Anthony Edwards gets behind the Chicago Bulls defense running the break and is rewarded with nothing but open space between him and the basket as the Minnesota Timberwolves’ third-year star takes flight and throws down an unforgettable slam. Then the eight-time All-Star comes up big again less than 20 seconds later, sticking to Tyrese Haliburton like glue before swatting away the go-ahead attempt. Once the 57th overall selection snares a defensive rebound he is off and running, traversing the court and hitting the Denver Nuggets defense with a behind-the-back move to gain entry to the lane before finishing with a runner in the paint. Walker had a busy first four professional minutes, making his only shot for two points while adding two rebounds and an assist in the 135-110 Portland Trail Blazers triumph on October 24, 2022.

Bryce McGowens may have missed his only shot attempt in his first NBA game, but he made up for it with defense. Squaring off against the San Antonio Spurs in the first game of the season, the 40th overall pick thwarts a Spurs drive to the basket with a block and change of possession for his new squad. The first four minutes of McGowens’ NBA career were a successful first impression, as his first career block made an impact as the Charlotte Hornets won all four quarters in the runaway 129-102 victory on October 19, 2022.

On a nightly basis, Nikola Jokić makes the difficult look routine. The two-time reigning MVP has something special planned for the Houston Rockets, catching the ball in the post before burying a turnaround baseline jumper in rhythm on just one foot. The four-time All-Star tormented the Rockets all night, scoring 32 points on 11-of-17 shooting — his third time hitting 30 points in the past four games — while also grabbing 12 rebounds and dishing out eight assists in the Denver Nuggets’ 129-113 victory on November 28, 2022.

Trailing by three points with 1.3 seconds remaining in regulation, Matt Ryan was subbed into the game with one objective — tie the ballgame. Mission accomplished for the Los Angeles Lakers newcomer. Off a perfectly-executed inbound pass from Austin Reaves, the sharpshooting Ryan, in his Top Shot debut, has just enough time to set his feet and force overtime with a corner three-pointer directly in front of the Lakers’ bench. It does not matter that the Memphis Grizzlies star has his back turned to the play with the New Orleans Pelicans attempting a frontcourt inbounds pass, as Morant times his turn perfectly and plucks a steal from midair. Morant races the other way and gets by Larry Nance Jr. with a dazzling behind-the-back dribble before finishing with an athletic finger roll. While the Pelicans won the game, the two-time All-Star finished with a game-high 36 points to go with eight rebounds, four assists and three steals on November 15, 2022.

Following a thunderous James rejection of Paul George, Austin Reaves scoops up the loose ball and motors the other way in transition before lobbing a flawless alley-oop pass to Lonnie Walker IV, who finishes the slam to get the home crowd on its feet. Reaves had an effective 22-minute run off the bench, posting four points, four rebounds and two assists in the Los Angeles Lakers’ intra-city rivalry game against the LA Clippers on October 20, 2022.

He’s so good that he doesn’t even need his eyes to make spectacular plays. Such is life when you’re Giannis Antetokounmpo, who continues to make the impossible happen on a nightly basis. Returning from a two-game absence against the Atlanta Hawks, the Milwaukee Bucks superstar makes up for lost time by flicking a no-look over-the-shoulder dime to a waiting Bobby Portis Jr., who finishes the possession with a layup. It was another typical night at the office for the two-time MVP, who finished the November 14, 2022 game with 27 points, eight rebounds and four assists.

Fresh off achieving a national championship in college, Christian Braun has brought an unselfish, winning style of basketball with him to the Denver Nuggets. Against the Utah Jazz, the rookie shows he’s willing to do whatever it takes to secure a victory, fearlessly stepping in front of Malik Beasley to turn a wide-open dunk into a ferocious rejection. Braun continued to make an impact off the Nuggets bench, chipping in 10 points, six rebounds, an assist and a block in Denver’s 117-101 triumph on October 28, 2022.

