The legend of Jayson Tatum continues to grow. Now in his sixth season, the reigning All-NBA First Team selection leaves little doubt that he was born for the biggest moments. With his Boston Celtics facing a two-point deficit in the final seconds of a game against the Cleveland Cavaliers, Tatum showcases the ice in his veins when he takes a bounce pass from Marcus Smart and drives into the lane with one goal in mind — tie the game. Tatum does just that, throwing down an emphatic slam over Jarrett Allen with 6.7 seconds remaining to send the game to overtime. Tatum finished the November 2, 2022 contest with 26 points, 12 rebounds, six assists and four blocks.

Double-digit deficits mean nothing when Donovan Mitchell is in the building. With his Cleveland Cavaliers down as many as 15 points in the first half against the Boston Celtics, Mitchell cuts that number to nine with a third-quarter pump fake behind the arc leading to a ferocious slam over the 7-foot-2 Luke Kornet. Mitchell helped bring his new squad all the way back thanks to a Herculean effort of 41 points, four rebounds, three assists and five three-pointers in the 132-123 overtime victory on October 28, 2022.

Twelve games into a surprisingly hot start to the season, Talen Horton-Tucker and the Utah Jazz are showing zero signs of slowing down. Hosting the Los Angeles Lakers, Horton-Tucker shows no mercy against his former squad when he takes a bounce pass from Mike Conley behind the arc and motors toward the hoop for a rim-shaker on a helpless help-side defender. Horton-Tucker was part of a bench unit that dropped 56 points on the Lakers, and the fourth-year guard had 15 of his own — along with three rebounds, assists and steals apiece — in Utah’s dominant 139-116 win on November 7, 2022.

Anything you can do, Josh Hart can do better. Following a game-tying triple from Miami Heat forward Max Strus with 6.2 seconds left in regulation, Hart and the Portland Trail Blazers didn’t flinch, especially knowing they had won a game on a final possession just days earlier. Damian Lillard takes the inbound pass and races coast-to-coast, finding Hart open in the corner for a clean look at a buzzer-beating three-pointer. The versatile wing adds himself to the growing list of Portland’s late-game heroes early on in 2022-23, and his 12 points, nine rebounds, eight assists and two steals were a major catalyst in his squad’s thrilling 110-107 win on November 7, 2022.

The Anfernee Simons breakout campaign is officially underway. Now a full-time starter for the first time in his five professional seasons, Simons rewards the Portland Trail Blazers’ faith in him with an overtime game-winner in the second game of the 2022-23 slate. Deadlocked against the Phoenix Suns in the extra session, Simons knows time is of the essence, driving hard into the paint against the defensively-gifted Mikal Bridges and still finding a way to bury a go-ahead hook shot with 7.2 seconds remaining. Simons’ clutch shot — along with his 16 points, three rebounds, three assists and a steal — were instrumental in Portland’s 113-111 victory, allowing the Blazers to begin the new season 2-0.

The San Antonio Spurs have always gravitated toward unselfish offensive players who bring a gritty intensity to the defensive end. Jeremy Sochan fits the blueprint like a glove and is already fitting seamlessly into the Spurs’ system. With the ball in his hands, Sochan passes off to a teammate before dropping down into the post and immediately taking it back to deposit for an and-one opportunity at the rim. The rookie forward made a solid first impression, posting four points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals against the Charlotte Hornets on October 19, 2022.

You’ll never forget your first field goal in the NBA, so go ahead and make it as memorable as possible. Second-round draft pick Christian Koloko immediately showcases his hustle and court awareness for the Toronto Raptors, dutifully tracking teammate Pascal Siakam’s path to the basket and throwing down a monstrous putback dunk when the shot rims out. Koloko scored three points while adding six rebounds and a block in 15 energetic minutes off the bench in Toronto’s 108-105 opening-night win over the Cleveland Cavaliers on October 19, 2022.

A healthy Anthony Davis is double trouble for the opposition. Playing in his first game since an injury forced him to shut it down early a season ago, Davis proves just how scary he can be against the defending champion Golden State Warriors. First, the eight-time All-Star deposits a difficult floater off an inbound pass, then uses all of his lengthy 6-foot-10 frame to pick off a lazy Steph Curry pass on the ensuing trip up the floor. Davis then beats everyone in a race to the hoop, dropping in a layup while absorbing contact for an and-one opportunity. The Warriors won the game, but Los Angeles Lakers fans have to be feeling good about Davis’ 27-point, six-rebound, four-steal effort on October 18, 2022.

