In his first home game following a long injury absence, Steph Curry gave the fans -- including 55 Top Shot collectors from the Strength in Moments fan community -- their money's worth. An All-Star for the ninth time in 2023, Curry was especially clutch in the fourth quarter and overtime against the Milwaukee Bucks, hitting three huge 3-pointers in the final two minutes of regulation, including one that tied the score with 19 seconds left. Curry then preserved the tie and sent the game to the extra session when he landed a critical block on Jrue Holiday's driving layup attempt. Of course, Curry wasn't done as he nailed an overtime trey that put the game out of reach — his 36 points, six rebounds, four assists, two steals and six triples guided the Golden State Warriors to a 125-116 win on March 11, 2023. The four-time champion became the all-time Warriors leader in field goals made in 2023 while also tying an NBA record with his seventh 50-point game after the age of 30.

LeBron James running the break is a sure sign to get your popcorn ready. The King was off to the races after he scooped up a loose ball on the defensive end and passed off to an in-transition Dennis Schröder, whose eyes lit up when he realized he and James had the Charlotte Hornets’ defense beat on a 2-on-1 fast break. Schröder lobbed an alley-oop to his superstar teammate, who wowed the Charlotte crowd with a high-flying reverse windmill slam. James shot 16 for 26 for a game-high 43 points while mixing in 11 rebounds and six assists in a 121-115 Los Angeles Lakers victory on January 2, 2023. During a season when he became the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, James was named an All-Star for a record-tying 19th time.

It sure didn’t take long for Kevin Durant’s winning touch to be felt by the Phoenix Suns. In just the third time suiting up for his new team, the 13-time All-Star reminded the Dallas Mavericks why he’s one of the most clutch shooters in league history. After the Mavs took a late two-point lead on an alley-oop from Luka Dončić to Dwight Powell, Durant beat Tim Hardaway Jr. off the dribble before pulling up and burying a game-winning midrange jumper from the elbow with 12.1 seconds remaining. Durant’s game-high 37 points, along with seven rebounds and three assists, allowed the Suns to stay unbeaten since his arrival in a 130-126 win on March 5, 2023. Durant moved into the top-20 on the NBA’s career scoring list in 2023.

If Giannis Antetokounmpo’s New Year’s resolution was to set a new career-high in points then 2023 got off to a brilliant start. An All-Star in a seventh consecutive season, the two-time MVP repeatedly attacked the rim in a series of strong drives that the Washington Wizards were powerless to stop. Antetokounmpo put forth a sterling effort on the defensive end too and was rewarded for his hustle when he picked off a careless pass and turned it into a fast-break windmill slam. Antetokounmpo scored 55 points on 20 of 33 from the field while also converting all but one of his 16 free throws. He also posted 10 rebounds, seven assists and two steals in a 123-113 Milwaukee Bucks victory on January 3, 2023 — the sixth time the Greek Freak has reached the 50-point mark. Antetokounmpo averaged a career-best 31.1 points per game and finished third in MVP voting, the sixth consecutive season he received votes and his fourth time finishing in the top-three.

Joel Embiid may have scored the game-winning bucket, but the fourth quarter belonged to James Harden. All four of Harden’s 3-pointers came in the final period, two of which were of his patented step-back variety, and the 10-time All-Star also scored from midrange and at the rim with the help of his renowned handles on his way to 18 in the quarter. Harden also had the assist on Embiid’s winning jumper with 5.1 seconds remaining and at one point scored 16 straight points for the Philadelphia 76ers over a 3 ½-minute stretch. Harden led the way with 31 points and also posted six rebounds and 11 assists in Philly’s thrilling 118-117 victory on January 14, 2023. Harden’s 10.7 assists per game led the league for the second time in his career, and his 38.5 percentage on 3-pointers was his best season from downtown since 2012.

For one night Jaylen Brown’s facial protection mask turned him into a superhero. Brown ran the break with Malcolm Brogdon following his teammate’s steal until Brogdon dumped it off to Brown for a gravity-defying throwdown over San Antonio Spurs forward Sandro Mamukelashvili. Even without Jayson Tatum in the lineup, Brown still led the Boston Celtics to one of their most dominant victories of the season — a 137-93 rout on March 26, 2023 in which he posted 41 points, 13 rebounds and three assists. An All-Star for the second time in 2023, the seven-year veteran posted career-best averages in points, rebounds, minutes and field goal percentage all while leading his squad to 57 wins, the most for a Celtics team since 2008-09.

Running the pick-and-roll with LeBron James sometimes appears so easy that it might as well be a cheat code. The 19-time All-Star shares the wealth at home against the Washington Wizards, bringing the ball across halfcourt before gaining access to the lane courtesy of a helpful screen. James baits the defense into focusing on him, but instead of taking the shot himself he drops off a smooth between-the-legs bounce pass to a cutting Thomas Bryant for a two-handed throwdown. James scored a game-high 33 points while adding seven rebounds and nine assists in the Los Angeles Lakers’ 119-117 victory on December 18, 2022.

