In yet another display of unfathomable scoring ability, the Phoenix Suns superstar absolutely torches the Chicago Bulls in every possible way — on dribble drive layups and pull-up jumpers, stepback and spot-up three-pointers, post-up fadeaways and a steal that becomes a coast-to-coast throwdown, just to name a few. When the third quarter was finished, Booker had accumulated 51 points on 20-of-25 from the field and 6-for-7 from downtown, pairing that with four rebounds, six assists and a steal in 31 minutes in Phoenix’s 132-113 runaway victory on November 30, 2022.

With the game deadlocked in the closing seconds of the fourth quarter, there was little doubt who would be taking the final shot for the Washington Wizards. Bradley Beal is that guy for the Wizards, as the three-time All-Star drives straight into the teeth of the Chicago Bulls defense and is able to connect on a difficult game-winner off the glass despite being hounded by two defenders in the post. Beal’s heroics — along with his 19 points, eight assists and two blocks — propelled the Wizards to a 2-0 start following the 102-100 thriller on October 21, 2022.

The Orlando Magic second-year guard flexes his clutch muscle against the Chicago Bulls, as the fifth-overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft races up the court with purpose in the closing seconds and his team down by two. Just as a drive to the basket feels inevitable, Suggs recovers by spinning back behind the arc and nailing the game-winning stepback triple from the right wing with under five seconds to play. Suggs’ 20 points, five rebounds and eight assists were the catalyst in the 108-107 victory on November 18, 2022.

Anthony Edwards makes magic happen at both ends for the Minnesota Timberwolves, first recording an unforgiving block on the Miami Heat’s Max Strus before quickly finding the ball back in his hands while leading the transition attack. The first-overall selection of the 2020 NBA Draft again comes face-to-face with Strus, breaking him down off the dribble atop the key before launching a shifty stepback triple that’s all net. Edwards posted 22 points, seven rebounds, four assists, four steals and four three-pointers in his squad’s 105-101 victory on November 21, 2022.

Superstars shine brighter on Christmas Day. In a blockbuster matchup with the New York Knicks, Boston Celtics big Kevin Garnett shuffles into the paint and calls for a pass from teammate Ray Allen. Catching the ball in mid-air, Garnett acts decisively dishing a behind-the-back dime to Jermaine O’Neal at the rim. Garnett had 15 points and eight boards on December 25, 2011.

The first six minutes of Jalen Williams’ career turned out to be pretty perfect. After the Oklahoma City Thunder made him the 12th pick in the draft, Williams rewards their faith, passing up a three-point attempt to instead take a run right at Karl-Anthony Towns. Williams puts the ball on the floor with his left hand, driving hard toward the basket and getting the best of the Minnesota Timberwolves’ three-time All-Star with a baseline floater. Williams made both of his field-goal attempts and added an assist during his October 19, 2022 professional debut.

It took all of one game for Jabari Smith Jr. to make an immediate impact with the Houston Rockets. A few months after Houston made him the third pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, the 6-foot-11 rookie rewards his team’s faith in him by showcasing his deft shooting touch from long range. Against the Atlanta Hawks in his first professional game, Smith Jr. crosses halfcourt, takes a pass from a teammate and without hesitation rises up from way behind the arc to drain one of his three triples. The Rockets may have lost the game, but they left Atlanta feeling confident about the future after Smith Jr. posted 17 points and seven rebounds on October 19, 2022.

A double-double in your NBA debut? Not too shabby for Utah Jazz rookie Walker Kessler, who came to play in his first career game against the Denver Nuggets. The 7-footer runs the floor with teammate Collin Sexton, who drops off a pass at the foul line and leaves Kessler face-to-face with two-time reigning MVP Nikola Jokić. Kessler shows no fear, taking one dribble before pivoting his way around the Joker for a hard-earned layup. The 22nd-overall pick made all five of his field-goal attempts for 12 points while adding 10 rebounds, an assist and a steal, helping Utah prevail 123-102 on October 19, 2022.

