Though that prospect may be hard to believe, the Brooklyn Nets got the full experience on October 27, 2022. Dončić reminds everybody that he can score every which way, from step-back triples to impossible-to-defend dribble drives that result in easy layups and floaters. The fifth-year star also remains an elite facilitator, as he nonchalantly sets up his teammates with a plethora of highlight-reel passes: an over-the-head no-look dish to Maxi Kleber, a spin-turned-kickout to Tim Hardaway Jr. and a behind-the-back dropoff to Reggie Bullock. When the final horn sounded, the Dallas Mavericks walked off with a 129-125 overtime road victory thanks to 41 points, 11 rebounds, 14 assists and three steals from Dončić, becoming just the 10th player in NBA history to record three 40-point triple-doubles.

When your blocked shots have visibly notable exit velocity, you’re doing something right on defense. Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James, already an all-time chasedown block artist, picks up a surging Collin Sexton in transition then launches his layup attempt to the scorers’ table in a January 25, 2021 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

That’s my quarterback! LeBron James sizes up a defensive rebound as it caroms off the rim then immediately throws a perfect spiral down the court to a streaking Kentavious Caldwell-Pope on January 10, 2021. James put up 18 points, seven rebounds and seven assists in the Los Angeles Lakers’ win over the Houston Rockets.

The first six minutes of Jalen Williams’ career turned out to be pretty perfect. After the Oklahoma City Thunder made him the 12th pick in the draft, Williams rewards their faith, passing up a three-point attempt to instead take a run right at Karl-Anthony Towns. Williams puts the ball on the floor with his left hand, driving hard toward the basket and getting the best of the Minnesota Timberwolves’ three-time All-Star with a baseline floater. Williams made both of his field-goal attempts and added an assist during his October 19, 2022 professional debut.

Adding Jaden Ivey to a Detroit Pistons team loaded with young talent has brought basketball excitement back to the Motor City. Despite it being his first career NBA game, the rookie point guard looked at ease in his debut against the Orlando Magic. When a steal lands in his hands, the lightning-quick Ivey is off to the races leading the counterattack, dropping an underhanded scoop pass to teammate Saddiq Bey for a transition layup less than two minutes into his NBA career. Ivey played with the poise of a veteran, tallying 19 points, three rebounds, four assists and three steals in a 113-109 Pistons victory on October 19, 2022.

It took all of one game for Jabari Smith Jr. to make an immediate impact with the Houston Rockets. A few months after Houston made him the third pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, the 6-foot-11 rookie rewards his team’s faith in him by showcasing his deft shooting touch from long range. Against the Atlanta Hawks in his first professional game, Smith Jr. crosses halfcourt, takes a pass from a teammate and without hesitation rises up from way behind the arc to drain one of his three triples. The Rockets may have lost the game, but they left Atlanta feeling confident about the future after Smith Jr. posted 17 points and seven rebounds on October 19, 2022.

A double-double in your NBA debut? Not too shabby for Utah Jazz rookie Walker Kessler, who came to play in his first career game against the Denver Nuggets. The 7-footer runs the floor with teammate Collin Sexton, who drops off a pass at the foul line and leaves Kessler face-to-face with two-time reigning MVP Nikola Jokić. Kessler shows no fear, taking one dribble before pivoting his way around the Joker for a hard-earned layup. The 22nd-overall pick made all five of his field-goal attempts for 12 points while adding 10 rebounds, an assist and a steal, helping Utah prevail 123-102 on October 19, 2022.

Despite not suiting up during his lone college campaign last season, Shaedon Sharpe was more than ready for his NBA debut. The Portland Trail Blazers’ prized rookie shows no evidence of rust against the Sacramento Kings, casually shaking off his defender and draining a corner triple off an inbound pass. Sharpe made a major impact in just 16 minutes off the bench, scoring 12 points — shooting 3-for-3 on three-pointers — and adding two rebounds in a 115-108 win on October 19, 2022.

The San Antonio Spurs have always gravitated toward unselfish offensive players who bring a gritty intensity to the defensive end. Jeremy Sochan fits the blueprint like a glove and is already fitting seamlessly into the Spurs’ system. With the ball in his hands, Sochan passes off to a teammate before dropping down into the post and immediately taking it back to deposit for an and-one opportunity at the rim. The rookie forward made a solid first impression, posting four points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals against the Charlotte Hornets on October 19, 2022.

