The future is now for Paolo Banchero and the Orlando Magic. With one of the strongest offensive rookie campaigns in the last decade, Banchero showed why he was worthy of the number one draft pick all season long. A disruptor on both ends of the court against the Indiana Pacers, Banchero first cut off a passing lane by intercepting the ball before running a 2-on-1 break with Franz Wagner, one of two top-10 Orlando picks from 2021. Banchero tallied a team-high 23 points — along with three rebounds, four assists and two steals — in leading the Magic to a 126-120 win on January 25, 2023. A First Team All-Rookie selection, Banchero averaged 20.0 points, 6.9 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game to become Orlando’s first Rookie of the Year recipient since the 2000-01 season.

The 22nd overall pick in the draft was a force on both ends, tallying 17 points on 8 of 10 shooting while collecting a team-high 14 rebounds and seven blocks in Utah’s exciting 131-128 victory on February 1, 2023. Kessler was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team after averaging 9.2 points, 8.4 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game in 2022-23.

Bennedict Mathurin has been a walking highlight reel since the moment he stepped on an NBA court. One of the most offensively-gifted members of his class, the sixth pick in the draft took advantage of a Phoenix Suns turnover when he caught an outlet pass and ran the floor with nothing but open space between himself and the basket. The Indiana Pacers rookie hammered home a majestic windmill slam for two of his team-high 22 points on 7 of 15 shooting while grabbing three rebounds off the bench on February 10, 2023. Mathurin was a First Team All-Rookie selection after averaging 16.7 points per game, the second-highest rookie total during the 2022-23 campaign.

As his sterling rookie season approached its end, Jalen Williams found himself mentioned alongside Oklahoma City Thunder royalty. The Thunder made Williams the 12th pick in the draft for occasions just like this as he found himself at the right place at the right time when he collected Josh Giddey’s miss and beat the buzzer with a game-winning putback layup. The thrilling conclusion was part of an enormous night for Williams, who tallied a game-high 27 points alongside eight rebounds and six assists to join Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook as the only rookies in franchise history to post a 25-5-5 game in a 107-106 victory on March 29, 2023. Williams averaged 14.1 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.4 steals per game to earn a spot on the NBA All-Rookie First Team.

Jaden Ivey’s NBA learning curve hasn’t been too steep at all. The Detroit Pistons point guard’s soaring confidence reached similar heights as his body against the Brooklyn Nets when Ivey hit the defense with a drive into the paint with his left hand before taking flight and throwing down a thunderous slam with his right. The fifth overall pick tallied 19 points on 7 of 11 shooting and grabbed four rebounds on December 18, 2022. Ivey finished his inaugural season as the third highest-scoring rookie of the 2022 draft class at 16.3 points per game while leading the pack with 5.2 assists per contest, earning him a selection to the All-Rookie Second Team.

Catch Jeremy Sochan if you can — the Memphis Grizzlies sure could not. The San Antonio Spurs rookie forward was dripping with confidence when he caught a pass from Tre Jones and pondered a 3-pointer before pivoting to a lightning-quick head fake that kept the defense on its heels. Sochan finished with an emphatic one-handed slam, and the ninth overall pick continued to serve as a welcome addition to a young Spurs squad, ending his productive night with 11 points, three rebounds, five assists and two steals on January 11, 2023. Sochan was named a member of the All-Rookie Second Team after finishing his first season with 11.0 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.5 assists per contest.

Running the pick-and-roll with LeBron James sometimes appears so easy that it might as well be a cheat code. The 19-time All-Star shares the wealth at home against the Washington Wizards, bringing the ball across halfcourt before gaining access to the lane courtesy of a helpful screen. James baits the defense into focusing on him, but instead of taking the shot himself he drops off a smooth between-the-legs bounce pass to a cutting Thomas Bryant for a two-handed throwdown. James scored a game-high 33 points while adding seven rebounds and nine assists in the Los Angeles Lakers’ 119-117 victory on December 18, 2022.

