Sabrina Ionescu had a game — and second quarter — for the ages against the Atlanta Dream. An All-Star for the first time in 2022 and again in 2023, the fourth-year New York Liberty point guard gets voters’ attention with performances like this one. Unstoppable from beyond the arc, Ionescu drilled a career-best and franchise-record eight 3-pointers on the night - second-most in WNBA history. The 25-year-old scored 20 of her career-high 37 points in the second quarter as her squad raced out to a 22-point halftime lead and didn’t look back in a 106-83 victory on June 9, 2023.

Jewell Loyd activated her magic touch against the Dallas Wings. Now in her ninth season with the Seattle Storm, the five-time All-Star was still operating at the top of her game in the high-scoring thriller as she embraced an isolation matchup with an overmatched defender. Loyd unleashed an elusive crossover dribble to create the necessary space to shake her defensive challenger before confidently stepping into a 3-pointer. Loyd scored 25 of her career-best 39 points in the first half and shot 12 of 22 for the game — 7 of 13 from downtown — to pair with five rebounds and five assists in Seattle’s 109-103 victory on June 17, 2023. 

Jewell Loyd

If the 2020s have become the decade of the triple-double in the WNBA, then nobody stands taller than Alyssa Thomas. There were just 11 recorded in the first 25 years of the league before nine were posted during the 2022 season — four by the four-time Connecticut Sun All-Star, including the first two triple-doubles in WNBA Finals history. Picking up where she left off, Thomas recorded her fourth regular season triple-double of the 2023 against the Chicago Sky, the new high-water mark for a single campaign in league history. She finished at the rim, threaded the needle on highlight-reel passes to set up her teammates and turned rebounds into more assists and points all while leading the Sun to their 12th win in 15 games. Thomas posted 14 points, 11 rebounds and 12 assists in the 96-72 Connecticut victory on June 25, 2023.

Alyssa Thomas

Even when she won the WNBA scoring title in 2020, Arike Ogunbowale did not have a game quite this explosive. The offensively-gifted Dallas Wings guard unleashed a career-best performance against the Seattle Storm as she broke down Jewell Loyd off the dribble, going between the legs multiple times before pulling up for and draining a deep step-back 3-pointer. Ogunbowale — who even bested Loyd’s 39 points — shot 13 of 24 from the field and 7 of 14 from downtown on the way to a career-high 41 points to go with three rebounds, three assists and two steals on June 17, 2023.

How do you stop somebody with eyes in the back of her head? The Indiana Fever are still looking for answers regarding Las Vegas Aces guard Chelsea Gray. Loose in transition, Gray seemed to have her sights set on a well-positioned Kelsey Plum before changing course and firing a no-look, behind-the-back pass to a cutting A’ja Wilson for a wide-open layup. Gray — a five-time All-Star, twice with the Aces —  posted 13 points, three rebounds and a season-high to date 12 assists in the 101-88 victory on June 24, 2023 as Las Vegas won for the 12th time in 13 games this season. 

Chelsea Gray

The WNBA’s Most Improved Player in 2022 is still getting better. Jackie Young made her first All-Star squad after averaging a career-best 15.9 points per game and showed the Los Angeles Sparks she has another level to hit in the second contest of the 2023 campaign. The Las Vegas Aces guard fooled Zia Cooke with a masterful crossover dribble that allowed her to penetrate the lane and finish with a driving underhand layup. Young shot 12 of 18 from the field and 4 of 7 from downtown for a career-best 30 points while mixing in three rebounds, two assists and four steals in her squad’s 94-85 win on May 25, 2023.

Aliyah Boston wasted little time showing why the Indiana Fever made her the No. 1 pick in the 2023 WNBA Draft. In her first professional game, Boston got right to work in the post against Connecticut Sun forward Olivia Nelson-Ododa and finessed her way to a contested layup even as four-time All-Star DeWanna Bonner drifted over as a help defender. Boston shot 6 for 10 from the field for 15 points and added nine rebounds in a strong first effort on May 19, 2023.

