Few players across the NBA have been able to elevate their level of play from the regular season to the playoffs quite as effectively as Utah Jazz guard Donovan Mitchell. Exemplifying such, the three-time All-Star takes a high screen, quickly crosses over to split the hedging defense, then catches a body with an explosive one-handed jam in traffic. Mitchell did what he does, pouring in 32 points and six assists in Game 3 of the First Round against the Dallas Mavericks on April 21, 2022.

OG Anunoby has steadily improved over the course of each of his five years in the league and we saw that come to life in the Toronto Raptors’ First Round series with the Philadelphia 76ers. Up 12 points late in Game 5 with momentum on his side, Anunoby sets up for the dagger, rejecting a ball screen before taking off down the right side and dropping the sledgehammer on the way to a 103-88 victory. Anunoby was versatile in the series and the win, with 16 points, five rebounds and four assists on April 25, 2022.

Rookies aren’t expected to make a big impact in the playoffs but it’s clear Jose Alvarado had other plans. Using his viral sneak-steal, the undersized menace preys on one of the NBA’s greatest floor generals with an incredible defensive play, leading to an easy score the other way. The play helped halt any comeback attempt from the Phoenix Suns, as the Pelicans marched to a 118-103 win to even the First Round series up at 2-2. Alvarado chipped in five points, two rebounds and a pair of key fourth-quarter swipes on April 24, 2022.

Before Game 1 of his series against the Memphis Grizzlies, Anthony Edwards took to social media to deliver a simple message: when the lights come on, he shows up. Edwards took to defending that message right away in the postseason, using a series of between-the-leg dribbles to catch a defender off guard, before finishing the possession with a smooth stepback. This play helped Minnesota open a five-point lead to start the fourth, on the way to a 130-117 road upset. Edwards excelled in his first postseason test with 36 points, six assists, four triples, and two blocks on April 16, 2022.

Whether he’s scoring points in bunches or using his gravity to set up an open teammate, Denver Nuggets big Nikola Jokić has the code to crack any defense. With the Nuggets needing one more bucket to seal the game and extend their season, the reigning MVP rolls after a screen, receives a pass and goes straight into a Eurostep before delivering an on-the-money dime to a wide-open Will Barton in the corner. Jokić put on a show for the Denver crowd with 37 points, eight rebounds, six assists and three triples in a 126-121 win over the Golden State Warriors in Game 4 of the First Round on April 24, 2022.

It takes more than a hostile environment and a top-tier defense to keep Brooklyn Nets guard Kyrie Irving from churning out highlight after highlight. In a display of his advanced court vision, Irving splits the defense, drawing in four defenders, then takes to the air before delivering an on-target no-look bounce pass to the deep corner to set up an open Patty Mills three-pointer. Irving was brilliant in Game 1 against his former Boston Celtics squad, stacking 39 points, five rebounds, six assists, four steals with six threes in an April 17, 2022 playoff nail-biter.

No matter the age, situation, or defensive coverage, Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James makes the game of basketball look effortless. James showcases his world-class athleticism by sneaking backdoor on a cut, turning teammate Malik Monk’s lob into a reverse alley-oop slam to send the crowd into a frenzy. James racked up a 30-point, 12-rebound, five-assist performance on January 19, 2022.

Scottie Barnes is a problem. The Toronto Raptors rookie flashes his do-it-all talent in this possession, taking his defender off the dribble, getting to his spot inside the paint and floating a lefty finish that finds the bottom of the net. Barnes finished with 12 points and nine boards in his NBA debut in the October 20, 2021 contest.

The pressure of your first NBA bucket can be immense — especially when you’re the first overall pick. Detroit Pistons 2021 draftee Cade Cunningham catches a pass at the arc and immediately blows by his defender and through the lane to lay one in with his left. Detroit walked away with the win in the rookie’s NBA debut on October 30, 2021.

In one of the first Moments to be selected by the community in Top Shot history, Evan Mobley shows off his multi-dimensional skill set, which has Cavs fans rightfully excited for the future. The 7-footer has a knack for finishing uncanny plays - Mobley makes a strong gather off a Darius Garland dish and hangs through contact to finish his first career and-one.