Steph Curry’s shooting and scoring abilities get their just praise — but how about some love for the way the Golden State Warriors star gets his buckets? Granted an opportunity to strike from the corner, Curry sets his sight on the rim, splitting two defenders with a smooth behind-the-back maneuver, then finishes at the cup with a layup. The four-time champion scores two of his game-high 24 points on the play while also chipping in six rebounds, 10 assists, two steals and five triples in his squad’s 111-101 win on November 18, 2022.

On a nightly basis, Nikola Jokić makes the difficult look routine. The two-time reigning MVP has something special planned for the Houston Rockets, catching the ball in the post before burying a turnaround baseline jumper in rhythm on just one foot. The four-time All-Star tormented the Rockets all night, scoring 32 points on 11-of-17 shooting — his third time hitting 30 points in the past four games — while also grabbing 12 rebounds and dishing out eight assists in the Denver Nuggets’ 129-113 victory on November 28, 2022.

Trailing by three points with 1.3 seconds remaining in regulation, Matt Ryan was subbed into the game with one objective — tie the ballgame. Mission accomplished for the Los Angeles Lakers newcomer. Off a perfectly-executed inbound pass from Austin Reaves, the sharpshooting Ryan, in his Top Shot debut, has just enough time to set his feet and force overtime with a corner three-pointer directly in front of the Lakers’ bench. Ryan played a critical role for the Lakers in just his sixth career game, chipping in 11 points, two rebounds, an assist and three triples in a much-needed 120-117 win over the New Orleans Pelicans on November 2, 2022.

New season, same old Damian Lillard. The six-time All-Star is already in midseason form in the early stages of his 11th season with the Portland Trail Blazers, breaking the hearts of opposing teams thanks to his impeccably clutch shooting. Against the high-powered Phoenix Suns, Lillard does what he does best, using a dizzying array of dribbles as he hunts for his shot. Multiple defenders give chase to no avail, as Lillard unleashes a 20-footer with a high degree of difficulty that finds its home in the bottom of the net. It was the 41st time in Lillard’s career that he exploded for 40 or more in a game, extinguishing the Suns with 41 points, seven rebounds and three assists in Portland’s 113-111 overtime victory on October 21, 2022.

When you’re on the court with LeBron James as your teammate, it’s only a matter of time before opportunity knocks. Following a thunderous James rejection of Paul George, Austin Reaves scoops up the loose ball and motors the other way in transition before lobbing a flawless alley-oop pass to Lonnie Walker IV, who finishes the slam to get the home crowd on its feet. Reaves had an effective 22-minute run off the bench, posting four points, four rebounds and two assists in the Los Angeles Lakers’ intra-city rivalry game against the LA Clippers on October 20, 2022.

He’s so good that he doesn’t even need his eyes to make spectacular plays. Such is life when you’re Giannis Antetokounmpo, who continues to make the impossible happen on a nightly basis. Returning from a two-game absence against the Atlanta Hawks, the Milwaukee Bucks superstar makes up for lost time by flicking a no-look over-the-shoulder dime to a waiting Bobby Portis Jr., who finishes the possession with a layup. It was another typical night at the office for the two-time MVP, who finished the November 14, 2022 game with 27 points, eight rebounds and four assists.

Fresh off achieving a national championship in college, Christian Braun has brought an unselfish, winning style of basketball with him to the Denver Nuggets. Against the Utah Jazz, the rookie shows he’s willing to do whatever it takes to secure a victory, fearlessly stepping in front of Malik Beasley to turn a wide-open dunk into a ferocious rejection. Braun continued to make an impact off the Nuggets bench, chipping in 10 points, six rebounds, an assist and a block in Denver’s 117-101 triumph on October 28, 2022.

In just his sixth professional game, Mark Williams gave the Charlotte Hornets an exciting glimpse into their future. Making his Top Shot debut, the 15th overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft sends a Josh Giddey shot into the crowd with a merciless rejection at the rim. Williams shot a sparkling 7-for-7 for a career-high 17 points and 13 rebounds, along with two assists, two steals and two blocks in 21 productive minutes off the bench in his squad’s 121–113 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder on December 29, 2022.

Charging straight into the lane against three San Antonio Spurs defenders is not for the faint of heart — but it is for Zion Williamson. The New Orleans Pelicans All-Star forward scoops up a bounce pass on the elbow and makes his move, putting the ball on the floor and muscling his way to a layup despite spinning his way into a traffic jam underneath the basket. Williamson poured in a season-high 32 points on 14-of-18 from the field to go along with 11 rebounds and two steals in his squad’s 129-110 win on November 23, 2022.

Donovan Mitchell’s honeymoon with the Cleveland Cavaliers continued against the Los Angeles Lakers. Taking advantage of a favorable one-on-one matchup with Austin Reaves, Mitchell hits his defender with some slick dribbles before suddenly pulling up for a stepback triple that helps the Cavs pull away late in the fourth quarter. Mitchell logged his second 40-point performance of the season, posting 43 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals in Cleveland’s 116-102 triumph on December 6, 2022.

Never underestimate James Harden’s ability to come up with creative new ways of making plays for his Philadelphia 76ers teammates. Back in Houston on the court he called home for parts of nine seasons, the 2018 MVP shifts into facilitator mode when he whips a low-to-the-ground bounce pass to a cutting Shake Milton, who finishes the possession with an easy layup. The 10-time All-Star managed 21 points, four rebounds, seven assists, two steals and four triples in Philly’s overtime battle against the Houston Rockets on December 5, 2022.