Trailing by three points with 1.3 seconds remaining in regulation, Matt Ryan was subbed into the game with one objective — tie the ballgame. Mission accomplished for the Los Angeles Lakers newcomer. Off a perfectly-executed inbound pass from Austin Reaves, the sharpshooting Ryan, in his Top Shot debut, has just enough time to set his feet and force overtime with a corner three-pointer directly in front of the Lakers’ bench. Ryan played a critical role for the Lakers in just his sixth career game, chipping in 11 points, two rebounds, an assist and three triples in a much-needed 120-117 win over the New Orleans Pelicans on November 2, 2022.

Ja Morant is a man of many talents — including eyes in the back of his head levels of anticipation. It does not matter that the Memphis Grizzlies star has his back turned to the play with the New Orleans Pelicans attempting a frontcourt inbounds pass, as Morant times his turn perfectly and plucks a steal from midair. Morant races the other way and gets by Larry Nance Jr. with a dazzling behind-the-back dribble before finishing with an athletic finger roll. While the Pelicans won the game, the two-time All-Star finished with a game-high 36 points to go with eight rebounds, four assists and three steals on November 15, 2022.

New season, same old Damian Lillard. The six-time All-Star is already in midseason form in the early stages of his 11th season with the Portland Trail Blazers, breaking the hearts of opposing teams thanks to his impeccably clutch shooting. Against the high-powered Phoenix Suns, Lillard does what he does best, using a dizzying array of dribbles as he hunts for his shot. Multiple defenders give chase to no avail, as Lillard unleashes a 20-footer with a high degree of difficulty that finds its home in the bottom of the net. It was the 41st time in Lillard’s career that he exploded for 40 or more in a game, extinguishing the Suns with 41 points, seven rebounds and three assists in Portland’s 113-111 overtime victory on October 21, 2022.

He’s so good that he doesn’t even need his eyes to make spectacular plays. Such is life when you’re Giannis Antetokounmpo, who continues to make the impossible happen on a nightly basis. Returning from a two-game absence against the Atlanta Hawks, the Milwaukee Bucks superstar makes up for lost time by flicking a no-look over-the-shoulder dime to a waiting Bobby Portis Jr., who finishes the possession with a layup. It was another typical night at the office for the two-time MVP, who finished the November 14, 2022 game with 27 points, eight rebounds and four assists.

Fresh off achieving a national championship in college, Christian Braun has brought an unselfish, winning style of basketball with him to the Denver Nuggets. Against the Utah Jazz, the rookie shows he’s willing to do whatever it takes to secure a victory, fearlessly stepping in front of Malik Beasley to turn a wide-open dunk into a ferocious rejection. Braun continued to make an impact off the Nuggets bench, chipping in 10 points, six rebounds, an assist and a block in Denver’s 117-101 triumph on October 28, 2022.

In just his sixth professional game, Mark Williams gave the Charlotte Hornets an exciting glimpse into their future. Making his Top Shot debut, the 15th overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft sends a Josh Giddey shot into the crowd with a merciless rejection at the rim. Williams shot a sparkling 7-for-7 for a career-high 17 points and 13 rebounds, along with two assists, two steals and two blocks in 21 productive minutes off the bench in his squad’s 121–113 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder on December 29, 2022.

Anthony Edwards makes magic happen at both ends for the Minnesota Timberwolves, first recording an unforgiving block on the Miami Heat’s Max Strus before quickly finding the ball back in his hands while leading the transition attack. The first-overall selection of the 2020 NBA Draft again comes face-to-face with Strus, breaking him down off the dribble atop the key before launching a shifty stepback triple that’s all net. Edwards posted 22 points, seven rebounds, four assists, four steals and four three-pointers in his squad’s 105-101 victory on November 21, 2022.

Donovan Mitchell’s honeymoon with the Cleveland Cavaliers continued against the Los Angeles Lakers. Taking advantage of a favorable one-on-one matchup with Austin Reaves, Mitchell hits his defender with some slick dribbles before suddenly pulling up for a stepback triple that helps the Cavs pull away late in the fourth quarter. Mitchell logged his second 40-point performance of the season, posting 43 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals in Cleveland’s 116-102 triumph on December 6, 2022.

