Steph Curry never has been one to shy away from putting his legendary range on display. In a rematch of the 2022 NBA Finals against the Boston Celtics, a Golden State Warriors possession ended with a Curry turnover before the nine-time All-Star quickly redeemed himself by picking Jayson Tatum’s pocket on the counterattack. With the second quarter clock hurtling toward zero, Curry only had time to loft a prayer from beyond halfcourt that of course landed in the bottom of the net. Curry posted a team-high 29 points in the overtime battle while adding four rebounds, seven assists, three steals, two blocks and six 3-pointers on January 19, 2023.

LeBron James has been around long enough to play against fathers and sons, but make no mistake about it: the King is still operating at peak power. James took Jabari Smith Jr. to school 20 years after playing against Smith’s dad in his NBA debut, using a combination of style and strength to get the best of the 19-year-old rookie on a trip up the court before finishing with a thunderous throwdown. James shot 16 for 26 for 48 points — the 100th 40-point outing of his iconic career — and chipped in eight rebounds, nine assists and five 3-pointers in a 140-132 Los Angeles Lakers victory over the Houston Rockets on January 16, 2023.

Kevin Durant and the new-look Phoenix Suns kept winning as they hurtled toward a highly-anticipated postseason run. Back in town to face the Oklahoma City Thunder, Durant leveled his former team with a vintage fourth-quarter clutch performance on both ends of the court. When the Suns turned the ball over coming up the floor, it appeared Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had an uncontested dunk before Durant chased him down and blocked him from behind to preserve a seven-point fourth quarter Phoenix lead. Durant shot 13 for 21 for a team-high 35 points — 13 of which came in the fourth quarter — to go with five rebounds, five assists and two blocks as the Suns improved to 6-0 with Durant in the fold in the 128-118 win on April 2, 2023.

The Memphis Grizzlies tried repeatedly to bury the Philadelphia 76ers. A vintage James Harden shooting performance wouldn’t let them. Trailing by four late in the fourth quarter and needing a huge bucket from the 10-time All-Star, Harden drew the defense in on a drive into the lane before kicking it into the corner for Tobias Harris, who got cut off on a baseline drive. The ball made its way back to Harden in the same corner, and with little time and zero space to operate thanks to Desmond Bane’s strong defense, the veteran guard still knocked down the clutch shot with 1:24 to play. Harden scored a game-high 31 points on 10 of 16 shooting — 6 of 9 from deep — while adding seven rebounds and seven assists in the 110-105 victory on February 23, 2023, marking the fifth time the 76ers have won this season when trailing by 15 points.

Jaden Ivey started the play with finesse before ending it with a show of force. The Detroit Pistons rookie guard stayed light on his feet to gracefully save a loose ball from careening out of bounds before he fired a crosscourt missile to R.J. Hampton for an open 3-pointer. In the final home game of his inaugural NBA season, Ivey scored 23 points while grabbing five rebounds and dishing out a team-high 10 assists against the Brooklyn Nets on April 5, 2023.

Walker Kessler spent two weeks with the Minnesota Timberwolves but never played a game there. For one night, the Utah Jazz rookie showed Minnesota what it was missing. After acquiring Kessler on draft night following his selection by the Memphis Grizzlies with the 22nd pick, the Timberwolves traded him to Utah in exchange for Rudy Gobert. The 7-footer dominated Minnesota inside as he scratched and clawed his way to one of his nine offensive rebounds before scoring on a put-back. Kessler posted 20 points, 21 rebounds, four assists and two blocks in the 126-125 Utah win on January 16, 2023, becoming the first rookie since 2014 to register a 20-20 game.

Running the pick-and-roll with LeBron James sometimes appears so easy that it might as well be a cheat code. The 19-time All-Star shares the wealth at home against the Washington Wizards, bringing the ball across halfcourt before gaining access to the lane courtesy of a helpful screen. James baits the defense into focusing on him, but instead of taking the shot himself he drops off a smooth between-the-legs bounce pass to a cutting Thomas Bryant for a two-handed throwdown. James scored a game-high 33 points while adding seven rebounds and nine assists in the Los Angeles Lakers’ 119-117 victory on December 18, 2022.

Steph Curry’s shooting and scoring abilities get their just praise — but how about some love for the way the Golden State Warriors star gets his buckets? Granted an opportunity to strike from the corner, Curry sets his sight on the rim, splitting two defenders with a smooth behind-the-back maneuver, then finishes at the cup with a layup. The four-time champion scores two of his game-high 24 points on the play while also chipping in six rebounds, 10 assists, two steals and five triples in his squad’s 111-101 win on November 18, 2022.