Trailing by three points with 1.3 seconds remaining in regulation, Matt Ryan was subbed into the game with one objective — tie the ballgame. Mission accomplished for the Los Angeles Lakers newcomer. Off a perfectly-executed inbound pass from Austin Reaves, the sharpshooting Ryan, in his Top Shot debut, has just enough time to set his feet and force overtime with a corner three-pointer directly in front of the Lakers’ bench. Ryan played a critical role for the Lakers in just his sixth career game, chipping in 11 points, two rebounds, an assist and three triples in a much-needed 120-117 win over the New Orleans Pelicans on November 2, 2022.

As Shai Gilgeous-Alexander adds different elements to his game, his impact grows with it. Now in his fifth season and developing into one of the most electrifying young talents in the NBA, the Oklahoma City Thunder guard showcases his skills on both sides of the ball against the visiting LA Clippers. First, Gilgeous-Alexander teams up with Mike Muscala to reject a Clippers shot before leading the counterattack on offense. He finishes the possession taking on two defenders, spinning around both en route to a smooth kiss off the glass. Gilgeous-Alexander erupted for a game-high 33 points along with five rebounds, eight assists, three steals and three blocks in the Thunder’s 108-94 victory on October 25, 2022.

New season, same old Damian Lillard. The six-time All-Star is already in midseason form in the early stages of his 11th season with the Portland Trail Blazers, breaking the hearts of opposing teams thanks to his impeccably clutch shooting. Against the high-powered Phoenix Suns, Lillard does what he does best, using a dizzying array of dribbles as he hunts for his shot. Multiple defenders give chase to no avail, as Lillard unleashes a 20-footer with a high degree of difficulty that finds its home in the bottom of the net. It was the 41st time in Lillard’s career that he exploded for 40 or more in a game, extinguishing the Suns with 41 points, seven rebounds and three assists in Portland’s 113-111 overtime victory on October 21, 2022.

Tyrese Haliburton was a revelation in 26 games for the Indiana Pacers after a midseason acquisition in February 2022. To the delight of Pacers fans, the talented third-year point guard has picked up right where he left off to open the 2022-23 season. In Indiana’s first game against the Washington Wizards, Haliburton pushes the ball up the court and takes on all comers, using a yo-yo-dribble-hesi combination to fool the defense before clearing a path to the rim and throwing down a dunk. Haliburton scored a game-high 26 points to go with four rebounds and seven assists on October 19, 2022.

Now that’s how you announce your presence to the rest of the league. A year after averaging just three points per game in less than eight minutes a night, Nick Richards has burst on to the scene for the Charlotte Hornets in the early stages of the 2022-23 season. After erupting for 19 points and 10 rebounds in the season opener, the reserve center one-ups himself against the Atlanta Hawks. Executing a flawless pick-and-roll with fellow reserve James Bouknight, Richards takes a bounce pass from his teammate and rises up for an emphatic one-handed slam. It was a perfect game for Richards, who made all nine of his field goal attempts in a 20-point, 11-rebound, two-block effort in 20 efficient minutes in Charlotte’s 126-109 win on October 23, 2022.

Even when you send a double team Trae Young’s way, he still finds ways to beat you. When two Detroit Pistons converge behind the arc to prevent him from bombing a triple, the two-time All-Star does the next best thing and whips a no-look pass into the post to Clint Capela, who converts the layup attempt while drawing a foul. Young’s elite ability to make any shot or pass makes him nearly impossible to defend, as his 36 points, two rebounds, 12 assists and four triples were enough to sink the Pistons 136-112 on October 28, 2022.

As the LA Clippers were quick to discover, fancy footwork in the frontcourt is no fun to defend. Now in his second season, Houston Rockets center Alperen Şengün continues to impress — after setting a screen for a teammate, the 6-foot-11 Turkish big man collapses toward the basket and catches a pass in the paint before pivoting around his defender with a nimble spin move. The subsequent layup was good for two of Şengün’s team-high 26 points, and he also chipped in 13 rebounds, two assists and a steal in the November 2, 2022 Western Conference showdown.

After a slow start to the 2022-23 season, the Orlando Magic turned to a fresh face with a unique basketball arsenal to help stop the bleeding. After three seasons with the Denver Nuggets where he was used sparingly, Bol Bol has been unleashed as an important part of the Magic’s present and future. Against the Charlotte Hornets, the spindly 7-foot-2 center catches a pass in the corner and puts the ball on the floor, exhibiting an impressive handle before letting his otherworldly frame do the rest as he launches himself toward the rim and throws down a ferocious slam. Bol’s impact has increased with more playing time, as he contributed 11 points and seven rebounds in 27 minutes in Orlando’s 113-93 win on October 28, 2022.

