miller continues to be efficient in every opportunity with the Minnesota Timberwolves. Providing his teammate with a needed outlet, Miller cuts into the lane before calmly tossing in a reverse layup, the first points of his young NBA career. The second-rounder made the most of limited action against the Memphis Grizzlies, producing two points, two rebounds and an assist in just two minutes, supplying highlights in the win on November 26, 2023.

With a reputation of doing a bit of everything to help his team in the win column, it’s no surprise that Olivier-Maxence Prosper was willing to battle for his first NBA basket. The Dallas Mavericks rookie finished the November 12, 2023 contest with four points.

Facing an opportunity in his NBA debut, Orlando Magic rookie Jett Howard swings the basketball into the corner for his first career assist. Howard, the son of 19-year veteran Juwan Howard, officially arrived as a second generation hooper on October 25, 2023.

With an opportunity to take a defender one-on-one in his second NBA contest, Charlotte Hornets rookie Nick Smith Jr. lunges into the paint then spins into a pull-up jumper for the first points of his career. After allowing his teammates to do their part in stealing the Milwaukee Bucks’ lead in the final minute, Spencer Dinwiddie took on the challenge of checking the final defensive box by himself. Testing his versatility in one of the last places a defender wants to be —  guarding Damian Lillard with the game on the line —  Dinwiddie holds his own, mimicking the eight-time All-Star’s dribbles closely enough to stay tightly attached. Timing his jump perfectly, Dinwiddie extends before sending the potential game-winner in the opposite direction, drawing the delight of the crowd. The Los Angeles Lakers’ new arrival mastered the intangibles in the win on March 8, 2024, making his presence felt across the board with five points, three assists, one steal, two blocks, and one 3-pointer.

Strong finishes around the basket helped make Brooklyn Nets forward Noah Clowney a first round pick in the 2023 NBA Draft. It’s no surprise that Clowney’s first bucket in the NBA came on a flush. Given the chance to accomplish the inevitable after a pindown, pick-and-roll combination opens a reasonable path for a right-side drive, the smooth-scoring guard attacks with vigor, hanging an acrobatic layup over the outstretched arms of a Miami Heat defender. Undeterred after the shot misses, Freeman-Liberty corrals the rebound in one motion before tossing in his first-ever NBA score. Among the many highlights of the Toronto Raptors’ wire-to-wire win on January 17, 2024, Freeman-Liberty added two points and a rebound in just two minutes of play.

A forgotten man among the Portland Trail Blazers’ new look 2023-24 roster, it’s only fitting that Kris Murray’s first-ever NBA score came with the defense’s eyes elsewhere. With all attention focused on his teammate’s dazzling dribble display, Murray mixes brains and brawn, sneaking through the backdoor with a cut before finishing with an in-traffic jam. In the milestone game, Murray tallied five points, two rebounds and three assists in a loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers on November 15, 2023.