On a nightly basis, Nikola Jokić makes the difficult look routine. The two-time reigning MVP has something special planned for the Houston Rockets, catching the ball in the post before burying a turnaround baseline jumper in rhythm on just one foot. The four-time All-Star tormented the Rockets all night, scoring 32 points on 11-of-17 shooting — his third time hitting 30 points in the past four games — while also grabbing 12 rebounds and dishing out eight assists in the Denver Nuggets’ 129-113 victory on November 28, 2022.

Trailing by three points with 1.3 seconds remaining in regulation, Matt Ryan was subbed into the game with one objective — tie the ballgame. Mission accomplished for the Los Angeles Lakers newcomer. Off a perfectly-executed inbound pass from Austin Reaves, the sharpshooting Ryan, in his Top Shot debut, has just enough time to set his feet and force overtime with a corner three-pointer directly in front of the Lakers’ bench. Ryan played a critical role for the Lakers in just his sixth career game, chipping in 11 points, two rebounds, an assist and three triples in a much-needed 120-117 win over the New Orleans Pelicans on November 2, 2022.

New season, same old Damian Lillard. The six-time All-Star is already in midseason form in the early stages of his 11th season with the Portland Trail Blazers, breaking the hearts of opposing teams thanks to his impeccably clutch shooting. Against the high-powered Phoenix Suns, Lillard does what he does best, using a dizzying array of dribbles as he hunts for his shot. Multiple defenders give chase to no avail, as Lillard unleashes a 20-footer with a high degree of difficulty that finds its home in the bottom of the net. It was the 41st time in Lillard’s career that he exploded for 40 or more in a game, extinguishing the Suns with 41 points, seven rebounds and three assists in Portland’s 113-111 overtime victory on October 21, 2022.

When you’re on the court with LeBron James as your teammate, it’s only a matter of time before opportunity knocks. Following a thunderous James rejection of Paul George, Austin Reaves scoops up the loose ball and motors the other way in transition before lobbing a flawless alley-oop pass to Lonnie Walker IV, who finishes the slam to get the home crowd on its feet. Reaves had an effective 22-minute run off the bench, posting four points, four rebounds and two assists in the Los Angeles Lakers’ intra-city rivalry game against the LA Clippers on October 20, 2022.

He’s so good that he doesn’t even need his eyes to make spectacular plays. Such is life when you’re Giannis Antetokounmpo, who continues to make the impossible happen on a nightly basis. Returning from a two-game absence against the Atlanta Hawks, the Milwaukee Bucks superstar makes up for lost time by flicking a no-look over-the-shoulder dime to a waiting Bobby Portis Jr., who finishes the possession with a layup. It was another typical night at the office for the two-time MVP, who finished the November 14, 2022 game with 27 points, eight rebounds and four assists.

Fresh off achieving a national championship in college, Christian Braun has brought an unselfish, winning style of basketball with him to the Denver Nuggets. Against the Utah Jazz, the rookie shows he’s willing to do whatever it takes to secure a victory, fearlessly stepping in front of Malik Beasley to turn a wide-open dunk into a ferocious rejection. Braun continued to make an impact off the Nuggets bench, chipping in 10 points, six rebounds, an assist and a block in Denver’s 117-101 triumph on October 28, 2022.

In just his sixth professional game, Mark Williams gave the Charlotte Hornets an exciting glimpse into their future. Making his Top Shot debut, the 15th overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft sends a Josh Giddey shot into the crowd with a merciless rejection at the rim. Williams shot a sparkling 7-for-7 for a career-high 17 points and 13 rebounds, along with two assists, two steals and two blocks in 21 productive minutes off the bench in his squad’s 121–113 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder on December 29, 2022.

Anthony Edwards makes magic happen at both ends for the Minnesota Timberwolves, first recording an unforgiving block on the Miami Heat’s Max Strus before quickly finding the ball back in his hands while leading the transition attack. The first-overall selection of the 2020 NBA Draft again comes face-to-face with Strus, breaking him down off the dribble atop the key before launching a shifty stepback triple that’s all net. Edwards posted 22 points, seven rebounds, four assists, four steals and four three-pointers in his squad’s 105-101 victory on November 21, 2022.

