Drawing a collective gasp from the road crowd, the 2022 No. 2 pick starred in his role of crowd-silencer, upping his play for 36 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, two steals, two blocks, and two 3-pointers. Becoming just NBA history’s second-ever rookie to produce those numbers, Holmgren was heroic in the OT victory on November 18, 2023.

The future is now for Paolo Banchero and the Orlando Magic. With one of the strongest offensive rookie campaigns in the last decade, Banchero showed why he was worthy of the number one draft pick all season long. A disruptor on both ends of the court against the Indiana Pacers, Banchero first cut off a passing lane by intercepting the ball before running a 2-on-1 break with Franz Wagner, one of two top-10 Orlando picks from 2021. Banchero tallied a team-high 23 points — along with three rebounds, four assists and two steals — in leading the Magic to a 126-120 win on January 25, 2023. A First Team All-Rookie selection, Banchero averaged 20.0 points, 6.9 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game to become Orlando’s first Rookie of the Year recipient since the 2000-01 season.

With every flip of the calendar, there stands the realistic chance of Victor Wembanyama —  sometimes through on-court excellence, and at other times on the box score — offering something the NBA world has seldom seen before. On November 13, 2024, in the highest-scoring game of his career to date, the San Antonio Spurs’ French phenom found the necessary avenues to accomplish both at once. Slightly delayed in his arrival as the final player downfloor, yet promptly on time for the celebration of a new career-high, Wembanyama lets fly an audacious 31-footer, marking both his eighth trifecta, and a 18-point lead for San Antonio. Helped somewhat by the Washington Wizards’ never-say-die comeback attempt, Wembanyama parlayed additional opportunities into a single-game scoring total for the record books. In just 32 minutes time, the 7-foot-4 star’s lighting of the scoreboards confirmed a 50-point masterpiece, coronating him as NBA history’s fourth-youngest to achieve such a feat, as well as its tallest. Ever the stat sheet stuffer, Wembanyama’s 50-piece was accompanied by eyebrow-raising efficiency (18-of-29), alongside six rebounds, two assists, one steal, three blocks, and six 3-pointers.

One surefire way to know you’ve got a talented prospect on your hands? They don’t shy away from battles against the game’s biggest stars. Creating a switch in a pick-and-roll, Detroit Pistons guard Cade Cunningham works his handle, taking the league’s reigning MVP for a ride with a sharp behind-the-back before finishing the play with a three-point bucket. Against a top-tier Denver Nuggets team, Cunningham showed why he was the No. 1 pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, finishing with 34 points on 14-of-26 shooting, adding eight rebounds, eight assists, four blocks and two steals on January 25, 2022.

Standing or moving, guarded or unguarded, have no fears: if you play for the Denver Nuggets, Nikola Jokić will find you in a position to score. Helping orchestrate a possession that featured eight different passes —  including three of his own —  Jokić puts pressure on the Washington Wizards’ defense, drawing in two defenders before dropping a dish over the top to Aaron Gordon for a slam. One of the game’s most proficient passers, Jokić brought that and more in the 127-109 win, with 29 points on just 14 shots, adding 13 boards, eight assists, two steals and a block on March 16, 2022.

From the moment he arrived in the NBA, LeBron James has feasted on errant passes, and here he does it twice. Rotating over to help cover a pick-and-roll, the Los Angeles Lakers superstar hustles into a passing lane to corral a steal, setting himself up for a one-man transition and a baby windmill slam. Not done yet, the future Hall-of-Famer follows up by picking off another pass on the way to an easy two-handed jam. James was on his game in the 106-96 victory over the Brooklyn Nets on January 25, 2022, tallying up 33 points, seven rebounds, six assists, three steals and two blocks.

The LeBron James-Dwyane Wade connection is one of the most devastating duos you’ll ever see in transition. LeBron finds Wade streaking on the break, sprints down court and slams home a return feed from Wade, off the glass, with an incredible left-handed flush. LeBron finished with 19 points, eight boards and four dimes in Miami’s 101-95 win over the Los Angeles Lakers on December 25, 2013.

