As far as NBA debuts go, Paolo Banchero’s was one of the best. The Orlando Magic’s No. 1 pick won’t soon forget his first game against the Detroit Pistons, and neither will Cory Joseph after Banchero put the 12-year veteran on a poster with a demonstrative dunk. Banchero made 11 of his 18 field goal attempts for 27 points, nine rebounds, five assists and two blocks, cementing one of the best debuts from a No. 1 pick in the past half-century. The Pistons won the October 19, 2022 game, but the Magic left Motown feeling fantastic about their new franchise cornerstone.

It’s no secret that Giannis Antetokounmpo has some of the most enviable length and reach in the NBA — but he was sure to remind the Indiana Pacers anyway. The two-time MVP proves to be unstoppable in transition following a steal as he runs the break with Grayson Allen, who hits a cutting Antetokounmpo with a pass in space which is all he needs to land a spectacular dunk over two defenders. The seven-time All-Star’s pure athleticism was overwhelming for the Pacers — as were Antetokounmpo’s 41 points, 12 rebounds and six assists in the Milwaukee Bucks’ 141-131 victory on January 27, 2023.

Luka Dončić only played three quarters, so he made sure to announce his presence loud and with authority. The Portland Trail Blazers have no defensive solutions for the Dallas Mavericks superstar, who pump fakes a defender out of his sneakers and fools another with a head fake while driving strong to the rim before elevating for a massive one-handed slam. Despite sitting out the entire fourth quarter, Dončić dropped 33 points, six rebounds, nine assists and five triples in his squad’s 130-110 victory on December 16, 2022.

With a game’s outcome hanging in the balance, there are few more qualified candidates than Jimmy Butler to take the big shot. Butler’s brand is as strong as ever against the Houston Rockets as he executes a perfect backdoor cut that puts himself in prime position to throw down Gabe Vincent’s alley-oop inbounds pass with 0.1 seconds left on the clock. The six-time All-Star rarely disappoints in the clutch, as his 16 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals helped deliver the Miami Heat a 97-95 victory on February 10, 2023.

Most players can go an entire career without scoring 50 points in a game — Joel Embiid did it twice in less than a month. After dropping 59 on the Utah Jazz on Nov. 13, Embiid hits the Charlotte Hornets with an encore performance as he trails James Harden up the court before collecting a behind-the-back pass from his All-Star teammate and rumbling down the lane for a strong two-handed slam. Embiid became the first player to score 50 points twice during the 2022-23 campaign as well as the third Philadelphia 76er to hit the mark multiple times in the same season after putting up 53 points, 12 rebounds and three assists in a 131-113 win on December 11, 2022.

Anthony Edwards makes magic happen at both ends for the Minnesota Timberwolves, first recording an unforgiving block on the Miami Heat’s Max Strus before quickly finding the ball back in his hands while leading the transition attack. The first-overall selection of the 2020 NBA Draft again comes face-to-face with Strus, breaking him down off the dribble atop the key before launching a shifty stepback triple that’s all net. Edwards posted 22 points, seven rebounds, four assists, four steals and four three-pointers in his squad’s 105-101 victory on November 21, 2022.

Many NBA rookies are brought along slowly into their new team’s rotations — Keegan Murray isn’t one of them. The fourth overall pick and Summer League MVP sat out the Sacramento Kings’ first contest but made a major impact in game No. 2, gathering a bounce pass from De’Aaron Fox and calmly knocking down a three-pointer for the first bucket of his career. Murray was far from finished, as he connected on seven of his 10 shots for 19 points — the third-most by a Kings rookie in a season debut — while adding five rebounds, two assists, two blocks and three triples in a battle against the LA Clippers on October 22, 2022.

The first six minutes of Jalen Williams’ career turned out to be pretty perfect. After the Oklahoma City Thunder made him the 12th pick in the draft, Williams rewards their faith, passing up a three-point attempt to instead take a run right at Karl-Anthony Towns. Williams puts the ball on the floor with his left hand, driving hard toward the basket and getting the best of the Minnesota Timberwolves’ three-time All-Star with a baseline floater. Williams made both of his field-goal attempts and added an assist during his October 19, 2022 professional debut.

It took all of one game in the NBA for Bennedict Mathurin to announce his presence. The offensively-gifted Indiana Pacers rookie instantly rewards the team’s faith in him, corralling an inbound pass underneath the basket and leaving his defender scratching his head with a ridiculously difficult reverse layup and foul. Mathurin, the sixth overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, came off the bench to score 19 points on 7-for-15 shooting in his debut while adding seven rebounds, two assists and two steals against the Washington Wizards on October 19, 2022.

Adding Jaden Ivey to a Detroit Pistons team loaded with young talent has brought basketball excitement back to the Motor City. Despite it being his first career NBA game, the rookie point guard looked at ease in his debut against the Orlando Magic. When a steal lands in his hands, the lightning-quick Ivey is off to the races leading the counterattack, dropping an underhanded scoop pass to teammate Saddiq Bey for a transition layup less than two minutes into his NBA career. Ivey played with the poise of a veteran, tallying 19 points, three rebounds, four assists and three steals in a 113-109 Pistons victory on October 19, 2022.