There are three-point shooters who change games, and three-point shooters who change the game. Steph Curry is definitively the latter. In a home opener to kick off another potential MVP season, the Golden State Warriors guard pushes the ball up the court and heaves it to a teammate in the corner. Curry then chases his own pass and calls for the ball back to sink a high-flying, catch-and-shoot triple. The seven-time All-Star hit his first 10 field goals of the night on October 21, 2021, while pouring in 25 of his 45 points in the first quarter alone.

There’s a bright future for rookies with elite creativity on the court. In his NBA debut with the Houston Rockets, first-year guard Jalen Green sprints to catch a pass near the perimeter and continues toward the hoop as several defenders mark him. Meeting Minnesota Timberwolves star center Karl-Anthony Towns at the rim, Green goes up and under in midair for an acrobatic reverse layup - the first bucket of his career - on October 20, 2021.

Fueled by competitiveness and his basketball IQ, there are no matchups too big for Golden State Warriors defensive powerhouse Draymond Green. Holding a 116-111 lead in the fourth quarter of Game 3 of the First Round, everyone in the arena knew where the Denver Nuggets would go with the ball next. Outsized by a skilled and strong Nikola Jokić, Green stands his ground before perfectly timing a reach to come up with a game-sealing steal to push his team to a 118-113 win and a 3-0 series lead. The six-time All-Defensive teamer was everywhere on April 21, 2022 with six points, five rebounds, 10 assists and two steals.

Just weeks into his NBA career, Josh Giddey has NBA fans and superstars alike buzzing about his movement of the ball. In his first regular season game with the Oklahoma City Thunder, the rook demonstrates masterful handles, simultaneously losing his defender and drawing two more before floating the rock to a teammate for a layup. In addition to his smooth maneuvers on the court, Giddey locked in 10 rebounds in his debut on October 20, 2021.

Making an impact on a playoff-hopeful squad is no easy feat for a rookie — just don’t tell that to Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga. In his NBA debut, the 7th overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, catches a behind-the-back bounce pass from teammate Juan Toscano-Anderson and steps back behind the arc to launch a confident three for his first-career bucket. Kuminga walked away with a Warriors win and the game ball on October 30, 2021.

There’s nothing quite like that first-ever bucket in the NBA. For Los Angeles Lakers guard Austin Reaves, that moment required a little creativity. Here, against the Phoenix Suns, Reaves punishes an overaggressive closeout before snaking his way into the middle of the lane for a high-arcing leaner over the outstretched arms of a defender. Reaves was efficient, scoring eight points in just 12 minutes in his debut game on October 22, 2021.

Though only a rookie, Moses Moody is fearless in his attack. Despite a hard close out by All-Star Anthony Davis, Moody turned the tables with a strong baseline drive en route to a layup for his first NBA points.

Franz Wagner can throw it down, as proven early and often in his young career. The Orlando Magic rookie catches a pass outside the arc and battles his way to the cup for a thunderous one-handed slam. Wagner went for 12 points in his NBA debut on October 20, 2021.

Give and you shall receive, or such was the case for Gary Payton II, who happened to be in position for the biggest shot of his professional career in the fourth quarter of Game 5 of the First Round. Following a series of extra passes, Payton finds himself open with the ball, then stabilizes for a three-pointer that extends the Golden State Warriors’ lead to five, effectively sealing the series over the Denver Nuggets. Payton was dependable and excellent, with 15 points on six-of-eight shooting and three triples in a 102-98 victory on April 27, 2022.

After staking his claim as the NBA’s best late-game scorer in the regular season, it was only right that Chicago Bulls star guard DeMar DeRozan have that opportunity in the postseason. Up three with 30 seconds to go in Game 2 of the First Round, the five-time All-Star called his own number, attacking the rim with aggression on the way to a cold-blooded game-clincher over and around the Milwaukee Bucks defense. DeRozan was spectacular, tallying 41 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two blocks in the 114-110 victory to even the series at one game apiece on April 20, 2022.

Leave a rookie wide open in the paint and that decision just might blow up in your face. Houston Rockets first-year big man Alperen Şengün follows a teammate’s high-flying three attempt and, unguarded, levitates to emphatically jam it home as it bounces off the rim. Şengün grabbed six boards to go along with 11 points in his NBA debut on October 20, 2021.