On the same night he was named on the NBA’s 75th Anniversary Team, Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James found himself with the perfect opportunity to ice the game for his team with one final shot. James takes his time on the mismatch and knocks down a textbook fadeaway jumper over two defenders for the win. It was a storybook ending for Team LeBron in his adopted hometown of Cleveland, Ohio. James finished with 24 points, eight assists, six rebounds and the game-winning J to defeat Team Durant and move to 5-0 as an All-Star captain on February 20, 2022.

When LeBron James hits the open court, the world stops and watches. In a December 23, 2005 matchup against the Indiana Pacers, the third-year Cleveland Cavaliers forward chases down a stolen ball, crosses halfcourt all alone and explodes for a two-handed, windmill reverse slam. James logged 14 points, eight rebounds and nine assists in the win.

No matter the age, situation, or defensive coverage, Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James makes the game of basketball look effortless. James showcases his world-class athleticism by sneaking backdoor on a cut, turning teammate Malik Monk’s lob into a reverse alley-oop slam to send the crowd into a frenzy. James racked up a 30-point, 12-rebound, five-assist performance on January 19, 2022.

It’ll take a lot more than friendship and a shared 2016 title to spare Kevin Love the destructive wrath of LeBron James at full throttle. Well-positioned to capitalize on a gap in the Cleveland Cavaliers defense, the 37-year-old Los Angeles Lakers forward drives straight to the paint and takes off skyward for a thundering flush over his former teammate. James dropped 38 points, 10 rebounds and 12 assists in the March 21, 2022 victory.

When your blocked shots have visibly notable exit velocity, you’re doing something right on defense. Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James, already an all-time chasedown block artist, picks up a surging Collin Sexton in transition then launches his layup attempt to the scorers’ table in a January 25, 2021 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

LeBron James is a load for any transition defense to handle. Give him two teammates in a 3-on-2, and it’s game over. After generating a stop on defense, the Los Angeles Lakers star sprints down the court while the ball advances up the floor, then relays a pass from Kent Bazemore over his shoulder to Anthony Davis for a fastbreak jam. James started Year 19 off on a hot note, with 34 points, 11 rebounds, five assists, a steal and a block against the Golden State Warriors on October 19, 2021.

After 18 years of watching him make it look easy, you’d think it would get old watching LeBron James take off with an open lane to the basket. James catches an outlet pass from Nikola Jokić then hovers through the paint for a double-clutch reverse slam in the NBA All-Star Game on March 7, 2021.

LeBron James can turn nothing into something with the flip of a switch. With a full head of steam, James makes a quick cross around one defender, then ducks into the paint and reaches back for an incredible, one-handed power dunk over Jaren Jackson Jr. The Los Angeles Lakers superstar was fully locked in with a game-high 35 points, nine rebounds and seven assists in a January 9, 2022 matchup against the Memphis Grizzlies.

LeBron James sizes up a defensive rebound as it caroms off the rim then immediately throws a perfect spiral down the court to a streaking Kentavious Caldwell-Pope on January 10, 2021. James put up 18 points, seven rebounds and seven assists in the Los Angeles Lakers’ win over the Houston Rockets.

Luka Dončić is a talent so unique that even his triple-doubles make history. The four-time All-Star scored six points in the final 15 seconds of regulation, including an acrobatic and-1 putback followed by a purposely missed free throw that he corralled and turned into a circus shot that forced overtime with one second left. Dončić then scored seven of 11 overtime points, the highlight being a smooth fadeaway over Julius Randle that gave him 60 points on 21 of 31 from the field to pair with 21 rebounds and 10 assists. The 60 points were a Dallas Mavericks franchise record, and Dončić’s seventh triple-double of the season was the first 60-20-10 one in league history in the thrilling 126-121 victory over the New York Knicks on December 27, 2022.