It took all of one game for Jabari Smith Jr. to make an immediate impact with the Houston Rockets. A few months after Houston made him the third pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, the 6-foot-11 rookie rewards his team’s faith in him by showcasing his deft shooting touch from long range. Against the Atlanta Hawks in his first professional game, Smith Jr. crosses halfcourt, takes a pass from a teammate and without hesitation rises up from way behind the arc to drain one of his three triples. The Rockets may have lost the game, but they left Atlanta feeling confident about the future after Smith Jr. posted 17 points and seven rebounds on October 19, 2022.

It’s always nice to start your NBA career off with a win, especially if you play a big role in the victory. Jalen Duren immediately checks both things off his list for the Detroit Pistons, in one fell swoop corralling a steal and firing an outlet pass up the court to teammate Cory Joseph, who then waits a beat before hitting a cutting Duren in stride. The 13th overall pick in the draft finishes the play by posterizing a helpless Orlando Magic defender. Duren gave his new squad a big lift off the bench, tallying 14 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks in 22 minutes, allowing the Pistons to open the season with a 113-109 win on October 19, 2022.

A double-double in your NBA debut? Not too shabby for Utah Jazz rookie Walker Kessler, who came to play in his first career game against the Denver Nuggets. The 7-footer runs the floor with teammate Collin Sexton, who drops off a pass at the foul line and leaves Kessler face-to-face with two-time reigning MVP Nikola Jokić. Kessler shows no fear, taking one dribble before pivoting his way around the Joker for a hard-earned layup. The 22nd-overall pick made all five of his field-goal attempts for 12 points while adding 10 rebounds, an assist and a steal, helping Utah prevail 123-102 on October 19, 2022.

Despite not suiting up during his lone college campaign last season, Shaedon Sharpe was more than ready for his NBA debut. The Portland Trail Blazers’ prized rookie shows no evidence of rust against the Sacramento Kings, casually shaking off his defender and draining a corner triple off an inbound pass. Sharpe made a major impact in just 16 minutes off the bench, scoring 12 points — shooting 3-for-3 on three-pointers — and adding two rebounds in a 115-108 win on October 19, 2022.

Jeremy Sochan fits the blueprint like a glove and is already fitting seamlessly into the Spurs’ system. Despite only playing 15 minutes, Eason made a strong first impression, connecting on 4 of 6 field goal attempts for eight points while grabbing seven rebounds in the October 19, 2022 showdown with the Atlanta Hawks.

Immediately after recording the first steal of his career in his NBA debut, 16th overall pick AJ Griffin takes a bounce pass from Dejounte Murray and shows zero hesitation rising up to drain a three-pointer on his first professional shot. Griffin packed a ton of action in his six minutes off the bench, connecting on three of his field goals — including 2-for-3 from downtown — against the Charlotte Hornets on October 23, 2022.

The eighth overall selection in the draft proves immediately helpful to his new New Orleans Pelicans teammates, coming around a screen and driving into the lane against the Brooklyn Nets. Rather than force the issue against multiple defenders, Daniels showcases his distributing ability by dropping off an over-the-shoulder flick to Larry Nance Jr. for a jumper in the paint. Daniels picked up two assists in three minutes, leaving his mark on the Pelicans’ 130-108 season-opening victory on October 19, 2022.

The 20th overall pick makes his professional debut in San Antonio’s seventh game of the season, scoring the first points of his career on a catch-and-shoot three-pointer off an assist from Keldon Johnson. Branham contributed two rebounds and assists in addition to his five points in a 19-minute run off the bench in San Antonio’s 107-98 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on October 30, 2022.

The 34th overall pick cleans up underneath for the Oklahoma City Thunder, tipping in a missed layup by Ousmane Dieng for his first career field goal against the Minnesota Timberwolves. The rookie forward converted 2 of his 4 shots for four points while also grabbing six rebounds and dishing out two assists in a productive first run on October 23, 2022.

Second-round draft pick Christian Koloko immediately showcases his hustle and court awareness for the Toronto Raptors, dutifully tracking teammate Pascal Siakam’s path to the basket and throwing down a monstrous putback dunk when the shot rims out. Koloko scored three points while adding six rebounds and a block in 15 energetic minutes off the bench in Toronto’s 108-105 opening-night win over the Cleveland Cavaliers on October 19, 2022.

Granted an opportunity to strike from the corner, Curry sets his sight on the rim, splitting two defenders with a smooth behind-the-back maneuver, then finishes at the cup with a layup. The four-time champion scores two of his game-high 24 points on the play while also chipping in six rebounds, 10 assists, two steals and five triples in his squad’s 111-101 win on November 18, 2022.

Getting drafted to Ja Morant’s squad has all kinds of benefits. Eyeing up an opportunity to hit his superstar teammate for a bucket, David Roddy whips a one-handed cross-court pass to Morant, who finishes the possession by knocking down a three-pointer. The Memphis Grizzlies rookie picked up two rebounds and an assist in his 13 minutes of professional action, a 115-112 overtime win over the New York Knicks on October 19, 2022.

A healthy Anthony Davis is double trouble for the opposition. Playing in his first game since an injury forced him to shut it down early a season ago, Davis proves just how scary he can be against the defending champion Golden State Warriors. First, the eight-time All-Star deposits a difficult floater off an inbound pass, then uses all of his lengthy 6-foot-10 frame to pick off a lazy Steph Curry pass on the ensuing trip up the floor. Davis then beats everyone in a race to the hoop, dropping in a layup while absorbing contact for an and-one opportunity. The Warriors won the game, but Los Angeles Lakers fans have to be feeling good about Davis’ 27-point, six-rebound, four-steal effort on October 18, 2022.

