The Orlando Magic were the 12-time All-Star’s latest victim, as Durant picks them apart in a variety of ways — on offense, he reaches into his bag of tricks for a one-handed floater off the glass, a spot-up triple, a dribble-drive into a baseline fall-away jumper and an open mid-range shot off a behind-the-back maneuver. The two-time champion and Finals MVP comes up big on the defensive end as well, turning a rebound into a long outlet dish to Joe Harris while also blocking a shot and picking Franz Wagner’s pocket at halfcourt en route to a slam. When it was over, Durant lit Orlando up for 45 points on 19-of-24 shooting while also chipping in seven rebounds, five assists, two steals and two blocks in the 109-102 win on November 28, 2022.

As far as NBA debuts go, Paolo Banchero’s was one of the best. The Orlando Magic’s No. 1 pick won’t soon forget his first game against the Detroit Pistons, and neither will Cory Joseph after Banchero put the 12-year veteran on a poster with a demonstrative dunk. Banchero made 11 of his 18 field goal attempts for 27 points, nine rebounds, five assists and two blocks, cementing one of the best debuts from a No. 1 pick in the past half-century. The Pistons won the October 19, 2022 game, but the Magic left Motown feeling fantastic about their new franchise cornerstone.

Kawhi Leonard’s return to the lineup following a two-week absence was just what the doctor ordered for the LA Clippers. After tying the tight battle at 117 on the prior play, the two-time champion and Finals MVP stuck a dagger in the Charlotte Hornets on his squad’s next possession. Leonard grabs an inbound pass on the wing before taking one dribble and draining a step-back jumper over the outstretched fingertips of Jalen McDaniels. The always-clutch five-time All-Star tallied 16 points, six rebounds and two assists in the Clippers’ 119-117 win on December 5, 2022.

Despite not suiting up during his lone college campaign last season, Shaedon Sharpe was more than ready for his NBA debut. The Portland Trail Blazers’ prized rookie shows no evidence of rust against the Sacramento Kings, casually shaking off his defender and draining a corner triple off an inbound pass. Sharpe made a major impact in just 16 minutes off the bench, scoring 12 points — shooting 3-for-3 on three-pointers — and adding two rebounds in a 115-108 win on October 19, 2022.

In a Christmas Day matchup with the rival LA Clippers, the young Golden State Warriors star tracks Chris Paul beyond the arc and chases him all the way to the hoop to swat a layup attempt. Superstars shine brighter on Christmas Day. In a blockbuster matchup with the New York Knicks, Boston Celtics big Kevin Garnett shuffles into the paint and calls for a pass from teammate Ray Allen. Catching the ball in mid-air, Garnett acts decisively dishing a behind-the-back dime to Jermaine O’Neal at the rim. Garnett had 15 points and eight boards on December 25, 2011.

Steph Curry’s shooting and scoring abilities get their just praise — but how about some love for the way the Golden State Warriors star gets his buckets? Granted an opportunity to strike from the corner, Curry sets his sight on the rim, splitting two defenders with a smooth behind-the-back maneuver, then finishes at the cup with a layup. The four-time champion scores two of his game-high 24 points on the play while also chipping in six rebounds, 10 assists, two steals and five triples in his squad’s 111-101 win on November 18, 2022.

A healthy Anthony Davis is double trouble for the opposition. Playing in his first game since an injury forced him to shut it down early a season ago, Davis proves just how scary he can be against the defending champion Golden State Warriors. First, the eight-time All-Star deposits a difficult floater off an inbound pass, then uses all of his lengthy 6-foot-10 frame to pick off a lazy Steph Curry pass on the ensuing trip up the floor. Davis then beats everyone in a race to the hoop, dropping in a layup while absorbing contact for an and-one opportunity. The Warriors won the game, but Los Angeles Lakers fans have to be feeling good about Davis’ 27-point, six-rebound, four-steal effort on October 18, 2022.

On a nightly basis, Nikola Jokić makes the difficult look routine. The two-time reigning MVP has something special planned for the Houston Rockets, catching the ball in the post before burying a turnaround baseline jumper in rhythm on just one foot. The four-time All-Star tormented the Rockets all night, scoring 32 points on 11-of-17 shooting — his third time hitting 30 points in the past four games — while also grabbing 12 rebounds and dishing out eight assists in the Denver Nuggets’ 129-113 victory on November 28, 2022.

