In case you hadn’t heard, Jonquel Jones is a cheat code. The 6-foot-6 Connecticut Sun MVP candidate attacks her defender off the dribble, backs her into position in the post, then spins seamlessly into a stepback before anyone can adjust. Jones walked away with a cool 14 points and 13 boards in the May 16, 2021 win over the Phoenix Mercury.

Few can create space with the rock as quickly as Kelsey Plum. The Las Vegas Aces point guard gets her defender out of position with a jab step then crosses over back into a step-back triple in a win over the Seattle Storm on May 18, 2021.

If there’s a passing lane to a scoring threat out there, expect Sue Bird to find it. The Seattle Storm point god zips a one-handed entry pass to teammate Mercedes Russell for her 3,000th career dime in the WNBA. The No. 1 all-time assist leader reached the milestone in a July 9, 2021 matchup against the Phoenix Mercury.

You don’t build out a resume like Candace Parker’s without the ability to do it all on the court. The Chicago Sky star corrals a rebound on one end of the court, quarterbacks a fastbreak, then threads a moving needle to hit Kahleah Copper with a picture-perfect, transition dime so nice you need to see it twice. Parker’s squad would hold on for the June 9, 2021 win over the Indiana Fever.

Nothing sends a louder message than a Brittney Griner cram. The Phoenix Mercury center spins out of a screen as teammate Skylar Diggins-Smith draws multiple defenders, then signals for the rock and throws down a one-handed slam along the baseline. Griner dropped 27 points and gathered 16 rebounds in the May 29, 2021 victory over the Dallas Wings.

See a bucket, get a bucket, repeat. For nearly two decades, Phoenix Mercury guard Diana Taurasi has put on scoring clinics throughout the league and the points add up. Against the Los Angeles Sparks on June 27, 2021, the 17-year vet and all-time WNBA scoring leader curls around a high screen, bullies her way into the paint and banks home her iconic 9,000 career point.

Down a pair in the final seconds of a matchup against the Seattle Storm, battle-tested clutch performer Arike Ogunbowale gathers an inbound pass, creates separation from her check, then buries a high-arcing, game-clinching triple on June 6, 2021.

Los Angeles Sparks center Lisa Leslie hauls in an outlet pass on a fastbreak then heads straight to the rack for the first dunk in WNBA history. Sylvia Fowles has been holding down the paint for over a decade, no point trying to test her now. The 35-year-old Minnesota Lynx center switches a high pick-and-roll, shadows the ball carrier into the paint then sends the layup attempt packing in a win over the Phoenix Mercury on July 3, 2021.

Crafty vets live to deceive. Chicago Sky guard Courtney Vandersloot drives her defender into the paint, fakes a pass down to the baseline to get them out of position, then spins around for an easy bucket over the Dallas Wings on July 2, 2021.

Shadowing Chelsea Gray is an unenviable task – especially with the game on the line. Down a point in the final seconds of an overtime matchup against the defending champion Seattle Storm, the Las Vegas Aces guard hits Breanna Stewart with a series of crossovers before pulling up and knocking down the go-ahead jumper that would seal the victory on June 27, 2021.

No shame in biting on a Candace Parker ball fake when she can do damage from anywhere on the court. The Los Angeles Sparks forward attacks the paint against the Phoenix Mercury, baits renowned shot blocker Brittney Griner into chasing a pump fake, then gracefully spins back into an easy floater for two of her 25 points on September 15, 2013.

It didn't take long for Minnesota Lynx guard Maya Moore to assert herself as a dominant figure at the WNBA level. After pushing the pace up the floor against the Atlanta Dream, the standout rookie drives hard behind the transition defense, cradles the ball as she leaps through the paint, then soars under the hoop for an instant classic reverse layup in Game 1 of the WNBA Finals on Oct. 2, 2011.

When one of the game’s most imposing figures can just as easily put the ball on the string as bury a triple, pack your bags and shut it down. Washington Mystics center Tina Charles catches a swing pass in the corner as the shot clock ticks down, creates separation with a convincing crossover, then pulls up for a three against the Atlanta Dream on June 13, 2021.

It’s the untouchable footwork that makes Nneka Ogwumike such a problem in the paint. The Los Angeles Sparks forward draws her low-post defender out of position with a ball fake before stepping through for an off-balance hoop against the Dallas Wings. Ogwumike put up 18 total points in the season opener on May 14, 2021.

Breanna Stewart has the length and athleticism to do damage any time she sets foot on the court but it’s the scorer’s intuition and touch with the rock that make her an impossible check. The Seattle Storm forward splits a pair of Phoenix Mercury defenders with a behind-the-back dribble, heads straight to the rim, then ducks to avoid the outstretched arms of shotblocker Brittney Griner as she lays in a bucket on May 20, 2018.