Tyrese Haliburton was a revelation in 26 games for the Indiana Pacers after a midseason acquisition in February 2022. To the delight of Pacers fans, the talented third-year point guard has picked up right where he left off to open the 2022-23 season. In Indiana’s first game against the Washington Wizards, Haliburton pushes the ball up the court and takes on all comers, using a yo-yo-dribble-hesi combination to fool the defense before clearing a path to the rim and throwing down a dunk. Haliburton scored a game-high 26 points to go with four rebounds and seven assists on October 19, 2022.

In just his sixth professional game, Mark Williams gave the Charlotte Hornets an exciting glimpse into their future. Making his Top Shot debut, the 15th overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft sends a Josh Giddey shot into the crowd with a merciless rejection at the rim. Williams shot a sparkling 7-for-7 for a career-high 17 points and 13 rebounds, along with two assists, two steals and two blocks in 21 productive minutes off the bench in his squad’s 121–113 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder on December 29, 2022.

Playing in just his fifth game with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Mitchell receives a rude awakening courtesy of the Boston Celtics’ 2021 All-Star. When Brown picks off a Mitchell bounce pass, he and teammate Marcus Smart motor the other way on a 2-on-1 advantage. Brown collects a bounce pass and then takes flight, slamming an angry one-handed dunk on top of his helpless opponent. Brown put together a solid performance of 32 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals on October 28, 2022.

Charging straight into the lane against three San Antonio Spurs defenders is not for the faint of heart — but it is for Zion Williamson. The New Orleans Pelicans All-Star forward scoops up a bounce pass on the elbow and makes his move, putting the ball on the floor and muscling his way to a layup despite spinning his way into a traffic jam underneath the basket. Williamson poured in a season-high 32 points on 14-of-18 from the field to go along with 11 rebounds and two steals in his squad’s 129-110 win on November 23, 2022.

Donvan Mitchell’s honeymoon with the Cleveland Cavaliers continued against the Los Angeles Lakers. Taking advantage of a favorable one-on-one matchup with Austin Reaves, Mitchell hits his defender with some slick dribbles before suddenly pulling up for a stepback triple that helps the Cavs pull away late in the fourth quarter. Mitchell logged his second 40-point performance of the season, posting 43 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals in Cleveland’s 116-102 triumph on December 6, 2022.

One year after his breakout campaign, Jordan Poole continues to evolve offensively. Pressed into starting duty for a resting Klay Thompson, the fourth-year guard keeps the Golden State Warriors offense humming with a strong drive into the paint before dropping off a beauty of a behind-the-back no-look pass to a cutting Jonathan Kuminga. Poole’s 21 points, two rebounds, five assists and five three-pointers helped deliver the Warriors a 120-101 win over the Houston Rockets on December 3, 2022.

Competing against the Detroit Pistons, Barnes takes a pass in stride while driving into the lane, then drops off a slick one-handed bounce pass while airborne to a cutting Dalano Banton. Barnes’ eight points, five rebounds, four assists, one steal and one block made a major impact in Toronto’s 115-111 victory on November 14, 2022.

The New York Knicks’ reserve center continues to be his squad’s resident alley-oop recipient, this time against the Utah Jazz as he gets teed up for a perfectly-executed lob from Immanuel Quickley. The second-year big man was strong in 25 productive minutes, making 5-of-7 field-goal attempts for 11 points, while adding 13 rebounds, two assists and a steal in the Knicks’ 118-111 road win on November 15, 2022.

In year 15, Russell Westbrook can still turn any pass on the court into an assist. The Detroit Pistons learned that the hard way as Westbrook — inbounding far away from the basket — needed less than two seconds to whip a three-quarter court laser into the hands of Lonnie Walker IV, who buries the catch-and-shoot triple to beat the halftime buzzer. Ten of Westbrook’s game-high 12 assists came in the first half, as the nine-time All-Star added 10 points and five rebounds in the Los Angeles Lakers’ 128-121 victory on November 18, 2022.