From second-round pick to immediate rotation contributor — not too shabby for Andrew Nembhard. The first pick of the 2022 NBA Draft’s second round showcases his unselfish playmaking ability against the San Antonio Spurs, driving just inside the three-point arc before flicking a beauty of an alley-oop pass to fellow reserve Isaiah Jackson for the throwdown. Nembhard logged 30 minutes of action in his NBA debut, contributing 14 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals in the October 21, 2022 contest.

Second time's the charm. Seeking the first points of his NBA career, Nikola Jović couldn’t believe his good fortune when he found himself wide open under the basket. The Miami Heat puts up a shot attempt then recovers an offensive board in time to convert the putback opportunity. It was the only basket of the night for the 27th-overall pick in the draft, who finished with two points, two rebounds and a steal in 14 minutes of action in Miami’s 119-98 road victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on October 26, 2022.

Steph Curry’s shooting and scoring abilities get their just praise — but how about some love for the way the Golden State Warriors star gets his buckets? Granted an opportunity to strike from the corner, Curry sets his sight on the rim, splitting two defenders with a smooth behind-the-back maneuver, then finishes at the cup with a layup. The four-time champion scores two of his game-high 24 points on the play while also chipping in six rebounds, 10 assists, two steals and five triples in his squad’s 111-101 win on November 18, 2022.

A healthy Anthony Davis is double trouble for the opposition. Playing in his first game since an injury forced him to shut it down early a season ago, Davis proves just how scary he can be against the defending champion Golden State Warriors. First, the eight-time All-Star deposits a difficult floater off an inbound pass, then uses all of his lengthy 6-foot-10 frame to pick off a lazy Steph Curry pass on the ensuing trip up the floor. Davis then beats everyone in a race to the hoop, dropping in a layup while absorbing contact for an and-one opportunity. The Warriors won the game, but Los Angeles Lakers fans have to be feeling good about Davis’ 27-point, six-rebound, four-steal effort on October 18, 2022.

On a nightly basis, Nikola Jokić makes the difficult look routine. The two-time reigning MVP has something special planned for the Houston Rockets, catching the ball in the post before burying a turnaround baseline jumper in rhythm on just one foot. The four-time All-Star tormented the Rockets all night, scoring 32 points on 11-of-17 shooting — his third time hitting 30 points in the past four games — while also grabbing 12 rebounds and dishing out eight assists in the Denver Nuggets’ 129-113 victory on November 28, 2022.

Trailing by three points with 1.3 seconds remaining in regulation, Matt Ryan was subbed into the game with one objective — tie the ballgame. Mission accomplished for the Los Angeles Lakers newcomer. Off a perfectly-executed inbound pass from Austin Reaves, the sharpshooting Ryan, in his Top Shot debut, has just enough time to set his feet and force overtime with a corner three-pointer directly in front of the Lakers’ bench. Ryan played a critical role for the Lakers in just his sixth career game, chipping in 11 points, two rebounds, an assist and three triples in a much-needed 120-117 win over the New Orleans Pelicans on November 2, 2022.

Following a thunderous James rejection of Paul George, Austin Reaves scoops up the loose ball and motors the other way in transition before lobbing a flawless alley-oop pass to Lonnie Walker IV, who finishes the slam to get the home crowd on its feet. Reaves had an effective 22-minute run off the bench, posting four points, four rebounds and two assists in the Los Angeles Lakers’ intra-city rivalry game against the LA Clippers on October 20, 2022.

The six-time All-Star is already in midseason form in the early stages of his 11th season with the Portland Trail Blazers, breaking the hearts of opposing teams thanks to his impeccably clutch shooting. Against the high-powered Phoenix Suns, Lillard does what he does best, using a dizzying array of dribbles as he hunts for his shot. Multiple defenders give chase to no avail, as Lillard unleashes a 20-footer with a high degree of difficulty that finds its home in the bottom of the net. It was the 41st time in Lillard’s career that he exploded for 40 or more in a game, extinguishing the Suns with 41 points, seven rebounds and three assists in Portland’s 113-111 overtime victory on October 21, 2022.