On a nightly basis, Nikola Jokić makes the difficult look routine. The two-time reigning MVP has something special planned for the Houston Rockets, catching the ball in the post before burying a turnaround baseline jumper in rhythm on just one foot. The four-time All-Star tormented the Rockets all night, scoring 32 points on 11-of-17 shooting — his third time hitting 30 points in the past four games — while also grabbing 12 rebounds and dishing out eight assists in the Denver Nuggets’ 129-113 victory on November 28, 2022.

New season, same old Damian Lillard. The six-time All-Star is already in midseason form in the early stages of his 11th season with the Portland Trail Blazers, breaking the hearts of opposing teams thanks to his impeccably clutch shooting. Against the high-powered Phoenix Suns, Lillard does what he does best, using a dizzying array of dribbles as he hunts for his shot. Multiple defenders give chase to no avail, as Lillard unleashes a 20-footer with a high degree of difficulty that finds its home in the bottom of the net. It was the 41st time in Lillard’s career that he exploded for 40 or more in a game, extinguishing the Suns with 41 points, seven rebounds and three assists in Portland’s 113-111 overtime victory on October 21, 2022.

When you’re on the court with LeBron James as your teammate, it’s only a matter of time before opportunity knocks. Following a thunderous James rejection of Paul George, Austin Reaves scoops up the loose ball and motors the other way in transition before lobbing a flawless alley-oop pass to Lonnie Walker IV, who finishes the slam to get the home crowd on its feet. Reaves had an effective 22-minute run off the bench, posting four points, four rebounds and two assists in the Los Angeles Lakers’ intra-city rivalry game against the LA Clippers on October 20, 2022.

He didn’t hit the game-winning shot, but Malik Beasley still found a way to be a hero twice. Down by four points in the closing seconds, things looked bleak for the Utah Jazz before Beasley hit a clutch triple to pull his squad within one. And he wasn’t done either — after Nickeil Alexander-Walker picks Jordan Poole’s pocket on the ensuing inbound play, Beasley scoops up the loose ball and fires a perfect bounce pass to Simone Fontecchio for the go-ahead slam with 1.4 seconds left on the clock. Beasley finished with 18 points, three rebounds, one clutch assist and four three-pointers in Utah’s thrilling 124-123 win over the Golden State Warriors on December 7, 2022.

Tyrese Haliburton was a revelation in 26 games for the Indiana Pacers after a midseason acquisition in February 2022. To the delight of Pacers fans, the talented third-year point guard has picked up right where he left off to open the 2022-23 season. In Indiana’s first game against the Washington Wizards, Haliburton pushes the ball up the court and takes on all comers, using a yo-yo-dribble-hesi combination to fool the defense before clearing a path to the rim and throwing down a dunk. Haliburton scored a game-high 26 points to go with four rebounds and seven assists on October 19, 2022.

He’s so good that he doesn’t even need his eyes to make spectacular plays. Such is life when you’re Giannis Antetokounmpo, who continues to make the impossible happen on a nightly basis. Returning from a two-game absence against the Atlanta Hawks, the Milwaukee Bucks superstar makes up for lost time by flicking a no-look over-the-shoulder dime to a waiting Bobby Portis Jr., who finishes the possession with a layup. It was another typical night at the office for the two-time MVP, who finished the November 14, 2022 game with 27 points, eight rebounds and four assists.

It doesn’t get much better than a game-winning buzzer beater in your first NBA season, but such is reality for Indiana Pacers rookie Andrew Nembhard. Nembhard gets the opportunity thanks to a Tyrese Haliburton offensive board in the closing seconds, and when Haliburton can’t find his own shot after some dribble maneuvers, he spots Nembhard on the wing. The moment wasn’t too big for the 31st overall pick, as he did not shy away from unleashing a dagger over the outstretched fingertips of LeBron James. Nembhard connected on 4 of his 7 three-point attempts for 12 points, four rebounds and two blocks, helping his team rally from a 17-point fourth quarter deficit in the 116-115 win over the Los Angeles Lakers on November 28, 2022.

If at first you don’t succeed, try again. These are words to live by for Kevon Looney, as the Golden State Warriors big man got to play the role of double overtime savior against a feisty Atlanta Hawks squad. When Klay Thompson — who scored 54 points in the game — had a rare misfire, this game seemed destined for a third extra frame until Looney positioned himself for the putback try. Looney’s first attempt is off the mark, but he stays with the ball and gets another opportunity, this time laying it in as time expires. Looney’s 14 points, 20 rebounds and four assists were a major catalyst in Golden State’s 143-141 triumph on January 2, 2023.

Anything you can do, Saddiq Bey can do better. On the road facing the Golden State Warriors, Bey’s Detroit Pistons found themselves tied with 2.3 seconds remaining following a clutch Klay Thompson three-pointer. On the ensuing possession, Killian Hayes inbounds to Bey and the third-year forward doesn’t miss, letting fly a game-winning triple at the buzzer while falling backward. It was one of four treys for Bey, who on a floor filled with precision marksmen hit the biggest shot of the night, getting the last laugh by posting 17 points, three rebounds and two steals in the 122-119 win on January 4, 2023.