Diamond Miller waited her whole life to become a professional basketball player — the wait for her first WNBA bucket was decidedly shorter. The No. 2 pick in the 2023 draft took all of two minutes to register her first career points as Miller pushed the tempo following a Minnesota Lynx steal before swishing a foul line pull-up jumper. Miller tallied nine points, seven rebounds and two assists against the Chicago Sky on May 19, 2023.

Dorka Juhász certainly earned the first block of her WNBA career. The Minnesota Lynx rookie used every bit of her 6-foot-5 frame on the defensive end against the Chicago Sky, working hard on the perimeter as she lunged with full extension to turn aside Dana Evans’ attempt from behind the 3-point line. The second-round pick made the most of her 15 minutes off the bench in her professional debut, posting five points and three rebounds on May 19, 2023.

Jordan Horston more than held her own against the defending champions in her WNBA debut. Facing off against the mighty Las Vegas Aces, the Seattle Storm rookie guard made a strong first impression off the bench. Following teammate Sami Whitcomb’s steal on the defensive end, the ninth overall pick in the 2023 draft was off to the races on the counterattack as she pushed the ball up the floor past multiple Aces defenders before sinking the transition pull-up jumper from just inside the foul line. Horston’s first career basket was part of an impactful debut in which she posted eight points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals on May 20, 2023.

Haley Jones didn’t have to wait long to record the first assist of her WNBA career. In her first regular season contest, the Atlanta Dream rookie guard — taken with the sixth overall pick in the 2023 draft — pushed the tempo with an upstart energy for her new squad, handling the ball as she drew the attention of a Dallas Wings defender before whipping a bounce pass to Allisha Gray for a contested layup. Jones logged one rebound, assist and steal apiece in her debut five-minute run off the bench on May 20, 2023.

Maddy Siegrist’s professional development is advancing nicely for the Dallas Wings. One of the best women’s college basketball scorers of her generation, Siegrist is adjusting to a bench role for her new squad after being selected as the third pick in the draft. Against the Phoenix Mercury, Siegrist boxed out her fellow competitors not once but twice as she battled on the glass for a hard-earned and-1 layup. Siegrist posted the first double-digit scoring game of her young career, shooting 6 of 9 for 14 points while grabbing eight rebounds in the 84-79 Wings win on June 7, 2023.

The first points of a young career are even sweeter when preceded by a strong defensive play. Seattle Storm rookie guard Ivana Dojkić stepped in front of a bad Kiah Stokes pass to earn a steal before sprinting out into the open court and finishing with a fastbreak layup against the reigning champion Las Vegas Aces. Dojkić connected on three of her four field goal attempts for seven points while also posting the first rebound, assist, steal, block and 3-pointer of her career on May 20, 2023.

Zia Cooke’s WNBA debut was both efficient and victorious. The Los Angeles Sparks made Cooke the 10th selection of the 2023 draft, and she went right to work for her new squad. The talented guard used a helpful screen from Dearica Hamby to create enough space to rise up for an elbow jumper that she drained despite a strong defensive effort by Phoenix Mercury guard Sug Sutton. Cooke scored 14 points on 5 of 6 from the field — she made both of her free throws and 3-pointers — while adding two rebounds and two assists in a 15-minute run off the bench in the Sparks’ 94-71 win on May 19, 2023.

What rust? Sug Sutton has reacclimated just fine to the WNBA after two years away. The Phoenix Mercury guard takes the rock the length of the court, blows past a Minnesota Lynx defender with a behind-the-back dribble and drives hard for an and-1 layup. Sutton scored 14 points off the bench and mixed in two rebounds and three assists as Phoenix earned its first victory of the season, a 90-81 decision on May 25, 2023. 

Sug Sutton

In a matchup of the WNBA’s top two teams, Kelsey Plum and the Las Vegas Aces reigned supreme. An All-Star in each of the last two seasons, the sixth-year point guard is having another strong season for the reigning champions. Competing against a worthy adversary in the Connecticut Sun, Plum took advantage of an Aces steal and teammate Candace Parker spotted her up ahead with a strong outlet pass. From there, Plum took care of the rest as she beat her defender with a behind-the-back dribble into a step-back 3-pointer for three of her game-high 25 points. Plum shot 8 of 11 from the field, making all four of her triples while adding three rebounds in a 102-84 victory on July 1, 2023.