One year after his breakout campaign, Jordan Poole continues to evolve offensively. Pressed into starting duty for a resting Klay Thompson, the fourth-year guard keeps the Golden State Warriors offense humming with a strong drive into the paint before dropping off a beauty of a behind-the-back no-look pass to a cutting Jonathan Kuminga. Poole’s 21 points, two rebounds, five assists and five three-pointers helped deliver the Warriors a 120-101 win over the Houston Rockets on December 3, 2022.

Scottie Barnes’ ability to impact a game on multiple fronts is what won him the NBA Rookie of the Year award. In Year 2, it’s clear that this is still very much the case. Competing against the Detroit Pistons, Barnes takes a pass in stride while driving into the lane, then drops off a slick one-handed bounce pass while airborne to a cutting Dalano Banton. Barnes’ eight points, five rebounds, four assists, one steal and one block made a major impact in Toronto’s 115-111 victory on November 14, 2022.

Almost a quarter of the way into the 2022-23 season, one thing has become clear — if Jericho Sims is on the court, he’s probably going to dunk on you. The New York Knicks’ reserve center continues to be his squad’s resident alley-oop recipient, this time against the Utah Jazz as he gets teed up for a perfectly-executed lob from Immanuel Quickley. The second-year big man was strong in 25 productive minutes, making 5-of-7 field-goal attempts for 11 points, while adding 13 rebounds, two assists and a steal in the Knicks’ 118-111 road win on November 15, 2022.

In year 15, Russell Westbrook can still turn any pass on the court into an assist. The Detroit Pistons learned that the hard way as Westbrook — inbounding far away from the basket — needed less than two seconds to whip a three-quarter court laser into the hands of Lonnie Walker IV, who buries the catch-and-shoot triple to beat the halftime buzzer. Ten of Westbrook’s game-high 12 assists came in the first half, as the nine-time All-Star added 10 points and five rebounds in the Los Angeles Lakers’ 128-121 victory on November 18, 2022.

Now that’s how you announce your presence to the rest of the league. A year after averaging just three points per game in less than eight minutes a night, Nick Richards has burst on to the scene for the Charlotte Hornets in the early stages of the 2022-23 season. After erupting for 19 points and 10 rebounds in the season opener, the reserve center one-ups himself against the Atlanta Hawks. Executing a flawless pick-and-roll with fellow reserve James Bouknight, Richards takes a bounce pass from his teammate and rises up for an emphatic one-handed slam. It was a perfect game for Richards, who made all nine of his field goal attempts in a 20-point, 11-rebound, two-block effort in 20 efficient minutes in Charlotte’s 126-109 win on October 23, 2022.

Jamal Murray looks like his old self again, which is bad news for the rest of the league. Against the Los Angeles Lakers, the Denver point guard uses a pick from Nikola Jokić to gain access into the lane. Met by a wall of defenders, Murray wisely passes up the shot attempt and instead opts for an acrobatic dish to his MVP teammate, who punctuates the possession with a floater. Murray produced 13 points, four rebounds, six assists and two steals in helping Denver prevail 110-99 on October 26, 2022.

Eager to help out a Los Angeles Lakers team hungry for a victory early in the season, free agent acquisition Lonnie Walker IV knew just how to deliver. Getting out in space against the New Orleans Pelicans thanks to an outlet pass from LeBron James, Walker IV rewards the Lakers’ faith by taking flight and throwing down a vicious one-hand slam over Jose Alvarado. Walker IV deposited 28 points, grabbed three rebounds and buried five triples in his new team’s thrilling 120-117 overtime triumph on November 2, 2022.

After taking the G League by storm with his explosive scoring prowess, Jaden Hardy was ready for the big stage. The Dallas Mavericks rookie introduces himself to the New Orleans Pelicans in style, using his momentum to blow by Kira Lewis Jr. with his left hand into the lane before switching to his right and finishing with an up-and-under layup around Willy Hernangomez. Hardy matched his career-high with 15 points on 7 for 9 shooting while adding two steals in his squad’s 127-117 win on January 7, 2023.

New season, same results for Andrew Wiggins and the Golden State Warriors. Fresh off a transformative title run a season ago, Wiggins and company are back to defend the crown. Against an overmatched Sacramento Kings squad, the 2022 All-Star shows last year’s postseason run was no fluke, stepping into a passing lane and picking off a lazy pass. Wiggins is off to the races from there, finishing the fast break with a slam en route 24 points, five rebounds, three steals and two blocks in Golden State’s 130-125 victory on October 23, 2022.

In just his second game back from an injury that caused him to miss all but nine games a year ago, Michael Porter Jr. has opened the 2022-23 season looking very much like his old self. Drawing one of the game’s toughest defensive assignments in Steph Curry, Porter Jr. doesn’t flinch, staying in lockstep with the four-time champion and two-time MVP on his path to the basket, swatting Curry’s shot with authority. Porter Jr. brought it on the offensive end too, contributing 17 points and six rebounds in the Denver Nuggets’ 128-123 road win at the defending champion Golden State Warriors on October 21, 2022.