While he may have fallen just short of his first triple-double of the season, Julius Randle won’t forget this dunk anytime soon. Neither will the Toronto Raptors, who do their best to slow down the two-time All-Star but Randle proves to be determined as he drives into the paint with his right hand before taking flight and landing a thunderous left-handed slam while being blanketed by multiple Raptors defenders. Randle posted a fantastic all-around performance of 23 points, 19 rebounds and eight assists for the New York Knicks on January 22, 2023.

Jaylen Brown welcomed Donovan Mitchell to the Eastern Conference the best way he knows how — by putting him on a poster. Playing in just his fifth game with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Mitchell receives a rude awakening courtesy of the Boston Celtics’ 2021 All-Star. When Brown picks off a Mitchell bounce pass, he and teammate Marcus Smart motor the other way on a 2-on-1 advantage. Brown collects a bounce pass and then takes flight, slamming an angry one-handed dunk on top of his helpless opponent. Brown put together a solid performance of 32 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals on October 28, 2022.

If you leave Kevin Huerter this wide open in the closing seconds of a tight game then plan on leaving with a loss. The third time's the charm for Huerter and the Sacramento Kings, who stay with the play by collecting two offensive boards after a pair of De’Aaron Fox midrange misfires. When the ball makes its way back out to the perimeter, Keegan Murray swings it to an all-alone Huerter who drains the backbreaking triple with 9.2 seconds remaining. The game-winner was the cap on a huge night for Huerter, who finished with a team-high 30 points on 12 of 18 shooting to pair with two rebounds, two assists and six three-pointers in the thrilling 126-125 win on December 30, 2022.

Charging straight into the lane against three San Antonio Spurs defenders is not for the faint of heart — but it is for Zion Williamson. The New Orleans Pelicans All-Star forward scoops up a bounce pass on the elbow and makes his move, putting the ball on the floor and muscling his way to a layup despite spinning his way into a traffic jam underneath the basket. Williamson poured in a season-high 32 points on 14-of-18 from the field to go along with 11 rebounds and two steals in his squad’s 129-110 win on November 23, 2022.

If at first you miss your shot, give it a try again at much closer range. Lauri Markkanen comes up short on a three-point attempt against the Sacramento Kings but is thankful for second chances as a teammate snares the offensive board and whips the ball back to a cutting Markkanen, who delivers a second time around with a gravity-defying slam over Domantas Sabonis. The Utah Jazz All-Star forward produced a game-high 36 points on 16 of 24 shooting while also collecting five rebounds on December 30, 2022.

When Bam Adebayo is charging toward the basket with a full head of steam, enter the paint at your own risk. Joe Harris gives it his best shot on defense, but there was no slowing down the Miami Heat center as he gets in front of his initial defender and rumbles down the lane before soaring through the air and finishing with an earth-shaking dunk. The Brooklyn Nets won a nail-biter, but Adebayo’s throwdown won’t be forgotten anytime soon as the 2020 NBA All-Star finished with 10 points, eight rebounds and two assists on January 8, 2023.

Donovan Mitchell’s honeymoon with the Cleveland Cavaliers continued against the Los Angeles Lakers. Taking advantage of a favorable one-on-one matchup with Austin Reaves, Mitchell hits his defender with some slick dribbles before suddenly pulling up for a stepback triple that helps the Cavs pull away late in the fourth quarter. Mitchell logged his second 40-point performance of the season, posting 43 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals in Cleveland’s 116-102 triumph on December 6, 2022.

DeMar DeRozan doesn’t miss much, but when he does it’s good to have Ayo Dosunmu around. With the Chicago Bulls and Atlanta Hawks deadlocked at 108, DeRozan tries to play the role of hero with a tough turnaround jumper over DeAndre Hunter. Oladipo was a spark plug off the bench for the Heat, chipping in 23 points, five rebounds, five assists, three steals and four three-pointers during a 35-minute run in Miami’s 126-123 victory over the Utah Jazz on December 31, 2022.

Never underestimate James Harden’s ability to come up with creative new ways of making plays for his Philadelphia 76ers teammates. Back in Houston on the court he called home for parts of nine seasons, the 2018 MVP shifts into facilitator mode when he whips a low-to-the-ground bounce pass to a cutting Shake Milton, who finishes the possession with an easy layup. The 10-time All-Star managed 21 points, four rebounds, seven assists, two steals and four triples in Philly’s overtime battle against the Houston Rockets on December 5, 2022.

Sleep on Julius Randle’s outside game if you want but you might get burned. The New York Knicks forward shows the Minnesota Timberwolves that his perimeter game has the ability to deal serious damage, first putting his defender on skates before confidently sticking a step-back three-pointer. It was far from a fluke occurrence, as Randle connected on eight of his 13 attempts from beyond the arc, burying the Timberwolves with a game-high 31 points to go with eight rebounds and three assists in New York’s 120-107 road win on November 7, 2022.

One year after his breakout campaign, Jordan Poole continues to evolve offensively. Pressed into starting duty for a resting Klay Thompson, the fourth-year guard keeps the Golden State Warriors offense humming with a strong drive into the paint before dropping off a beauty of a behind-the-back no-look pass to a cutting Jonathan Kuminga. Poole’s 21 points, two rebounds, five assists and five three-pointers helped deliver the Warriors a 120-101 win over the Houston Rockets on December 3, 2022.