Trailing by three points with 1.3 seconds remaining in regulation, Matt Ryan was subbed into the game with one objective — tie the ballgame. Mission accomplished for the Los Angeles Lakers newcomer. Off a perfectly-executed inbound pass from Austin Reaves, the sharpshooting Ryan, in his Top Shot debut, has just enough time to set his feet and force overtime with a corner three-pointer directly in front of the Lakers’ bench. Ryan played a critical role for the Lakers in just his sixth career game, chipping in 11 points, two rebounds, an assist and three triples in a much-needed 120-117 win over the New Orleans Pelicans on November 2, 2022.

When you’re on the court with LeBron James as your teammate, it’s only a matter of time before opportunity knocks. Following a thunderous James rejection of Paul George, Austin Reaves scoops up the loose ball and motors the other way in transition before lobbing a flawless alley-oop pass to Lonnie Walker IV, who finishes the slam to get the home crowd on its feet. Reaves had an effective 22-minute run off the bench, posting four points, four rebounds and two assists in the Los Angeles Lakers’ intra-city rivalry game against the LA Clippers on October 20, 2022.

Tyrese Haliburton was a revelation in 26 games for the Indiana Pacers after a midseason acquisition in February 2022. To the delight of Pacers fans, the talented third-year point guard has picked up right where he left off to open the 2022-23 season. In Indiana’s first game against the Washington Wizards, Haliburton pushes the ball up the court and takes on all comers, using a yo-yo-dribble-hesi combination to fool the defense before clearing a path to the rim and throwing down a dunk. Haliburton scored a game-high 26 points to go with four rebounds and seven assists on October 19, 2022.

In a magical early-season stretch filled with Portland Trail Blazers game-winners, Jerami Grant captured lightning in a bottle twice. With the score tied and precious little time remaining, Grant receives a perfect floater of an inbound pass from Justise Winslow and does the rest himself, hitting an open baseline 13-footer at the buzzer directly in front of the Phoenix Suns’ bench. Grant — who also beat the Los Angeles Lakers with a game-winner on October 23 — lifted the Blazers with a game-high 30 points, along with two rebounds and five assists, in the clutch 108-106 triumph on November 4, 2022.

Jaylen Brown welcomed Donovan Mitchell to the Eastern Conference the best way he knows how — by putting him on a poster. Playing in just his fifth game with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Mitchell receives a rude awakening courtesy of the Boston Celtics’ 2021 All-Star. When Brown picks off a Mitchell bounce pass, he and teammate Marcus Smart motor the other way on a 2-on-1 advantage. Brown collects a bounce pass and then takes flight, slamming an angry one-handed dunk on top of his helpless opponent. Brown put together a solid performance of 32 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals on October 28, 2022.

One year after his breakout campaign, Jordan Poole continues to evolve offensively. Pressed into starting duty for a resting Klay Thompson, the fourth-year guard keeps the Golden State Warriors offense humming with a strong drive into the paint before dropping off a beauty of a behind-the-back no-look pass to a cutting Jonathan Kuminga. Poole’s 21 points, two rebounds, five assists and five three-pointers helped deliver the Warriors a 120-101 win over the Houston Rockets on December 3, 2022.

Scottie Barnes’ ability to impact a game on multiple fronts is what won him the NBA Rookie of the Year award. In Year 2, it’s clear that this is still very much the case. Competing against the Detroit Pistons, Barnes takes a pass in stride while driving into the lane, then drops off a slick one-handed bounce pass while airborne to a cutting Dalano Banton. Barnes’ eight points, five rebounds, four assists, one steal and one block made a major impact in Toronto’s 115-111 victory on November 14, 2022.

In a December 25, 2015 matchup against the Oklahoma City Thunder, Chicago Bulls star Jimmy Butler catches the ball just past halfcourt and pulls up for a deep triple before defender Kevin Durant can get within reach. Butler had a team-high 23 points to go with six boards in the win.

Almost a quarter of the way into the 2022-23 season, one thing has become clear — if Jericho Sims is on the court, he’s probably going to dunk on you. The New York Knicks’ reserve center continues to be his squad’s resident alley-oop recipient, this time against the Utah Jazz as he gets teed up for a perfectly-executed lob from Immanuel Quickley. The second-year big man was strong in 25 productive minutes, making 5-of-7 field-goal attempts for 11 points, while adding 13 rebounds, two assists and a steal in the Knicks’ 118-111 road win on November 15, 2022.

