After nine seasons as a member of the Utah Jazz, Rudy Gobert kicked off his Twin Cities debut in style. First showing off the defensive chops that made him NBA Defensive Player of the Year three times, Gobert picks off an errant Oklahoma City Thunder pass and races the other way. Not exactly known for his outside shooting touch but short on time with the third quarter clock draining fast, Gobert beats the buzzer with a one-handed floater from just inside the three-point arc. The three-time All-Star put together a masterful first impression, with 23 points, 16 rebounds and two assists in the 115-108 win on October 19, 2022.

Spending the preceding two seasons with the Detroit Pistons elevated Jerami Grant from solid role player to potent NBA scorer. Now the Portland Trail Blazers are elated that he’s on their side. As he enters his ninth season in the league, Grant continues to raise his game, an evolution on full display as he converts a Damian Lillard misfire into a ferocious putback slam against the Sacramento Kings. That level of hustle is already earning Grant scores of new fans in Portland after his team-high 23 points on October 19, 2022 — along with eight rebounds and two steals — in the Trail Blazers’ 115-108 win to open the 2022-23 season.

Malcolm Brogdon has long had the reputation of a basketball chameleon, the kind of player who can adapt his game to fit any system. After a three-year run with the Indiana Pacers, Brogdon now finds himself a member of the reigning Eastern Conference champion Boston Celtics, getting off to a great start right out of the gate. Coming off the bench for his new team on opening night of the 2022-23 season, Brogdon fits right in as expected, using an array of dribbling and post-up moves to position himself closer to the basket. The seventh-year pro then flicks a one-handed floater over Joel Embiid for two of his 16 points — along with two rebounds, four assists and two steals — in Boston’s 126-117 win on October 18, 2022.

The state of Texas continues to look great on Christian Wood. Swapping his former Houston Rockets threads — where he spent the previous two seasons — for his new Dallas Mavericks jersey, Wood got right down to business on opening night of the 2022-23 season. Coming off the bench with a starter’s energy, Wood scores from inside and out while bringing his energetic brand of basketball to Dallas. Between the third and fourth quarters, Wood scored 16 straight points for his new squad – including an 11-0 personal run. Wood’s new squad came up short against the Phoenix Suns but his impact was felt in the form of 25 points, eight rebounds, two assists and four three-pointers in the October 19, 2022 showdown.

What rust? It had been 545 days since we last saw John Wall on a basketball court, and yet it looks like he never left. In his much-anticipated LA Clippers debut, Wall played with the energy of a rookie with the same talent that made him an All-Star for five consecutive seasons. Suiting up against the Los Angeles Lakers, it doesn’t take Wall long to make an impact, beating his defender with a hesitation stutter step before pulling up and sinking a foul line jumper. In a 25-minute run off the bench, Wall contributed 15 points, four rebounds, three assists and a steal in his new squad’s 103-97 victory on October 20, 2022.

Donovan Mitchell already looks right at home with the Cleveland Cavaliers. After five offensively-explosive seasons with the Utah Jazz — the last three of those warranting All-Star selections — Mitchell has taken his talent eastward, and early returns are extremely promising. Mitchell nonchalantly wills his way past the entire Toronto Raptors defense into the lane before firing a last-second pass into the corner for an awaiting Dean Wade, who buries the open triple. Despite falling in a close game, Mitchell aced his first Cleveland test with 31 points, two rebounds, nine assists and two steals on October 19, 2022.

Although there are plenty of new faces on the Utah Jazz, Lauri Markkanen and his teammates look like they have been playing together for years. Markkanen makes an impact right away with his new squad following a season with the Cleveland Cavaliers, taking a pass in the corner, where he’s immediately confronted by two-time reigning MVP Nikola Jokić. Thinking quickly on his feet, Markkanen fires a one-handed missile into the other corner, where fellow new arrival Collin Sexton is waiting to drain the triple. The Finnish big man contributed 17 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals, kicking off a new era of Jazz basketball with a 123-102 rout of the Denver Nuggets on October 19, 2022.

It took all of one game in the NBA for Bennedict Mathurin to announce his presence. The offensively-gifted Indiana Pacers rookie instantly rewards the team’s faith in him, corralling an inbound pass underneath the basket and leaving his defender scratching his head with a ridiculously difficult reverse layup and foul. Mathurin, the sixth overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, came off the bench to score 19 points on 7-for-15 shooting in his debut while adding seven rebounds, two assists and two steals against the Washington Wizards on October 19, 2022.