Aari McDonald is a revelation with the rock. The Atlanta Dream rookie takes a hand-off at the top of the perimeter, baits her Seattle Storm defender out of position with a series of crossovers, then spins seamlessly into the paint for an acrobatic, underhanded finish on June 11, 2021.

Regardless of the stage or circumstance, Diana Taurasi is a living, breathing bucket. With a ticket to the Finals within reach, the Phoenix Mercury guard sets up to run her defender off a screen before exploding in the opposite direction to bury a scoop shot through contact. Taurasi added 21 points and seven rebounds in the September 26, 2009 tilt against the LA Sparks.

It didn’t take long for Phoenix Mercury rookie Brittney Griner to make her presence felt in her first taste of WNBA action. After gaining control of a Chicago Sky turnover on the sidelines, the 6-foot-9 center drives straight to the hoop for a thundering two-handed slam. The flush was the second of two dunks in Griner’s May 27, 2013 debut.

When a scoring threat breaches the perimeter, the rest of the defense has to take action. Washington Mystics shooting guard Ariel Atkins runs her initial defender off an effective Tina Charles screen before darting through a pair of bodies with a quick crossover, beelining into the paint and kicking out a dime to Sydney Wiese in the corner. Atkins finished with 19 points and five assists in the June 29 matchup against the Connecticut Sun.

Can’t push the pace without athletes willing and able to run the floor. As playmaking teammate Chelsea Gray quarterbacks a transition attack, Las Vegas Aces forward Dearica Hamby sprints past the last line of Seattle Storm defense, leaps through the air to catch a lead pass, then banks home a bucket as she flies to the baseline on May 18, 2021.

Elena Delle Donne has been uncheckable since the beginning. Knotted in the final seconds of a game against the Phoenix Mercury, the Chicago Sky rookie collects a sideline inbound pass, meets resistance from her defender out at the perimeter, posts up, then spins into the paint for a lunging jumper on September 11, 2013. Delle Donne finished with 17 points and six boards in the win.

Electric guards keep the defense dancing. After navigating around a high screen out at the perimeter, Erica Wheeler of the Los Angeles Sparks draws the help side away from the passing lane with a crossover, then delivers a one-handed dime to teammate Amanda Zahui B. Wheeler finished with 15 points and five dimes in the July 2, 2021 matchup against the Las Vegas Aces.

It’s not just the size that makes Brionna Jones an impossible check, but the precision with the footwork. The Connecticut Sun forward dives into the paint as a trailer, catches an entry pass in stride then spins on a dime around her defender for an easy hoop.  Jones and company would go on to walk away with the win over the New York Liberty on July 11, 2021.

Triple. Double. History. Sheryl Swoopes can do it all, so it’s not surprise she’s the one to do it first. The Houston Comets star caps off a transition attack with a casual no-look dime to Cynthia Cooper. Swoopes finished the July 27, 1999 win over the Detroit Shock with 14 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists.

Few cover ground with the ball in their hands as quickly as Crystal Dangerfield. With 3.4 seconds on the clock at the end of the third quarter, Dangerfield catches an inbound pass in the backcourt, beelines all the way up the floor through a pair of Washington Mystics defenders, then pulls up for a buzzer-beating heave just past the halfcourt line on June 8, 2021.

Sue Bird’s court vision is borderline mythical. The iconic Seattle Storm floor general attacks the Connecticut Sun in transition, draws a defender in as she dribbles toward the paint, then offloads a perfectly placed, two-handed feed behind her head to a wide-open Natasha Howard. Bird finished with 11 points and nine dimes in the July 1, 2018 victory.

Give Courtney Williams a sliver of daylight and she’s getting her shot off, especially with the fate of a game on the line. With seconds remaining in an overtime battle with the New York Liberty, the electric Atlanta Dream guard runs her defender off a teammate’s screen then pulls up for a seamless triple to put her club ahead for good. Williams erupted for 31 points in the May 29, 2021 contest, adding 12 rebounds and seven assists for good measure.

A well-timed jab step can make or break an open look. New York Liberty guard Sami Whitcomb sizes up her Chicago Sky defender as she handles a pass from a teammate then promptly attacks off the dribble, loses her check with a convincing drive fake and knocks down a step-back triple on May 23, 2021.

Few make their presence felt in the paint more than Yolanda Griffith. Tied in the final seconds of a ball game, the Sacramento Monarchs center reads the rim perfectly off of a teammate’s missed jumper, nimbly leaps through the key to corral the rebound then drains a game-winning jumper. Griffith added 23 points and 16 boards in the August 10, 1999 win.

If Tina Charles pins you down in the post, it's already too late. After battling for position in the paint, the Connecticut Sun center power dribbles her way into the restricted area, ball fakes her defender a full 360 degrees, then floats in a fading jumper. Charles finished with 22 points and 12 boards in the comeback victory over the Indiana Fever on August 1, 2013.

