Against the Los Angeles Sparks on June 27, 2021, the 17-year vet and all-time WNBA scoring leader curls around a high screen, bullies her way into the paint and banks home her iconic 9,000 career point.

It’s not just the size that makes Brionna Jones an impossible check, but the precision with the footwork. The Connecticut Sun forward dives into the paint as a trailer, catches an entry pass in stride then spins on a dime around her defender for an easy hoop.  Jones and company would go on to walk away with the win over the New York Liberty on July 11, 2021.

A well-timed jab step can make or break an open look. New York Liberty guard Sami Whitcomb sizes up her Chicago Sky defender as she handles a pass from a teammate then promptly attacks off the dribble, loses her check with a convincing drive fake and knocks down a step-back triple on May 23, 2021.

Few cover ground with the ball in their hands as quickly as Crystal Dangerfield. With 3.4 seconds on the clock at the end of the third quarter, Dangerfield catches an inbound pass in the backcourt, beelines all the way up the floor through a pair of Washington Mystics defenders, then pulls up for a buzzer-beating heave just past the halfcourt line on June 8, 2021.

When your big can put the ball on the floor at the perimeter and put the help side defense in the spin cycle when she gets to the paint, your squad is in good hands. Isabelle Harrison of the Dallas Wings draws her check out to the three-point line then finesses her way to the hoop for a bucket against the Seattle Storm on May 22, 2021.

Aari McDonald is a revelation with the rock. The Atlanta Dream rookie takes a hand-off at the top of the perimeter, baits her Seattle Storm defender out of position with a series of crossovers, then spins seamlessly into the paint for an acrobatic, underhanded finish on June 11, 2021.

Can’t push the pace without athletes willing and able to run the floor. As playmaking teammate Chelsea Gray quarterbacks a transition attack, Las Vegas Aces forward Dearica Hamby sprints past the last line of Seattle Storm defense, leaps through the air to catch a lead pass, then banks home a bucket as she flies to the baseline on May 18, 2021.

Sylvia Fowles has been holding down the paint for over a decade, no point trying to test her now. The 35-year-old Minnesota Lynx center switches a high pick-and-roll, shadows the ball carrier into the paint then sends the layup attempt packing in a win over the Phoenix Mercury on July 3, 2021.

In case you hadn’t heard, Jonquel Jones is a cheat code. The 6-foot-6 Connecticut Sun MVP candidate attacks her defender off the dribble, backs her into position in the post, then spins seamlessly into a stepback before anyone can adjust. Jones walked away with a cool 14 points and 13 boards in the May 16, 2021 win over the Phoenix Mercury.

Few can create space with the rock as quickly as Kelsey Plum. The Las Vegas Aces point guard gets her defender out of position with a jab step then crosses over back into a step-back triple in a win over the Seattle Storm on May 18, 2021.

Crafty vets live to deceive. Chicago Sky guard Courtney Vandersloot drives her defender into the paint, fakes a pass down to the baseline to get them out of position, then spins around for an easy bucket over the Dallas Wings on July 2, 2021.

Give Courtney Williams a sliver of daylight and she’s getting her shot off, especially with the fate of a game on the line. With seconds remaining in an overtime battle with the New York Liberty, the electric Atlanta Dream guard runs her defender off a teammate’s screen then pulls up for a seamless triple to put her club ahead for good. Williams erupted for 31 points in the May 29, 2021 contest, adding 12 rebounds and seven assists for good measure.

It’s the untouchable footwork that makes Nneka Ogwumike such a problem in the paint. The Los Angeles Sparks forward draws her low-post defender out of position with a ball fake before stepping through for an off-balance hoop against the Dallas Wings. Ogwumike put up 18 total points in the season opener on May 14, 2021.

Living up to lofty expectations as a young star that can do it all means, yes, stepping up when the game is on the line. In her first taste of action after an injury-shortened rookie campaign, New York Liberty guard Sabrina Ionescu executes a sideline inbound play to perfection, racing to grab a hand-off from teammate Kylee Shook and immediately burying a turnaround triple to give her squad a last-second lead over the Indiana Fever on May 14, 2021.

Nothing sends a louder message than a Brittney Griner cram. The Phoenix Mercury center spins out of a screen as teammate Skylar Diggins-Smith draws multiple defenders, then signals for the rock and throws down a one-handed slam along the baseline. Griner dropped 27 points and gathered 16 rebounds in the May 29, 2021 victory over the Dallas Wings.

If there’s a passing lane to a scoring threat out there, expect Sue Bird to find it. The Seattle Storm point god zips a one-handed entry pass to teammate Mercedes Russell for her 3,000th career dime in the WNBA. The No. 1 all-time assist leader reached the milestone in a July 9, 2021 matchup against the Phoenix Mercury.

When one of the game’s most imposing figures can just as easily put the ball on the string as bury a triple, pack your bags and shut it down. Washington Mystics center Tina Charles catches a swing pass in the corner as the shot clock ticks down, creates separation with a convincing crossover, then pulls up for a three against the Atlanta Dream on June 13, 2021.

When the game is on the line, just feed the ball to the one that lives off big moments. Down a pair in the final seconds of a matchup against the Seattle Storm, battle-tested clutch performer Arike Ogunbowale gathers an inbound pass, creates separation from her check, then buries a high-arcing, game-clinching triple on June 6, 2021.

When a scoring threat breaches the perimeter, the rest of the defense has to take action. Washington Mystics shooting guard Ariel Atkins runs her initial defender off an effective Tina Charles screen before darting through a pair of bodies with a quick crossover, beelining into the paint and kicking out a dime to Sydney Wiese in the corner. Atkins finished with 19 points and five assists in the June 29 matchup against the Connecticut Sun.

Shadowing Chelsea Gray is an unenviable task – especially with the game on the line. Down a point in the final seconds of an overtime matchup against the defending champion Seattle Storm, the Las Vegas Aces guard hits Breanna Stewart with a series of crossovers before pulling up and knocking down the go-ahead jumper that would seal the victory on June 27, 2021.

Getting to the rim is only half the battle — knowing how to finish when you get there is the tough part. Indiana Fever guard Danielle Robinson runs her perimeter defender off a high screen before crossing over the switch and ducking under for an acrobatic layup high off the glass on July 9, 2021. Electric guards keep the defense dancing. After navigating around a high screen out at the perimeter, Erica Wheeler of the Los Angeles Sparks draws the help side away from the passing lane with a crossover, then delivers a one-handed dime to teammate Amanda Zahui B. Wheeler finished with 15 points and five dimes in the July 2, 2021 matchup against the Las Vegas Aces.

When time is in short supply, the quick release is key. Indiana Fever rookie Kysre Gondrezick cuts to the top of the key after a sideline inbound play, calls for a kickout and immediately jacks up a deep triple as the shot clock expires in her squad’s May 25, 2021 contest against the Washington Mystics.

Elite scorers have a feel for putting the ball in the hoop that the rest of us will never understand. Seattle Storm forward and reigning Finals MVP Breanna Stewart ducks baseline to avoid Las Vegas Aces defender Liz Cambage, then banks a tough reverse layup off the top of the backboard and into the net on May 18, 2021. Stewie finished with 26 points and 11 boards in the ball game.

You don’t build out a resume like Candace Parker’s without the ability to do it all on the court. The Chicago Sky star corrals a rebound on one end of the court, quarterbacks a fastbreak, then threads a moving needle to hit Kahleah Copper with a picture-perfect, transition dime so nice you need to see it twice. Parker’s squad would hold on for the June 9, 2021 win over the Indiana Fever.