In just his second game back from an injury that caused him to miss all but nine games a year ago, Michael Porter Jr. has opened the 2022-23 season looking very much like his old self. Drawing one of the game’s toughest defensive assignments in Steph Curry, Porter Jr. doesn’t flinch, staying in lockstep with the four-time champion and two-time MVP on his path to the basket, swatting Curry’s shot with authority. Porter Jr. brought it on the offensive end too, contributing 17 points and six rebounds in the Denver Nuggets’ 128-123 road win at the defending champion Golden State Warriors on October 21, 2022.

As the LA Clippers were quick to discover, fancy footwork in the frontcourt is no fun to defend. Now in his second season, Houston Rockets center Alperen Şengün continues to impress — after setting a screen for a teammate, the 6-foot-11 Turkish big man collapses toward the basket and catches a pass in the paint before pivoting around his defender with a nimble spin move. The subsequent layup was good for two of Şengün’s team-high 26 points, and he also chipped in 13 rebounds, two assists and a steal in the November 2, 2022 Western Conference showdown.

Even when you send a double team Trae Young’s way, he still finds ways to beat you. When two Detroit Pistons converge behind the arc to prevent him from bombing a triple, the two-time All-Star does the next best thing and whips a no-look pass into the post to Clint Capela, who converts the layup attempt while drawing a foul. Young’s elite ability to make any shot or pass makes him nearly impossible to defend, as his 36 points, two rebounds, 12 assists and four triples were enough to sink the Pistons 136-112 on October 28, 2022.

It’s a holiday — why not throw a block party? New Orleans Pelicans star-in-the-making Anthony Davis meets Chris Bosh at the rim to reject the future Hall of Famer with a one-handed swat. Davis went off in the Christmas Day fixture with a team high 29 points and 15 rebounds on December 25, 2015.

Having started all but one game he’s played in over the past four seasons, OG Anunoby has become a steadying presence in the Toronto Raptors’ lineup. He can score efficiently and is a world-class defender. When Tobias Harris scoops up a steal and races the other way, Toronto’s sixth-year forward stays in lockstep with him the entire way, timing his jump flawlessly and mercilessly turning away the layup attempt. Anunoby was his usual productive self, contributing 19 points, nine rebounds, two assists, two steals and one emphatic block in the October 28, 2022 showdown.

How’s that for a special delivery? Playing with the Splash Brothers for as long as he has, Draymond Green is more than comfortable getting creative on offense. The Golden State Warriors forward displays both his elite distributing ability and court vision against the Cleveland Cavaliers, corralling a pass on the wing before immediately dropping off a no-look, behind-the-back dish to a trailing Klay Thompson in the same motion. As usual, Green was at the center of everything the Warriors do, posting two points, nine rebounds, 13 assists and a steal in the defending champions’ 106-101 victory on November 11, 2022.

Brook Lopez has no time for Houston Rockets guard Jalen Green’s drive to the hoop, literally ripping the ball out of Green’s hands in his attempt to score and needing only one arm to do so. It was a block party for the Milwaukee Bucks’ 15-year veteran, who swatted five shots in the October 22, 2022 contest. The seven-footer did a little bit of everything for the Bucks — in addition to the five blocks, Lopez scored nine points, grabbed five rebounds, dished out two assists, grabbed two steals and sank a trio of three-pointers in Milwaukee’s runaway 125-105 victory.

There’s efficiency… and then there’s Grant Williams. As his Boston Celtics opened the 2022-23 campaign defending their Eastern Conference crown, Williams brought with him some of last season’s magic. Coming off the bench against the rival Philadelphia 76ers, Williams refused to miss, pump faking Shake Milton out of his sneakers while sinking a corner three-pointer. Williams made all five of his field goal attempts — including three triples — along with a rebound and assist in Boston’s 126-117 victory on October 18, 2022.

It’s safe to say that Kentavious Caldwell-Pope is enjoying his new surroundings in the Mile High City. It’s not difficult to understand why, given Caldwell-Pope is now playing with the Denver Nuggets and two-time MVP Nikola Jokić. Against the Oklahoma City Thunder, Jokić is confronted by a double team, forcing the gifted distributor to sling a cross-court bounce pass to Caldwell-Pope in the corner for a triple that would turn into a four-point play. The 10-year veteran was firing on all cylinders, posting 21 points, with six three-pointers, five rebounds and two assists in Denver’s 122-117 win on October 22, 2022.

Now in his fourth season, Keldon Johnson has blossomed from a very good player into the face of the San Antonio Spurs’ offensive attack. Following a timely dish from teammate Josh Richardson, Johnson takes care of the rest, pump faking a defender out of his shoes before lining up and draining a wide-open corner three-pointer. Johnson scored a team-high 33 points to go with three rebounds, four assists, two steals and six triples in a 129-124 triumph over the Chicago Bulls on October 28, 2022.

