Tied on the final possession of an overtime matchup against the Charlotte Bobcats, LeBron James studies his defender at the top of the key before pulling up and draining the first game-winner of his NBA career. In addition to the milestone jumper, the Cleveland Cavaliers star racked up 37 points, 11 rebounds and 12 assists in the March 22, 2006 matchup.

When LeBron James hits the open court, the world stops and watches. In a December 23, 2005 matchup against the Indiana Pacers, the third-year Cleveland Cavaliers forward chases down a stolen ball, crosses halfcourt all alone and explodes for a two-handed, windmill reverse slam. James logged 14 points, eight rebounds and nine assists in the win.

There are few tougher tasks in sport than having to check Allen Iverson out on the perimeter. The Philadelphia 76ers legend wastes no time flashing his explosive first step against his Washington Wizards defender before drawing him off balance with a crossover in the opposite direction and making him touch earth with one final blow on March 3, 2006. Iverson finished the game with 47 points, 12 assists and a W.

Shaquille O’Neal can wreck any defense with raw power alone, but strength isn’t the only tool at the legendary big man’s disposal. The Miami Heat center showcases his staggering mobility swatting a Richard Hamilton pass attempt aside on one end of the floor, chasing down the loose ball and then taking the rock coast-to-coast for a fastbreak. O’Neal would finish with 21 points in the May 29, 2006 Eastern Conference Finals win over the Detroit Pistons.

There’s no limit to what Dwyane Wade is capable of when airborne with the rock. The Miami Heat icon loses his defender with a ball fake in the corner before blowing past into the key and somehow landing a 360-degree, spinning finger roll. Wade finished with 23 points, six boards, six assists and four steals in the November 7, 2005 win over the New Jersey Nets.

Every legend has its first triumph. Down two points with a single second on the game clock in a pivotal playoff matchup, Portland Trail Blazers guard Damian Lillard curls hard around a screen to catch an inbound pass deep on the perimeter, pulls up and buries a high-arcing, side-gliding triple. The game-winning three on May 2, 2014 sealed the first-round series in six games, avoiding a dreaded do-or-die battle on Houston Rockets soil.

Give Vince Carter enough clearance to reach full altitude and it doesn’t even matter who you throw out there to protect the rim. After gathering a loose ball with a smooth behind-the-back dribble, the high-flying New Jersey Nets swingman heads straight to the bucket, bounces off iconic Miami Heat shot blocker Alonzo Mourning and still manages to throw down an instant classic dunk of the year candidate. Carter finished with 32 points and the latest entry in a rich portfolio of unforgettable dunks in the November 7, 2005 contest.

When the world sees a modest gap in the defense, Dwyane Wade sees a runway. When a lane presents itself against the Detroit Pistons in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals, the prolific Miami Heat shooting guard beelines straight into the paint and unleashes a powerful one-handed slam. Wade finished the May 27, 2006 win with 35 points and stamped his ticket to his first NBA Finals.

What Tracy McGrady is capable of with the ball in his hands is outright historic but he makes it look so easy. The Houston Rockets swingman slices through a pair of Philadelphia 76ers defenders out at the perimeter before seamlessly transitioning into a soaring, one-handed slam in the paint. McGrady dropped 25 points and seven boards in the March 10, 2006 matchup.

There’s no better stage for adding to one’s legacy than in the NBA postseason. Knotted in a Western Conference Finals battle against the Phoenix Suns, Dallas Mavericks star Dirk Nowitzki pulls up and drains a triple to give himself 50 points and a 3-2 series lead on June 1, 2006.

Regardless of how the opposing teams line up against him, New Orleans Hornets rookie Chris Paul navigates the defense with the grace of slalom skier. The first-year guard attacks Miami Heat forward Udonis Haslem with a punishing in-and-out crossover before ducking up-and-under the rim for a contested two on November 15, 2005.

Left to show what he’s capable of in isolation, Kevin Garnett makes it easy for the world to appreciate his unprecedented skill set. With seconds remaining in a battle against the LA Clippers, the Minnesota Timberwolves legend gauges his defender at the top of the key before attacking into the paint and pivoting back into a fadeaway jumper. Garnett’s late bucket – two of his 25 points on the night - would force overtime in the November 5, 2005 affair.

Elite floor generals don’t just make the right passes, they manufacture the existence of those opportunities in the first place. Sprinting down the floor with one defender between himself and the basket, Jason Kidd pretends to drop the ball back to a trailer, baits his man into thinking he’s taking it himself, then lays up an alley-oop pass for a Richard Jefferson dunk. Kidd finished the March 19, 2006 win over the Dallas Mavericks with 15 points and nine assists.

Rest easy when Kevin Garnett is the last line of defense. With a two-point lead in the final possession of a game against the Phoenix Suns, the Minnesota Timberwolves forward rotates over as a help-side defender then leaps into the rafters to launch a potential game-winning Shawn Marion attempt directly out of bounds at the buzzer on February 6, 2006.