In the early stages of the 2022-23 season, Devin Vassell is making a case to be one of the league’s breakout players. Beginning his third season with the San Antonio Spurs, the 2020 lottery pick has improved in every facet of his game. Playing on the road against the star-powered Philadelphia 76ers, Vassell shows the opposition that he’s pretty good too, pushing the tempo in transition and somehow finding a way to convert an acrobatic running layup despite being surrounded by three Philly defenders. Vassell was firing on all cylinders all game, connecting on 9 of his 14 shots for 22 points, four rebounds, three assists and four triples in his squad’s 114-105 upset road win on October 22, 2022.

The same relentless motor and mystifying athleticism that make Memphis Grizzlies guard Ja Morant a terror on offense, make him an equally explosive defender, just ask the Houston Rockets. After a jump ball ends up in Jalen Green’s hands, the young Houston guard motors with a head of steam the other way in search of an easy bucket. Morant had other ideas, trailing the streaking Green up the floor and timing his jump flawlessly to earn a highlight-reel rejection off the backboard. Morant was exceptional in the contest, torching the Rockets for 49 points on 17-for-26 shooting while adding four rebounds, eight assists and two blocks in a 129-122 Memphis win on October 21, 2022.

Bruising big men who can knock it down from deep are hard to predict and even more difficult to defend. Hosting the Orlando Magic in their first game of the 2022-23 season, Isaiah Stewart showcases an improved confidence in his range. Up by a point in the waning seconds of the contest, Detroit Pistons star Cade Cunningham finds Stewart in the corner, who smoothly sinks the critical long-range bucket. The third-year pro produced 14 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals in a 113-109 Detroit win on October 19, 2022.

Now that’s how you announce your presence to the rest of the league. A year after averaging just three points per game in less than eight minutes a night, Nick Richards has burst on to the scene for the Charlotte Hornets in the early stages of the 2022-23 season. After erupting for 19 points and 10 rebounds in the season opener, the reserve center one-ups himself against the Atlanta Hawks. Executing a flawless pick-and-roll with fellow reserve James Bouknight, Richards takes a bounce pass from his teammate and rises up for an emphatic one-handed slam. It was a perfect game for Richards, who made all nine of his field goal attempts in a 20-point, 11-rebound, two-block effort in 20 efficient minutes in Charlotte’s 126-109 win on October 23, 2022.

After arriving via trade in Jan. 2022, a shoulder injury cut Cam Reddish’s run with the New York Knicks short after just 15 games. Now that he’s healthy again, the rest of the league better watch out. Against the Memphis Grizzlies in New York’s first game of the 2022-23 season, Reddish wastes little time reintroducing himself to the basketball world, drifting into the corner to catch a pass from Jalen Brunson and sinking a contested three-pointer with three seconds left in regulation to force overtime. Although the Knicks lost the game, the Big Apple was surely buzzing after Reddish put up 22 points, five rebounds, three steals and a block on 9-of-15 shooting off the bench in the October 19, 2022 battle.

Acquiring Kelly Olynyk right before the 2022-23 season began is already paying major dividends for the Utah Jazz. Trailing by one late in overtime in the team’s third game of the new campaign, Olynyk grabs the inbound pass and makes his move, dribbling with determination into the lane before unfurling a game-winning driving scoop shot with three seconds remaining to sink the New Orleans Pelicans. Olynyk’s 20-point, three-rebound, five-assist effort was instrumental in the thrilling 122-121 win on October 23, 2022, not to mention keeping the Jazz a perfect 3-0 to start the season.

New season, same results for Andrew Wiggins and the Golden State Warriors. Fresh off a transformative title run a season ago, Wiggins and company are back to defend the crown. Against an overmatched Sacramento Kings squad, the 2022 All-Star shows last year’s postseason run was no fluke, stepping into a passing lane and picking off a lazy pass. Wiggins is off to the races from there, finishing the fast break with a slam en route 24 points, five rebounds, three steals and two blocks in Golden State’s 130-125 victory on October 23, 2022.

It appears that Damion Lee brought his clutch championship form with him to the desert. In his first game with the Phoenix Suns after a four-year run with the Golden State Warriors, Lee makes Suns fans elated that he’s on their side. Tied in the final seconds of a fourth-quarter battle, Lee takes a pass from three-time All-Star Devin Booker and makes his move, driving with determination toward the basket and draining a difficult game-winning fall-away jumper with 9.7 seconds left. Lee scored 11 points off the bench — all in the fourth quarter — to go with two rebounds and two assists in helping the Suns erase a 22-point third-quarter deficit to stun the Dallas Mavericks 107-105 on October 19, 2022.