On a night when his Cleveland Cavaliers shot better than 60 percent from the field, Darius Garland was happy to play the role of facilitator. He looks good doing so too, deftly spinning his way around a Philadelphia 76ers defender while catching a pass, then whipping a one-handed laser pass through traffic to a wide-open Dean Wade underneath the basket. Garland deposited 21 points while also adding two rebounds and nine assists in Cleveland’s 113-85 win on November 30, 2022.

At just 20 years old and in his second professional season, Jalen Green is fast becoming one of the most dynamic inside-outside threats in the league. Against the Oklahoma City Thunder, Green fearlessly drives right at a pair of promising young talents in Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jalen Williams before finishing with an athletic reverse layup. The Houston Rockets guard poured in a team-high 28 points to go along with two rebounds, nine assists and six three-pointers in his squad’s 118-105 victory on November 26, 2022.

When he’s feeling it from long range, Kevin Love is one of the most feared bench weapons in the NBA. The New York Knicks found that out the hard way, as the five-time All-Star takes a pass on the wing from Donovan Mitchell and buries a contested triple while drawing a foul. Love had a fourth quarter for the ages, connecting on five three-pointers and scoring 16 points as the Cleveland Cavaliers sank the visiting Knicks by out-scoring them by 22 points in the period. All told, Love scored 29 points in just 22 minutes on 8-for-13 from long range while adding eight rebounds in the 121-108 triumph on October 30, 2022.

Playing without two of their top scorers, the New Orleans Pelicans needed to play flawless basketball to beat the Dallas Mavericks. Trey Murphy III took the challenge literally. Pressed into starting duty, the second-year guard stepped up in a big way, taking a pass in the corner before making his move toward the basket and throwing down a ferocious slam. Murphy III made all eight of his field-goal attempts — including four triples — as well as both free throws en route to 22 points and five rebounds in his squad’s exciting 113-111 win on October 25, 2022.

As long as it goes in it doesn’t matter how you got there. Locked in a tight battle against the Memphis Grizzlies, Marcus Smart drives into the lane before coming head-to-head with Santi Aldama. Smart absorbs a body blow that sends him toppling to the hardwood and on the way down flicks up a desperation shot that somehow finds the bottom of the net. The underrated Boston Celtics point guard produced a solid all-around game with 15 points, seven rebounds and 12 assists in his team’s hard-fought 109-106 victory on November 7, 2022.

Talk about making a first impression. In the first start of his NBA career, Santi Aldama instantly rewards the Memphis Grizzlies’ faith in his ability to fill in for the injured Jaren Jackson Jr. After showing isolated flashes as a rookie, the 21-year-old from Spain has clearly elevated his game in Year 2, putting himself in the perfect spot when a triple team envelops teammate Steven Adams. Aldama makes the New York Knicks pay for leaving him open, finishing the play with a one-handed slam, two of his 18 points to go with a career-high 11 rebounds in Memphis’ 115-112 overtime win on October 19, 2022.

After a midseason trade brought him from the Phoenix Suns to the Indiana Pacers in Feb. 2022, Jalen Smith’s scoring average more than doubled, jumping from six per game to better than 13 in 22 games. With the 2022-23 season underway, Smith is here to say there’s plenty more where that came from. Detroit Pistons rookie Jaden Ivey receives a rude awakening when he attempts to put Smith on a poster, as the Pacers big man denies Ivey with a ferocious block at the rim. Smith produced a dominant performance — 19 points, 15 rebounds and three blocks to help Indiana win its first game of the season, a 124-115 triumph on October 22, 2022.

Bench players unafraid to take clutch shots can separate good teams from special ones, and Chris Boucher shows no fear against the Dallas Mavericks with the game on the line. With his team clinging to a one-point lead late in the fourth quarter, the sixth-year reserve forward helps the Toronto Raptors out in a big way by draining a tough fadeaway from the paint over Reggie Bullock. It was a dagger that kept the game out of reach, as Boucher’s 22-point, 13-rebound effort was crucial in Toronto’s 105-100 triumph on November 26, 2022.

Fifteen-year veteran JJ Redick has made a career out of working off of screens and flying off-ball for open three-pointers. But, as he shows here with a buzzer-beater for the New Orleans Pelicans, off-balanced, sideways bank shots from halfcourt do the trick just as well. Redick’s accuracy was on point during a December 25, 2019 victory over the Denver Nuggets, where he chipped in 15 points.