In one of the first Moments to be selected by the community in Top Shot history, Jalen Suggs shows that he knows how to create a clean look for himself. The former high school quarterback turned top-5 NBA draft pick wards off Dejounte Murray with a devastating behind-the-back dribble and pulls-up into a silky smooth trey.

He may be the Defensive Player of the Year but Boston Celtics guard Marcus Smart is more than willing to step up on offensive end when his number’s called. With his team in dire need of a final bucket to bury the Brooklyn Nets in Game 2 of the First Round of the 2022 NBA Playoffs, Smart utilizes a quick first step to creep into the lane, setting himself up for a tough left-handed floater over the outstretched arms of three defenders. After the bucket, the two-way veteran couldn’t help but gaze at his hand in awe, and teammate Jaylen Brown joined the party. Smart hit the biggest shot of the night and helped secure the 114-107 victory on April 20, 2022, adding 12 points, five assists and a steal.

Luka Dončić coming off of a pick-and-roll is the last thing you want to see when playing the Dallas Mavericks. In a play typically saved for All-Star weekend, Dončić freezes the defense with a behind-the-back combo straight into a cross-court pass, finding Kristaps Porzingis for a crucial three-pointer on the left wing. Dončić led the way with 26 points, 14 assists and seven rebounds during the Mavericks’ 116-106 triumph over the Houston Rockets on October 26, 2021.

Can't stop him, can only hope to contain him! Minnesota has all hands on deck trying to deter reigning NBA Finals MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo, who instead takes only a few motions to gather, hang & hammer home his own miss.

The ability to make tough shots cannot be taught. Denver Nuggets rookie Bones Hyland shows no fear in going 1-on-1 with his defender and puts on a series of moves, hesitations and fakes. Despite stout defense, Hyland still converts a leaning, one-handed fadeaway going left. That’s tough. The bucket counted for two of Hyland’s seven points off the bench in his NBA debut on October 25, 2021.

With elite bucket-getting abilities, Brooklyn Nets guard Cam Thomas has proven he’s no average rookie. With the fate of his team in his hands, Thomas attacks a hard closeout before calmly draining a game-winning, one-legged leaner to defeat the San Antonio Spurs. Thomas chipped in 11 points and six rebounds in the 121-119 overtime win on January 9, 2022.

Unlimited range in today’s NBA is a beautiful thing. New Orleans Pelicans rookie Trey Murphy III shows off his marksmanship with no hesitation as he drains a long three. Murphy converted on two triples in his NBA debut on October 20, 2021.

To stand any chance against a generational offensive talent like Kevin Durant, a defender must be able to effectively mix fearlessness with quick decision making, and Boston Celtics forward Grant Williams proved up to the challenge in the First Round of the 2022 NBA Playoffs. Defending one-on-one at the elbow, Williams anticipates the shot attempt and swats the ball away, then runs the floor with determination before being rewarded with a pass and two points on the other end. The third-year man stepped up all series long, including seven points and this key block in a 115-114 victory over the Brooklyn Nets in Game 1 of the First Round on April 17, 2022.

When Minnesota Timberwolves big Karl-Anthony Towns is aggressive and in attack mode, every position from 1-through-5 is in danger. With his team holding a one-point advantage in the third, and in need of a big run to steal Game 1, Towns works a quick pick-and-roll, getting a smaller Memphis Grizzlies defender on him before spinning his way to the rim to drop a one-handed hammer in traffic. Towns opened the series with punctuation, dropping in 29 points, 13 rebounds and three assists in the 130-117 win on April 16, 2022.

On the floor alongside a former league MVP, an MVP candidate, and multiple All-Stars, it was sophomore guard Tyrese Maxey who threw the first haymaker of the First-Round matchup between the Philadelphia 76ers and Toronto Raptors. Striving to hold off another one of the Raptors’ comeback efforts, Maxey excites the crowd once more, this time punishing a hard closeout with a lightning-quick drive on the way to a difficult hanging and-one bucket. Maxey became the youngest 76ers player with a 30-point postseason game (he scored 38), helping draw first blood with a 131-111 triumph in Game 1 on April 16, 2022.