Now that’s how you announce your presence to the rest of the league. A year after averaging just three points per game in less than eight minutes a night, Nick Richards has burst on to the scene for the Charlotte Hornets in the early stages of the 2022-23 season. After erupting for 19 points and 10 rebounds in the season opener, the reserve center one-ups himself against the Atlanta Hawks. Executing a flawless pick-and-roll with fellow reserve James Bouknight, Richards takes a bounce pass from his teammate and rises up for an emphatic one-handed slam. It was a perfect game for Richards, who made all nine of his field goal attempts in a 20-point, 11-rebound, two-block effort in 20 efficient minutes in Charlotte’s 126-109 win on October 23, 2022.

Jamal Murray looks like his old self again, which is bad news for the rest of the league. Against the Los Angeles Lakers, the Denver point guard uses a pick from Nikola Jokić to gain access into the lane. Met by a wall of defenders, Murray wisely passes up the shot attempt and instead opts for an acrobatic dish to his MVP teammate, who punctuates the possession with a floater. Murray produced 13 points, four rebounds, six assists and two steals in helping Denver prevail 110-99 on October 26, 2022.

After taking the G League by storm with his explosive scoring prowess, Jaden Hardy was ready for the big stage. The Dallas Mavericks rookie introduces himself to the New Orleans Pelicans in style, using his momentum to blow by Kira Lewis Jr. with his left hand into the lane before switching to his right and finishing with an up-and-under layup around Willy Hernangomez. Hardy matched his career-high with 15 points on 7 for 9 shooting while adding two steals in his squad’s 127-117 win on January 7, 2023.

Most players can go an entire career without scoring 50 points in a game — Joel Embiid did it twice in less than a month. After dropping 59 on the Utah Jazz on Nov. 13, Embiid hits the Charlotte Hornets with an encore performance as he trails James Harden up the court before collecting a behind-the-back pass from his All-Star teammate and rumbling down the lane for a strong two-handed slam. Embiid became the first player to score 50 points twice during the 2022-23 campaign as well as the third Philadelphia 76er to hit the mark multiple times in the same season after putting up 53 points, 12 rebounds and three assists in a 131-113 win on December 11, 2022.

Even when you send a double team Trae Young’s way, he still finds ways to beat you. When two Detroit Pistons converge behind the arc to prevent him from bombing a triple, the two-time All-Star does the next best thing and whips a no-look pass into the post to Clint Capela, who converts the layup attempt while drawing a foul. Young’s elite ability to make any shot or pass makes him nearly impossible to defend, as his 36 points, two rebounds, 12 assists and four triples were enough to sink the Pistons 136-112 on October 28, 2022.

As the LA Clippers were quick to discover, fancy footwork in the frontcourt is no fun to defend. Now in his second season, Houston Rockets center Alperen Şengün continues to impress — after setting a screen for a teammate, the 6-foot-11 Turkish big man collapses toward the basket and catches a pass in the paint before pivoting around his defender with a nimble spin move. The subsequent layup was good for two of Şengün’s team-high 26 points, and he also chipped in 13 rebounds, two assists and a steal in the November 2, 2022 Western Conference showdown.

The Utah Jazz didn’t learn their lesson the first time they tried to trespass in Deandre Ayton’s paint, so he was more than willing to remind them again. Mike Conley gains access to the lane with a pretty crossover move but fails to account for the Phoenix Suns’ center, who viciously denies the attempt. When the deflection falls into Conley’s hands again, he decides to give it another shot and is promptly denied. The Suns lost a heartbreaker, but Ayton pulled his weight with 17 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists and three blocks on November 18, 2022.

Following a historic first quarter, there was no stopping LaMelo Ball and the Charlotte Hornets. Ball and his teammates were in perfect synergy all night, as he gathers a dump-off from Mason Plumlee before whipping a fabulous no-look pass back to the cutting center that ends in an easy deuce. The Hornets matched an NBA record with a staggering 51 first-quarter points, and Ball’s 24 points, three rebounds, 12 assists, two steals and seven three-pointers kept the Milwaukee Bucks chasing all night in Charlotte’s runaway 138-109 victory on January 6, 2023.