Kelsey Plum

The machine keeps rolling along for Candace Parker and the Las Vegas Aces. After a season-opening seven-game winning streak was snapped, Parker and company simply embarked on an even longer string of success. Against the Connecticut Sun, the seven-time All-Star picked Tiffany Hayes’ pocket on defense, led the 2-on-1 break with Jackie Young and finished with a dazzling behind-the-back dish to her Aces teammate for an easy two points. In her first season with defending-champion Las Vegas, two-time champion Parker has fit in seamlessly after posting 15 points, three rebounds, eight assists and three steals in the Aces’ eighth straight win to improve to 15-1 — a 102-84 decision on July 1, 2023. 

Candace Parker

Kalani Brown didn’t make the Dallas Wings roster to open the 2023 season — luckily, she and the team soon found one another again. The former Los Angeles Sparks and Atlanta Dream center is back on a WNBA squad for the first time in two years and making the most of her renewed opportunity. Brown showcased her defensive chops against the Dream as she prevented her former team from converting an offensive rebound into second-chance points, blocking Monique Billings’ shot underneath and having the presence of mind to save the deflection from careening out of bounds. Brown posted her third double-double of the season with 11 points, 14 rebounds and two blocks in 16 minutes in the 85-73 Dallas win on June 20, 2023. 

Kalani Brown

Lexie Brown sent the game to overtime — then for an encore she helped win it. With her Los Angeles Sparks trailing by two with time running out in regulation, Brown weaved her way around a double screen at the top of the key before utilizing a hesitation move to blow by her defender into the lane for a game-tying layup with 12 seconds on the clock. The 2021 WNBA champion also hit a 3-pointer with a minute left in overtime to secure a four-point lead the Sparks would not relinquish. Brown shot 11 for 16 for a game-high 26 points to go with three rebounds as her squad prevailed 99-93 over the Phoenix Mercury on June 2, 2023. 

Lexie Brown

Betnijah Laney spun herself into two hard-earned points — then immediately defended her way into two more. The New York Liberty forward lacked neither style nor hustle against the Seattle Storm as she navigated her way around Jordan Horston’s defense multiple times on a drive to the basket before connecting on a turnaround bank shot. On the next possession, Laney stepped into a Storm passing lane and came away with a steal that led to a 2-on-1 break with Courtney Vandersloot, who caught a pass from Laney before dishing it right back to the trailing wing for a driving layup. Laney’s seven points, three rebounds and two assists helped the Liberty secure an 80-76 victory on July 8, 2023. 

Betnijah Laney

The Indiana Fever may have forgotten that Brittney Griner has led the WNBA in blocks eight times since 2013. Catching Emma Cannon in the act of trying to sneak in a bucket, the 6-foot-9 Phoenix Mercury center drifted over and swatted her attempt with relative ease. The nine-time All-Star was on point on both ends of the court as she tallied a team-high 29 points on 9 of 13 shooting while mixing in six rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks in an 85-82 Phoenix win on June 11, 2023. 

Brittney Griner

Ezi Magbegor’s defensive presence was a critical component in the Seattle Storm earning its first win of the 2023 WNBA season. After falling into a 21-point hole in the first half against the Los Angeles Sparks, the Storm quickly rallied and Magbegor got to work keeping the score close as she switched on to Jordin Canada and landed a forceful rejection on a driving layup attempt to keep the game tied in the third quarter. The fourth-year center would later put the game away with a clutch rejection in the closing seconds of regulation, and Magbegor’s 13 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, two steals and three blocks were vital in the Storm’s 66-63 victory on June 6, 2023

Ezi Magbegor

After a 1-7 start to the 2023 season, Napheesa Collier and the Minnesota Lynx are reversing their fortunes one big shot at a time. After the Lynx had tied the game at 97 in overtime and forced a turnover on the next possession, the stage was set for Collier to play the role of hero. Collier faked a handoff to Kayla McBride following an inbounds pass and instead drove the right side of the lane before burying a game-winning stepback jumper with 1.8 seconds remaining. The three-time All-Star shot 11 of 21 for a team-high 31 points to go with eight rebounds, five assists and six blocks as the Lynx prevailed for the fifth time in seven games in the thrilling 99-97 triumph on June 29, 2023. 