Never underestimate James Harden’s ability to come up with creative new ways of making plays for his Philadelphia 76ers teammates. Back in Houston on the court he called home for parts of nine seasons, the 2018 MVP shifts into facilitator mode when he whips a low-to-the-ground bounce pass to a cutting Shake Milton, who finishes the possession with an easy layup. The 10-time All-Star managed 21 points, four rebounds, seven assists, two steals and four triples in Philly’s overtime battle against the Houston Rockets on December 5, 2022.

Sleep on Julius Randle’s outside game if you want but you might get burned. The New York Knicks forward shows the Minnesota Timberwolves that his perimeter game has the ability to deal serious damage, first putting his defender on skates before confidently sticking a step-back three-pointer. It was far from a fluke occurrence, as Randle connected on eight of his 13 attempts from beyond the arc, burying the Timberwolves with a game-high 31 points to go with eight rebounds and three assists in New York’s 120-107 road win on November 7, 2022.

One year after his breakout campaign, Jordan Poole continues to evolve offensively. Pressed into starting duty for a resting Klay Thompson, the fourth-year guard keeps the Golden State Warriors offense humming with a strong drive into the paint before dropping off a beauty of a behind-the-back no-look pass to a cutting Jonathan Kuminga. Poole’s 21 points, two rebounds, five assists and five three-pointers helped deliver the Warriors a 120-101 win over the Houston Rockets on December 3, 2022.

If you want to end up in the win column, don’t let Kyrie Irving and the Brooklyn Nets get hot. Looking for their fifth win in six games, the seven-time All-Star drives the ball up the floor with a head of steam, faking a pass to Joe Harris on the wing before dropping in a high-arcing floater over his defender’s fingertips. Irving’s game-high 33 points on 14 of 24 shooting — along with five rebounds, nine assists and four blocks — were too much for the Charlotte Hornets to handle as the Nets claimed a 122-116 victory on December 7, 2022.

When Klay Thompson’s on a heater, let him cook. The Golden State Warriors are happy to oblige as a vintage lights-out shooting performance from Thompson was just what they needed to snap an eight-game road losing skid to open the season. Against the Houston Rockets, the five-time All-Star grabs a pass from Steph Curry and lets it fly — one of his 10 made three-pointers in 13 attempts. Thompson exploded for a season-high 41 points on 14-for-23 shooting while adding four rebounds, three assists and two steals in Golden State’s 127-120 win on November 20, 2022.

Almost a quarter of the way into the 2022-23 season, one thing has become clear — if Jericho Sims is on the court, he’s probably going to dunk on you. The New York Knicks’ reserve center continues to be his squad’s resident alley-oop recipient, this time against the Utah Jazz as he gets teed up for a perfectly-executed lob from Immanuel Quickley. The second-year big man was strong in 25 productive minutes, making 5-of-7 field-goal attempts for 11 points, while adding 13 rebounds, two assists and a steal in the Knicks’ 118-111 road win on November 15, 2022.

In year 15, Russell Westbrook can still turn any pass on the court into an assist. The Detroit Pistons learned that the hard way as Westbrook — inbounding far away from the basket — needed less than two seconds to whip a three-quarter court laser into the hands of Lonnie Walker IV, who buries the catch-and-shoot triple to beat the halftime buzzer. Ten of Westbrook’s game-high 12 assists came in the first half, as the nine-time All-Star added 10 points and five rebounds in the Los Angeles Lakers’ 128-121 victory on November 18, 2022.

Jamal Murray looks like his old self again, which is bad news for the rest of the league. Against the Los Angeles Lakers, the Denver point guard uses a pick from Nikola Jokić to gain access into the lane. Met by a wall of defenders, Murray wisely passes up the shot attempt and instead opts for an acrobatic dish to his MVP teammate, who punctuates the possession with a floater. Murray produced 13 points, four rebounds, six assists and two steals in helping Denver prevail 110-99 on October 26, 2022.

Now that’s how you announce your presence to the rest of the league. A year after averaging just three points per game in less than eight minutes a night, Nick Richards has burst on to the scene for the Charlotte Hornets in the early stages of the 2022-23 season. After erupting for 19 points and 10 rebounds in the season opener, the reserve center one-ups himself against the Atlanta Hawks. Executing a flawless pick-and-roll with fellow reserve James Bouknight, Richards takes a bounce pass from his teammate and rises up for an emphatic one-handed slam. It was a perfect game for Richards, who made all nine of his field goal attempts in a 20-point, 11-rebound, two-block effort in 20 efficient minutes in Charlotte’s 126-109 win on October 23, 2022.