Welcome to the (Jordan) Poole party. Better known for his ability to get buckets from the perimeter, this time Poole sees a hole in the defense and takes it strong to the hoop, finishing at the rim with a tough up-and-under, off-hand layup.

Very few players strike fear in the opponent’s heart with the game on the line quite like Trae Young. In the midst of a grueling series and less than 10 seconds remaining in the game, the All-Star point guard finds himself with the ball in his hands as he so often does. Looking for a hole in the Miami Heat defense, Young takes what the defense gives him, driving the lane around a physical P.J. Tucker, before steadying himself for a game-winning patented floater. True to his Ice Trae nickname, Young saved his best for last with 10 of his 24 points in the fourth quarter, along with eight assists and four rebounds in a 111-110 Game 3 victory in the First Round of the 2022 NBA Playoffs on April 22, 2022.

Sometimes in the NBA, it’s about staying ready for when your name is ultimately called. With minimal playing time in the first four games of the Miami Heat’s First Round matchup with the Atlanta Hawks in the 2022 NBA Playoffs, two-time All-Star Victor Oladipo was asked to slide into the starting lineup for an injured Jimmy Butler in Game 5, and he delivered. Catching the defense flat-footed, Oladipo turns on the jets, using a downhill drive and a rhythmic spin move to get into the paint before finishing with a smooth, acrobatic finger roll in traffic. The explosive combo-guard led his team in scoring, dropping 23 points to go along with three steals, on the way to grittily closing out the series on April 26, 2022 with a 97-94 victory.

Each postseason, there comes a young player or two that thrives on the big stage for the first time, solidifying themselves a star in the process. This year, New Orleans Pelicans forward Brandon Ingram proved to be one of those players. In an effort to even the First Round series with the No. 1-seeded Phoenix Suns at 2-2, Ingram rose up literally and figuratively, calling on his own number after a failed post-entry pass attempt, spinning to the middle of the lane before taking flight with an electric one-handed contact slam to wow the crowd. Ingram finished with a 30-point, four-rebound, five-assist masterpiece in 118-103 win over the Phoenix Suns on April 24, 2022.

In his regular season debut with the Memphis Grizzlies, Ziaire Williams is unguarded at the perimeter and makes the Cleveland Cavaliers defense pay by catching an outlet pass, squaring up and draining a three for the first bucket of his NBA career on October 20, 2021.

When you’re attacking the rim against the three-time Defensive Player of the Year, you’d better come with both a plan and aggressive intent. With a head of steam and no defender in his airspace, Dallas Mavericks guard Spencer Dinwiddie shows how it’s done, taking off to flush home a powerful hammer to extend the lead to 15. Dinwiddie, one of the league’s best pickups at the trade deadline, poured in 20 points, five rebounds, six assists and three steals in the 126-118 victory over the Utah Jazz in Game 3 of the First Round on April 21, 2022 to take a 2-1 series advantage.

Trailer, trailer, trailer. With the defense on its heels, San Antonio Spurs rookie Joshua Primo provides an outlet for his teammate and readies himself for a three-point shot. Like clockwork, Primo collects the pass, steps into his shot, then releases over the defense for his first points in his NBA debut on October 20, 2021.

Homegrown buckets hit different. In his NBA regular season debut, Chicago Bulls rookie guard Ayo Dosunmu goes on a tear for not one but two transition layups. The Chicago native and University of Illinois star wasted no time making an impact on October 20, 2021.

When you’re playing an NBA game in front of your hometown, you’d better be ready to put on a show. Jose Alvarado proves up to the challenge, putting the New York Knicks’ defense through a game of hide-and-seek. He uses a sharp behind-the-back before weaving through traffic and finishing with a fancy around-the-rim finish. Alvarado made good on his homecoming with an efficient 13-point, four-assist, four-steal performance in a 102-91 win for the New Orleans Pelicans on January 20, 2022.

When Miami Heat sharpshooter Duncan Robinson finds his rhythm, there are few sights scarier for a defense. Racing up from the baseline to the wing for a dribble-handoff, Robinson displays his dead-eye accuracy by effortlessly draining a triple while being fouled by an overly aggressive Atlanta Hawks defender. The third-year forward had a performance to remember in a 115-91 victory in Game 1 of the First Round of the 2022 NBA Playoffs on April 17, 2022, canning 27 points on eight-of-nine shooting from deep in just 22 minutes of play.