With Giannis Antetokounmpo on the bench with six fouls, Lopez’s lone field goal was crucial in Milwaukee’s fourth consecutive win, and his four points, six rebounds and three blocks got the job done in the 106-105 victory on December 9, 2022.

Looking for their fifth win in six games, the seven-time All-Star drives the ball up the floor with a head of steam, faking a pass to Joe Harris on the wing before dropping in a high-arcing floater over his defender’s fingertips. Irving’s game-high 33 points on 14 of 24 shooting — along with five rebounds, nine assists and four blocks — were too much for the Charlotte Hornets to handle as the Nets claimed a 122-116 victory on December 7, 2022.

The New Orleans Pelicans are powerless to slow down the two-time reigning MVP as he chases down a loose ball and weaves his way through three defenders with a dazzlingly-deceptive drive before finishing with a layup. Jokić made 10 of his 14 shots for 26 points, 18 rebounds and 15 assists as the Nuggets improved to 16-0 on the season whenever he posts a triple-double, as Denver got by the Pelicans 122-113 on January 31, 2023.

When Klay Thompson’s on a heater, let him cook. The Golden State Warriors are happy to oblige as a vintage lights-out shooting performance from Thompson was just what they needed to snap an eight-game road losing skid to open the season. Against the Houston Rockets, the five-time All-Star grabs a pass from Steph Curry and lets it fly — one of his 10 made three-pointers in 13 attempts. Thompson exploded for a season-high 41 points on 14-for-23 shooting while adding four rebounds, three assists and two steals in Golden State’s 127-120 win on November 20, 2022.

In year 15, Russell Westbrook can still turn any pass on the court into an assist. The Detroit Pistons learned that the hard way as Westbrook — inbounding far away from the basket — needed less than two seconds to whip a three-quarter court laser into the hands of Lonnie Walker IV, who buries the catch-and-shoot triple to beat the halftime buzzer. Ten of Westbrook’s game-high 12 assists came in the first half, as the nine-time All-Star added 10 points and five rebounds in the Los Angeles Lakers’ 128-121 victory on November 18, 2022.

Jamal Murray looks like his old self again, which is bad news for the rest of the league. Against the Los Angeles Lakers, the Denver point guard uses a pick from Nikola Jokić to gain access into the lane. Met by a wall of defenders, Murray wisely passes up the shot attempt and instead opts for an acrobatic dish to his MVP teammate, who punctuates the possession with a floater. Murray produced 13 points, four rebounds, six assists and two steals in helping Denver prevail 110-99 on October 26, 2022.

The 2022-23 campaign has been a renaissance for the Sacramento Kings, with De’Aaron Fox now the king of the fourth quarter. Locked in a tight game at home against the Utah Jazz, the point guard blows by Collin Sexton before unleashing a merciless poster dunk over Kelly Olynyk despite giving up eight inches in the exchange. Fox scored at least 10 points in the fourth quarter for the fourth straight contest and, for the game, contributed 24 points, three rebounds and 10 assists in Sacramento’s December 30, 2022 win. It was the Kings’ 19th win of the year, a mark they didn’t reach until Feb. 2 the prior season.

New season, same results for Andrew Wiggins and the Golden State Warriors. Fresh off a transformative title run a season ago, Wiggins and company are back to defend the crown. Against an overmatched Sacramento Kings squad, the 2022 All-Star shows last year’s postseason run was no fluke, stepping into a passing lane and picking off a lazy pass. Wiggins is off to the races from there, finishing the fast break with a slam en route 24 points, five rebounds, three steals and two blocks in Golden State’s 130-125 victory on October 23, 2022.

Jaylen Brown did the prudent thing when confronted by one of the league’s preeminent shot blockers — he passed. The Boston Celtics’ two-time All-Star blows by his initial Brooklyn Nets defender on a baseline drive before a confrontation with Nic Claxton, whose eyes light up with hopes of a swat the moment Brown goes aerial beneath the basket. Instead of attempting the difficult reverse layup, Brown executes a perfectly-timed dump off to a cutting Robert Williams III for a two-handed slam. The Celtics ran circles around their Atlantic Division rivals, with Brown posting 26 points, three rebounds, three assists and seven three-pointers in 12 tries in Boston’s 139-96 victory on February 1, 2023.

Anthony Davis may have scored 55 points, but he was still powerless to stop a soaring Daniel Gafford. After three point-blank misses at one end, the Washington Wizards push the tempo with numbers in their favor. With Davis the lone defender in a 2-on-1, Corey Kispert throws up a lob and Gafford does the rest, catching the alley-oop with his hand well behind his head before tomahawking his way around the defenseless big man. Gafford could hardly miss, shooting 9-for-10 for 19 points, adding in seven rebounds and two blocks on December 4, 2022.

The key to a 5-0 start to your season is making the smart play. Now in his 14th season, Jrue Holiday is a master of his craft, using a time-tested handle to gain access to the lane while drawing the Atlanta Hawks’ defense toward him. With three defenders now in the vicinity, the Milwaukee Bucks point guard dishes a last-minute dime to a wide open Brook Lopez for a corner three-pointer. Holiday’s 34 points, two rebounds, 12 assists and four steals kept his squad unbeaten in a 123-115 victory on October 29, 2022.