When time is in short supply, the quick release is key. Indiana Fever rookie Kysre Gondrezick cuts to the top of the key after a sideline inbound play, calls for a kickout and immediately jacks up a deep triple as the shot clock expires in her squad’s May 25, 2021 contest against the Washington Mystics.

She may be known as a world-class defender but Indiana Fever star Tamika Catchings is the complete package. After forcing a turnover on one end of the floor, Catchings motions to take her Phoenix Mercury defender into the corner before spinning powerfully into the paint for two. Catchings put up 13 points and 12 boards in the June 25, 2011 win.

Containing Angel McCoughtry on the perimeter is an unenviable task. The Atlanta Dream forward catches a pass out at the three-point line, immediately neutralizes her defender with a crossover, then attacks through the paint for a contested two. The rookie put up 16 points and added four steals in a win over the Seattle Storm on August 15, 2009.

When your five can hit the gap and catch a dart in stride like a seasoned wide receiver, you know you’ve got a solid one-two combination. Seattle Storm center Lauren Jackson trails teammate Sue Bird as she sets up the team’s offense, then sprints straight to the hoop to corral an entry feed and bank home a layup before the defense even knows what hit them. Jackson put up 11 points in the July 9, 2009 win over the Sacramento Monarchs and added four blocks and three steals for good measure.

Simply watching Nneka Ogwumike go to work with the rock is exhausting enough, good luck trying to check her. The Los Angeles Sparks forward wastes no time taking it straight to the Chicago Sky, facing up her defender down on the baseline before spinning her way into the paint, creating space with an up-fake and banking in a hoop before the opponents even know what hit them. Ogwumike finished with nine points in the August 13, 2013 victory.

Normally forcing the offense into a fadeaway jumper as they fall out of bounds and the clock expires is effective defense. Normally. With time running out in the second quarter of a game against the Tulsa Shock, San Antonio Silver Stars guard Becky Hammon drives into the corner then launches a high-arcing leaner over the top of the backboard and into the net. In addition to the baseline heroics, Hammon finished with 18 points and five assist in the June 4, 2011 victory.

When your big can put the ball on the floor at the perimeter and put the help side defense in the spin cycle when she gets to the paint, your squad is in good hands. Isabelle Harrison of the Dallas Wings draws her check out to the three-point line then finesses her way to the hoop for a bucket against the Seattle Storm on May 22, 2021.

It takes a special level of poise to raise the roof in a conference championship-clinching matchup. Cynthia Cooper just happens to have poise in spades. The Houston Comets legend patiently walks her defender off a teammate’s screen then pulls up from beyond the arc in a win over the Los Angeles Sparks on August 30, 1999. Cooper finished the game with 23 points, 12 dimes and, yes, her iconic late-90s celebration.

Imposing scorers wreak havoc on the defense and the chaos works to their advantage. Minnesota Lynx wing Seimone Augustus faces up with the ball out on the perimeter, shimmies her check out of position with a crossover, then penetrates through the paint for a tough floater over the help-side. Augustus finished with 21 points in the August 2, 2011 win over the Phoenix Mercury.

When Cappie Pondexter is set on getting to the rim, attempts to stop her are merely wishful thinking. The New York Liberty guard runs her check off a screen out at the perimeter, crosses over the switch, beelines into the paint then goes up and under a help-side swat attempt for a layup on the far side of the rim. Pondexter put up 17 points in the June 5, 2013 win over the Indiana Fever.

Getting to the rim is only half the battle — knowing how to finish when you get there is the tough part. Indiana Fever guard Danielle Robinson runs her perimeter defender off a high screen before crossing over the switch and ducking under for an acrobatic layup high off the glass on July 9, 2021. Even when running at full throttle, Minnesota Lynx guard Lindsay Whalen can turn on a dime. The floor general wastes no time sprinting up the court, baiting a defender with a move to the right then spinning seamlessly in the other direction for a fastbreak layup. Whalen walked away from the July 19, 2013 win over the San Antonio Stars with 21 points and seven assists.

Knowing how to finish through contact is a necessary trick in any scorer’s bag. Detroit Shock rookie Swin Cash runs the floor for teammate Deanna Nolan, leaps into a catch in the paint then powers through a defender for a tough and-1. Cash dropped 24 points and 14 boards on the Cleveland Rockers in the August 3, 2002 win.

The toughest deep threats to check are the ones with the quickest releases. Detroit Shock wing Katie Smith races to her spot in transition against the New York Liberty then pulls up for a triple before the defense can set up. Smith finished with 16 points in the August 4, 2009 win.

Stretch-four pioneer Tina Thompson does it all with the rock - it's on the defense to try and keep up. After catching a pass out on the perimeter, the Houston Comets forward makes her defender pay for closing out too aggressively, puts the ball on the floor and takes it straight to the cup for two. Thompson finished with 12 points and six boards in the July 29, 1999 win over the Cleveland Rockers.