Carmelo Anthony can put points on the board from anywhere on the floor but there’s nothing quite like taking it straight to the rim. The Denver Nuggets forward flies past his defender with an explosive first step, then rises straight up to crown renowned Portland Trail Blazers shot blocker Theo Ratliff on February 4, 2006.  Anthony put up 33 points and eight dimes in the win.

If there’s a crack in the defense, two-time NBA MVP Steve Nash is destined to find it. After surveying his opponent and former teammate Dirk Nowitzki from out on the perimeter, the Phoenix Suns point guard heads straight at the mismatch, dashing baseline and finishing with the acrobatic two in a March 5, 2006 contest against the Dallas Mavericks. Nash posted 25 points and 11 dimes in the W.

Night in and night out, reputations are made. True to form as a shot-blocking legend, Miami Heat center Alonzo Mourning bides his time in the help-side position then darts over to leap up and eradicate a Detroit Pistons shot attempt on March 22, 2006.

It’ll take more than a bloody nose to knock Carmelo Anthony off his A-game. After securing a pass through an aggressive Phoenix Suns steal attempt at the end of a tied, triple-overtime ball game, the Denver Nuggets forward spins into position for a game-winning mid-range jumper. Despite taking an incidental knee to the face in the third extra frame and wearing the requisite medical accoutrements into the last possession, Anthony finished the January 10, 2006 contest with 43 points.

Lamar Odom, with a full head of steam, is a problem for even the fiercest of rim protectors. The versatile Los Angeles Lakers forward attacks a gap in the Orlando Magic defense, catches a feed from Brian Cook in stride, then unleashes a powerful one-handed slam over Dwight Howard on February 28, 2006.

Count on Paul Pierce to find the bottom of the net from anywhere in the building. After pushing the ball up the floor at the tail end of the third quarter on March 26, 2006, the Boston Celtics star lets a deep three fly from the logo. Pierce finished with 24 points, eight rebounds and eight dimes in the matchup against the Chicago Bulls.

The game of basketball unfolds in slow motion for Chris Paul. The New Orleans Hornets rookie surveys the defense as he brings the ball across halfcourt then proceeds to slalom through the paint with a series of in-and-out and behind-the-back dribbles before capping off the drive with a tough layup. Paul added 24 points, eight assists and four steals in the December 23, 2005 tilt against the Milwaukee Bucks.

Ben Wallace’s legacy is built around doing what others have considered impossible. In a hard-fought Eastern Conference Finals battle with the Miami Heat, the undrafted four-time Defensive Player of the Year notices powerhouse opponent Shaquille O’Neal clearing out his own defender under the paint, then races over to leap through the air for a Herculean help-side block on May 31, 2006.

When Ray Allen says it’s time to head home, it’s time to head home. After battling with the Phoenix Suns for an entire ball game and almost two full overtimes, Seattle SuperSonics guard Ray Allen calls for the ball in the final seconds of a tied contest and buries a 30-foot game winner. Allen finished the January 22, 2006 marathon with 42 points and the W.

If Jason Richardson made dunk-contest-worthy in-game heroics look easy, it’s because, for him, they were. All alone on a fastbreak against the Miami Heat, the Golden State Warriors wing casually lopes to the rim for a brilliantly effortless 360-degree slam on March 10, 2006. Richardson did it all in the W, adding 44 points in the process.

Regardless of the opposing forces around him, Elton Brand is an unstoppable force on the glass. After battling for a board in a May 8, 2006 playoff contest against the Phoenix Suns, the LA Clippers power forward fades back into a jump shot for two of the 40 points he reached in total.

Win alongside the same personnel season after season and the chemistry builds itself. San Antonio Spurs big man Tim Duncan creeps into the high post as teammate Tony Parker works his man off the dribble in the corner, then re-emerges to give the point guard a pass target resulting in a powerful one-handed slam against the New Orleans Hornets on March 14, 2006.

A little vigilance on D goes a long way toward creating opportunities on offense. Los Angeles Lakers guard Smush Parker reaches in to break up a Utah Jazz pass attempt on one end of the court then takes the rock the length of the floor himself to cap off the break with a 180-degree reverse on February 13, 2006.

If the lob is anywhere in the building, the lob’s within reach of a soaring Dwight Howard. The Orlando Magic big man runs the break with his teammates, works a give-and-go with point guard Jameer Nelson, then reaches way back to cradle and throw down a thundering alley-oop on March 17, 2006. Howard finished with 17 points, 13 rebounds and six blocks against the Boston Celtics.

When Chris Bosh is cleared for takeoff, look out. The Toronto Raptors forward catches a pass with a defender draped over his back, then spins seamlessly toward the baseline to hit the paint and throw down a powerful one-handed dunk. Bosh finished with 23 points in the January 15, 2006 win over the New York Knicks.

Reach against Paul Pierce and he’ll leave you in the dust. The Boston Celtics swing man puts his body between himself and the defender before swiftly spinning and heading straight for the rack to crown the help-side defense on March 19, 2006. Pierce finished with 22 points, six boards and six assists in the win over the Indiana Pacers.

Count on a battle-tested floor general to make the most of any situation. With two seconds on the clock and 94-feet left to advance, Denver Nuggets guard Andre Miller calls for an inbound pass under his own net then leaps into a 75-foot heave that soars straight through the hoop against the Dallas Mavericks on April 2, 2006.