At this point, stopping DeMar DeRozan is borderline impossible — at best, you hope to contain him. The Boston Celtics, in this case, struggle to do either as the Chicago Bulls’ scoring machine plays one-on-five, getting himself to the basket with a dizzying array of dribbles, spins and crosses before finishing strong with a tough reverse layup. Boston ultimately got the win, but not before DeRozan torched the Celtics for a season-high 46 points on 13-for-23 from the field and 20-of-22 from the line to go with his three rebounds, five assists and two steals on November 4, 2022.

In just his second game back from an injury that caused him to miss all but nine games a year ago, Michael Porter Jr. has opened the 2022-23 season looking very much like his old self. Drawing one of the game’s toughest defensive assignments in Steph Curry, Porter Jr. doesn’t flinch, staying in lockstep with the four-time champion and two-time MVP on his path to the basket, swatting Curry’s shot with authority. Porter Jr. brought it on the offensive end too, contributing 17 points and six rebounds in the Denver Nuggets’ 128-123 road win at the defending champion Golden State Warriors on October 21, 2022.

Even when you send a double team Trae Young’s way, he still finds ways to beat you. When two Detroit Pistons converge behind the arc to prevent him from bombing a triple, the two-time All-Star does the next best thing and whips a no-look pass into the post to Clint Capela, who converts the layup attempt while drawing a foul. Young’s elite ability to make any shot or pass makes him nearly impossible to defend, as his 36 points, two rebounds, 12 assists and four triples were enough to sink the Pistons 136-112 on October 28, 2022.

Tyler Herro played 175 regular season games over his first three seasons without recording a triple-double. It took him but a dozen in Year 4 to finally check the milestone off his list. The Atlanta Hawks had no answers for the Miami Heat guard, who shows off his connection with teammate Bam Adebayo as he drives straight into the paint before lofting a high-arcing alley-oop pass that gets slammed home with authority. Herro recorded 11 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists, helping the Heat to a 106-98 victory on November 27, 2022.

As the LA Clippers were quick to discover, fancy footwork in the frontcourt is no fun to defend. Now in his second season, Houston Rockets center Alperen Şengün continues to impress — after setting a screen for a teammate, the 6-foot-11 Turkish big man collapses toward the basket and catches a pass in the paint before pivoting around his defender with a nimble spin move. The subsequent layup was good for two of Şengün’s team-high 26 points, and he also chipped in 13 rebounds, two assists and a steal in the November 2, 2022 Western Conference showdown.

Having started all but one game he’s played in over the past four seasons, O.G. Anunoby has become a steadying presence in the Toronto Raptors’ lineup. He can score efficiently and is a world-class defender. When Tobias Harris scoops up a steal and races the other way, Toronto’s sixth-year forward stays in lockstep with him the entire way, timing his jump flawlessly and mercilessly turning away the layup attempt. Anunoby was his usual productive self, contributing 19 points, nine rebounds, two assists, two steals and one emphatic block in the October 28, 2022 showdown.

Following a historic first quarter, there was no stopping LaMelo Ball and the Charlotte Hornets. Ball and his teammates were in perfect synergy all night, as he gathers a dump-off from Mason Plumlee before whipping a fabulous no-look pass back to the cutting center that ends in an easy deuce. The Hornets matched an NBA record with a staggering 51 first-quarter points, and Ball’s 24 points, three rebounds, 12 assists, two steals and seven three-pointers kept the Milwaukee Bucks chasing all night in Charlotte’s runaway 138-109 victory on January 6, 2023.

The Utah Jazz didn’t learn their lesson the first time they tried to trespass in Deandre Ayton’s paint, so he was more than willing to remind them again. Mike Conley gains access to the lane with a pretty crossover move but fails to account for the Phoenix Suns’ center, who viciously denies the attempt. When the deflection falls into Conley’s hands again, he decides to give it another shot and is promptly denied. The Suns lost a heartbreaker, but Ayton pulled his weight with 17 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists and three blocks on November 18, 2022.

When Devin Booker is rolling, he’s one of the hardest players in the NBA to contain. The Sacramento Kings had few answers for the Phoenix Suns star, as Booker takes an inbounds pass and gets to work in beating Davion Mitchell off the dribble with a behind-the-back move while spinning around his defender for the and-one layup. The three-time All-Star went off for 44 points on 17 of 28 shooting while also contributing eight rebounds, four assists and six steals in Phoenix’s 122-117 road victory on November 28, 2022, the Suns’ fifth consecutive win.

Jalen Brunson’s handle is so shifty that even extremely athletic players have trouble keeping up. Jeremy Sochan puts in an admirable effort in trying to stick with the New York Knicks point guard, but Brunson’s bag of tricks proves to be too deep as he eludes the San Antonio Spurs rookie in a man-to-man matchup long enough to bury a mid-range jumper. Brunson erupted for a career-high 38 points on 17 of 27 shooting and the Knicks needed every one of them — along with seven rebounds and six assists — in the 117-114 nail-biting victory on January 4, 2023.

