Jackie Young of the Las Vegas Aces camps out in the passing lane as the Dallas Wings look to inbound the ball, then leaps through the air for the interception. The Minnesota Lynx forward sizes up her perimeter defender with a series of dribble moves before stepping back into a quick-release triple from way behind the line. Breanna Stewart has the length and athleticism to do damage any time she sets foot on the court but it’s the scorer’s intuition and touch with the rock that make her an impossible check. The Seattle Storm forward splits a pair of Phoenix Mercury defenders with a behind-the-back dribble, heads straight to the rim, then ducks to avoid the outstretched arms of shotblocker Brittney Griner as she lays in a bucket on May 20, 2018.

DeWanna Bonner’s length makes her a tough check on the best of days but it’s the skillset that makes her borderline unstoppable. The Connecticut Sun forward torments her Minnesota Lynx defender with a series of hesis and crossovers before spinning into an untouchable fadeaway on August 19, 2021. The veteran put up 31 points and 11 rebounds in the win.

After setting a high screen for New York Liberty teammate Sabrina Ionescu, Natasha Howard catches a pass in stride then immediately hits her defender with a half-spin and caps the possession off with a fadeaway jumper. With a ticket to the Finals within reach, the Phoenix Mercury guard sets up to run her defender off a screen before exploding in the opposite direction to bury a scoop shot through contact. It didn’t take long for Phoenix Mercury rookie Brittney Griner to make her presence felt in her first taste of WNBA action. After gaining control of a Chicago Sky turnover on the sidelines, the 6-foot-9 center drives straight to the hoop for a thundering two-handed slam. Knotted in the final seconds of a game against the Phoenix Mercury, the Chicago Sky rookie collects a sideline inbound pass, meets resistance from her defender out at the perimeter, posts up, then spins into the paint for a lunging jumper on September 11, 2013. The body control it takes to finish lobs as consistently as Brianna Turner is hard to comprehend. The Phoenix Mercury center cuts hard to the hoop as teammate Diana Taurasi floats an entry pass into the paint from half-court, then leaps into the air, rotates 180 degrees and lays in the bucket before the defense knows what hit them. Turner finished with 13 points, 10 boards and three blocks in the May 14, 2021 win over the Minnesota Lynx.

After sizing up her defender out on the perimeter, the Washington Mystics guard attacks the paint, starts to back her opponent down toward the hoop  but then pulls one over on everybody by lateraling a bounce-pass to a cutting Sydney Wiese under the hoop for two on August 26, 2021.

Down a pair in the final seconds of regulation, Seattle Storm guard Jordin Canada catches a hand-off from teammate Breanna Stewart in the corner and heads straight to the rim for a game-tying floater. Canada finished with 14 points in the May 22, 2021 overtime win against the Dallas Wings.

After catching a pass out on the perimeter, the powerful Washington Mystics forward puts her shoulder down and heads straight to the rack for a contested two. Triple. Double. History. Sheryl Swoopes can do it all, so it’s not surprise she’s the one to do it first. The Houston Comets star caps off a transition attack with a casual no-look dime to Cynthia Cooper. Swoopes finished the July 27, 1999 win over the Detroit Shock with 14 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists.

Blocking shots from the help side is one thing — backpedaling to keep up with a guard in transition and still managing to send an attempt packing is something else entirely. Dallas Wings center Awak Kuier keeps up with Los Angeles Sparks sophomore Te’a Cooper and thwarts her fastbreak layup in a June 1, 2021 victory.

The iconic Seattle Storm floor general attacks the Connecticut Sun in transition, draws a defender in as she dribbles toward the paint, then offloads a perfectly placed, two-handed feed behind her head to a wide-open Natasha Howard. Dallas Wings guard Allisha Gray hounds Sabrina Ionescu as she looks to get off a game-winning jumper, then blocks the attempt as the final horn sounds. Gray finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds in the September 11, 2021 win over the New York Liberty, clinching a spot in the postseason.

With a track record of big buckets spanning more than two decades, Seattle Storm veteran Sue Bird lives for the clutch. Down by three points in the final minute of a second-round matchup against the Phoenix Mercury, Bird picks and pops out to the three-point line then buries a game-tying jumper over the outstretched arms of Diana Taurasi on September 26, 2021. Bird finished with 16 points in the overtime clash.

