2023 NBA All-Star Weekend - First Timers 

Anthony Edwards’ journey from first overall pick in the NBA Draft to All-Star took less than three seasons. The Minnesota Timberwolves guard loudly announces his presence to the Salt Lake City crowd with the help of Team LeBron teammate Tyrese Haliburton, who threads the needle through two defenders with a bounce pass to Edwards for a two-handed throwdown. Edwards — who averaged 24.9 points per game in the first half of the season as the youngest All-Star on either roster — converted 6 of 8 field goal attempts for 12 points while adding four rebounds in 16 minutes on February 19, 2023 and will now turn his attention to the second half, where he and the Timberwolves hope to clinch their second consecutive postseason berth.

After a couple of seasons spent near the bottom of the Western Conference standings, first-time All-Star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has the Oklahoma City Thunder competing for a playoff berth in 2023. It’s easy to understand why, as the dynamic playmaker makes a big impact for Team Giannis in only 10 minutes, using a slick behind-the-back, through-the-legs handle to get past Jaren Jackson Jr. before finishing with a slam. Gilgeous-Alexander — who entered the break fifth in the league in scoring at 30.8 points per game — made four of his five shots for nine points while also dishing out seven assists in his squad’s 184-175 All-Star Game win over Team LeBron on February 19, 2023.

The 2022-23 campaign has been a rebirth for the Sacramento Kings, who finished the first half in third place in the Western Conference atop the Pacific Division. The franchise was rewarded with a pair of All-Stars, including sixth-year point guard De’Aaron Fox’s first selection. Playing for Team LeBron on February 19, 2023, Fox picks up one of his two assists in the contest when he whips a crosscourt laser of a bounce pass to teammate Jaren Jackson Jr., who finishes with a dunk. Fox — in the top-20 in both points and assists per game — and the Kings will look to clinch the franchise’s first postseason berth since 2006 with a strong second-half finish.

There’s no place like home — especially for first-time All-Star Lauri Markkanen. The sixth-year forward’s career has been reinvigorated following an offseason trade to the Utah Jazz, culminating in a start for Team Giannis at his home arena in Salt Lake City after averaging 24.9 points per game during the first half of the season. Markkanen is all smiles for the occasion, treating the crowd to a reverse throwdown as part of his 13-point, seven-rebound effort in 26 minutes as he helped Team Giannis to a 184-175 victory over Team LeBron in the NBA All-Star Game on February 19, 2023.

Lauri Markkanen

Tyrese Haliburton ranks fourth in the NBA with 10.1 assists per game — but if there was ever a time to be selfish, the All-Star Game is it. The Indiana Pacers point guard is on the receiving end of a bounce pass from Team LeBron teammate Kyrie Irving, and Haliburton gets into the paint with a crossover dribble before finishing with a powerful one-handed throwdown. The third-year pro — who also averaged just under 20 points per game in the first half — finished 7 of 9 from the field and 4 for 6 from downtown en route to 18 points in just 14 minutes while adding three assists on February 19, 2023.

Tyrese Haliburton

One season ago, Jaren Jackson Jr. led the NBA in blocks while being named to the All-Defensive First Team — now, he’s a first-time All-Star. The Memphis Grizzlies’ fifth-year forward — again leading the league in blocks in 2022-23 — trades defense for offense as his first bucket in an NBA All-Star Game is a running dunk that he throws down with his left hand. Jackson Jr. scored six points on 3-for-4 shooting in his eight minutes for Team LeBron on February 19, 2023, with he and Grizzlies teammate Ja Morant becoming the first All-Star duo in franchise history with the team sitting in second place in the Western Conference heading into the second half.