How’s that for a special delivery? Playing with the Splash Brothers for as long as he has, Draymond Green is more than comfortable getting creative on offense. The Golden State Warriors forward displays both his elite distributing ability and court vision against the Cleveland Cavaliers, corralling a pass on the wing before immediately dropping off a no-look, behind-the-back dish to a trailing Klay Thompson in the same motion. As usual, Green was at the center of everything the Warriors do, posting two points, nine rebounds, 13 assists and a steal in the defending champions’ 106-101 victory on November 11, 2022.

Brook Lopez has no time for Houston Rockets guard Jalen Green’s drive to the hoop, literally ripping the ball out of Green’s hands in his attempt to score and needing only one arm to do so. It was a block party for the Milwaukee Bucks’ 15-year veteran, who swatted five shots in the October 22, 2022 contest. The seven-footer did a little bit of everything for the Bucks — in addition to the five blocks, Lopez scored nine points, grabbed five rebounds, dished out two assists, grabbed two steals and sank a trio of three-pointers in Milwaukee’s runaway 125-105 victory.

There’s efficiency… and then there’s Grant Williams. As his Boston Celtics opened the 2022-23 campaign defending their Eastern Conference crown, Williams brought with him some of last season’s magic. Coming off the bench against the rival Philadelphia 76ers, Williams refused to miss, pump faking Shake Milton out of his sneakers while sinking a corner three-pointer. Williams made all five of his field goal attempts — including three triples — along with a rebound and assist in Boston’s 126-117 victory on October 18, 2022.

The game just looks easy when Cade Cunningham is playing with confidence. The first overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft looks to be in his comfort zone with a strong drive to the basket against the Atlanta Hawks, finishing with an underhanded high-arcing scoop shot off the glass in traffic. Cunningham scored 27 of his career-high 35 points in the first half while also chipping in nine rebounds and eight assists for the Detroit Pistons on October 28, 2022.

Seeking a momentum shift after a sluggish start to the season, the Sacramento Kings called upon offseason addition Kevin Huerter to reverse their fortunes. Happy to oblige, Huerter grabs a defensive rebound and quickly takes matters into his own hands. Catching the flat-footed Miami Heat defense napping, the fifth-year shooting guard showcases his quick-shot ability from long range, pulling up from way downtown to bury one of his seven three-pointers of the ballgame. Huerter’s sizzling night from the field — 8-for-11 and 7-for-8 from deep — led to a team-high 27 points, along with three rebounds and seven assists in Sacramento’s 119-113 victory on October 29, 2022.

For the 20th time in his decorated career, Paul George did something most NBA players won’t sniff even once — score 40 points in a game. Against the Sacramento Kings, the seven-time All-Star enters total domination mode, taking a pass atop the key before stepping on the accelerator and hitting the defense with an unguardable spin move en route to two of his 40. The LA Clippers needed every one of them to get past the pesky Kings, as George’s 40 points, six rebounds, six assists and two steals were the difference in the 111-109 road win on October 22, 2022. The output made George the 14th active player to score 40 or more in a game at least 20 times.

After missing the Toronto Raptors’ previous three games with an injury, the 2022 first-time All-Star issues a harsh reminder to the Chicago Bulls at how deadly his stroke is when he’s feeling it. The seventh-year point guard shakes off suffocating defensive pressure from Chicago’s Ayo Dosunmu, as VanVleet dribbles behind his back before absorbing contact and somehow getting an off-balance jumper to fall. VanVleet was at his very best, producing season-highs of 30 points and 11 assists to go with five rebounds and three-pointers apiece in Toronto’s 113-104 victory on November 6, 2022.

The two-time champion and NBA Finals MVP triggers his backup plan on a strong drive to the basket, first thinking dunk before deciding on a difficult reverse layup to avoid having his attempt swatted by a trailing Kyle Kuzma. Leonard scored in a variety of ways, tallying a game-high 31 points along with nine rebounds and three steals as his LA Clippers staged a fourth-quarter rally to send the Washington Wizards to their ninth-straight loss, a 102-93 decision on December 17, 2022.

Jaren Jackson Jr. made sure that it would be a happy New Year for the Memphis Grizzlies. Kicking off 2023 in style, Jackson Jr. protects the rim with vigor against the Sacramento Kings when he blocks a driving Malik Monk not once but twice. The Grizzlies’ talented fifth-year power forward made magic happen on both ends of the court, tallying 14 points, seven rebounds, two assists and three rejections in helping his squad win its third consecutive game, a 118-108 decision on January 1, 2023.

At just 20 years old and in his second professional season, Jalen Green is fast becoming one of the most dynamic inside-outside threats in the league. Against the Oklahoma City Thunder, Green fearlessly drives right at a pair of promising young talents in Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jalen Williams before finishing with an athletic reverse layup. The Houston Rockets guard poured in a team-high 28 points to go along with two rebounds, nine assists and six three-pointers in his squad’s 118-105 victory on November 26, 2022.

On a night when his Cleveland Cavaliers shot better than 60 percent from the field, Darius Garland was happy to play the role of facilitator. He looks good doing so too, deftly spinning his way around a Philadelphia 76ers defender while catching a pass, then whipping a one-handed laser pass through traffic to a wide-open Dean Wade underneath the basket. Garland deposited 21 points while also adding two rebounds and nine assists in Cleveland’s 113-85 win on November 30, 2022.