Tyrese Haliburton was a revelation in 26 games for the Indiana Pacers after a midseason acquisition in February 2022. To the delight of Pacers fans, the talented third-year point guard has picked up right where he left off to open the 2022-23 season. In Indiana’s first game against the Washington Wizards, Haliburton pushes the ball up the court and takes on all comers, using a yo-yo-dribble-hesi combination to fool the defense before clearing a path to the rim and throwing down a dunk. Haliburton scored a game-high 26 points to go with four rebounds and seven assists on October 19, 2022.

Fresh off achieving a national championship in college, Christian Braun has brought an unselfish, winning style of basketball with him to the Denver Nuggets. Against the Utah Jazz, the rookie shows he’s willing to do whatever it takes to secure a victory, fearlessly stepping in front of Malik Beasley to turn a wide-open dunk into a ferocious rejection. Braun continued to make an impact off the Nuggets bench, chipping in 10 points, six rebounds, an assist and a block in Denver’s 117-101 triumph on October 28, 2022.

Playing in just his fifth game with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Mitchell receives a rude awakening courtesy of the Boston Celtics’ 2021 All-Star. When Brown picks off a Mitchell bounce pass, he and teammate Marcus Smart motor the other way on a 2-on-1 advantage. Brown collects a bounce pass and then takes flight, slamming an angry one-handed dunk on top of his helpless opponent. Brown put together a solid performance of 32 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals on October 28, 2022.

The New Orleans Pelicans All-Star forward scoops up a bounce pass on the elbow and makes his move, putting the ball on the floor and muscling his way to a layup despite spinning his way into a traffic jam underneath the basket. Williamson poured in a season-high 32 points on 14-of-18 from the field to go along with 11 rebounds and two steals in his squad’s 129-110 win on November 23, 2022.

Having hit a new scoring gear to start the 2022-23 season, it’s safe to say that Myles Turner’s offensive game has evolved - just ask the Minnesota Timberwolves. After confidently pump faking two defenders beyond the arc, Turner motors toward the basket and throws down an absolutely thunderous jam over a helpless Jaden McDaniels. Turner’s ground-shaking dunk contributed to his excellent night, posting 31 points, seven rebounds, two assists, four steals and seven three-pointers for the feisty Pacers on November 23, 2022.

Pressed into starting duty for a resting Klay Thompson, the fourth-year guard keeps the Golden State Warriors offense humming with a strong drive into the paint before dropping off a beauty of a behind-the-back no-look pass to a cutting Jonathan Kuminga. Poole’s 21 points, two rebounds, five assists and five three-pointers helped deliver the Warriors a 120-101 win over the Houston Rockets on December 3, 2022.

Scottie Barnes’ ability to impact a game on multiple fronts is what won him the NBA Rookie of the Year award. In Year 2, it’s clear that this is still very much the case. Competing against the Detroit Pistons, Barnes takes a pass in stride while driving into the lane, then drops off a slick one-handed bounce pass while airborne to a cutting Dalano Banton. Barnes’ eight points, five rebounds, four assists, one steal and one block made a major impact in Toronto’s 115-111 victory on November 14, 2022.

This fantasy turned into a reality for Royce O’Neale against the Portland Trail Blazers, going from inbound passer to hero as the Brooklyn Nets forward puts himself in the right place at the perfect time to tip in Kevin Durant’s missed jumper with under a second to play. The Nets needed every one of O’Neale’s 11 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists to knock off the Blazers 109-107 on November 17, 2022.

When better to display your gifts than Christmas Day? In a December 25, 2015 matchup against the Oklahoma City Thunder, Chicago Bulls star Jimmy Butler catches the ball just past halfcourt and pulls up for a deep triple before defender Kevin Durant can get within reach. Butler had a team-high 23 points to go with six boards in the win.