LaMelo Ball

Jalen Brunson’s handle is so shifty that even extremely athletic players have trouble keeping up. Jeremy Sochan puts in an admirable effort in trying to stick with the New York Knicks point guard, but Brunson’s bag of tricks proves to be too deep as he eludes the San Antonio Spurs rookie in a man-to-man matchup long enough to bury a mid-range jumper. Brunson erupted for a career-high 38 points on 17 of 27 shooting and the Knicks needed every one of them — along with seven rebounds and six assists — in the 117-114 nail-biting victory on January 4, 2023.

For the 20th time in his decorated career, Paul George did something most NBA players won’t sniff even once — score 40 points in a game. Against the Sacramento Kings, the seven-time All-Star enters total domination mode, taking a pass atop the key before stepping on the accelerator and hitting the defense with an unguardable spin move en route to two of his 40. The LA Clippers needed every one of them to get past the pesky Kings, as George’s 40 points, six rebounds, six assists and two steals were the difference in the 111-109 road win on October 22, 2022. The output made George the 14th active player to score 40 or more in a game at least 20 times.

On a night when his Cleveland Cavaliers shot better than 60 percent from the field, Darius Garland was happy to play the role of facilitator. He looks good doing so too, deftly spinning his way around a Philadelphia 76ers defender while catching a pass, then whipping a one-handed laser pass through traffic to a wide-open Dean Wade underneath the basket. Garland deposited 21 points while also adding two rebounds and nine assists in Cleveland’s 113-85 win on November 30, 2022.

Jaren Jackson Jr. made sure that it would be a happy New Year for the Memphis Grizzlies. Kicking off 2023 in style, Jackson Jr. protects the rim with vigor against the Sacramento Kings when he blocks a driving Malik Monk not once but twice. The Grizzlies’ talented fifth-year power forward made magic happen on both ends of the court, tallying 14 points, seven rebounds, two assists and three rejections in helping his squad win its third consecutive game, a 118-108 decision on January 1, 2023.

If you didn’t know Dalano Banton’s name before, you sure do now. With his shorthanded Toronto Raptors missing three key players against the Detroit Pistons, Banton took the opportunity to introduce himself. The second-year guard was a star on both ends, first creating a steal when he picks rookie Jaden Ivey’s pocket and then capping off the possessions with an emphatic slam on the other end. Banton exploded for a career-high 27 points while also chipping in four rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocks in Toronto’s gritty 115-111 triumph on November 14, 2022.

Just in case anybody forgot, there isn’t a shot on the court that Fred VanVleet can’t make. After missing the Toronto Raptors’ previous three games with an injury, the 2022 first-time All-Star issues a harsh reminder to the Chicago Bulls at how deadly his stroke is when he’s feeling it. The seventh-year point guard shakes off suffocating defensive pressure from Chicago’s Ayo Dosunmu, as VanVleet dribbles behind his back before absorbing contact and somehow getting an off-balance jumper to fall. VanVleet was at his very best, producing season-highs of 30 points and 11 assists to go with five rebounds and three-pointers apiece in Toronto’s 113-104 victory on November 6, 2022.

The best in the business know how to improvise on the fly — just ask Kawhi Leonard. The two-time champion and NBA Finals MVP triggers his backup plan on a strong drive to the basket, first thinking dunk before deciding on a difficult reverse layup to avoid having his attempt swatted by a trailing Kyle Kuzma. Leonard scored in a variety of ways, tallying a game-high 31 points along with nine rebounds and three steals as his LA Clippers staged a fourth-quarter rally to send the Washington Wizards to their ninth-straight loss, a 102-93 decision on December 17, 2022.

Now in his fourth season, Keldon Johnson has blossomed from a very good player into the face of the San Antonio Spurs’ offensive attack. Following a timely dish from teammate Josh Richardson, Johnson takes care of the rest, pump faking a defender out of his shoes before lining up and draining a wide-open corner three-pointer. Johnson scored a team-high 33 points to go with three rebounds, four assists, two steals and six triples in a 129-124 triumph over the Chicago Bulls on October 28, 2022.