Now in his fourth season, Keldon Johnson has blossomed from a very good player into the face of the San Antonio Spurs’ offensive attack. Following a timely dish from teammate Josh Richardson, Johnson takes care of the rest, pump faking a defender out of his shoes before lining up and draining a wide-open corner three-pointer. Johnson scored a team-high 33 points to go with three rebounds, four assists, two steals and six triples in a 129-124 triumph over the Chicago Bulls on October 28, 2022.

Bones Hyland was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team during the 2021-22 season and he’s already raised his game out of the gates in Year 2. The productive Denver Nuggets reserve spins methodically around Golden State Warriors guard Jordan Poole before whipping a one-handed pass to rookie teammate Christian Braun for a layup. Hyland’s energy — as well as his 14 points and five assists — helped propel the Nuggets to an impressive 128-123 victory on October 21, 2022.

The Indiana Pacers All-Star point guard whips up some dazzling dribbles against the Utah Jazz, tricking Kelly Olynyk with a head fake so deceptive that Olynyk drifts several feet toward the basket and allows Haliburton to knock down a wide open three-point attempt. The highlight-reel maneuver was part of a 30-point, 12-assist, three-steal effort from Haliburton in the February 13, 2023 battle.

In the early stages of the 2022-23 season, Devin Vassell is making a case to be one of the league’s breakout players. Beginning his third season with the San Antonio Spurs, the 2020 lottery pick has improved in every facet of his game. Playing on the road against the star-powered Philadelphia 76ers, Vassell shows the opposition that he’s pretty good too, pushing the tempo in transition and somehow finding a way to convert an acrobatic running layup despite being surrounded by three Philly defenders. Vassell was firing on all cylinders all game, connecting on 9 of his 14 shots for 22 points, four rebounds, three assists and four triples in his squad’s 114-105 upset road win on October 22, 2022.

Hosting the Orlando Magic in their first game of the 2022-23 season, Isaiah Stewart showcases an improved confidence in his range. Up by a point in the waning seconds of the contest, Detroit Pistons star Cade Cunningham finds Stewart in the corner, who smoothly sinks the critical long-range bucket. The third-year pro produced 14 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals in a 113-109 Detroit win on October 19, 2022.

Thomas Bryant proves to be adept at turning garbage into gold for the Los Angeles Lakers when a Dennis Schröder triple is off the mark, grabbing the offensive board through sheer force of will and depositing the put-back for a critical two points. Bryant was brilliant against the Sacramento Kings, tallying 29 points on 12 of 14 shooting to go with 14 rebounds in the Lakers’ nail-biting 136-134 victory on January 7, 2023.

The Phoenix Suns have few answers for the Toronto Raptors shooting guard on either end of the floor, as Trent Jr. picks off an errant Torrey Craig pass and is off to the races. Josh Okogie gives chase but Trent Jr. is undeterred, finishing the play with a throwdown that fires up the home crowd. The fifth-year pro matched his season-high with 35 points on top of five rebounds, two assists, three steals and four three-pointers in Toronto’s 113-104 victory on December 30, 2022.

When he’s feeling it from long range, Kevin Love is one of the most feared bench weapons in the NBA. The New York Knicks found that out the hard way, as the five-time All-Star takes a pass on the wing from Donovan Mitchell and buries a contested triple while drawing a foul. Love had a fourth quarter for the ages, connecting on five three-pointers and scoring 16 points as the Cleveland Cavaliers sank the visiting Knicks by out-scoring them by 22 points in the period. All told, Love scored 29 points in just 22 minutes on 8-for-13 from long range while adding eight rebounds in the 121-108 triumph on October 30, 2022.

Murphy III made all eight of his field-goal attempts — including four triples — as well as both free throws en route to 22 points and five rebounds in his squad’s exciting 113-111 win on October 25, 2022.

The New York Knicks’ second-year guard stays ready and alert as Jalen Brunson twists and turns his way into lane before spotting him for a kickout three. After his successful triple, Grimes’ stingy defense changes the trajectory of Trae Young’s shot before Grimes is again rewarded for his efforts — this time by Julius Randle, who draws the Atlanta Hawks’ defense into the paint before passing out to him all alone. The back-to-back triples were two of five made attempts by Grimes, who finished with 23 points, four rebounds, two assists and two blocks in New York’s 113-89 win on December 7, 2022.

The underrated Boston Celtics point guard produced a solid all-around game with 15 points, seven rebounds and 12 assists in his team’s hard-fought 109-106 victory on November 7, 2022.

Locked in a tie game with the Phoenix Suns, the Cleveland Cavaliers’ talented second-year forward puts himself in the right spot to benefit from a Donovan Mitchell drive to the basket. When Mitchell runs into traffic he spots a cutting Mobley, who calmly sinks a 14-foot pullup from just inside the foul line to deliver the Cleveland Cavaliers a thrilling win. D’Angelo Russell has ice in his veins and an even colder handle. Down by two against the Utah Jazz with the fourth quarter clock ticking, the Minnesota Timberwolves guard takes matters into his own hands, putting the ball on the floor with his left hand before sending Mike Conley Jr. to the floor with a stop-and-pop, behind-the-back dribble. From there, all that’s left to do is force overtime, which Russell accomplishes with an open 14-footer with 4.4 seconds remaining. Russell racked up 23 points, five rebounds, seven assists and two steals in the October 21, 2022 overtime battle.