The holidays are for giving, but don’t tell that to Kawhi Leonard. Here, the San Antonio Spurs forward sneaks into a passing lane, corrals a steal and speeds down the floor for a fastbreak slam. Leonard contributed 20 points, eight rebounds, four assists, five steals and three blocks against the Houston Rockets on December 25, 2015.

Almost a quarter of the way into the 2022-23 season, one thing has become clear — if Jericho Sims is on the court, he’s probably going to dunk on you. The New York Knicks’ reserve center continues to be his squad’s resident alley-oop recipient, this time against the Utah Jazz as he gets teed up for a perfectly-executed lob from Immanuel Quickley. The second-year big man was strong in 25 productive minutes, making 5-of-7 field-goal attempts for 11 points, while adding 13 rebounds, two assists and a steal in the Knicks’ 118-111 road win on November 15, 2022.

Now that’s how you announce your presence to the rest of the league. A year after averaging just three points per game in less than eight minutes a night, Nick Richards has burst on to the scene for the Charlotte Hornets in the early stages of the 2022-23 season. After erupting for 19 points and 10 rebounds in the season opener, the reserve center one-ups himself against the Atlanta Hawks. Executing a flawless pick-and-roll with fellow reserve James Bouknight, Richards takes a bounce pass from his teammate and rises up for an emphatic one-handed slam. It was a perfect game for Richards, who made all nine of his field goal attempts in a 20-point, 11-rebound, two-block effort in 20 efficient minutes in Charlotte’s 126-109 win on October 23, 2022.

New season, same results for Andrew Wiggins and the Golden State Warriors. Fresh off a transformative title run a season ago, Wiggins and company are back to defend the crown. Against an overmatched Sacramento Kings squad, the 2022 All-Star shows last year’s postseason run was no fluke, stepping into a passing lane and picking off a lazy pass. Wiggins is off to the races from there, finishing the fast break with a slam en route 24 points, five rebounds, three steals and two blocks in Golden State’s 130-125 victory on October 23, 2022.

In just his second game back from an injury that caused him to miss all but nine games a year ago, Michael Porter Jr. has opened the 2022-23 season looking very much like his old self. Drawing one of the game’s toughest defensive assignments in Steph Curry, Porter Jr. doesn’t flinch, staying in lockstep with the four-time champion and two-time MVP on his path to the basket, swatting Curry’s shot with authority. Porter Jr. brought it on the offensive end too, contributing 17 points and six rebounds in the Denver Nuggets’ 128-123 road win at the defending champion Golden State Warriors on October 21, 2022.

At this point, stopping DeMar DeRozan is borderline impossible — at best, you hope to contain him. The Boston Celtics, in this case, struggle to do either as the Chicago Bulls’ scoring machine plays one-on-five, getting himself to the basket with a dizzying array of dribbles, spins and crosses before finishing strong with a tough reverse layup. Boston ultimately got the win, but not before DeRozan torched the Celtics for a season-high 46 points on 13-for-23 from the field and 20-of-22 from the line to go with his three rebounds, five assists and two steals on November 4, 2022.

As the LA Clippers were quick to discover, fancy footwork in the frontcourt is no fun to defend. Now in his second season, Houston Rockets center Alperen Şengün continues to impress — after setting a screen for a teammate, the 6-foot-11 Turkish big man collapses toward the basket and catches a pass in the paint before pivoting around his defender with a nimble spin move. The subsequent layup was good for two of Şengün’s team-high 26 points, and he also chipped in 13 rebounds, two assists and a steal in the November 2, 2022 Western Conference showdown.

Even when you send a double team Trae Young’s way, he still finds ways to beat you. When two Detroit Pistons converge behind the arc to prevent him from bombing a triple, the two-time All-Star does the next best thing and whips a no-look pass into the post to Clint Capela, who converts the layup attempt while drawing a foul. Young’s elite ability to make any shot or pass makes him nearly impossible to defend, as his 36 points, two rebounds, 12 assists and four triples were enough to sink the Pistons 136-112 on October 28, 2022.