It’s no secret that the Brooklyn Nets have plenty of star power but the true strength of any team with lofty expectations comes from its depth. Enter Royce O’Neale, who joined the Nets after spending his first five seasons as a role player with the Utah Jazz. Clinging to a one-point lead in the waning seconds of the fourth quarter, O’Neale takes a pass from Kyrie Irving on the wing and calmly buries a 25-foot dagger to sink the Toronto Raptors and deliver Brooklyn its first victory of the 2022-23 season. O’Neale scattered seven points, four rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks in the 109-105 triumph on October 21, 2022.

Even in Year 14, Wesley Matthews hasn’t lost his magic touch. The Milwaukee Bucks guard has always been a marksman from deep and has settled in as a dependable role player for a team with championship aspirations. Trailing by two with less than a minute remaining against the Philadelphia 76ers in Milwaukee’s 2022-23 opener, Matthews puts his clutch gene on display, burying a go-ahead triple with under 25 seconds remaining to silence the hostile Philly crowd. Matthews had eight points, five rebounds, two assists and a block in 20 minutes off the bench in the 90-88 win on October 20, 2022.

Primarily a starter his final three seasons with the Denver Nuggets, Will Barton was a revelation off the bench in his first game with his new squad. Now a member of the Washington Wizards, the 11-year veteran wastes little time making a positive impression on his teammates. Following a steal on the defensive end, Barton leads the counterattack while surveying his options. Spotting Daniel Gafford sneaking into the paint, Barton threads the needle with an unselfish no-look dish and Gafford does the rest, putting a Pacers defender on a poster with an impressive one-handed slam. Barton debuted with 14 points, two rebounds and three assists in helping his team prevail 114-107 on October 19, 2022.

A 7-foot-3 basketball unicorn with slick handles and long-range touch? Welcome to the 2022-23 season. After arriving in a trade the previous season, Kristaps Porziņģis played just 17 games with the Washington Wizards, showing that unique blend of talent that made him the fourth pick of the 2015 draft. Porziņģis is clearly having fun in his first full season in D.C., taking a pass well behind the three-point arc preparing to unleash his magic. The big man makes a Chicago Bulls defender look absolutely foolish, first with a pump fake, then with an ankle-breaking crossover and long-range triple. Porziņģis tallied 14 points, three rebounds, two assists, two blocks and a steal in Washington’s 102-100 triumph on October 21, 2022.

Talk about making a first impression. In the first start of his NBA career, Santi Aldama instantly rewards the Memphis Grizzlies’ faith in his ability to fill in for the injured Jaren Jackson Jr. After showing isolated flashes as a rookie, the 21-year-old from Spain has clearly elevated his game in Year 2, putting himself in the perfect spot when a triple team envelops teammate Steven Adams. Aldama makes the New York Knicks pay for leaving him open, finishing the play with a one-handed slam, two of his 18 points to go with a career-high 11 rebounds in Memphis’ 115-112 overtime win on October 19, 2022.

Brook Lopez has no time for Houston Rockets guard Jalen Green’s drive to the hoop, literally ripping the ball out of Green’s hands in his attempt to score and needing only one arm to do so. It was a block party for the Milwaukee Bucks’ 15-year veteran, who swatted five shots in the October 22, 2022 contest. The seven-footer did a little bit of everything for the Bucks — in addition to the five blocks, Lopez scored nine points, grabbed five rebounds, dished out two assists, grabbed two steals and sank a trio of three-pointers in Milwaukee’s runaway 125-105 victory.

A new year brings with it fresh opportunities to exorcize old demons. Goga Bitadze and the Indiana Pacers dropped their final 10 games of the preceding season, riding a months-long losing streak that stretched to 12 after falling in their first two games of the 2022-23 campaign. In one play, Bitadze says out with the old, in with the new as he’s set up with a perfect alley-oop from exciting rookie teammate Bennedict Mathurin, taking out his frustrations on the rim with an effortless one-handed slam against the Detroit Pistons. Bitadze had a monster performance with 14 points, 15 rebounds and four assists off the bench, helping Indiana earn that long-awaited 124-115 victory on October 22, 2022.

There’s efficiency… and then there’s Grant Williams. As his Boston Celtics opened the 2022-23 campaign defending their Eastern Conference crown, Williams brought with him some of last season’s magic. Coming off the bench against the rival Philadelphia 76ers, Williams refused to miss, pump faking Shake Milton out of his sneakers while sinking a corner three-pointer. Williams made all five of his field goal attempts — including three triples — along with a rebound and assist in Boston’s 126-117 victory on October 18, 2022.

