Detroit Shock rookie Swin Cash runs the floor for teammate Deanna Nolan, leaps into a catch in the paint then powers through a defender for a tough and-1. It didn’t take long for Phoenix Mercury rookie Brittney Griner to make her presence felt in her first taste of WNBA action. After gaining control of a Chicago Sky turnover on the sidelines, the 6-foot-9 center drives straight to the hoop for a thundering two-handed slam. The flush was the second of two dunks in Griner’s May 27, 2013 debut.

Stretch-four pioneer Tina Thompson does it all with the rock - it's on the defense to try and keep up. After catching a pass out on the perimeter, the Houston Comets forward makes her defender pay for closing out too aggressively, puts the ball on the floor and takes it straight to the cup for two. Thompson finished with 12 points and six boards in the July 29, 1999 win over the Cleveland Rockers.

Sylvia Fowles has the size to toy with defenders in the paint and the mobility to make the most of it. The Minnesota Lynx center takes her check baseline, drives directly under the basket then leaps out the other side to scoop in an unchallenged reverse layup. Fowles filled the stat sheet with 30 points and 16 boards in the July 18, 2018 victory over the Indiana Fever.

Regardless of the stage or circumstance, Diana Taurasi is a living, breathing bucket. With a ticket to the Finals within reach, the Phoenix Mercury guard sets up to run her defender off a screen before exploding in the opposite direction to bury a scoop shot through contact. It didn't take long for Minnesota Lynx guard Maya Moore to assert herself as a dominant figure at the WNBA level. After pushing the pace up the floor against the Atlanta Dream, the standout rookie drives hard behind the transition defense, cradles the ball as she leaps through the paint, then soars under the hoop for an instant classic reverse layup in Game 1 of the WNBA Finals on Oct. 2, 2011.

When your five can hit the gap and catch a dart in stride like a seasoned wide receiver, you know you’ve got a solid one-two combination. Seattle Storm center Lauren Jackson trails teammate Sue Bird as she sets up the team’s offense, then sprints straight to the hoop to corral an entry feed and bank home a layup before the defense even knows what hit them. Jackson put up 11 points in the July 9, 2009 win over the Sacramento Monarchs and added four blocks and three steals for good measure.

Normally forcing the offense into a fadeaway jumper as they fall out of bounds and the clock expires is effective defense. Normally. With time running out in the second quarter of a game against the Tulsa Shock, San Antonio Silver Stars guard Becky Hammon drives into the corner then launches a high-arcing leaner over the top of the backboard and into the net. In addition to the baseline heroics, Hammon finished with 18 points and five assist in the June 4, 2011 victory.

She may be known as a world-class defender but Indiana Fever star Tamika Catchings is the complete package. After forcing a turnover on one end of the floor, Catchings motions to take her Phoenix Mercury defender into the corner before spinning powerfully into the paint for two. Catchings put up 13 points and 12 boards in the June 25, 2011 win.

Sue Bird’s court vision is borderline mythical. The iconic Seattle Storm floor general attacks the Connecticut Sun in transition, draws a defender in as she dribbles toward the paint, then offloads a perfectly placed, two-handed feed behind her head to a wide-open Natasha Howard. Bird finished with 11 points and nine dimes in the July 1, 2018 victory.

When Cappie Pondexter is set on getting to the rim, attempts to stop her are merely wishful thinking. The New York Liberty guard runs her check off a screen out at the perimeter, crosses over the switch, beelines into the paint then goes up and under a help-side swat attempt for a layup on the far side of the rim. Pondexter put up 17 points in the June 5, 2013 win over the Indiana Fever.

Few make their presence felt in the paint more than Yolanda Griffith. Tied in the final seconds of a ball game, the Sacramento Monarchs center reads the rim perfectly off of a teammate’s missed jumper, nimbly leaps through the key to corral the rebound then drains a game-winning jumper. Griffith added 23 points and 16 boards in the August 10, 1999 win.

As she collects the rock, you just know she’s about to make history. Los Angeles Sparks center Lisa Leslie hauls in an outlet pass on a fastbreak then heads straight to the rack for the first dunk in WNBA history. Leslie added 13 points and eight boards in the July 30, 2002 matchup against the Miami Sol.