There’s efficiency… and then there’s Grant Williams. As his Boston Celtics opened the 2022-23 campaign defending their Eastern Conference crown, Williams brought with him some of last season’s magic. Coming off the bench against the rival Philadelphia 76ers, Williams refused to miss, pump faking Shake Milton out of his sneakers while sinking a corner three-pointer. Williams made all five of his field goal attempts — including three triples — along with a rebound and assist in Boston’s 126-117 victory on October 18, 2022.

For the 20th time in his decorated career, Paul George did something most NBA players won’t sniff even once — score 40 points in a game. Against the Sacramento Kings, the seven-time All-Star enters total domination mode, taking a pass atop the key before stepping on the accelerator and hitting the defense with an unguardable spin move en route to two of his 40. The LA Clippers needed every one of them to get past the pesky Kings, as George’s 40 points, six rebounds, six assists and two steals were the difference in the 111-109 road win on October 22, 2022. The output made George the 14th active player to score 40 or more in a game at least 20 times.

It’s safe to say that Kentavious Caldwell-Pope is enjoying his new surroundings in the Mile High City. It’s not difficult to understand why, given Caldwell-Pope is now playing with the Denver Nuggets and two-time MVP Nikola Jokić. Against the Oklahoma City Thunder, Jokić is confronted by a double team, forcing the gifted distributor to sling a cross-court bounce pass to Caldwell-Pope in the corner for a triple that would turn into a four-point play. The 10-year veteran was firing on all cylinders, posting 21 points, with six three-pointers, five rebounds and two assists in Denver’s 122-117 win on October 22, 2022.

Now in his fourth season, Keldon Johnson has blossomed from a very good player into the face of the San Antonio Spurs’ offensive attack. Following a timely dish from teammate Josh Richardson, Johnson takes care of the rest, pump faking a defender out of his shoes before lining up and draining a wide-open corner three-pointer. Johnson scored a team-high 33 points to go with three rebounds, four assists, two steals and six triples in a 129-124 triumph over the Chicago Bulls on October 28, 2022.

Bones Hyland was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team during the 2021-22 season and he’s already raised his game out of the gates in Year 2. The productive Denver Nuggets reserve spins methodically around Golden State Warriors guard Jordan Poole before whipping a one-handed pass to rookie teammate Christian Braun for a layup. Hyland’s energy — as well as his 14 points and five assists — helped propel the Nuggets to an impressive 128-123 victory on October 21, 2022.

When he’s feeling it from long range, Kevin Love is one of the most feared bench weapons in the NBA. The New York Knicks found that out the hard way, as the five-time All-Star takes a pass on the wing from Donovan Mitchell and buries a contested triple while drawing a foul. Love had a fourth quarter for the ages, connecting on five three-pointers and scoring 16 points as the Cleveland Cavaliers sank the visiting Knicks by out-scoring them by 22 points in the period. All told, Love scored 29 points in just 22 minutes on 8-for-13 from long range while adding eight rebounds in the 121-108 triumph on October 30, 2022.

Playing without two of their top scorers, the New Orleans Pelicans needed to play flawless basketball to beat the Dallas Mavericks. Trey Murphy III took the challenge literally. Pressed into starting duty, the second-year guard stepped up in a big way, taking a pass in the corner before making his move toward the basket and throwing down a ferocious slam. Murphy III made all eight of his field-goal attempts — including four triples — as well as both free throws en route to 22 points and five rebounds in his squad’s exciting 113-111 win on October 25, 2022.

After a midseason trade brought him from the Phoenix Suns to the Indiana Pacers in Feb. 2022, Jalen Smith’s scoring average more than doubled, jumping from six per game to better than 13 in 22 games. With the 2022-23 season underway, Smith is here to say there’s plenty more where that came from. Detroit Pistons rookie Jaden Ivey receives a rude awakening when he attempts to put Smith on a poster, as the Pacers big man denies Ivey with a ferocious block at the rim. Smith produced a dominant performance — 19 points, 15 rebounds and three blocks to help Indiana win its first game of the season, a 124-115 triumph on October 22, 2022.

Even in Year 14, Wesley Matthews hasn’t lost his magic touch. The Milwaukee Bucks guard has always been a marksman from deep and has settled in as a dependable role player for a team with championship aspirations. Trailing by two with less than a minute remaining against the Philadelphia 76ers in Milwaukee’s 2022-23 opener, Matthews puts his clutch gene on display, burying a go-ahead triple with under 25 seconds remaining to silence the hostile Philly crowd. Matthews had eight points, five rebounds, two assists and a block in 20 minutes off the bench in the 90-88 win on October 20, 2022.