Eager to help out a Los Angeles Lakers team hungry for a victory early in the season, free agent acquisition Lonnie Walker IV knew just how to deliver. Getting out in space against the New Orleans Pelicans thanks to an outlet pass from LeBron James, Walker IV rewards the Lakers’ faith by taking flight and throwing down a vicious one-hand slam over Jose Alvarado. Walker IV deposited 28 points, grabbed three rebounds and buried five triples in his new team’s thrilling 120-117 overtime triumph on November 2, 2022.

After taking the G League by storm with his explosive scoring prowess, Jaden Hardy was ready for the big stage. The Dallas Mavericks rookie introduces himself to the New Orleans Pelicans in style, using his momentum to blow by Kira Lewis Jr. with his left hand into the lane before switching to his right and finishing with an up-and-under layup around Willy Hernangomez. Hardy matched his career-high with 15 points on 7 for 9 shooting while adding two steals in his squad’s 127-117 win on January 7, 2023.

The 2022-23 campaign has been a renaissance for the Sacramento Kings, with De’Aaron Fox now the king of the fourth quarter. Locked in a tight game at home against the Utah Jazz, the point guard blows by Collin Sexton before unleashing a merciless poster dunk over Kelly Olynyk despite giving up eight inches in the exchange. Fox scored at least 10 points in the fourth quarter for the fourth straight contest and, for the game, contributed 24 points, three rebounds and 10 assists in Sacramento’s December 30, 2022 win. It was the Kings’ 19th win of the year, a mark they didn’t reach until Feb. 2 the prior season. 

De'Aaron Fox

A good way to remember the night your team put up 150 points is punctuating the high-scoring effort with a highlight-reel windmill jam. Anthony Edwards gets behind the Chicago Bulls defense running the break and is rewarded with nothing but open space between him and the basket as the Minnesota Timberwolves’ third-year star takes flight and throws down an unforgettable slam. Edwards posted 37 points while adding seven rebounds, a career-best 11 assists, two steals and four three-pointers in Minnesota’s 150-126 win on December 18, 2022.

Jaylen Brown did the prudent thing when confronted by one of the league’s preeminent shot blockers — he passed. The Boston Celtics’ two-time All-Star blows by his initial Brooklyn Nets defender on a baseline drive before a confrontation with Nic Claxton, whose eyes light up with hopes of a swat the moment Brown goes aerial beneath the basket. Instead of attempting the difficult reverse layup, Brown executes a perfectly-timed dump off to a cutting Robert Williams III for a two-handed slam. The Celtics ran circles around their Atlantic Division rivals, with Brown posting 26 points, three rebounds, three assists and seven three-pointers in 12 tries in Boston’s 139-96 victory on February 1, 2023.

The key to a 5-0 start to your season is making the smart play. Now in his 14th season, Jrue Holiday is a master of his craft, using a time-tested handle to gain access to the lane while drawing the Atlanta Hawks’ defense toward him. With three defenders now in the vicinity, the Milwaukee Bucks point guard dishes a last-minute dime to a wide open Brook Lopez for a corner three-pointer. Holiday’s 34 points, two rebounds, 12 assists and four steals kept his squad unbeaten in a 123-115 victory on October 29, 2022.

At this point, stopping DeMar DeRozan is borderline impossible — at best, you hope to contain him. The Boston Celtics, in this case, struggle to do either as the Chicago Bulls’ scoring machine plays one-on-five, getting himself to the basket with a dizzying array of dribbles, spins and crosses before finishing strong with a tough reverse layup. Boston ultimately got the win, but not before DeRozan torched the Celtics for a season-high 46 points on 13-for-23 from the field and 20-of-22 from the line to go with his three rebounds, five assists and two steals on November 4, 2022.

Most players can go an entire career without scoring 50 points in a game — Joel Embiid did it twice in less than a month. After dropping 59 on the Utah Jazz on Nov. 13, Embiid hits the Charlotte Hornets with an encore performance as he trails James Harden up the court before collecting a behind-the-back pass from his All-Star teammate and rumbling down the lane for a strong two-handed slam. Embiid became the first player to score 50 points twice during the 2022-23 campaign as well as the third Philadelphia 76er to hit the mark multiple times in the same season after putting up 53 points, 12 rebounds and three assists in a 131-113 win on December 11, 2022.