Few make their presence felt in the paint more than Yolanda Griffith. Tied in the final seconds of a ball game, the Sacramento Monarchs center reads the rim perfectly off of a teammate’s missed jumper, nimbly leaps through the key to corral the rebound then drains a game-winning jumper. Griffith added 23 points and 16 boards in the August 10, 1999 win.

Double Sabrina Ionescu and you know she’ll make you pay for it. The New York Liberty guard draws two Phoenix Mercury defenders out of a pick-and-roll then threads a one-handed bounce pass through a gap to a streaking Natasha Howard just in time for an easy two. Ionescu finished the first-round tilt - her first career playoff matchup - with 14 points and 11 assists on September 23, 2021.

Test Monique Billings in the paint at your own risk. The Atlanta Dream forward tracks a Dallas Wings entry pass, shuffles into position from the help side, then rises up to pulverize a layup attempt on September 5, 2021. Billings added 12 points and 14 boards in the win.

After battling for position in the paint, the Connecticut Sun center power dribbles her way into the restricted area, ball fakes her defender a full 360 degrees, then floats in a fading jumper. Charles finished with 22 points and 12 boards in the comeback victory over the Indiana Fever on August 1, 2013.

When the going gets tough, Diana Taurasi gets going. Down a game in their semi-final matchup against the Las Vegas Aces, the Phoenix Mercury legend works a pick-and-roll hand-off with teammate Brianna Turner before straight up launching a high-arcing rainbow over the extended arm of center Liz Cambage. Taurasi connected on 8-of-11 triples on the night, culminating in a career-high 37 points in the September 30, 2021 contest.

Only under the bright lights of the WNBA Finals do stars become heroes and heroes become legends. After returning home to suit up for the Chicago Sky last offseason, 14-year-veteran Candace Parker finds herself in the exact right place at the exact right time. Down three after helping her squad chip away at a nine-point, fourth-quarter deficit, Parker sets up in position out at the perimeter, catches a pass from teammate Courtney Vandersloot then buries a triple to even the score with less than two minutes remaining in Game 4 of the championship series. Parker finished with 16 points, 13 rebounds, five dimes and four steals as her squad went on to clinch the first title in franchise history in front of a raucous home crowd.

Heat up in the playoffs and walk away a hero. Already feeling the hot-hand in their September 23, 2021 first-round matchup, Phoenix Mercury guard Sophie Cunningham calls for a skip pass out on the perimeter, pulls up for a triple despite a lunging defender, then connects through contact for one of her six triples. Cunningham shot six-for-seven from deep, fueling her squad to a W over the New York Liberty.

The game’s best slashers make getting to the hoop look easy. Atlanta Dream guard Odyssey Sims sends her check packing with a hesitation dribble before slicing into the paint for a seamless scoop shot over the outstretched arm of Indiana Fever center Teaira McCowan. Sims finished with 20 points in the July 11, 2021 contest.

With seconds remaining in regulation against the Atlanta Dream, Los Angeles Sparks guard Kristi Toliver drives against her check before spinning back into a fadeaway jumper from the elbow. Toliver’s hoop would send the August 17, 2021 contest to overtime and the Sparks would hold on for the W.

She may be known as a world-class defender but Indiana Fever star Tamika Catchings is the complete package. After forcing a turnover on one end of the floor, Catchings motions to take her Phoenix Mercury defender into the corner before spinning powerfully into the paint for two. Catchings put up 13 points and 12 boards in the June 25, 2011 win.

When Amanda Zahui B roams the paint as your last line of defense, good things happen. After stepping up to thwart an Indiana Fever drive attempt on one end of the floor, the Los Angeles Sparks center hustles down the court and heads straight to the rack to cap off the play as the trailer. Seattle Storm center Lauren Jackson trails teammate Sue Bird as she sets up the team’s offense, then sprints straight to the hoop to corral an entry feed and bank home a layup before the defense even knows what hit them. Jackson put up 11 points in the July 9, 2009 win over the Sacramento Monarchs and added four blocks and three steals for good measure.
