With the Suns down two and just four seconds remaining, the third-year forward camouflages himself behind the New York Knicks defense and uses one quick rhythm dribble before calmly draining the game-winning 31-foot dagger. Johnson was automatic all night with 38 points on 11-of-16 shooting, and nine three-pointers, in a 115-114 win on March 4, 2022.

For years, Toronto Raptors guard Fred VanVleet has made one message clear on defense: dribble around him at your own risk. Squared up in isolation against an old teammate, VanVleet uses quick hands for a pick-pocket steal, creating an easy layup for himself on the other end. The All-Star guard did a little bit of everything in the 127-120 win over the Chicago Bulls, with 21 points, nine assists, four rebounds and two steals on February 3, 2022.

When Golden State Warriors All-Star Draymond Green is on the floor, there’s no player, no cut, and no pass out of his line of sight. In a duel against the NBA’s top team, Green showcases every bit of that awareness, first blocking a shot on a quick closeout, leading to a fastbreak opportunity. After missing his layup, Green redeems himself with an aggressive strip and a one-handed, off-balance dish to set up a teammate for an easy bucket. Here, the Indiana Pacers lead guard takes advantage of a defensive switch on the perimeter and bursts down the lane for a nifty, right-handed layup around his defender on the left side of the rim. Haliburton stuffed the stat sheet with 15 points, 11 assists, seven rebounds and three steals in a March 6, 2022 matchup versus the Washington Wizards.

There are three-point shooters who change games, and three-point shooters who change the game. Steph Curry is definitively the latter. In a home opener to kick off another potential MVP season, the Golden State Warriors guard pushes the ball up the court and heaves it to a teammate in the corner. Curry then chases his own pass and calls for the ball back to sink a high-flying, catch-and-shoot triple. The seven-time All-Star hit his first 10 field goals of the night on October 21, 2021, while pouring in 25 of his 45 points in the first quarter alone.

Houston Rockets first-year big man Alperen Şengün follows a teammate’s high-flying three attempt and, unguarded, levitates to emphatically jam it home as it bounces off the rim. Luka Dončić coming off of a pick-and-roll is the last thing you want to see when playing the Dallas Mavericks. In a play typically saved for All-Star weekend, Dončić freezes the defense with a behind-the-back combo straight into a cross-court pass, finding Kristaps Porzingis for a crucial three-pointer on the left wing. Dončić led the way with 26 points, 14 assists and seven rebounds during the Mavericks’ 116-106 triumph over the Houston Rockets on October 26, 2021.

The ability to make tough shots cannot be taught. Denver Nuggets rookie Bones Hyland shows no fear in going 1-on-1 with his defender and puts on a series of moves, hesitations and fakes. The rising star had a career night with 27 points and seven rebounds in a 115-98 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on March 26, 2022.

Let ‘em know who you are, rook! In his regular season debut with the Memphis Grizzlies, Ziaire Williams is unguarded at the perimeter and makes the Cleveland Cavaliers defense pay by catching an outlet pass, squaring up and draining a three for the first bucket of his NBA career on October 20, 2021.

Rookie Bones Hyland is a smooth operator in the open court; his blend of speed, agility and creativity keeps the defense off-balance. After getting a steal to start the break, Hyland pushes the ball ahead, then combines a hesi-dribble with a gorgeous, left-handed, behind-the-back dish to Will Barton for a reverse layup. The Denver Nuggets guard was impressive off the bench in the 116-101 victory over the Houston Rockets on March 4, 2022, contributing 11 points, five assists and three steals.

Some rookies are just fearless from the jump. In his first regular season game with the Indiana Pacers, Chris Duarte attempts to lose his defender with a sidestep and a pump fake. With his man still on him and seconds left on the clock, Duarte pulls up for a jumper and beats the buzzer to nail a three, capping off an 11 point quarter. He shined in his debut with 27 points and five rebounds on October 20, 2021.

The Chicago Bulls All-Star attacks strong off a screen, gathers the ball and insinuates the intent to score, but instead splits two defenders with a quick drop-off pass to Javonte Green for the easy bucket. LaVine dropped a cool 28 points and six assists in a matchup with the Memphis Grizzlies on February 26, 2022.

Carmelo Anthony has mastered a lot of different skills over the course of his long career, especially ones that prelude his patented mid-range pull-up. Anthony turns back the clock with a combo of dribble moves to put his man on skates, then takes a couple rhythm bounces before cashing in his go-to jumper. The Los Angeles Lakers veteran finished with 17 points, seven rebounds and two blocks in a March 7, 2022 outing against the San Antonio Spurs.

Oklahoma City Thunder rookie guard Tre Mann assesses a fully-set Utah Jazz defense and, rolling around a screen, finds himself matched up with three-time Defensive Player of the Year Rudy Gobert. Providing an outlet for a teammate in a four-on-one situation, Sacramento Kings two-time All-Star Domantas Sabonis shows what that looks like, taking a shovel pass and charging up for an emphatic jam over the Chicago Bulls defense. Sabonis tallied up 22 points, seven rebounds and four assists, helping guide a 112-103 win on March 14, 2022.

No matter the matchup, Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards has proven he’s confident he can score in any situation. Despite giving up size in an isolation against a Denver Nuggets big, Edwards takes him for a dance, working a mix of between-the-legs, in-and-out crossovers and hesitations before getting enough space to drain a stepback three-pointer. That was the story of the night, as Edwards exploded for 38 points, 10 three-pointers and five rebounds in a 124-107 win on December 15, 2021.