Napheesa Collier

Elena Della Donne finished what her teammate started. The six-time All-Star and two-time MVP backed up her credentials by coming up huge in the clutch for the Washington Mystics as Ariel Atkins misfired on a corner 3-pointer but dutifully chased down the offensive board and flicked it to Della Donne on the perimeter. Della Donne did not waste the second chance as she knocked down the go-ahead triple with 22.1 seconds remaining. The four-time All-WNBA First Team selection posted a game-high 25 points on 10 of 17 shooting to go with three rebounds and two assists in Washington’s 71-69 win over the Chicago Sky on May 26, 2023. 

Elena Delle Donne

Coming off a five-point performance against the reigning champion Las Vegas Aces, DeWanna Bonner flipped the script in fantastic fashion two days later. Following a subpar game with one of the best of her 14-year career, the Connecticut Sun’s four-time All-Star lit up the previously unbeaten Aces from inside and out. Now in the top-15 in WNBA history in career 3-pointers made, Bonner folded the Aces with 5 in 7 attempts, including a trio of confident spot-up and catch-and-shoot downtown jumpers. Bonner also utilized her 6-foot-4 frame to score on close-range shots down low, highlighted by a reverse layup in the post off a dish from Tiffany Hayes. All told, the two-time champion erupted for a franchise-record and career-high 41 points on 16 of 23 shooting while also grabbing seven rebounds in her squad’s 94-77 win on June 8, 2023, dealing the Aces their first loss of the season. 

DeWanna Bonner

In her eighth WNBA season, Courtney Williams found herself in unfamiliar territory. Coming off a season-high in points that snapped a six-game Chicago Sky losing streak, Williams one-upped herself against the Los Angeles Sparks with her first career triple-double. Always looking to pick up her teammates, the unselfish Sky guard drew the defense in on a strong drive to the basket before kicking it out to Alanna Smith for a wide open corner 3-pointer. The Sky made it two straight wins against the Sparks behind Williams’ 12 points, 11 rebounds and career-best 13 assists in a 86-78 triumph on June 30, 2023. 

Courtney Williams

With her Minnesota Lynx mired in a season-opening six-game losing streak, a persistent Tiffany Mitchell had seen enough. Following seven seasons with the Indiana Fever, Mitchell got to savor her first victory in Minnesota when she grabbed an inbounds pass on the right side in a tie game and drove to the basket, only to have her shot blocked by Washington Mystics guard Brittney Sykes. Uninterested in overtime, Mitchell grabbed her own miss in a crowded paint and converted a putback layup with three seconds to play. Mitchell’s 10 points, seven rebounds and two assists were instrumental in delivering the Lynx a much-needed 80-78 win on June 3, 2023.

Tiffany Mitchell

It’s not about how you start, it’s how you finish. Chicago Sky reserve guard Dana Evans was held scoreless in the first half in an early season contest against the Indiana Fever, but proved the axiom true down the stretch. After draining a 3-pointer on the previous possession to give her squad a five-point overtime lead, Evans put the game on ice when she converted a difficult runner in the lane with 26 seconds remaining. She scored all 20 of her points in the second half and overtime and also mixed in two rebounds, seven assists and three steals in the exciting 108-103 triumph on June 6, 2023.

After spending 10 seasons with the Atlanta Dream, Tiffany Hayes is off to a scorching start with the Connecticut Sun. The veteran guard helped her new squad win for the sixth time in seven tries to kick off the 2023 campaign as she drove into the heart of the lane to attempt a contested layup before wrapping a selfless pass around Dallas Wings forward Natasha Howard to a backdoor-cutting Brionna Jones, who finished the possession with an easy bucket. Hayes connected on 6 of 8 shots for 17 points and also mixed in six rebounds and four assists in an 80-74 Sun victory on June 4, 2023. 