Steph Curry is “an electric player off the dribble” who “can do it in any way.” In one of KD’s favorite plays of the season from his former teammate, the Golden State Warriors superstar guard pushes the ball up the court and lulls his defender to sleep before hitting a long crossover and blowing past him to take it straight to the cup and loft a layup over the outstretched arm of another challenger at the hoop. Steph had 27 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds in a 117-109 win over the Sacramento Kings on October 24, 2021.

Kevin Durant’s much-anticipated Phoenix Suns debut was well worth the three-week wait. The 13-time All-Star fit in seamlessly with his new teammates as he makes an impact on both ends — first blocking a Mark Williams’ shot on the low block before burying a catch-and-shoot triple off a feed from Devin Booker on the ensuing possession. Durant 23 points on 10 for 15 shooting to go with six rebounds, two assists and two blocks in Phoenix’s 105-91 road victory over the Charlotte Hornets on March 1, 2023.

As predictably as the rising sun, Los Angeles Lakers megastar Magic Johnson saved his best for the Boston Celtics. Down by a single point in the final seconds of a 1987 NBA Finals rematch on December 11, 1987, Johnson knew exactly where he needed to catch the rock out of an inbound scheme in order to silence his long-time rivals. Cutting backdoor against a defender on the perimeter, the 6-foot-9 legend corrals an inbound pass in stride, leaps off one leg and buries a go-ahead bucket off glass. For Johnson, it was two points in an 18-point, eight-rebound, 17-assist masterpiece, a regular-season triumph worth a celebratory walk-off; for his cross-country foes, a stark reminder of the purple and gold dynasty that dominated so much of the previous decade.

For the first time in 38 years, the NBA crowned a new scoring leader, the man who had met and exceeded otherworldly expectations since the moment he set foot on a basketball court. With time running down in the third quarter of what fast became a celebration of a legacy, LeBron James buried the 38,387th and 38,388th points of his career on an unguardable fadeaway from the elbow. With those points, an emotional James eclipsed a record that had stood since April 1984 — eight months before he was born — doing so on the strength of a 20-point first half followed by a 16-point third frame that showcased the offensive firepower that burns as bright as ever 20 seasons into an iconic career. The four-time MVP, NBA champion and Finals MVP scored 38 points on 13 for 20 shooting for the Los Angeles Lakers in his record-breaking performance against the Oklahoma City Thunder on February 7, 2023. 

With his above-the-rim abilities and breathtaking athleticism, Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant has become a walking highlight. Here, Morant adds to that reel, leaping to snag a 94-foot inbound pass from the other side of the court and draining a buzzer-beating alley-oop jumpshot all in one motion. That was one of many plays Morant made, as he burned the San Antonio Spurs for a franchise-record 52 points and seven rebounds in a 118-105 win on February 28, 2022.

“So quick, so fast, a lot of length as well…” Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant “can do anything.” In one of KD’s favorite plays of the season, Morant showcases some craft and guile, using a behind-the-back and a pump fake to get a LA Clippers big into the air before ducking under to float in a seemingly effortless off-hand, up-and-under scoop finish. Morant shined under California’s bright lights with a 28-point and eight-assist performance to power Memphis to a 120-114 win on October 23, 2021.

“Nikola Jokić. League MVP for a reason.” Kevin Durant narrates one from his favorite plays of the season from the game-changing Denver Nuggets center as Jokić gets open for an inbound pass, catches it at the top of the perimeter, quickly squares up and fires a high-flying triple over the Portland Trail Blazers’ Jusuf Nurkić. The reigning MVP notched 28 points and flirted with a triple double in an emphatic win at home on November 14, 2021.