Steph Curry never has been one to shy away from putting his legendary range on display. In a rematch of the 2022 NBA Finals against the Boston Celtics, a Golden State Warriors possession ended with a Curry turnover before the nine-time All-Star quickly redeemed himself by picking Jayson Tatum’s pocket on the counterattack. With the second quarter clock hurtling toward zero, Curry only had time to loft a prayer from beyond halfcourt that of course landed in the bottom of the net. Curry posted a team-high 29 points in the overtime battle while adding four rebounds, seven assists, three steals, two blocks and six 3-pointers on January 19, 2023.

Tyler Herro played 175 regular season games over his first three seasons without recording a triple-double. It took him but a dozen in Year 4 to finally check the milestone off his list. The Atlanta Hawks had no answers for the Miami Heat guard, who shows off his connection with teammate Bam Adebayo as he drives straight into the paint before lofting a high-arcing alley-oop pass that gets slammed home with authority. Herro recorded 11 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists, helping the Heat to a 106-98 victory on November 27, 2022.

Following a historic first quarter, there was no stopping LaMelo Ball and the Charlotte Hornets. Ball and his teammates were in perfect synergy all night, as he gathers a dump-off from Mason Plumlee before whipping a fabulous no-look pass back to the cutting center that ends in an easy deuce. The Hornets matched an NBA record with a staggering 51 first-quarter points, and Ball’s 24 points, three rebounds, 12 assists, two steals and seven three-pointers kept the Milwaukee Bucks chasing all night in Charlotte’s runaway 138-109 victory on January 6, 2023.

LaMelo Ball

Having started all but one game he’s played in over the past four seasons, O.G. Anunoby has become a steadying presence in the Toronto Raptors’ lineup. He can score efficiently and is a world-class defender. When Tobias Harris scoops up a steal and races the other way, Toronto’s sixth-year forward stays in lockstep with him the entire way, timing his jump flawlessly and mercilessly turning away the layup attempt. Anunoby was his usual productive self, contributing 19 points, nine rebounds, two assists, two steals and one emphatic block in the October 28, 2022 showdown.

After a slow start to the 2022-23 season, the Orlando Magic turned to a fresh face with a unique basketball arsenal to help stop the bleeding. After three seasons with the Denver Nuggets where he was used sparingly, Bol Bol has been unleashed as an important part of the Magic’s present and future. Against the Charlotte Hornets, the spindly 7-foot-2 center catches a pass in the corner and puts the ball on the floor, exhibiting an impressive handle before letting his otherworldly frame do the rest as he launches himself toward the rim and throws down a ferocious slam. Bol’s impact has increased with more playing time, as he contributed 11 points and seven rebounds in 27 minutes in Orlando’s 113-93 win on October 28, 2022.

How’s that for a special delivery? Playing with the Splash Brothers for as long as he has, Draymond Green is more than comfortable getting creative on offense. The Golden State Warriors forward displays both his elite distributing ability and court vision against the Cleveland Cavaliers, corralling a pass on the wing before immediately dropping off a no-look, behind-the-back dish to a trailing Klay Thompson in the same motion. As usual, Green was at the center of everything the Warriors do, posting two points, nine rebounds, 13 assists and a steal in the defending champions’ 106-101 victory on November 11, 2022.

Jalen Brunson’s handle is so shifty that even extremely athletic players have trouble keeping up. Jeremy Sochan puts in an admirable effort in trying to stick with the New York Knicks point guard, but Brunson’s bag of tricks proves to be too deep as he eludes the San Antonio Spurs rookie in a man-to-man matchup long enough to bury a mid-range jumper. Nikola Jokić can find the open man even when he doesn’t have a firm grasp on the ball. The two-time reigning MVP continues to discover new ways to set up his teammates, as a bobble in the paint turns into Jokić slapping a pass into the corner where an open Kentavious Caldwell-Pope is waiting to bury a three-pointer. The Denver Nuggets superstar had another monster performance, putting up 31 points, 12 rebounds, 14 assists and four blocks for the 80th triple-double of his career in his team’s 115-110 victory over the Utah Jazz on December 10, 2022.