Klay Thompson may be one of the most feared shooters in NBA history, but he’s got other facets to his game he can contribute with as well. He showcases one here, leaking out on a fastbreak and facing a drive before dropping off a behind-the-back dish to a teammate for a score. Thompson played an all-around offensive game with 15 points, six assists and three triples in a 130-92 win over the Dallas Mavericks on January 25, 2022.

In win-or-go-home situations with their season on the line, it’s the best players who find a way to tap into a new level. On the brink of elimination, Toronto Raptors forward Pascal Siakam proved prepared for the pressure, drawing a favorable switch on a pick-and-roll before muscling his way into the paint for a tough finger roll in traffic. This was a part of Siakam’s explosive second quarter, in which he scored 15 of his 34 points, giving Toronto a lead they would never again surrender on the way to cutting it to a 110-102 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers in Game 4 of the First Round. Siakam also added in eight rebounds, five assists and two blocks in an all-around performance on April 23, 2022.

Forget everything you know about conventional basketball when Nikola Jokić hits the floor. The mesmerizing Denver Nuggets center defies positional norms yet again on January 7, 2022, seamlessly carrying the rock the length of the floor against the Sacramento Kings, then hitting JaMychal Green in stride with a casual no-look, one-handed entry feed. Jokić finished with 33 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists in the win. 

Pressure defense doesn't faze Jayson Tatum. The Boston Celtics star puts on a dribbling clinic in a series of maneuvers before losing his defender with a quick spin move and explosive finish at the hoop. Ball on a string. Tatum finished with 20 points in the November 1, 2021 contest against the Chicago Bulls.

Some rookies are just fearless from the jump. In his first regular season game with the Indiana Pacers, Chris Duarte attempts to lose his defender with a sidestep and a pump fake. With his man still on him and seconds left on the clock, Duarte pulls up for a jumper and beats the buzzer to nail a three, capping off an 11 point quarter. He shined in his debut with 27 points and five rebounds on October 20, 2021.

Year after year, the Utah Jazz’s championship aspirations hinge largely on the production of their talented All-Star pair. Desperately hoping to avoid a 3-1 series deficit, it was only fitting that their pick-and-roll connection helped punctuate an exhilarating, come-from-behind 100-99 win over the Dallas Mavericks in Game 4 of the First Round. With just 15 seconds remaining and the Jazz down one, All-Star Frenchman Rudy Gobert uses a slip on a pick-and-roll to make himself available for what ultimately became the game-winning alley-oop. Gobert had a monster double-double with 17 points and 15 rebounds, helping even the series to a 2-2 deadlock on April 23, 2022.

On a team full of tough shot makers, it always helps to have an ambitious rebounder chasing the rock off the glass. For the Memphis Grizzlies, Brandon Clarke has proven to be that guy. With Memphis trailing 106-104 with one minute to go, and in danger of falling into a 3-2 series hole, Clarke sets himself up for the game’s biggest rebound, tipping the ball out for a teammate to drain an ice-cold bucket. Hustle plays proved crucial in helping Memphis erase a 13-point fourth quarter deficit, and Clarke had them in abundance with 21 points and 15 rebounds on April 26, 2022.

With their star player out for the first three games of the series, the Dallas Mavericks instilled a next-man-up mentality against the Utah Jazz. Time and time again, fifth-year forward Maxi Kleber was up for the challenge. Up 99-98 with three minutes remaining and anxiously pushing to avoid dropping two straight at home, Kleber steadies himself along the right baseline, taking advantage of a well-timed drive-and-kick before draining a crowd-igniting three-pointer, one of his eight on the night. When the NBA’s two highest-scoring teams meet for a playoff duel, everyone’s going to get their chance to shine. For Tyus Jones, that moment came with a chance to close the series for good. Proving ready in the final minute of a one-point game, Jones pops far along the top of the key, providing himself enough space to take a teammate’s pass and raise up for a series-clinching bucket in Game 6. That helped cap a 40-22 fourth-quarter run, guiding a come-from-behind 114-106 win on April 29, 2022, in which Jones contributed 10 points and four assists.