When he’s feeling it from long range, Kevin Love is one of the most feared bench weapons in the NBA. The New York Knicks found that out the hard way, as the five-time All-Star takes a pass on the wing from Donovan Mitchell and buries a contested triple while drawing a foul. Love had a fourth quarter for the ages, connecting on five three-pointers and scoring 16 points as the Cleveland Cavaliers sank the visiting Knicks by out-scoring them by 22 points in the period. All told, Love scored 29 points in just 22 minutes on 8-for-13 from long range while adding eight rebounds in the 121-108 triumph on October 30, 2022.

Sometimes the key to rebounding is just wanting it more than the other guy. Thomas Bryant proves to be adept at turning garbage into gold for the Los Angeles Lakers when a Dennis Schröder triple is off the mark, grabbing the offensive board through sheer force of will and depositing the put-back for a critical two points. Bryant was brilliant against the Sacramento Kings, tallying 29 points on 12 of 14 shooting to go with 14 rebounds in the Lakers’ nail-biting 136-134 victory on January 7, 2023.

Never underestimate how big of an impact fit can have on a player’s success with a team. After being waived by the Philadelphia 76ers a couple of days before the start of the season, Charles Bassey quickly found himself a new home with the San Antonio Spurs. It hasn’t taken long for the second-year reserve center to leave a lasting impression, as he shows off his hustle and defensive aptitude by chasing down George Hill of the Milwaukee Bucks and emphatically spiking his shot attempt into the hardwood. Deni Avdija looks like he has a clear path to the rim against the Denver Nuggets, that is until Gordon springs from behind to deny the attempt with a clean block off the glass. The Denver forward played with swagger on both ends of the court, producing 22 points, seven rebounds and three assists in his squad’s 141-128 victory on December 14, 2022.

As long as it goes in it doesn’t matter how you got there. Locked in a tight battle against the Memphis Grizzlies, Marcus Smart drives into the lane before coming head-to-head with Santi Aldama. Smart absorbs a body blow that sends him toppling to the hardwood and on the way down flicks up a desperation shot that somehow finds the bottom of the net. The underrated Boston Celtics point guard produced a solid all-around game with 15 points, seven rebounds and 12 assists in his team’s hard-fought 109-106 victory on November 7, 2022.

Talk about making a first impression. In the first start of his NBA career, Santi Aldama instantly rewards the Memphis Grizzlies’ faith in his ability to fill in for the injured Jaren Jackson Jr. After showing isolated flashes as a rookie, the 21-year-old from Spain has clearly elevated his game in Year 2, putting himself in the perfect spot when a triple team envelops teammate Steven Adams. Aldama makes the New York Knicks pay for leaving him open, finishing the play with a one-handed slam, two of his 18 points to go with a career-high 11 rebounds in Memphis’ 115-112 overtime win on October 19, 2022.

Something about playing on the world’s biggest stage brings out the best in Josh Giddey. In his first two career games at Madison Square Garden, Giddey left the Big Apple with the same results — a triple-double and a win. The second-year guard’s quick corner release beats the halftime buzzer, one of 17 triples in 31 tries for the Oklahoma City Thunder against the New York Knicks. Giddey’s 24 points, 10 rebounds and 12 assists placed himself alongside special company — he and Wilt Chamberlain are the only two players to post triple-doubles in their first two games at MSG as the Thunder claimed a 145-135 win on November 13, 2022.

Even in Year 14, Wesley Matthews hasn’t lost his magic touch. The Milwaukee Bucks guard has always been a marksman from deep and has settled in as a dependable role player for a team with championship aspirations. Trailing by two with less than a minute remaining against the Philadelphia 76ers in Milwaukee’s 2022-23 opener, Matthews puts his clutch gene on display, burying a go-ahead triple with under 25 seconds remaining to silence the hostile Philly crowd. Matthews had eight points, five rebounds, two assists and a block in 20 minutes off the bench in the 90-88 win on October 20, 2022.

D’Angelo Russell has ice in his veins and an even colder handle. Down by two against the Utah Jazz with the fourth quarter clock ticking, the Minnesota Timberwolves guard takes matters into his own hands, putting the ball on the floor with his left hand before sending Mike Conley Jr. to the floor with a stop-and-pop, behind-the-back dribble. From there, all that’s left to do is force overtime, which Russell accomplishes with an open 14-footer with 4.4 seconds remaining. Russell racked up 23 points, five rebounds, seven assists and two steals in the October 21, 2022 overtime battle.