It appears that Damion Lee brought his clutch championship form with him to the desert. In his first game with the Phoenix Suns after a four-year run with the Golden State Warriors, Lee makes Suns fans elated that he’s on their side. Tied in the final seconds of a fourth-quarter battle, Lee takes a pass from three-time All-Star Devin Booker and makes his move, driving with determination toward the basket and draining a difficult game-winning fall-away jumper with 9.7 seconds left. Lee scored 11 points off the bench — all in the fourth quarter — to go with two rebounds and two assists in helping the Suns erase a 22-point third-quarter deficit to stun the Dallas Mavericks 107-105 on October 19, 2022.

A 7-foot-3 basketball unicorn with slick handles and long-range touch? Welcome to the 2022-23 season. After arriving in a trade the previous season, Kristaps Porziņģis played just 17 games with the Washington Wizards, showing that unique blend of talent that made him the fourth pick of the 2015 draft. Porziņģis is clearly having fun in his first full season in D.C., taking a pass well behind the three-point arc preparing to unleash his magic. The big man makes a Chicago Bulls defender look absolutely foolish, first with a pump fake, then with an ankle-breaking crossover and long-range triple. Porziņģis tallied 14 points, three rebounds, two assists, two blocks and a steal in Washington’s 102-100 triumph on October 21, 2022.

After arriving via trade in Jan. 2022, a shoulder injury cut Cam Reddish’s run with the New York Knicks short after just 15 games. Now that he’s healthy again, the rest of the league better watch out. Against the Memphis Grizzlies in New York’s first game of the 2022-23 season, Reddish wastes little time reintroducing himself to the basketball world, drifting into the corner to catch a pass from Jalen Brunson and sinking a contested three-pointer with three seconds left in regulation to force overtime. Although the Knicks lost the game, the Big Apple was surely buzzing after Reddish put up 22 points, five rebounds, three steals and a block on 9-of-15 shooting off the bench in the October 19, 2022 battle.

It’s no secret that the Brooklyn Nets have plenty of star power but the true strength of any team with lofty expectations comes from its depth. Enter Royce O’Neale, who joined the Nets after spending his first five seasons as a role player with the Utah Jazz. Clinging to a one-point lead in the waning seconds of the fourth quarter, O’Neale takes a pass from Kyrie Irving on the wing and calmly buries a 25-foot dagger to sink the Toronto Raptors and deliver Brooklyn its first victory of the 2022-23 season. O’Neale scattered seven points, four rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks in the 109-105 triumph on October 21, 2022.

The 2022-23 Minnesota Timberwolves were designed to win by the strength of their star-laden starting lineup — which makes the continued progression of Jaylen Nowell a most welcome surprise. Playing with raised confidence against the San Antonio Spurs, Nowell takes a pass at the top of the key and immediately turns on the jets toward the basket before taking flight and throwing down a backboard-shaking slam. The fourth-year reserve guard made a tremendous impact, tallying 23 points, four rebounds and two assists in 22 minutes off the bench in Minnesota’s 134-122 victory on October 26, 2022.

A new year brings with it fresh opportunities to exorcize old demons. Goga Bitadze and the Indiana Pacers dropped their final 10 games of the preceding season, riding a months-long losing streak that stretched to 12 after falling in their first two games of the 2022-23 campaign. In one play, Bitadze says out with the old, in with the new as he’s set up with a perfect alley-oop from exciting rookie teammate Bennedict Mathurin, taking out his frustrations on the rim with an effortless one-handed slam against the Detroit Pistons. Bitadze had a monster performance with 14 points, 15 rebounds and four assists off the bench, helping Indiana earn that long-awaited 124-115 victory on October 22, 2022.

Primarily a starter his final three seasons with the Denver Nuggets, Will Barton was a revelation off the bench in his first game with his new squad. Now a member of the Washington Wizards, the 11-year veteran wastes little time making a positive impression on his teammates. Following a steal on the defensive end, Barton leads the counterattack while surveying his options. Spotting Daniel Gafford sneaking into the paint, Barton threads the needle with an unselfish no-look dish and Gafford does the rest, putting a Pacers defender on a poster with an impressive one-handed slam. Barton debuted with 14 points, two rebounds and three assists in helping his team prevail 114-107 on October 19, 2022.

With a tenuous grip on a one-point lead and the clock dwindling, it was Austin Rivers’ dagger to fire. Game, set, match. When Anthony Edwards finds Rivers with a cross-court pass, the 11-year veteran has few options left but to let it fly. After a few seconds to gather his courage, Rivers rises up over Eugene Omoruyi and nails the back-breaking triple to give the Minnesota Timberwolves a four-point lead they would not surrender. Rivers was huge for his squad, posting 20 points on 6 of 7 shooting — including 4 of 5 from downtown — adding three rebounds and five steals in the 112-110 win on December 16, 2022.