The New York Knicks’ second-year guard stays ready and alert as Jalen Brunson twists and turns his way into lane before spotting him for a kickout three. After his successful triple, Grimes’ stingy defense changes the trajectory of Trae Young’s shot before Grimes is again rewarded for his efforts — this time by Julius Randle, who draws the Atlanta Hawks’ defense into the paint before passing out to him all alone. The back-to-back triples were two of five made attempts by Grimes, who finished with 23 points, four rebounds, two assists and two blocks in New York’s 113-89 win on December 7, 2022.

Herbert Jones continues to make a major impact for the New Orleans Pelicans, first picking Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s pocket, then deftly avoiding the oldest trick in the book while Gilgeous-Alexander attempts to knock the ball off of him as he falls out of bounds. The second-year forward says not so fast, thwarting the guard’s attempt with sure hands, allowing the Pelicans to keep the ball in their possession. Langford gives Gregg Popovich a night for both of them to remember, blowing by Tyler Herro on a baseline dribble-drive before converting an athletic left-handed layup while somehow staying inbounds. Langford scored a career-best 19 points to go with six rebounds, a steal and a block in the Spurs’ 115-111 road victory over the Miami Heat on December 10, 2022.

Lee scored 11 points off the bench — all in the fourth quarter — to go with two rebounds and two assists in helping the Suns erase a 22-point third-quarter deficit to stun the Dallas Mavericks 107-105 on October 19, 2022.

Having seen it work so well for Damian Lillard, Jusuf Nurkić decided he would channel his All-Star teammate’s famous long-range stroke. When Jerami Grant finds Nurkić all alone in the corner, the Portland Trail Blazers big lets it fly from deep and connects on one of his career-high five three-pointers. The ninth-year center had a monster performance, tallying 28 points, 15 rebounds, six assists, two steals and three blocks in Portland’s 124-113 triumph over the Charlotte Hornets on December 26, 2022.

He doesn’t have to wait long, as the fifth-year guard pulls up for a straightaway catch-and-shoot three to bury the hopes of the Portland Trail Blazers. Filling in admirably for an absent Steph Curry, DiVincenzo’s nine points, nine rebounds, four assists, four steals and one clutch three-pointer were the catalyst in his squad’s 118-112 win on December 30, 2022.

Something about playing on the world’s biggest stage brings out the best in Josh Giddey. In his first two career games at Madison Square Garden, Giddey left the Big Apple with the same results — a triple-double and a win. The second-year guard’s quick corner release beats the halftime buzzer, one of 17 triples in 31 tries for the Oklahoma City Thunder against the New York Knicks. Giddey’s 24 points, 10 rebounds and 12 assists placed himself alongside special company — he and Wilt Chamberlain are the only two players to post triple-doubles in their first two games at MSG as the Thunder claimed a 145-135 win on November 13, 2022.

Whether he’s facilitating for his Charlotte Hornets teammates or creating the offense himself, LaMelo Ball is a dynamic playmaker with the ball in his hands. The 2022 All-Star continued turning heads against the Boston Celtics in his third season as he unleashed a slippery spin move that Sam Hauser couldn’t keep up with before finishing the possession with a step-back 3-pointer. Ball tallied 24 points and came up just short of a triple-double by adding nine rebounds and 10 assists in the February 10, 2023 Eastern Conference showdown.

When confident shooters keep firing, the results inevitably follow. Continuing to make progress as an offensive player in the third year of his career, Killian Hayes steps up for the Detroit Pistons, coming up clutch in overtime against the Dallas Mavericks. After breaking a tie with a triple on the preceding possession, the seventh-overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft does it again and puts the game out of reach by burying a step-back dagger with 41.6 seconds remaining. The third-year pro connected on 10 of his 13 shots in the game, scoring eight of his 22 points in overtime while also adding four rebounds and eight assists in Detroit’s 131-125 win on December 1, 2022.