Steph Curry never has been one to shy away from putting his legendary range on display. In a rematch of the 2022 NBA Finals against the Boston Celtics, a Golden State Warriors possession ended with a Curry turnover before the nine-time All-Star quickly redeemed himself by picking Jayson Tatum’s pocket on the counterattack. With the second quarter clock hurtling toward zero, Curry only had time to loft a prayer from beyond halfcourt that of course landed in the bottom of the net. Curry posted a team-high 29 points in the overtime battle while adding four rebounds, seven assists, three steals, two blocks and six 3-pointers on January 19, 2023. 

As the LA Clippers were quick to discover, fancy footwork in the frontcourt is no fun to defend. Now in his second season, Houston Rockets center Alperen Şengün continues to impress — after setting a screen for a teammate, the 6-foot-11 Turkish big man collapses toward the basket and catches a pass in the paint before pivoting around his defender with a nimble spin move. The subsequent layup was good for two of Şengün’s team-high 26 points, and he also chipped in 13 rebounds, two assists and a steal in the November 2, 2022 Western Conference showdown.

After a slow start to the 2022-23 season, the Orlando Magic turned to a fresh face with a unique basketball arsenal to help stop the bleeding. After three seasons with the Denver Nuggets where he was used sparingly, Bol Bol has been unleashed as an important part of the Magic’s present and future. Against the Charlotte Hornets, the spindly 7-foot-2 center catches a pass in the corner and puts the ball on the floor, exhibiting an impressive handle before letting his otherworldly frame do the rest as he launches himself toward the rim and throws down a ferocious slam. Bol’s impact has increased with more playing time, as he contributed 11 points and seven rebounds in 27 minutes in Orlando’s 113-93 win on October 28, 2022.

The Utah Jazz didn’t learn their lesson the first time they tried to trespass in Deandre Ayton’s paint, so he was more than willing to remind them again. Mike Conley gains access to the lane with a pretty crossover move but fails to account for the Phoenix Suns’ center, who viciously denies the attempt. When the deflection falls into Conley’s hands again, he decides to give it another shot and is promptly denied. The Suns lost a heartbreaker, but Ayton pulled his weight with 17 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists and three blocks on November 18, 2022.

Jalen Brunson’s handle is so shifty that even extremely athletic players have trouble keeping up. Jeremy Sochan puts in an admirable effort in trying to stick with the New York Knicks point guard, but Brunson’s bag of tricks proves to be too deep as he eludes the San Antonio Spurs rookie in a man-to-man matchup long enough to bury a mid-range jumper. Brunson erupted for a career-high 38 points on 17 of 27 shooting and the Knicks needed every one of them — along with seven rebounds and six assists — in the 117-114 nail-biting victory on January 4, 2023.

Give me that! Brook Lopez has no time for Houston Rockets guard Jalen Green’s drive to the hoop, literally ripping the ball out of Green’s hands in his attempt to score and needing only one arm to do so. It was a block party for the Milwaukee Bucks’ 15-year veteran, who swatted five shots in the October 22, 2022 contest. The seven-footer did a little bit of everything for the Bucks — in addition to the five blocks, Lopez scored nine points, grabbed five rebounds, dished out two assists, grabbed two steals and sank a trio of three-pointers in Milwaukee’s runaway 125-105 victory.

There’s efficiency… and then there’s Grant Williams. As his Boston Celtics opened the 2022-23 campaign defending their Eastern Conference crown, Williams brought with him some of last season’s magic. Coming off the bench against the rival Philadelphia 76ers, Williams refused to miss, pump faking Shake Milton out of his sneakers while sinking a corner three-pointer. Williams made all five of his field goal attempts — including three triples — along with a rebound and assist in Boston’s 126-117 victory on October 18, 2022.

The game just looks easy when Cade Cunningham is playing with confidence. The first overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft looks to be in his comfort zone with a strong drive to the basket against the Atlanta Hawks, finishing with an underhanded high-arcing scoop shot off the glass in traffic. Cunningham scored 27 of his career-high 35 points in the first half while also chipping in nine rebounds and eight assists for the Detroit Pistons on October 28, 2022.

For the 20th time in his decorated career, Paul George did something most NBA players won’t sniff even once — score 40 points in a game. Against the Sacramento Kings, the seven-time All-Star enters total domination mode, taking a pass atop the key before stepping on the accelerator and hitting the defense with an unguardable spin move en route to two of his 40. The LA Clippers needed every one of them to get past the pesky Kings, as George’s 40 points, six rebounds, six assists and two steals were the difference in the 111-109 road win on October 22, 2022. The output made George the 14th active player to score 40 or more in a game at least 20 times.

The best in the business know how to improvise on the fly — just ask Kawhi Leonard. The two-time champion and NBA Finals MVP triggers his backup plan on a strong drive to the basket, first thinking dunk before deciding on a difficult reverse layup to avoid having his attempt swatted by a trailing Kyle Kuzma. Leonard scored in a variety of ways, tallying a game-high 31 points along with nine rebounds and three steals as his LA Clippers staged a fourth-quarter rally to send the Washington Wizards to their ninth-straight loss, a 102-93 decision on December 17, 2022.