Checking Baron Davis in isolation is an unenviable task. The explosive Golden State Warriors guard puts his defender in a trance out on the perimeter before sending him straight down to the hardwood and nailing a jumper. Davis picked apart the Portland Trail Blazers all night long, finishing with 29 points, eight rebounds and 16 dimes in the January 28, 2006 W.

Give Ben Wallace an opportunity to let loose on the rim and he’ll let the world know. After setting a screen for teammate Richard Hamilton, Wallace rolls to the rim and unleashes an emphatic alley-oop slam against the Milwaukee Bucks. Wallace and his squad would cruise to a win in the April 26, 2006 playoff contest.

Putting the ball through the net unchallenged is one thing — getting into position to get a shot off when the defense won’t give up an inch is another. Down by three at the end of a second-overtime period versus the Boston Celtics, Philadelphia 76ers forward Kyle Korver works to clear space between himself and his defender before finally pulling up for a contested three. Korver finished with 12 points in the January 13, 2006 matchup and his squad held on for the win in triple overtime.

If there’s a way to put the ball in the bucket, expect Manu Ginobili to find it. The evasive San Antonio Spurs guard attacks a gap in the Los Angeles Lakers defense, gathers the ball under the hoop then converts on a 180-degree layup through contact on March 10, 2006.

Dwight Howard doesn’t need a cape to fly horizontally. Trailing some Orlando Magic teammates in transition, the second-year big man calls for a pass at the free-throw line then launches up, over and through his Atlanta Hawks defender for an epic slam on March 26, 2006. Howard logged 15 points and 13 boards in the win.

Blink and you’ll miss playmaking greatness — Stephon Marbury thrives on it. After blowing past his own defender out on the perimeter, the New York Knicks point guard leaps through the paint against the Philadelphia 76ers help-side and tucks a subtle behind-the-back feed around his body to teammate Eddy Curry for a slam on March 31, 2006.

While having an unmistakable 7-foot lob target doesn’t hurt, it takes a soft touch around the basket to convert on a sideline alley-oop. With 0.7 seconds left on the game clock against the San Antonio Spurs, Milwaukee Bucks forward Toni Kukoc looks through the chaos to find rookie big man Andrew Bogut in position to catch and redirect a high-arcing pass through the net as the buzzer sounds. Bogut finished the extra frame with 19 points and nine rebounds on December 20, 2005.

Scorers find the bucket— just let them do their thing. After catching a pass out at the perimeter, Milwaukee Bucks guard Michael Redd runs his defender off a screen, crosses over to attack the paint, then lobs up an acrobatic windmill floater over the outstretched arms of a vaunted Detroit Pistons defense. Redd finished with 29 points in the April 26, 2006 playoff matchup.

Appreciate hoopers that make their impact felt on both ends of the floor. After forcing a turnover against the LA Clippers on defense, New York Knicks rookie Nate Robinson collects the rock, sprints straight down the court, then spins his way into an acrobatic layup on February 7, 2006.

The ground surface that Gerald Wallace can cover while hounding a ball carrier is outright impressive. The Charlotte Bobcats forward puts pressure on Chris Paul at the top of the key, makes an aggressive push for a steal, then recovers in time to swat an ensuing layup attempt directly out of bounds with the trajectory of a laser. Wallace finished the January 16, 2006 contest with 19 points, seven rebounds, six blocks and two steals.

At no point in time has checking Golden State Warriors guard Baron Davis come easy. Operating in transition against the Houston Rockets, the creative playmaker splits a pair of defenders with a behind-the-back move, then ducks under their outstretched arms to bank home a reverse layup. Davis finished with 27 points and 13 assists in the December 14, 2005 matchup.

With time in short supply in the final minute of a tight ball game, the Sacramento Kings guard drives against his Toronto Raptors defender then steps back into a clutch jumper. While his squad would ultimately fall short, Bibby finished the January 29, 2006 overtime tilt with 42 points.

Sometimes the quickest way from Point A to Point B is in a straight line. Portland Trail Blazers rookie Jarrett Jack runs his defender hard off a screen at the top of the key, mixes up the help-side with a ball fake, then lays it in for two against the Seattle SuperSonics on April 2, 2006.

Robert Horry has made a living making difficult tasks look ever so easy. With his teammate double-teamed in the low block, the San Antonio Spurs forward sneaks into the paint to bail him out and immediately relays the rock behind his back to a wide-open Nazr Mohammed for two on December 21, 2005.

Confident shooters with quick releases never back down from big moments. Tied with 4.6 seconds left in overtime, Chicago Bulls combo guard Ben Gordon works his defender off the dribble before pulling up for a long two at the buzzer. Gordon finished with 32 points in the January 18, 2006 win over the New York Knicks.

After finding a streaking Iverson with the rock, Iguodala trails straight into position to cap off a crafty give-and-go with a thundering slam all over the Boston Celtics. Iguodala put up 14 points and nine boards in the triple-overtime battle on January 13, 2006.