With the Rockets able to get behind most of the Detroit Pistons defense, Duren is the last line of defense and turns aside a potential thunderous slam with an emphatic rejection. In an exciting matchup between two of the NBA’s youngest teams, Duren held his own in a nine-point, five-rebound, two-steal effort on January 28, 2023.

When Yuta Watanabe gets the ball in his hands, he hesitates for a moment before deciding to pull up from deep himself. The fifth-year forward and first-year Net connected on 5-of-7 field goals off the bench — all from behind the arc — for 20 points, seven rebounds and two assists in the November 17, 2022 victory.

Jabari Smith Jr. had a rude welcome in store for one of his fellow rookies. The third overall selection in the draft runs the 2-on-1 fast break after Jae’Sean Tate comes up with a steal, gathering Tate’s bounce pass before finishing with a one-handed poster on fellow top-five pick Keegan Murray. Smith Jr.’s highlight-reel slam was part of an eight-point, nine-rebound performance on January 11, 2023.

Bench players unafraid to take clutch shots can separate good teams from special ones, and Chris Boucher shows no fear against the Dallas Mavericks with the game on the line. With his team clinging to a one-point lead late in the fourth quarter, the sixth-year reserve forward helps the Toronto Raptors out in a big way by draining a tough fadeaway from the paint over Reggie Bullock. It was a dagger that kept the game out of reach, as Boucher’s 22-point, 13-rebound effort was crucial in Toronto’s 105-100 triumph on November 26, 2022.

It appears that Damion Lee brought his clutch championship form with him to the desert. In his first game with the Phoenix Suns after a four-year run with the Golden State Warriors, Lee makes Suns fans elated that he’s on their side. Tied in the final seconds of a fourth-quarter battle, Lee takes a pass from three-time All-Star Devin Booker and makes his move, driving with determination toward the basket and draining a difficult game-winning fall-away jumper with 9.7 seconds left. Lee scored 11 points off the bench — all in the fourth quarter — to go with two rebounds and two assists in helping the Suns erase a 22-point third-quarter deficit to stun the Dallas Mavericks 107-105 on October 19, 2022.

Jordan Poole may or may not remember the Alamo, but he sure won’t forget his performance at the Alamodome anytime soon. Visiting the San Antonio Spurs at the iconic venue, Poole brings his best for a regular season record-crowd of 68,323 when he beats his defender with some slick between-the-legs dribbles and a nasty crossover before finishing with a high-arcing finger roll off the glass. The fourth-year guard lit up the Spurs for 25 points, three rebounds and six assists as the Golden State Warriors prevailed 144-113 in front of the largest crowd in NBA history on January 13, 2023.

Now that’s how you thread the needle. Alex Caruso doesn’t even give the defense an opportunity to set up, pushing the ball with purpose up the floor before dropping a bounce pass through the legs of a puzzled Deni Avdija to hit teammate Patrick Williams in stride for a one-handed slam. The Chicago Bulls guard kept the Washington Wizards off balance all night, tallying five points, four rebounds, nine assists and four steals in his team’s 115-111 triumph on December 7, 2022.

The New Orleans Pelicans reserve guard is a bundle of energy whenever he’s on the court, not to mention waiting for the offense to make a mistake that he can capitalize on. Following a made free throw by Zion Williamson, the Houston Rockets throw the ball in while expecting to begin the next possession. But Alvarado has other ideas, picking Kevin Porter Jr.’s pocket, ending up with a steal and layup in the blink of an eye. Alvarado gave a huge lift to the second unit, converting 5-of-6 field-goal attempts for 12 points, two rebounds, five assists and three steals in 20 minutes amidst a 119-106 victory on November 12, 2022.

Pascal Siakam and the Toronto Raptors were in need of a win, and the Portland Trail Blazers were left footing the bill. Siakam takes the ball from Fred VanVleet on the elbow and goes to work, posting up Josh Hart with some fancy footwork featuring a between-the-legs dribble and smooth spin move combo before finishing with a layup. After dropping three straight, Siakam helped his team get its first win of 2023 by posting a team-high 27 points along with four rebounds, six assists and two steals in the 117-105 triumph on January 8, 2023.