LeBron James has been around long enough to play against fathers and sons, but make no mistake about it: the King is still operating at peak power. James took Jabari Smith Jr. to school 20 years after playing against Smith’s dad in his NBA debut, using a combination of style and strength to get the best of the 19-year-old rookie on a trip up the court before finishing with a thunderous throwdown. It’s safe to say that Kentavious Caldwell-Pope is enjoying his new surroundings in the Mile High City. It’s not difficult to understand why, given Caldwell-Pope is now playing with the Denver Nuggets and two-time MVP Nikola Jokić. Against the Oklahoma City Thunder, Jokić is confronted by a double team, forcing the gifted distributor to sling a cross-court bounce pass to Caldwell-Pope in the corner for a triple that would turn into a four-point play. The 10-year veteran was firing on all cylinders, posting 21 points, with six three-pointers, five rebounds and two assists in Denver’s 122-117 win on October 22, 2022.

Kicking off 2023 in style, Jackson Jr. protects the rim with vigor against the Sacramento Kings when he blocks a driving Malik Monk not once but twice. The Grizzlies’ talented fifth-year power forward made magic happen on both ends of the court, tallying 14 points, seven rebounds, two assists and three rejections in helping his squad win its third consecutive game, a 118-108 decision on January 1, 2023.

If you didn’t know Dalano Banton’s name before, you sure do now. With his shorthanded Toronto Raptors missing three key players against the Detroit Pistons, Banton took the opportunity to introduce himself. The second-year guard was a star on both ends, first creating a steal when he picks rookie Jaden Ivey’s pocket and then capping off the possessions with an emphatic slam on the other end. Banton exploded for a career-high 27 points while also chipping in four rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocks in Toronto’s gritty 115-111 triumph on November 14, 2022.

With the Golden State Warriors playing without Steph Curry and Klay Thompson, Patrick Baldwin Jr. paid homage to his Splash Brothers teammates. The rookie forward was called on for increased minutes for the shorthanded Warriors and delivered from downtown in his Top Shot debut, draining a catch-and-shoot triple off a dump off pass from Anthony Lamb. Eight of the 10 shots Baldwin Jr. attempted were from behind the arc, converting five of them for 17 points along with three rebounds against the Brooklyn Nets on December 21, 2022.

The third-year reserve guard has found his mojo with the Thunder, blowing by Blake Griffin before taking flight and throwing down the hammer over Payton Pritchard. Thomas Bryant proves to be adept at turning garbage into gold for the Los Angeles Lakers when a Dennis Schröder triple is off the mark, grabbing the offensive board through sheer force of will and depositing the put-back for a critical two points. Bryant was brilliant against the Sacramento Kings, tallying 29 points on 12 of 14 shooting to go with 14 rebounds in the Lakers’ nail-biting 136-134 victory on January 7, 2023.

When he’s feeling it from long range, Kevin Love is one of the most feared bench weapons in the NBA. The New York Knicks found that out the hard way, as the five-time All-Star takes a pass on the wing from Donovan Mitchell and buries a contested triple while drawing a foul. Love had a fourth quarter for the ages, connecting on five three-pointers and scoring 16 points as the Cleveland Cavaliers sank the visiting Knicks by out-scoring them by 22 points in the period. All told, Love scored 29 points in just 22 minutes on 8-for-13 from long range while adding eight rebounds in the 121-108 triumph on October 30, 2022.

After being waived by the Philadelphia 76ers a couple of days before the start of the season, Charles Bassey quickly found himself a new home with the San Antonio Spurs. It hasn’t taken long for the second-year reserve center to leave a lasting impression, as he shows off his hustle and defensive aptitude by chasing down George Hill of the Milwaukee Bucks and emphatically spiking his shot attempt into the hardwood. Pressed into starting duty, the second-year guard stepped up in a big way, taking a pass in the corner before making his move toward the basket and throwing down a ferocious slam. Murphy III made all eight of his field-goal attempts — including four triples — as well as both free throws en route to 22 points and five rebounds in his squad’s exciting 113-111 win on October 25, 2022.

In James Harden’s return to Brooklyn, Joel Embiid helped his teammate pick up a win against his old squad. The Philadelphia 76ers point guard inbounded the basketball to Embiid, who decided he wanted to fire from long range as he took two dribbles backward and nailed one of Harden’s patented step-back 3-pointers. In another monster season for Embiid, the six-time All-Star overwhelmed the Brooklyn Nets with 37 points on 12 of 18 shooting and added 13 rebounds, two assists and two steals in the 101-98 victory on February 11, 2023.

In the first start of his NBA career, Santi Aldama instantly rewards the Memphis Grizzlies’ faith in his ability to fill in for the injured Jaren Jackson Jr. After showing isolated flashes as a rookie, the 21-year-old from Spain has clearly elevated his game in Year 2, putting himself in the perfect spot when a triple team envelops teammate Steven Adams. Aldama makes the New York Knicks pay for leaving him open, finishing the play with a one-handed slam, two of his 18 points to go with a career-high 11 rebounds in Memphis’ 115-112 overtime win on October 19, 2022.