Tiffany Hayes

Rhyne Howard and the Atlanta Dream had never experienced an explosion of points quite like this. An All-Star in each of her two WNBA seasons, the offensively-gifted Howard unleashed a deluge on the Los Angeles Sparks from all over the court. She finished off alley-oops in the post, knocked defenders off their feet with crafty moves in the midrange, knocked down six 3-pointers in 12 tries and turned steals into fastbreak layups. Howard shot 14 of 20 for the game for a career-high 43 points, one shy of the franchise record for a single game, although the Dream did set a record with 112 points. The 2022 Rookie of the Year also mixed in two rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocks in the 112-84 win on July 2, 2023. 

Rhyne Howard

A first-time All-Star in her ninth WNBA season, Cheyenne Parker has left little doubt about those credentials. Averaging a career-high in points per game in her third year with the Atlanta Dream, Parker helped her squad end a seven-game losing streak to the Connecticut Sun thanks to some last-second heroics. With the Dream trailing by two in the closing seconds of regulation, Parker grabbed an inbound pass and went to work through multiple defenders, finishing with a game-tying layup with 0.1 seconds on the clock. The Dream ultimately prevailed 92-88 in overtime, and Parker’s 19 points, two rebounds and two steals played a critical role in the June 15, 2023 victory. 

Cheyenne Parker

Marina Mabrey turned adversity into opportunity. With her short-handed Chicago Sky featuring just seven available players, the fifth-year guard responded with the best offensive performance of her career to date. Locked in a tight back-and-forth battle with the Indiana Fever, Mabrey used a screen from Elizabeth Williams as well as a dazzling behind-the-back dribble to free herself up to bury a third-quarter triple. Mabrey scored 19 of her career-high 36 points in the third period, shooting 14 of 22 for the game and 6 of 11 from downtown in addition to six rebounds and two assists on June 15, 2023. 

Marina Mabrey

Searching for that first victory of a fresh season can be a powerful motivator. After dropping their first contest of the 2023 campaign, Allisha Gray and the Atlanta Dream found themselves down double digits in the early stages of a second against the Minnesota Lynx. The 2017 WNBA Rookie of the Year served as a deciding factor in getting her team back in the fight when she nearly turned the ball over in a one-on-one matchup before regaining control thanks to some persistent focus. Once Gray shook free of her defender, she drained a pull-up jumper from just inside the foul line to pull the Dream within 10 points. Atlanta ultimately completed the rally in large part due to Gray’s 26 points and 10 rebounds in the 83-77 come-from-behind win on May 23, 2023. 

Allisha Gray

Shakira Austin has gotten off to a strong start in her second season with the Washington Mystics. The 2022 WNBA All-Rookie Team selection puts the ball on the floor at the foul line, dribbling and spinning past her Chicago Sky defender toward the basket before finishing with an underhand scoop shot off the glass. Austin posted her second double-double in four games to start the 2023 season as she tallied 15 points and 11 rebounds as the Mystics outlasted the Sky 71-69 on May 26, 2023.

NaLyssa Smith concluded her 2022 rookie season with a spot on the WNBA All-Rookie Team. She’s picked up right where she left off in Year 2. The Indiana Fever forward — whose field-goal percentage, points and rebounds per game averages have all increased — showed off her court vision against the Minnesota Lynx while pushing the transition attack and threading a strong bounce pass between multiple defenders to an in-stride Kelsey Mitchell for a possession-capping layup. Smith recorded 12 points, 12 rebounds and two assists for her fourth double-double in seven games as the Fever upended the Lynx 71-69 on June 9, 2023. 

NaLyssa Smith

In her first All-Star campaign, Kelsey Mitchell added a game-winner to her highlight reel. The sixth-year Indiana Fever guard saved her best for last against the Chicago Sky when she grabbed an inbounds pass near midcourt, took a few dribbles to her right and calmly stuck a stepback jumper just inside the arc over a pair of defenders with one second remaining. Mitchell posted 15 points and five assists in her squad’s exhilarating 92-90 win on June 15, 2023.