A finalist for the NBA’s Defensive Player of the Year award, Phoenix Suns guard Mikal Bridges is capable of making life difficult for any perimeter player across the NBA landscape. Rotating over to contest a shot attempt from a New Orleans Pelicans guard, Bridges uses his 7-foot-1 wingspan to swat a layup attempt, and then again seconds later on a putback try. Taking on a little extra offensive responsibility with teammate Devin Booker out with an injury, Bridges had a night to remember in Game 5 of the First Round dropping a playoff career-high 31 points on just 17 shots, five rebounds, four blocks and four triples in the 112-97 win on April 26, 2022.

In the First Round of the 2022 NBA Playoffs, Brooklyn Nets utility man Bruce Brown was a superstar in his role. In the middle of an excellent performance on the road in a hostile environment, Milwaukee Bucks guard Grayson Allen shows his ability to punish the Chicago Bulls defense, taking advantage of an overzealous defender on the way to the rim for a smooth finger-roll finish, plus the foul. Sharing the floor with multiple All-Stars and MVP candidates, it was Allen who led the game in scoring with 22 points, six rebounds and five triples, guiding a demonstrative 111-81 win in Game 3 of the First Round on April 22, 2022 to push the Bucks to a 2-1 series edge.

The bucket kickstarted a 23-12 run that helped the Sixers claw back into the game, anchoring a thrilling 104-101 overtime win in Game 3 of their First Round series with the Toronto Raptors. Bane rips through his defender on the perimeter and reverses back with a spin dribble into a driving slam with one hand. De’Andre Hunter may be early into his NBA career but even with the bight lights of the postseason, the Atlanta Hawks forward was anything but overwhelmed. With his team attempting to stage a season-saving comeback against the stout Miami Heat, Hunter took to the challenge, faking a dribble-handoff before quickly turning the corner and rising up for an emphatic jam. Although the Hawks fell short in the series, the third-year wing was fantastic throughout, leading his team in scoring at 21.2 points per game, including a career-high 35 points in Game 5 of the First Round of the 2022 NBA Playoffs on April 26, 2022.

Williams III tallied a double-double of 12 points & 16 rebounds (to go along with 3 blocks) in Boston's 140-129 double overtime shootout in Charlotte on October 25, 2021.

See an open lane and take it. With defensive attention zeroed in on Golden State Warriors teammate Steph Curry, versatile big man Draymond Green finds a clear path to the cup. It doesn’t take more than a split second for Green to decide what he wants to do: one hard dribble, two big steps and one monster hammer up and over the defense. Green registered a well-rounded line of eight points, eight boards and five dimes in the November 5, 2021 win over the visiting New Orleans Pelicans.

Even if you throw a couple of defenders at Boston Celtics All-Star Jayson Tatum, he’s still likely to drop a bucket on you. Tatum is met by multiple players beyond the three-point line, splits the screen with a left-handed dribble, gets in the lane and goes up for a powerful, two-handed slam. Tatum had one of the most complete outings of his career against the Washington Wizards on January 23, 2022, dropping a season-high 51 points along with 10 rebounds and seven assists. 

If there's a lane to the basket, DeMar DeRozan is going to find it. The Chicago Bulls swingman puts his slashing ability on display in the waning seconds of a quarter against the Los Angeles Lakers, first blowing past his man out at the perimeter, picking up steam on his way through the paint, then finishing around the outstretched arms of a help-side defender. DeRozan put up 38 points in the road victory on November 15, 2021.

Hustle your way back to break up a transition play and, more often than not, great things will happen. Showing off his relentless motor, Boston Celtics forward Grant Williams speeds back on defense, pins a Denver Nuggets shot against the glass and saves an easy score. Williams chipped in eight points, two triples and a pair of blocks, his hustle plays proving critical in a 108-102 win on February 11, 2022.

Tyler Herro does not shy away from the big Moments. The Miami Heat guard has zero hestiation in getting to his spot, taking his defender off the dribble, then hitting him with a stepback triple. Nothing but bottom. Herro chipped in with a team-high 30 points off the bench.