A healthy Anthony Davis is double trouble for the opposition. Playing in his first game since an injury forced him to shut it down early a season ago, Davis proves just how scary he can be against the defending champion Golden State Warriors. First, the eight-time All-Star deposits a difficult floater off an inbound pass, then uses all of his lengthy 6-foot-10 frame to pick off a lazy Steph Curry pass on the ensuing trip up the floor. Davis then beats everyone in a race to the hoop, dropping in a layup while absorbing contact for an and-one opportunity. The Warriors won the game, but Los Angeles Lakers fans have to be feeling good about Davis’ 27-point, six-rebound, four-steal effort on October 18, 2022.

It’s safe to say that Kentavious Caldwell-Pope is enjoying his new surroundings in the Mile High City. It’s not difficult to understand why, given Caldwell-Pope is now playing with the Denver Nuggets and two-time MVP Nikola Jokić. Against the Oklahoma City Thunder, Jokić is confronted by a double team, forcing the gifted distributor to sling a cross-court bounce pass to Caldwell-Pope in the corner for a triple that would turn into a four-point play. The 10-year veteran was firing on all cylinders, posting 21 points, with six three-pointers, five rebounds and two assists in Denver’s 122-117 win on October 22, 2022.

After a midseason trade brought him from the Phoenix Suns to the Indiana Pacers in Feb. 2022, Jalen Smith’s scoring average more than doubled, jumping from six per game to better than 13 in 22 games. With the 2022-23 season underway, Smith is here to say there’s plenty more where that came from. Detroit Pistons rookie Jaden Ivey receives a rude awakening when he attempts to put Smith on a poster, as the Pacers big man denies Ivey with a ferocious block at the rim. Smith produced a dominant performance — 19 points, 15 rebounds and three blocks to help Indiana win its first game of the season, a 124-115 triumph on October 22, 2022.

In just his second game back from an injury that caused him to miss all but nine games a year ago, Michael Porter Jr. has opened the 2022-23 season looking very much like his old self. Drawing one of the game’s toughest defensive assignments in Steph Curry, Porter Jr. doesn’t flinch, staying in lockstep with the four-time champion and two-time MVP on his path to the basket, swatting Curry’s shot with authority. Porter Jr. brought it on the offensive end too, contributing 17 points and six rebounds in the Denver Nuggets’ 128-123 road win at the defending champion Golden State Warriors on October 21, 2022.

For the 20th time in his decorated career, Paul George did something most NBA players won’t sniff even once — score 40 points in a game. Against the Sacramento Kings, the seven-time All-Star enters total domination mode, taking a pass atop the key before stepping on the accelerator and hitting the defense with an unguardable spin move en route to two of his 40. The LA Clippers needed every one of them to get past the pesky Kings, as George’s 40 points, six rebounds, six assists and two steals were the difference in the 111-109 road win on October 22, 2022. The output made George the 14th active player to score 40 or more in a game at least 20 times.

New season, same old Damian Lillard. The six-time All-Star is already in midseason form in the early stages of his 11th season with the Portland Trail Blazers, breaking the hearts of opposing teams thanks to his impeccably clutch shooting. Against the high-powered Phoenix Suns, Lillard does what he does best, using a dizzying array of dribbles as he hunts for his shot. Multiple defenders give chase to no avail, as Lillard unleashes a 20-footer with a high degree of difficulty that finds its home in the bottom of the net. It was the 41st time in Lillard’s career that he exploded for 40 or more in a game, extinguishing the Suns with 41 points, seven rebounds and three assists in Portland’s 113-111 overtime victory on October 21, 2022.

When you’re on the court with LeBron James as your teammate, it’s only a matter of time before opportunity knocks. Following a thunderous James rejection of Paul George, Austin Reaves scoops up the loose ball and motors the other way in transition before lobbing a flawless alley-oop pass to Lonnie Walker IV, who finishes the slam to get the home crowd on its feet. Reaves had an effective 22-minute run off the bench, posting four points, four rebounds and two assists in the Los Angeles Lakers’ intra-city rivalry game against the LA Clippers on October 20, 2022.

What’s better than a hard-fought overtime win on the road? Doing it against the team that just traded you. After two full seasons with the Minnesota Timberwolves, Jarred Vanderbilt didn’t have to wait long to exact his revenge — now a member of the Utah Jazz, Vanderbilt and his new squad were in Minnesota for the second game of the 2022-23 season. With Mike Conley Jr. pushing the tempo in transition, Vanderbilt bides his time, drifting all alone into the paint in the perfect spot to throw down an open slam off an unselfish dish from his veteran point guard. The final two points of the game were an exclamation point for Vanderbilt, who posted four points, 14 rebounds, four assists and four steals in the thrilling 132-126 win on October 21, 2022.
