An unprecedented combination of fanfare, hype and media coverage has made Victor Wembanyama one of the most highly anticipated prospects in NBA history. Undaunted by the attention, the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft has done nothing but assure San Antonio Spurs fans that the franchise is in good hands so far. In the first regular season game of his career, Wembanyama seizes the opportunity to etch his name in the scoring column, stepping into a catch-and-shoot triple with 8:24 on the clock in the first quarter. Wembanyama finished his October 25, 2023 debut with 15 points, five rebounds and two steals.

A tantalizing combination of skill and size since the moment he appeared on the basketball radar, Chet Holmgren’s NBA debut with the Oklahoma City Thunder did not disappoint. Checked by a veteran big in the corner, Holmgren feigns a post move before pivoting into a picturesque turnaround jumper. Holmgren finished his October 25, 2023 debut with 11 points, four boards and three assists.

An electric package of athleticism and offense, Scoot Henderson is well-equipped to take the reins of the Portland Trail Blazers’ new backcourt. The No. 3 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft flashes a sign of the production to come with a quick-release – and borderline untouchable – floater for the first basket of his NBA career. Henderson finished his October 25, 2023 debut with 11 points and four assists.

Expected to showcase the silky smooth offensive game and poise he showed off at Alabama eventually, Brandon Miller wasted little time answering the call as early as Day 1. Embroiled in a close game against a division rival, Miller fuels a strong Charlotte Hornets finish with an unguardable stepback triple in the fourth quarter. Miller’s contributions -- 13 points, including eight in the final frame -- were essential in his squad’s opening night victory on October 25, 2023.

Any time he sets foot on the court, Amen Thompson puts pressure on the defense. After running his own defender off a high screen beyond the arc, the No. 4 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft drives straight to the cup, catches a help-side defender off-guard and throws down a memorable first dunk. The Houston Rockets rookie finished the October 25, 2023 debut contest with eight points and five rebounds.

Relentless on the glass and defensive end, Ausar Thompson didn’t waste time leaving an impression on his new ball club. Just minutes into his first regular season game with the Detroit Pistons, Thompson deflects a Tyler Herro shot attempt off the backboard. Thompson finished his debut contest on October 25, 2023 with four points, seven rebounds and five blocks.

Back in action for the first time since winning the 2023 NBA championship, Nikola Jokić picked up right where he left off. As comfortable dominating in the paint as ever, Jokić tips an entry pass to himself, gathers possession then finishes with an untouchable push shot. Jokić finished the opening night rematch of last year’s Western Conference Finals with a 29-point, 13-rebound, 11-assist triple double. Jokić and the Nuggets received their rings and raised their banner prior to the October 24, 2023 contest.

A budding star whose versatility is impossible to miss, Scottie Barnes is ready to take his game to the next level in Year 3. Alert under the hoop as Naz Reid penetrates a Toronto Raptors zone, Barnes emerges as the last line of defense to blow up a dunk attempt. Unsatisfied with the defensive stop, Barnes sets out in transition to facilitate a OG Anunoby fastbreak on the opposite end. Barnes finished the October 25, 2023 win with 17 points, eight rebounds, five assists, two steals and five blocks.

Given the opportunity, Cam Thomas is going to score the basketball. Faced with an opportunity to deliver in the final minute of a tight ball game, Thomas teases his defender with a series of crossovers before stepping back into a jump shot that puts pressure on the opponents. The Brooklyn Nets would come up short in the October 27, 2023 tilt but Thomas racked up 30 points on an efficient 12 of 19 shooting in the effort.

Notoriously evasive with the ball in his hands, D’Angelo Russell has an elite ability to freeze defenders. Picked up in transition, Russell attacks down the floor and into the paint, displaces his defender with a series of in-and-out dribbles, then lays the ball in for an easy two. Russell finished the October 26, 2023 Los Angeles Lakers victory with 13 points and five assists.

When shooters build confidence, the whole building will know. After corralling a rebound under the Washington Wizards’ hoop, third-year wing Corey Kispert proceeds down the floor, dips around a flanking teammate then buries a pull-up transition triple. Kispert’s trey – three of his 22 first-half points in the October 28, 2023 win –  was money the minute it left his fingertips.

In his first taste of action in nine months and just his 12th game over a three-year span, Jonathan Isaac showed he’s as imposing a defensive threat as ever. Eyeing up a Jalen Green drive attempt from the opposite side of the paint, Isaac shuffles over as a help-side defender and extinguishes a well-intentioned layup. The 26-year-old, who’s faced nothing but adversity since the 2019-20 campaign, impressed in the Orlando Magic season opener, scoring 11 points and grabbing four rebounds.

Andre Drummond has a particular set of skills and let loose in the open floor he’s happy to show them off. Not one traditionally associated with leading the break, the 12th-year big man creates an opportunity to do just that, picking rookie Chet Holmgren’s pocket on one end, then racing down the floor, breaking him off with a crossover and finishing at the hoop. Drummond finished with six points and five rebounds in the October 25, 2023 Chicago Bulls opener.

Test NBA bigs at your own risk - every year new rookies break into the league and learn this lesson the hard way. Quick to recover after an LA Clippers turnover, Ivica Zubac heads to the paint, picks up a streaking Scoot Henderson and pins his layup off the backboard. Zubac didn’t disappoint in the October 25, 2023 season opener, dropping 20 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks.

Checked with his back to the basket along the baseline, Looney draws his defender away from the post then blows past him into the paint for a two-handed slam. Positioned in the corner after a Dallas Mavericks timeout, Powell waits for a kick out pass from a driving Kyrie Irving then buries a go-ahead, fourth-quarter triple. Powell went 4-for-4 from the field for 11 points in the October 27, 2023 victory.

Moving off-ball is more art than science and Duncan Robinson is an artist. Working in a halfcourt set, Robinson dishes off to the top of the perimeter, fakes a ball screen, then zips past his unassuming defender for a perfectly executed backdoor cut. Through craftiness and his shooter’s touch, Robinson racked up 15 points in the Miami Heat’s season opener on October 25, 2023.

Clinical and precise in the pursuit of scoring opportunities, CJ McCollum can get to his spots. Probing veteran defender Derrick Rose out on the perimeter, McCollum lunges into the paint after a series of crossovers then buries an unblockable runner off the glass. McCollum finished the October 25, 2023 contest with 24 points and six assists for the New Orleans Pelicans.

A 12-year-veteran who hangs his hat on an ability to defend and shoot threes, Jae Crowder’s contributions to the Milwaukee Bucks never get old. After hounding a Philadelphia 76ers ball carrier on one end of the floor and ultimately forcing a turnover, Crowder runs in transition and buries a catch-and-shoot three. Crowder finished with nine points and two steals in the early season victory on October 26, 2023.

On a roster loaded with stars, the role of critical rotation players like Josh Okogie cannot be understated. Patient in the corner as the Phoenix Suns battle down to the wire, Okogie spreads the Golden State Warriors defense, catches a skip pass from Devin Booker and buries a clutch three-pointer. Okogie racked up 17 points on 7 of 9 shooting in the narrow October 24, 2023 victory.

Ever a threat to posterize defenders and never afraid of the moment, Harrison Barnes is a highlight waiting to happen. Capitalizing on the gravity of Sacramento Kings teammate Domantas Sabonis, Barnes ditches his perimeter defender, cuts backdoor to receive a pass, then yams a dunk on the opposite side of the net. The bucket was one of many for the 12-year-veteran who finished with 33 points in the October 25, 2023 season opener after racking up 27 in the first half alone.