Make a huge play on defense and put the game away with a clutch triple — all in a day’s work for Donte DiVincenzo. With his Golden State Warriors clinging to a two-point lead in the final minute, DiVincenzo strips Damian Lillard before hustling back on offense to stay ready. He doesn’t have to wait long, as the fifth-year guard pulls up for a straightaway catch-and-shoot three to bury the hopes of the Portland Trail Blazers. Filling in admirably for an absent Steph Curry, DiVincenzo’s nine points, nine rebounds, four assists, four steals and one clutch three-pointer were the catalyst in his squad’s 118-112 win on December 30, 2022.

The Boston Celtics remember what happened the last time the Golden State Warriors came to town. And even with no championship trophy on the line this time, Al Horford was determined for a different outcome. Now in his 16th season, Horford more resembles a rookie with fresh legs as he gives chase and snuffs out Jordan Poole’s fast break opportunity with a perfectly-timed block. Horford’s 20 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks helped the Celtics get some payback for the 2021-22 NBA Finals in a thrilling 121-118 overtime win on January 19, 2023.

After playing 35 bruising minutes against the Los Angeles Lakers, Jerami Grant decided that he wasn’t interested in five more. Locked in a tie game on the road in the closing seconds of the fourth quarter, Grant shows no fear when confronted by LeBron James, aggressively driving straight at the Lakers’ star before getting the go-ahead bucket to fall with three seconds left. Grant’s clutch shot — as well as his 16 points, two rebounds and an assist — earned the Portland Trail Blazers their third straight win to open the season, a thrilling 106-104 victory on October 23, 2022.

Now on his fifth team in five seasons, Isaiah Hartenstein seems to be finding a home with the New York Knicks. Playing against the Boston Celtics, Hartenstein shows off his fundamentals, crashing the boards and turning a Jalen Brunson misfire into a one-handed put-back slam right on top of a helpless opponent. In a 38-minute run for Hartenstein, the big man made five of his six field goals for 10 points, while adding 14 rebounds, an assist and a block in the November 5, 2022 Atlantic Division showdown.

The return was emotional, but the performance was all business. Donovan Mitchell made his much-anticipated return to Salt Lake City as a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers and gave the Utah Jazz a nostalgic glimpse into the past. The four-time All-Star — three of those selections came in Mitchell’s five seasons in Utah — thanks the crowd and then shows no mercy, spinning his way into the paint before hitting his defender with a pump fake that gives Mitchell an opening to drop a finger roll into the bucket. Mitchell dropped 46 points, five rebounds, six assists, three steals and seven three-pointers on his old squad in the January 10, 2023 showdown.

No Giannis Antetokounmpo, Jrue Holiday or Khris Middleton for the Milwaukee Bucks? No problem for Jevon Carter.. The fifth-year guard known for his defensive prowess shows he can score the ball just as well against the Oklahoma City Thunder, pump faking a defender before putting the ball on the floor and going up strong against another challenger at the rim for a hard-earned layup. Carter doubled his previous season-high point total, erupting for a career-high 36 to go along with four rebounds, a career-best 12 assists and five three-pointers in Milwaukee’s marathon 136-132 double-overtime win on November 9, 2022.

It’s difficult to lose a basketball game when a guy on your team can’t miss. When his superstar teammate fails to convert a wide-open layup, Josh Green is there to provide a spark off the Dallas Mavericks’ bench. Following a rare point-blank miss from Luka Dončić, the Mavericks maintain possession thanks to a fortuitous deflection off the offensive glass. Aiming to take advantage of the second chance, Green breaks toward the basket and gets a perfect feed in stride from Maxi Kleber before throwing down a vicious two-handed slam. The third-year guard scored 16 points — on 5-for-5 from the field, 2-for-2 from behind the arc and 4-for-4 at the stripe — to pair with five rebounds and two assists in his squad’s 96-94 win over the Brooklyn Nets on November 7, 2022.
