Down one, on the road, and against the Western Conference’s No. 1 seed, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander concluded that it was time to do what ascending superstars do. The Detroit Pistons’ former first-round pick built a second home in the paint during the narrow loss on January 12, 2024, stuffing the stat ledger on the way to 18 points, seven rebounds, eight assists and a block.

Commanding the respect of the New York Knicks’ defense, the dynamic forward takes full advantage of a hard closeout before carving out his path to the rim, stretching out for a powerful tomahawk slam in traffic. Though in a losing effort, the Houston Rockets big man was solid, chipping in 11 points, six rebounds and one steal on January 17, 2024.

With length to cover ground in a hurry and speed to change direction on a dime, Jonathan Kuminga is a constant threat to slash through the paint. Checked at the top of the key in a halfcourt set, Kuminga blows by his defender with a crossover, heads straight into the post and converts an acrobatic layup for two. Kuminga finished the November 3, 2023 matchup with 19 points on 9-of-15 shooting.

Whoever came up with the phrase “two-way impact player” certainly had a player like Herbert Jones in mind. Proficient at impacting the game beyond the box score, Jones begins his awe-inspiring sequence with a block as a help defender, spinning a behind-the-back pass to a teammate to trigger a transition score. Seconds later, Jones hunts down yet another opportunity, intercepting an errant pass and shoveling it to a teammate in one motion. Summoning the energy, Jones then hustles back into the play to create a 3-on-2, dealing his teammate a behind-the-back dime for another score. On their way to a franchise-best 153 points, the New Orleans Pelicans kept the “wow” plays coming against the Utah Jazz on January 23, 2024. Infinitely important, Jones missed only one shot on the way to a 22-point, five-rebound, five-assist, four 3-pointer performance.

Perfectly ironic given his status as a star on the Orlando Magic, Franz Wagner’s Eurostep has been making even the best defenders disappear. Trailing by one with just 25 seconds remaining, Wagner uses a pick-and-roll to spring himself free. Baiting the defender to bite just enough on his right-handed drive, the brilliant young forward turns to his go-to move, maneuvering through traffic with a quick two-step before gracefully rolling in a reverse, game-winning layup. Guiding his team to an In-Season Tournament win over the Chicago Bulls, Wagner turned in a team-high 21 points, four rebounds and two steals on November 17, 2023.

Unafraid to let it fly in a neck-and-neck battle between heavyweights, Cam Reddish has settled in as an extra option on the Los Angeles Lakers. Well-positioned to spread the floor as teammate LeBron James attacks the paint, Reddish bides his time, catches a kick out pass and drains a lead-padding three with just over one minute remaining against the Phoenix Suns. Reddish racked up 17 points and three steals in the November 10, 2023 contest.