When Anthony Edwards gets out in transition, “there’s nothing you can do to stop him.” KD narrates ones of his top plays from Edwards this season as the Minnesota Timberwolves guard drops a swift in-and-out crossover combo to get by the initial defender, then takes no prisoners at the rim with a dynamic dunk over the last line of defense. Minnesota’s budding star had a huge night in 40 minutes of action against the New Orleans Pelicans on October 25, 2021: 28 points, nine rebounds and three dimes.

A nightmare to defend on offense, Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson is also capable of taking on the game’s brightest perimeter stars on the other end as well. Motivated to perform against the NBA’s then-reigning champions, Thompson takes on the tough task of checking Milwaukee Bucks All-Star Khris Middleton, sticking to his hip on a hesitation dribble before keeping pace and swatting away a layup attempt. Thompson was in postseason form early, putting together a scorching-hot 38-point, six-rebound, five-assist night along with eight three-pointers, a steal and a block in the 122-109 win on March 12, 2022.

In his short time as a Charlotte Hornets star, LaMelo Ball has proven there’s no situation he can’t make a highlight out of. Mixing hustle, IQ, and creativity into one play, Ball tips the loose ball to himself before being met by a Milwaukee Bucks defender, then, without hesitation, fires a behind-the-back, on-the-money bounce pass to his big man for an easy reverse jam. Ball’s box score was equally brilliant, as the All-Star guard chipped in 19 points, nine rebounds and eight assists in a 114-106 win over the defending champs on January 8, 2022.

No matter how fierce the defense or how bright the spotlight, Larry Bird was going to deliver when it mattered most. In Game 4 of the 1987 NBA Finals, his team within reach of knotting an instant classic series with 12 seconds remaining, Bird did everything conceivably possible to deliver a miracle for his defending champion Boston Celtics - though fate would intervene. Smothered by a Los Angeles Lakers defender until an opportunity to break free and sneak into the corner presents itself, Bird cues up in front of the opponents’ bench and drains an unforgettable three-pointer that triggers a frenzy in the Boston Garden, setting the stage for an iconic finish to one of the most beloved showdowns in NBA history. Though his long-time friend and rival Magic Johnson would soon wrest the spotlight back with his 'junior junior skyhook' counter, history was made. This was the type of difficult shot that Bird made routine throughout a Hall of Fame career that included 12 All-Star appearances, three MVP awards and three championship rings. He finished the June 9, 1987 contest with 21 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and two blocks.

When he’s in the zone, Kevin Durant isn’t just a threat — he’s unguardable. The Brooklyn Nets superstar works his way through the Detroit Pistons defense from the perimeter through the key and to the hoop for an up-and-under reverse layup that banks in off the glass. The basket counted for two of Durant’s 51 points, marking it as an NBA season high at the time on December 12, 2021.

There are three-point shooters who change games, and three-point shooters who change the game. Steph Curry is definitively the latter. In a home opener to kick off another potential MVP season, the Golden State Warriors guard pushes the ball up the court and heaves it to a teammate in the corner. Curry then chases his own pass and calls for the ball back to sink a high-flying, catch-and-shoot triple. The seven-time All-Star hit his first 10 field goals of the night on October 21, 2021, while pouring in 25 of his 45 points in the first quarter alone.

Draymond Green’s a true extension of his coach on the floor, able to make reads on the fly and adjust accordingly to create a positive result for his squad. Here, the Golden State Warriors All-Star brings the ball up, directs traffic and motions his teammate to cut to the basket in time for a perfect feed. Green dropped six points, pulled down seven rebounds and had six assists in a 126-112 win over the Washington Wizards on March 14, 2022.

Devin Booker is “just so crafty with the ball”. In one of Kevin Durant’s top plays of the season from one of his favorite players, the Phoenix Suns All-Star guard takes on his Dallas Mavericks defender at the top of the key, then spins into the paint to find 7-foot-3 Kristaps Porziņģis between himself and the rim. Booker executes a flawless up-and-under as he falls to the floor and gets it to go off the glass for two of his 24 points in a 105-98 victory on November 17, 2021.