Tyler Herro played 175 regular season games over his first three seasons without recording a triple-double. It took him but a dozen in Year 4 to finally check the milestone off his list. The Atlanta Hawks had no answers for the Miami Heat guard, who shows off his connection with teammate Bam Adebayo as he drives straight into the paint before lofting a high-arcing alley-oop pass that gets slammed home with authority. Herro recorded 11 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists, helping the Heat to a 106-98 victory on November 27, 2022.

It’s a holiday — why not throw a block party? New Orleans Pelicans star-in-the-making Anthony Davis meets Chris Bosh at the rim to reject the future Hall of Famer with a one-handed swat. Davis went off in the Christmas Day fixture with a team high 29 points and 15 rebounds on December 25, 2015.

The Utah Jazz didn’t learn their lesson the first time they tried to trespass in Deandre Ayton’s paint, so he was more than willing to remind them again. Mike Conley gains access to the lane with a pretty crossover move but fails to account for the Phoenix Suns’ center, who viciously denies the attempt. When the deflection falls into Conley’s hands again, he decides to give it another shot and is promptly denied. The Suns lost a heartbreaker, but Ayton pulled his weight with 17 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists and three blocks on November 18, 2022.

Give me that! Brook Lopez has no time for Houston Rockets guard Jalen Green’s drive to the hoop, literally ripping the ball out of Green’s hands in his attempt to score and needing only one arm to do so. It was a block party for the Milwaukee Bucks’ 15-year veteran, who swatted five shots in the October 22, 2022 contest. The seven-footer did a little bit of everything for the Bucks — in addition to the five blocks, Lopez scored nine points, grabbed five rebounds, dished out two assists, grabbed two steals and sank a trio of three-pointers in Milwaukee’s runaway 125-105 victory.

There’s efficiency… and then there’s Grant Williams. As his Boston Celtics opened the 2022-23 campaign defending their Eastern Conference crown, Williams brought with him some of last season’s magic. Coming off the bench against the rival Philadelphia 76ers, Williams refused to miss, pump faking Shake Milton out of his sneakers while sinking a corner three-pointer. Williams made all five of his field goal attempts — including three triples — along with a rebound and assist in Boston’s 126-117 victory on October 18, 2022.

Just in case anybody forgot, there isn’t a shot on the court that Fred VanVleet can’t make. After missing the Toronto Raptors’ previous three games with an injury, the 2022 first-time All-Star issues a harsh reminder to the Chicago Bulls at how deadly his stroke is when he’s feeling it. The seventh-year point guard shakes off suffocating defensive pressure from Chicago’s Ayo Dosunmu, as VanVleet dribbles behind his back before absorbing contact and somehow getting an off-balance jumper to fall. VanVleet was at his very best, producing season-highs of 30 points and 11 assists to go with five rebounds and three-pointers apiece in Toronto’s 113-104 victory on November 6, 2022.

For the 20th time in his decorated career, Paul George did something most NBA players won’t sniff even once — score 40 points in a game. Against the Sacramento Kings, the seven-time All-Star enters total domination mode, taking a pass atop the key before stepping on the accelerator and hitting the defense with an unguardable spin move en route to two of his 40. The LA Clippers needed every one of them to get past the pesky Kings, as George’s 40 points, six rebounds, six assists and two steals were the difference in the 111-109 road win on October 22, 2022. The output made George the 14th active player to score 40 or more in a game at least 20 times.

If you didn’t know Dalano Banton’s name before, you sure do now. With his shorthanded Toronto Raptors missing three key players against the Detroit Pistons, Banton took the opportunity to introduce himself. The second-year guard was a star on both ends, first creating a steal when he picks rookie Jaden Ivey’s pocket and then capping off the possessions with an emphatic slam on the other end.