As long as it goes in it doesn’t matter how you got there. Locked in a tight battle against the Memphis Grizzlies, Marcus Smart drives into the lane before coming head-to-head with Santi Aldama. Smart absorbs a body blow that sends him toppling to the hardwood and on the way down flicks up a desperation shot that somehow finds the bottom of the net. The underrated Boston Celtics point guard produced a solid all-around game with 15 points, seven rebounds and 12 assists in his team’s hard-fought 109-106 victory on November 7, 2022.

The Washington Wizards thought they had a driving layup attempt in the bag — only Aaron Gordon had other ideas. Deni Avdija looks like he has a clear path to the rim against the Denver Nuggets, that is until Gordon springs from behind to deny the attempt with a clean block off the glass. The Denver forward played with swagger on both ends of the court, producing 22 points, seven rebounds and three assists in his squad’s 141-128 victory on December 14, 2022.

On the 26-year anniversary of his legendary head coach’s first game with the San Antonio Spurs, 23-year-old Romeo Langford had the best game of his four-year career. Langford gives Gregg Popovich a night for both of them to remember, blowing by Tyler Herro on a baseline dribble-drive before converting an athletic left-handed layup while somehow staying inbounds. Langford scored a career-best 19 points to go with six rebounds, a steal and a block in the Spurs’ 115-111 road victory over the Miami Heat on December 10, 2022.

After a midseason trade brought him from the Phoenix Suns to the Indiana Pacers in Feb. 2022, Jalen Smith’s scoring average more than doubled, jumping from six per game to better than 13 in 22 games. With the 2022-23 season underway, Smith is here to say there’s plenty more where that came from. Detroit Pistons rookie Jaden Ivey receives a rude awakening when he attempts to put Smith on a poster, as the Pacers big man denies Ivey with a ferocious block at the rim. Smith produced a dominant performance — 19 points, 15 rebounds and three blocks to help Indiana win its first game of the season, a 124-115 triumph on October 22, 2022.

Kenyon Martin Jr. puts his athleticism on display against the Orlando Magic, exhibiting extreme hustle on the defensive end by racing the length of the court and recording a devastating chasedown block. The Houston Rockets forward helped his squad snap a six-game losing streak with a huge night off the bench, tallying 21 points, four rebounds, five assists, two blocks and four three-pointers in a much-needed 134-127 road triumph on November 7, 2022.

Bench players unafraid to take clutch shots can separate good teams from special ones, and Chris Boucher shows no fear against the Dallas Mavericks with the game on the line. With his team clinging to a one-point lead late in the fourth quarter, the sixth-year reserve forward helps the Toronto Raptors out in a big way by draining a tough fadeaway from the paint over Reggie Bullock. It was a dagger that kept the game out of reach, as Boucher’s 22-point, 13-rebound effort was crucial in Toronto’s 105-100 triumph on November 26, 2022.

From there, all that’s left to do is force overtime, which Russell accomplishes with an open 14-footer with 4.4 seconds remaining. Charlotte’s Jalen McDaniels decides to take a run at Robinson, driving hard to the basket only to be met at the rim by the New York Knicks center, who rejects the basketball with such force that it careens into the front row. A fired up Mitchell made all four of his field goal attempts for nine points, eight rebounds, six blocks and an assist, helping the Knicks outlast the Hornets 134-131 in the October 26, 2022 overtime battle.

In his first game with the Phoenix Suns after a four-year run with the Golden State Warriors, Lee makes Suns fans elated that he’s on their side. Tied in the final seconds of a fourth-quarter battle, Lee takes a pass from three-time All-Star Devin Booker and makes his move, driving with determination toward the basket and draining a difficult game-winning fall-away jumper with 9.7 seconds left. Lee scored 11 points off the bench — all in the fourth quarter — to go with two rebounds and two assists in helping the Suns erase a 22-point third-quarter deficit to stun the Dallas Mavericks 107-105 on October 19, 2022.

When Yuta Watanabe gets the ball in his hands, he hesitates for a moment before deciding to pull up from deep himself. The fifth-year forward and first-year Net connected on 5-of-7 field goals off the bench — all from behind the arc — for 20 points, seven rebounds and two assists in the November 17, 2022 victory.

With his Golden State Warriors clinging to a two-point lead in the final minute, DiVincenzo strips Damian Lillard before hustling back on offense to stay ready. He doesn’t have to wait long, as the fifth-year guard pulls up for a straightaway catch-and-shoot three to bury the hopes of the Portland Trail Blazers. Filling in admirably for an absent Steph Curry, DiVincenzo’s nine points, nine rebounds, four assists, four steals and one clutch three-pointer were the catalyst in his squad’s 118-112 win on December 30, 2022.

Whether he’s facilitating for his Charlotte Hornets teammates or creating the offense himself, LaMelo Ball is a dynamic playmaker with the ball in his hands. The 2022 All-Star continued turning heads against the Boston Celtics in his third season as he unleashed a slippery spin move that Sam Hauser couldn’t keep up with before finishing the possession with a step-back 3-pointer. Ball tallied 24 points and came up just short of a triple-double by adding nine rebounds and 10 assists in the February 10, 2023 Eastern Conference showdown.