There wasn’t much time to get off a 3-pointer to beat the first quarter buzzer. Good thing Damian Lillard needed next to none. With Shaedon Sharpe inbounding for the Portland Trail Blazers with 1.1 seconds on the clock, Lillard corralled the pass at the logo and in the same motion fired a 40-footer that was all net as time expired. The seven-time All-Star converted eight treys — all in the first half — as Portland raced to a 19-point halftime lead, and for the game Lillard posted 40 points, six rebounds and five assists in a 127-115 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on February 13, 2023. 

With a key pillar of the Houston Rockets’ past in the building, it was the stars of the future that delivered a win. Kevin Porter Jr. is indeed one of those building blocks, and while he has continued to evolve offensively in Year 4, it was his defense that saved the day against the Philadelphia 76ers. James Harden attempts to hit the Rockets with his patented stepback three-pointer that made him an MVP in Houston, but Porter Jr. blocks it with flawless anticipation to send the game to overtime. It took two overtimes, but Houston dispatched Philly 132-123 on December 5, 2022, with Porter Jr. posting 24 points, six rebounds and three assists.

In a superstar-driven league, the Boston Celtics have one of the best ones out there. An All-Star four times all before the age of 25, Jayson Tatum kept up his high level of play against the Detroit Pistons when he beat a pair of defenders on a dribble drive to the basket. The sixth-year forward dazzled with a highlight-reel between-the-legs maneuver before he finished the play with a crossover into a running layup for two of his game-high 38 points on 15 of 24 from the field and 6 of 10 from downtown. Tatum also added nine rebounds and seven assists in the 127-109 triumph on February 15, 2023. 

Pascal Siakam and the Toronto Raptors were in need of a win, and the Portland Trail Blazers were left footing the bill. Siakam takes the ball from Fred VanVleet on the elbow and goes to work, posting up Josh Hart with some fancy footwork featuring a between-the-legs dribble and smooth spin move combo before finishing with a layup. After dropping three straight, Siakam helped his team get its first win of 2023 by posting a team-high 27 points along with four rebounds, six assists and two steals in the 117-105 triumph on January 8, 2023.

After arriving via trade in Jan. 2022, a shoulder injury cut Cam Reddish’s run with the New York Knicks short after just 15 games. Now that he’s healthy again, the rest of the league better watch out. Against the Memphis Grizzlies in New York’s first game of the 2022-23 season, Reddish wastes little time reintroducing himself to the basketball world, drifting into the corner to catch a pass from Jalen Brunson and sinking a contested three-pointer with three seconds left in regulation to force overtime. Although the Knicks lost the game, the Big Apple was surely buzzing after Reddish put up 22 points, five rebounds, three steals and a block on 9-of-15 shooting off the bench in the October 19, 2022 battle.

Jamal Murray’s soaring confidence has arrived at the perfect time for the West-leading Denver Nuggets. Murray put the Atlanta Hawks and rest of the NBA on notice with a scorching performance from downtown as he went to work on Clint Capela, creating space with some smooth handles before burying a step-back triple. It was one of seven 3-pointers in 12 tries for Murray, who posted a season-best 41 points to go with five rebounds and seven assists in Denver’s 128-108 win on February 4, 2023. 

Now on his fifth team in five seasons, Isaiah Hartenstein seems to be finding a home with the New York Knicks. Playing against the Boston Celtics, Hartenstein shows off his fundamentals, crashing the boards and turning a Jalen Brunson misfire into a one-handed put-back slam right on top of a helpless opponent. In a 38-minute run for Hartenstein, the big man made five of his six field goals for 10 points, while adding 14 rebounds, an assist and a block in the November 5, 2022 Atlantic Division showdown.

No inbound is a given when Jose Alvarado is on the prowl. The New Orleans Pelicans reserve guard is a bundle of energy whenever he’s on the court, not to mention waiting for the offense to make a mistake that he can capitalize on. Following a made free throw by Zion Williamson, the Houston Rockets throw the ball in while expecting to begin the next possession. But Alvarado has other ideas, picking Kevin Porter Jr.’s pocket, ending up with a steal and layup in the blink of an eye. Alvarado gave a huge lift to the second unit, converting 5-of-6 field-goal attempts for 12 points, two rebounds, five assists and three steals in 20 minutes amidst a 119-106 victory on November 12, 2022.