That’s just the way he drew it up. Jakob Poeltl gets a reminder that sometimes a little luck goes a long way, and the San Antonio Spurs are thrilled to take advantage of the good fortune. Against the Chicago Bulls, the Spurs center has the ball on the baseline and decides to fire a cross-court pass to a teammate in the other corner… only the laser pass connects with the rim first, taking a fortuitous bounce right back into the hands of Poeltl, who scoops up the ball and throws down a reverse slam before his defender even knows what happened. Poeltl’s 21 points on 10-of-12 shooting, 13 rebounds and four assists helped the Spurs outlast the Bulls 129-124 on October 28, 2022.

A 7-foot-3 basketball unicorn with slick handles and long-range touch? Welcome to the 2022-23 season. After arriving in a trade the previous season, Kristaps Porziņģis played just 17 games with the Washington Wizards, showing that unique blend of talent that made him the fourth pick of the 2015 draft. Porziņģis is clearly having fun in his first full season in D.C., taking a pass well behind the three-point arc preparing to unleash his magic. The big man makes a Chicago Bulls defender look absolutely foolish, first with a pump fake, then with an ankle-breaking crossover and long-range triple. Porziņģis tallied 14 points, three rebounds, two assists, two blocks and a steal in Washington’s 102-100 triumph on October 21, 2022.

Now on his fifth team in five seasons, Isaiah Hartenstein seems to be finding a home with the New York Knicks. Playing against the Boston Celtics, Hartenstein shows off his fundamentals, crashing the boards and turning a Jalen Brunson misfire into a one-handed put-back slam right on top of a helpless opponent. In a 38-minute run for Hartenstein, the big man made five of his six field goals for 10 points, while adding 14 rebounds, an assist and a block in the November 5, 2022 Atlantic Division showdown.

After breaking a tie with a triple on the preceding possession, the seventh-overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft does it again and puts the game out of reach by burying a step-back dagger with 41.6 seconds remaining. The third-year pro connected on 10 of his 13 shots in the game, scoring eight of his 22 points in overtime while also adding four rebounds and eight assists in Detroit’s 131-125 win on December 1, 2022.

It’s no secret that the Brooklyn Nets have plenty of star power but the true strength of any team with lofty expectations comes from its depth. Enter Royce O’Neale, who joined the Nets after spending his first five seasons as a role player with the Utah Jazz. Clinging to a one-point lead in the waning seconds of the fourth quarter, O’Neale takes a pass from Kyrie Irving on the wing and calmly buries a 25-foot dagger to sink the Toronto Raptors and deliver Brooklyn its first victory of the 2022-23 season. O’Neale scattered seven points, four rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks in the 109-105 triumph on October 21, 2022.

A major reason for the Miami Heat’s successful run over the past two decades is its ability to find critical depth pieces to support the team’s stars. Caleb Martin is among the latest examples, as the fourth-year undrafted forward steps up in a big way against the Atlanta Hawks. Supporting the Heat without Jimmy Butler, Martin brings toughness and grit to the floor as he drifts over as a help defender to deny Onyeka Okongwu with a block from behind. Martin brought it on both ends, scoring 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting while adding nine rebounds, four assists and two steals in Miami’s 106-98 come-from-behind win on November 27, 2022.

Claxton scored 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting with 11 rebounds and four blocks, helping his squad to its first victory of the season, a 109-105 decision on October 21, 2022.

The 2022-23 Minnesota Timberwolves were designed to win by the strength of their star-laden starting lineup — which makes the continued progression of Jaylen Nowell a most welcome surprise. Playing with raised confidence against the San Antonio Spurs, Nowell takes a pass at the top of the key and immediately turns on the jets toward the basket before taking flight and throwing down a backboard-shaking slam. The fourth-year reserve guard made a tremendous impact, tallying 23 points, four rebounds and two assists in 22 minutes off the bench in Minnesota’s 134-122 victory on October 26, 2022.

A new year brings with it fresh opportunities to exorcize old demons. Goga Bitadze and the Indiana Pacers dropped their final 10 games of the preceding season, riding a months-long losing streak that stretched to 12 after falling in their first two games of the 2022-23 campaign. In one play, Bitadze says out with the old, in with the new as he’s set up with a perfect alley-oop from exciting rookie teammate Bennedict Mathurin, taking out his frustrations on the rim with an effortless one-handed slam against the Detroit Pistons. Bitadze had a monster performance with 14 points, 15 rebounds and four assists off the bench, helping Indiana earn that long-awaited 124-115 victory on October 22, 2022.