When confident shooters keep firing, the results inevitably follow. Continuing to make progress as an offensive player in the third year of his career, Killian Hayes steps up for the Detroit Pistons, coming up clutch in overtime against the Dallas Mavericks. After breaking a tie with a triple on the preceding possession, the seventh-overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft does it again and puts the game out of reach by burying a step-back dagger with 41.6 seconds remaining. The third-year pro connected on 10 of his 13 shots in the game, scoring eight of his 22 points in overtime while also adding four rebounds and eight assists in Detroit’s 131-125 win on December 1, 2022.

After arriving via trade in Jan. 2022, a shoulder injury cut Cam Reddish’s run with the New York Knicks short after just 15 games. Now that he’s healthy again, the rest of the league better watch out. Against the Memphis Grizzlies in New York’s first game of the 2022-23 season, Reddish wastes little time reintroducing himself to the basketball world, drifting into the corner to catch a pass from Jalen Brunson and sinking a contested three-pointer with three seconds left in regulation to force overtime. Although the Knicks lost the game, the Big Apple was surely buzzing after Reddish put up 22 points, five rebounds, three steals and a block on 9-of-15 shooting off the bench in the October 19, 2022 battle.

In a superstar-driven league, the Boston Celtics have one of the best ones out there. An All-Star four times all before the age of 25, Jayson Tatum kept up his high level of play against the Detroit Pistons when he beat a pair of defenders on a dribble drive to the basket. The sixth-year forward dazzled with a highlight-reel between-the-legs maneuver before he finished the play with a crossover into a running layup for two of his game-high 38 points on 15 of 24 from the field and 6 of 10 from downtown. Playing against the upstart Sacramento Kings, the Charlotte Hornets center shows off an effective, if unorthodox, shooting touch that has to be seen to be believed. Don’t like what you see? Plumlee racked up 15 points on 7 of 8 shooting in Charlotte’s much-needed 125-119 victory on December 19, 2022 proving that shooting left has never felt so right.

No inbound is a given when Jose Alvarado is on the prowl. The New Orleans Pelicans reserve guard is a bundle of energy whenever he’s on the court, not to mention waiting for the offense to make a mistake that he can capitalize on. Following a made free throw by Zion Williamson, the Houston Rockets throw the ball in while expecting to begin the next possession. But Alvarado has other ideas, picking Kevin Porter Jr.’s pocket, ending up with a steal and layup in the blink of an eye. Alvarado gave a huge lift to the second unit, converting 5-of-6 field-goal attempts for 12 points, two rebounds, five assists and three steals in 20 minutes amidst a 119-106 victory on November 12, 2022.

Now on his fifth team in five seasons, Isaiah Hartenstein seems to be finding a home with the New York Knicks. Playing against the Boston Celtics, Hartenstein shows off his fundamentals, crashing the boards and turning a Jalen Brunson misfire into a one-handed put-back slam right on top of a helpless opponent. In a 38-minute run for Hartenstein, the big man made five of his six field goals for 10 points, while adding 14 rebounds, an assist and a block in the November 5, 2022 Atlantic Division showdown.

The fifth-year guard known for his defensive prowess shows he can score the ball just as well against the Oklahoma City Thunder, pump faking a defender before putting the ball on the floor and going up strong against another challenger at the rim for a hard-earned layup. Carter doubled his previous season-high point total, erupting for a career-high 36 to go along with four rebounds, a career-best 12 assists and five three-pointers in Milwaukee’s marathon 136-132 double-overtime win on November 9, 2022.

It’s no secret that the Brooklyn Nets have plenty of star power but the true strength of any team with lofty expectations comes from its depth. Enter Royce O’Neale, who joined the Nets after spending his first five seasons as a role player with the Utah Jazz. Clinging to a one-point lead in the waning seconds of the fourth quarter, O’Neale takes a pass from Kyrie Irving on the wing and calmly buries a 25-foot dagger to sink the Toronto Raptors and deliver Brooklyn its first victory of the 2022-23 season. O’Neale scattered seven points, four rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks in the 109-105 triumph on October 21, 2022.

When his superstar teammate fails to convert a wide-open layup, Josh Green is there to provide a spark off the Dallas Mavericks’ bench. Following a rare point-blank miss from Luka Dončić, the Mavericks maintain possession thanks to a fortuitous deflection off the offensive glass. Aiming to take advantage of the second chance, Green breaks toward the basket and gets a perfect feed in stride from Maxi Kleber before throwing down a vicious two-handed slam. Grant’s clutch shot — as well as his 16 points, two rebounds and an assist — earned the Portland Trail Blazers their third straight win to open the season, a thrilling 106-104 victory on October 23, 2022.

Caleb Martin is among the latest examples, as the fourth-year undrafted forward steps up in a big way against the Atlanta Hawks. Supporting the Heat without Jimmy Butler, Martin brings toughness and grit to the floor as he drifts over as a help defender to deny Onyeka Okongwu with a block from behind. Martin brought it on both ends, scoring 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting while adding nine rebounds, four assists and two steals in Miami’s 106-98 come-from-behind win on November 27, 2022.