In his rise toward superstardom, Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry has become most-known for his three-point shooting and the fear it strikes in opposing defenses. That said, you don’t become a multi-time NBA champion without knowing how to make critical plays on the defensive end, too. Taking on the challenge of guarding Memphis Grizzlies’ guard Ja Morant with the game down to a single shot, Curry mirrors him perfectly before meeting him at the launch point for a game-saving block. The two-time MVP chipped in with 24 points, five triples, three rebounds and four assists helping the Warriors throw the first haymaker of the series with a 117-116 win on May 1, 2022.

There are three-point shooters who change games, and three-point shooters who change the game. Steph Curry is definitively the latter. In a home opener to kick off another potential MVP season, the Golden State Warriors guard pushes the ball up the court and heaves it to a teammate in the corner. Curry then chases his own pass and calls for the ball back to sink a high-flying, catch-and-shoot triple. The seven-time All-Star hit his first 10 field goals of the night on October 21, 2021, while pouring in 25 of his 45 points in the first quarter alone.

History hits different at home. Embattled in a heated Game 1 matchup against a Brooklyn Nets team once considered a title favorite, Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum sent the loudest conceivable message to the basketball world watching, capping off an instant-classic display of ball movement with a game-winning, spinning layup off glass just as the final horn sounded on April 17, 2022. Tatum’s late bucket marks Boston’s first game-winning playoff buzzer beater on home soil in the franchise’s 75-year history.

With his team in danger of dropping two series-opening games on their home floor, Ja Morant decided it was time to score by any means, even if it meant putting a defender on that very floor. Trailing 99-98 with under two minutes to go, the Memphis Grizzlies guard calls an isolation before slicing a Golden State Warriors defender with a rhythmic-crossover-half-spin combination before dropping in a floater to give his team a lead they would never again surrender. Morant added to his big-game profile on May 3, 2022, with 47 points, eight rebounds and eight assists in a 106-101 win to tie the series at one game apiece.

When the Golden State Warriors get a numbers advantage on the break, it’s wise to get your cameras ready. Taking advantage of a teammate’s excellent defense, Warriors rookie forward Jonathan Kuminga leaks out in transition, outrunning each of the Sacramento Kings players down the floor before starting up his own in-game Slam Dunk Contest with a show-stopping reverse cradle jam. Kuminga had highlights in abundance with 18 points, seven rebounds and a steal in a 126-114 victory on February 3, 2022.

Fueled by competitiveness and his basketball IQ, there are no matchups too big for Golden State Warriors defensive powerhouse Draymond Green. Holding a 116-111 lead in the fourth quarter of Game 3 of the First Round, everyone in the arena knew where the Denver Nuggets would go with the ball next. Outsized by a skilled and strong Nikola Jokić, Green stands his ground before perfectly timing a reach to come up with a game-sealing steal to push his team to a 118-113 win and a 3-0 series lead. The six-time All-Defensive teamer was everywhere on April 21, 2022 with six points, five rebounds, 10 assists and two steals.

It’s Year 15 and Kevin Durant can still make jaws hit the floor with his ability to dominate a basketball game. The Orlando Magic were the 12-time All-Star’s latest victim, as Durant picks them apart in a variety of ways — on offense, he reaches into his bag of tricks for a one-handed floater off the glass, a spot-up triple, a dribble-drive into a baseline fall-away jumper and an open mid-range shot off a behind-the-back maneuver. The two-time champion and Finals MVP comes up big on the defensive end as well, turning a rebound into a long outlet dish to Joe Harris while also blocking a shot and picking Franz Wagner’s pocket at halfcourt en route to a slam. When it was over, Durant lit Orlando up for 45 points on 19-of-24 shooting while also chipping in seven rebounds, five assists, two steals and two blocks in the 109-102 win on November 28, 2022.

Revenge is a dish best served at the buzzer. Knotted in the final seconds of an overtime battle against the Toronto Raptors, Philadelphia 76ers big man Joel Embiid darts into position after a sideline timeout, grabs the rock with a hair over two seconds on the clock, then pulls up for a game-sealing triple on a court he has his share of history with. Embiid put up 33 points and 13 rebounds in the Game 3 victory on April 20, 2022.

Golden State Warriors superstar Steph Curry has naturally creative instincts as a passer, with the patience and skill to improvise and make a pinpoint dime. He scoops up an errant feed, takes a slight dribble and lofts a beautiful, two-handed, over-the-head dish to a wide open Jordan Poole for a breakaway slam. Curry dropped a game-high 10 assists to go along with 24 points, six rebounds and three steals in a road matchup against the Charlotte Hornets on November 14, 2021.