Derrick Rose’s insane speed and athleticism has made him an underrated shot blocker at the point guard spot. The New York Knicks guard stays with his man off the ball and leaps to reject his layup into the baseline stands. The former MVP was very effective with 16 points and six assists off the bench in a December 2, 2021 matchup against the Chicago Bulls.

At the heart of the Brooklyn Nets’ unforgettable push to contend for a title is nine-time All-Star and franchise catalyst Kevin Durant. Durant runs the floor as his teammates work in masterful lockstep to recover a steal against the Cleveland Cavaliers then rises up to throw down an off-glass alley-oop from teammate Mike James. Durant finished the May 16, 2021 contest with 23 points, eight rebounds and 13 assists.

Whether he’s shooting a three or driving to the lane, when Steph Curry has the ball, he commands a defense’s full attention. Here, he frees himself with a quick crossover before using his gravity and basketball IQ to fake a layup attempt before dishing a smooth behind-the-back dime to star teammate Draymond Green. Curry stuffed the stat sheet with 33 points, five rebounds, six assists and six steals in a 105-90 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers on November 28, 2021. 

Donovan Mitchell is “one of the best scorers in the league” and his signature step-back is “elite.” In one of KD’s favorite plays of the season, Mitchell disguises a strong drive to the rim, then crosses back beyond the arc before splashing a triple over the outstretched arms of the defender. The Utah Jazz go-to guy finished with 26 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals in a November 11, 2021 matchup with the Indiana Pacers.

Some of Zach LaVine’s most exciting slams come via action on the baseline. LaVine sizes up his defender, makes a swift spin move to get around him and goes up for a powerful, one-handed jam that rocks the rim. The Chicago Bulls All-Star contributed 26 points, five rebounds and three assists in a 126-115 victory over the Orlando Magic on February 1, 2022.

Since entering the NBA, LaMelo Ball has made the Charlotte Hornets a must-see attraction. Here, he gives a Milwaukee Bucks defender a view from the ground, immobilizing him with a sharp between-the-leg crossover before earning a hockey assist on a Kelly Oubre Jr. three-pointer. Ball had highlight after highlight on December 1, 2021, exploding for 36 points, nine assists, five rebounds, three steals and eight threes.

When the Golden State Warriors get a numbers advantage on the break, it’s wise to get your cameras ready. Taking advantage of a teammate’s excellent defense, Warriors rookie forward Jonathan Kuminga leaks out in transition, outrunning each of the Sacramento Kings players down the floor before starting up his own in-game Slam Dunk Contest with a show-stopping reverse cradle jam. Kuminga had highlights in abundance with 18 points, seven rebounds and a steal in a 126-114 victory on February 3, 2022.

There are few tougher tasks in sport than having to check Allen Iverson out on the perimeter. The Philadelphia 76ers legend wastes no time flashing his explosive first step against his Washington Wizards defender before drawing him off balance with a crossover in the opposite direction and making him touch earth with one final blow on March 3, 2006. Iverson finished the game with 47 points, 12 assists and a W.

George goes right at his mismatched rookie defender, flashing his handle with a crossover behind his legs, then pivots into a beautiful spinning jumper. The LA Clippers star flirted with a triple-double in a 119-115 win over the Los Angeles Lakers on December 3, 2021, finishing with 19 points, nine assists, eight rebounds and two steals.

It’s not just the athleticism, it’s the attitude. Minnesota Timberwolves rookie Anthony Edwards shows no fear taking off from the three-point line to run up and plaster a massive slam on the Golden State Warriors on January 25, 2021.

Just weeks into his NBA career, Josh Giddey has NBA fans and superstars alike buzzing about his movement of the ball. In his first regular season game with the Oklahoma City Thunder, the rook demonstrates masterful handles, simultaneously losing his defender and drawing two more before floating the rock to a teammate for a layup. In addition to his smooth maneuvers on the court, Giddey locked in 10 rebounds in his debut on October 20, 2021.