The 2022-23 Minnesota Timberwolves were designed to win by the strength of their star-laden starting lineup — which makes the continued progression of Jaylen Nowell a most welcome surprise. Playing with raised confidence against the San Antonio Spurs, Nowell takes a pass at the top of the key and immediately turns on the jets toward the basket before taking flight and throwing down a backboard-shaking slam. The fourth-year reserve guard made a tremendous impact, tallying 23 points, four rebounds and two assists in 22 minutes off the bench in Minnesota’s 134-122 victory on October 26, 2022.

The Miami Heat were playing without their top three scorers — but they still had Kyle Lowry on their side. With only seven healthy players against the Washington Wizards, the Heat needed their veteran point guard to empty the tank and he was happy to oblige. The six-time All-Star drives with determination into the lane, sidesteps a couple of defenders then rises up on the baseline to drain a 19-footer over the much taller Kristaps Porziņģis. Though they’d ultimately come up short, Lowry’s 24 points, 10 rebounds, 15 assists, two blocks and a steal kept the Heat in the fight on November 18, 2022.

Spencer Dinwiddie cares very little about height differences, as the Dallas Mavericks guard drives strong into the lane and takes flight before throwing down a ferocious one-handed dunk over the Milwaukee Bucks center. In addition to his throwdown, Dinwiddie’s night featured 15 points, four rebounds, four assists, a steal and a block on December 9, 2022.

The 26th overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft made the most of his opportunity, scoring seven points, grabbing three rebounds and dishing out two assists in Minnesota’s 109-101 win on November 30, 2022.

Eager to make an early-season impact on a slow-starting Orlando Magic squad, fifth-year center Mo Bamba takes matters into his own hands against the visiting Charlotte Hornets, using every inch of his 7-foot frame to throw down a monstrous dunk over Jalen McDaniels. It was an incredibly-efficient 17 minutes off the bench for Bamba, who made eight of his 12 shots for 19 points, along with six rebounds, an assist and three blocks in Orlando’s first win of the season on October 28, 2022.

After his New York Knicks got into an early 15-point hole in the first quarter, Immanuel Quickley ensured there would be no repeat occurrence. The third-year reserve guard has a sizzling second frame against the Boston Celtics, looking for space to operate at the top of the key before handing off to Jalen Brunson. Brunson gives it right back and Quickley delivers, burying a long straightaway three-pointer — the final bucket of a 15-point quarter for Quickley, who tallied 17 points and five rebounds off the bench in helping his squad knock off the Celtics 120-117 in overtime on January 26, 2023.

Driving into the trenches to take on two stellar defenders isn’t easy — and that’s just the way Jimmy Butler likes it. Butler came up huge in the clutch against his former team as he converted an acrobatic reverse layup despite being sandwiched between Joel Embiid and P.J. Tucker. The clutch shot gave Butler’s Miami Heat a one-point lead with less than two minutes to play and ensured the Philadelphia 76ers would never lead again. The six-time All-Star made 9 of 14 shots for a team-high 23 points while adding 11 rebounds, nine assists and four steals in his team’s thrilling 101-99 win on February 27, 2023.

Talk about teamwork and athleticism in their finest forms. With the Washington Wizards missing their top two scorers in a home game against the Dallas Mavericks, Rui Hachimura was more than willing to step up in an all-hands-on-deck scenario. Teammate Kyle Kuzma gets the play started, gaining access to the paint with a dribble drive and spin move before he’s enveloped by three defenders. Ever the cool customer, Kuzma dumps off an opportune pass to Hachimura, who goes up, under and up again in order to get a reverse layup to fall. Hachimura produced a season-high 23 points along with eight rebounds off the bench for the shorthanded Wizards in the November 10, 2022 victory.

Having a marksman like Seth Curry coming off your bench is practically unfair. The Brooklyn Nets guard shows off his family trade against the Portland Trail Blazers, coming around a screen and swishing a triple despite defender Anfernee Simons in his face. It was a classic night beyond the arc for Curry, who connected on 11-of-15 field goals – and 7-of-10 from downtown – for 29 points in 29 minutes of action in Brooklyn’s 111-97 victory on November 27, 2022.

Aaron Nesmith barely missed. Neither did his teammates, which spelled trouble for the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Indiana Pacers are happy Nesmith is theirs after two seasons with the Boston Celtics, as the third-year forward begins in the corner before driving with purpose along the baseline and finishes with a powerful right-handed slam over a helpless defender. Nesmith scored 22 points on 7 of 10 from the field, contributing nicely to his squad’s .565 shooting night as Indiana claimed a 135-126 triumph on December 29, 2022.

Acquiring Kelly Olynyk right before the 2022-23 season began is already paying major dividends for the Utah Jazz. Trailing by one late in overtime in the team’s third game of the new campaign, Olynyk grabs the inbound pass and makes his move, dribbling with determination into the lane before unfurling a game-winning driving scoop shot with three seconds remaining to sink the New Orleans Pelicans. Olynyk’s 20-point, three-rebound, five-assist effort was instrumental in the thrilling 122-121 win on October 23, 2022, not to mention keeping the Jazz a perfect 3-0 to start the season.