Sometimes, the difference between a star and a full-on superstar can be found through how a player responds in must-win games with the season on the line. Down 3-2 against the defending NBA champions on their own home court, Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum showed which type he was in Game 6. Working against a taxing Bucks defense late in the game, Tatum finds an extra gear, rejecting a pick-and-roll on the way to the basket before exploding through with a strong, and-one layup in traffic, pushing the Celtics’ lead to 13 with two minutes to go. Forcing Game 7, Tatum pieced together a 46-point, nine-rebound, four-assist game with seven triples on May 13, 2022.

If you’re gonna make a run at the Golden State Warriors, you’d better at least come equipped with a generational scorer capable of hitting any shot. Working off a drag screen near half court, Dallas Mavericks star guard Luka Dončić proves to be that guy, blowing by a defender on a pick-and-roll switch before hitting an off-balanced, high-arching leaner. Though ultimately for naught, Dončić’s efforts helped provide a small comeback scare. The All-Star finished his most successful season with 28 points, nine rebounds, six assists, three triples and one steal on May 26, 2022. 

Rookies aren’t expected to make a big impact in the playoffs but it’s clear Jose Alvarado had other plans. Using his viral sneak-steal, the undersized menace preys on one of the NBA’s greatest floor generals with an incredible defensive play, leading to an easy score the other way. The play helped halt any comeback attempt from the Phoenix Suns, as the Pelicans marched to a 118-103 win to even the First Round series up at 2-2. Alvarado chipped in five points, two rebounds and a pair of key fourth-quarter swipes on April 24, 2022.

Although there are plenty of new faces on the Utah Jazz, Lauri Markkanen and his teammates look like they have been playing together for years. Markkanen makes an impact right away with his new squad following a season with the Cleveland Cavaliers, taking a pass in the corner, where he’s immediately confronted by two-time reigning MVP Nikola Jokić. Thinking quickly on his feet, Markkanen fires a one-handed missile into the other corner, where fellow new arrival Collin Sexton is waiting to drain the triple. The Finnish big man contributed 17 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals, kicking off a new era of Jazz basketball with a 123-102 rout of the Denver Nuggets on October 19, 2022.

From second-round pick to immediate rotation contributor — not too shabby for Andrew Nembhard. The first pick of the 2022 NBA Draft’s second round showcases his unselfish playmaking ability against the San Antonio Spurs, driving just inside the three-point arc before flicking a beauty of an alley-oop pass to fellow reserve Isaiah Jackson for the throwdown. Nembhard logged 30 minutes of action in his NBA debut, contributing 14 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals in the October 21, 2022 contest.

Give and you shall receive, or such was the case for Gary Payton II, who happened to be in position for the biggest shot of his professional career in the fourth quarter of Game 5 of the First Round. Following a series of extra passes, Payton finds himself open with the ball, then stabilizes for a three-pointer that extends the Golden State Warriors’ lead to five, effectively sealing the series over the Denver Nuggets. Payton was dependable and excellent, with 15 points on six-of-eight shooting and three triples in a 102-98 victory on April 27, 2022.

While the Los Angeles Lakers have endured a slow start to the 2022-23 season, the same cannot be said for Anthony Davis. Now in his fourth season in Tinseltown, the eight-time All-Star treats the Phoenix Suns to a vintage performance of total domination in which he impacts every facet of the game. The 2020 NBA champion unselfishly distributes to his teammates, mercilessly blocks shots and creates steals on the defensive end while muscling his way to an enormous quantity of rebounds. Davis scores at will too, from strong drives to the hoop to cleaning up messes under the glass. Doing it all for the Lakers on both ends with LeBron James unavailable, Davis poured in 37 points on 11-of-17 from the field and 15-for-16 from the line, chipping in an absurd 21 boards, two assists, five steals and five blocks in the November 22, 2022 divisional showdown.

After staking his claim as the NBA’s best late-game scorer in the regular season, it was only right that Chicago Bulls star guard DeMar DeRozan have that opportunity in the postseason. Up three with 30 seconds to go in Game 2 of the First Round, the five-time All-Star called his own number, attacking the rim with aggression on the way to a cold-blooded game-clincher over and around the Milwaukee Bucks defense. DeRozan was spectacular, tallying 41 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two blocks in the 114-110 victory to even the series at one game apiece on April 20, 2022.

Second time's the charm. Seeking the first points of his NBA career, Nikola Jović couldn’t believe his good fortune when he found himself wide open under the basket. The Miami Heat puts up a shot attempt then recovers an offensive board in time to convert the putback opportunity. It was the only basket of the night for the 27th-overall pick in the draft, who finished with two points, two rebounds and a steal in 14 minutes of action in Miami’s 119-98 road victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on October 26, 2022.

When defending the Golden State Warriors’ talented offense, prepare to be attacked from every angle. Dazzling as a scorer in his first postseason, Jordan Poole shows off his playmaking skills, splitting through a double drag screen before shipping a smooth delivery to his cutting teammate for a jam. Poole proved instrumental in erasing a 19-point first half deficit. The brilliant two-guard needed just 10 shots for 23 points, adding five assists and two steals in a 126-117 win on May 20, 2022.

You’ll never forget your first field goal in the NBA, so go ahead and make it as memorable as possible. Second-round draft pick Christian Koloko immediately showcases his hustle and court awareness for the Toronto Raptors, dutifully tracking teammate Pascal Siakam’s path to the basket and throwing down a monstrous putback dunk when the shot rims out. Koloko scored three points while adding six rebounds and a block in 15 energetic minutes off the bench in Toronto’s 108-105 opening-night win over the Cleveland Cavaliers on October 19, 2022.

Can't stop him, can only hope to contain him! Minnesota has all hands on deck trying to deter reigning NBA Finals MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo, who instead takes only a few motions to gather, hang & hammer home his own miss.

He may be the Defensive Player of the Year but Boston Celtics guard Marcus Smart is more than willing to step up on offensive end when his number’s called. With his team in dire need of a final bucket to bury the Brooklyn Nets in Game 2 of the First Round of the 2022 NBA Playoffs, Smart utilizes a quick first step to creep into the lane, setting himself up for a tough left-handed floater over the outstretched arms of three defenders. After the bucket, the two-way veteran couldn’t help but gaze at his hand in awe, and teammate Jaylen Brown joined the party. Smart hit the biggest shot of the night and helped secure the 114-107 victory on April 20, 2022, adding 12 points, five assists and a steal.

Luka Dončić coming off of a pick-and-roll is the last thing you want to see when playing the Dallas Mavericks. In a play typically saved for All-Star weekend, Dončić freezes the defense with a behind-the-back combo straight into a cross-court pass, finding Kristaps Porzingis for a crucial three-pointer on the left wing. Dončić led the way with 26 points, 14 assists and seven rebounds during the Mavericks’ 116-106 triumph over the Houston Rockets on October 26, 2021.

Full strength or not, few players can change the climate of a game or series the way Philadelphia 76ers big Joel Embiid can. After missing the first two games against the Miami Heat with an orbital fracture, Embiid returned, masked, and on a mission in Game 3. Operating out of the triple threat position, the 76ers star uses a pump fake and a tight dribble, finding space to drain a difficult and-one jumper to ignite the home crowd. This bucket proved to be one of the clinchers, giving Philadelphia a double-digit lead late in the fourth, on the way to a convincing 99-79 win on May 6, 2022. Embiid’s presence cut the series lead to 2-1, with 18 points, 11 rebounds and one block.

Ja Morant has a different relationship with gravity than the rest of us. The ultra springy Memphis Grizzlies guard chases down Denver Nuggets wing Will Barton in transition then bats his layup attempt off the backboard on April 19, 2021.

Kawhi Leonard’s return to the lineup following a two-week absence was just what the doctor ordered for the LA Clippers. After tying the tight battle at 117 on the prior play, the two-time champion and Finals MVP stuck a dagger in the Charlotte Hornets on his squad’s next possession. Leonard grabs an inbound pass on the wing before taking one dribble and draining a step-back jumper over the outstretched fingertips of Jalen McDaniels. The always-clutch five-time All-Star tallied 16 points, six rebounds and two assists in the Clippers’ 119-117 win on December 5, 2022.

MarJon Beauchamp earns his welcome to the league moment against the Houston Rockets, bringing the ball up the court, driving into the lane and converting a left-handed layup. The Milwaukee Bucks rookie guard and 24th overall pick of the 2022 NBA Draft needed just two minutes of game time to record his first points and walked away with a 125-105 Bucks victory on October 22, 2022.

Fourteen seasons into his career, Los Angeles Lakers star guard Russell Westbrook still has generational athleticism. He puts it into focus on an in-and-out crossover, weaving in between two San Antonio Spursdefenders en route to a difficult jam at the rim. Westbrook produced a statline of 33 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists and three steals helping the Lakers seal the win in a 125-121 thriller on October 26, 2021.