Charging straight into the lane against three San Antonio Spurs defenders is not for the faint of heart — but it is for Zion Williamson. The New Orleans Pelicans All-Star forward scoops up a bounce pass on the elbow and makes his move, putting the ball on the floor and muscling his way to a layup despite spinning his way into a traffic jam underneath the basket. Williamson poured in a season-high 32 points on 14-of-18 from the field to go along with 11 rebounds and two steals in his squad’s 129-110 win on November 23, 2022.

Donovan Mitchell’s honeymoon with the Cleveland Cavaliers continued against the Los Angeles Lakers. Taking advantage of a favorable one-on-one matchup with Austin Reaves, Mitchell hits his defender with some slick dribbles before suddenly pulling up for a stepback triple that helps the Cavs pull away late in the fourth quarter. Mitchell logged his second 40-point performance of the season, posting 43 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals in Cleveland’s 116-102 triumph on December 6, 2022.

Never underestimate James Harden’s ability to come up with creative new ways of making plays for his Philadelphia 76ers teammates. Back in Houston on the court he called home for parts of nine seasons, the 2018 MVP shifts into facilitator mode when he whips a low-to-the-ground bounce pass to a cutting Shake Milton, who finishes the possession with an easy layup. The 10-time All-Star managed 21 points, four rebounds, seven assists, two steals and four triples in Philly’s overtime battle against the Houston Rockets on December 5, 2022.

Sleep on Julius Randle’s outside game if you want but you might get burned. The New York Knicks forward shows the Minnesota Timberwolves that his perimeter game has the ability to deal serious damage, first putting his defender on skates before confidently sticking a step-back three-pointer. It was far from a fluke occurrence, as Randle connected on eight of his 13 attempts from beyond the arc, burying the Timberwolves with a game-high 31 points to go with eight rebounds and three assists in New York’s 120-107 road win on November 7, 2022.

One year after his breakout campaign, Jordan Poole continues to evolve offensively. Pressed into starting duty for a resting Klay Thompson, the fourth-year guard keeps the Golden State Warriors offense humming with a strong drive into the paint before dropping off a beauty of a behind-the-back no-look pass to a cutting Jonathan Kuminga. Poole’s 21 points, two rebounds, five assists and five three-pointers helped deliver the Warriors a 120-101 win over the Houston Rockets on December 3, 2022.

Scottie Barnes’ ability to impact a game on multiple fronts is what won him the NBA Rookie of the Year award. In Year 2, it’s clear that this is still very much the case. Competing against the Detroit Pistons, Barnes takes a pass in stride while driving into the lane, then drops off a slick one-handed bounce pass while airborne to a cutting Dalano Banton. Barnes’ eight points, five rebounds, four assists, one steal and one block made a major impact in Toronto’s 115-111 victory on November 14, 2022.

If you want to end up in the win column, don’t let Kyrie Irving and the Brooklyn Nets get hot. Looking for their fifth win in six games, the seven-time All-Star drives the ball up the floor with a head of steam, faking a pass to Joe Harris on the wing before dropping in a high-arcing floater over his defender’s fingertips. Irving’s game-high 33 points on 14 of 24 shooting — along with five rebounds, nine assists and four blocks — were too much for the Charlotte Hornets to handle as the Nets claimed a 122-116 victory on December 7, 2022.

The Golden State Warriors are happy to oblige as a vintage lights-out shooting performance from Thompson was just what they needed to snap an eight-game road losing skid to open the season. Against the Houston Rockets, the five-time All-Star grabs a pass from Steph Curry and lets it fly — one of his 10 made three-pointers in 13 attempts. Thompson exploded for a season-high 41 points on 14-for-23 shooting while adding four rebounds, three assists and two steals in Golden State’s 127-120 win on November 20, 2022.

Almost a quarter of the way into the 2022-23 season, one thing has become clear — if Jericho Sims is on the court, he’s probably going to dunk on you. The New York Knicks’ reserve center continues to be his squad’s resident alley-oop recipient, this time against the Utah Jazz as he gets teed up for a perfectly-executed lob from Immanuel Quickley. The second-year big man was strong in 25 productive minutes, making 5-of-7 field-goal attempts for 11 points, while adding 13 rebounds, two assists and a steal in the Knicks’ 118-111 road win on November 15, 2022.

In year 15, Russell Westbrook can still turn any pass on the court into an assist. The Detroit Pistons learned that the hard way as Westbrook — inbounding far away from the basket — needed less than two seconds to whip a three-quarter court laser into the hands of Lonnie Walker IV, who buries the catch-and-shoot triple to beat the halftime buzzer. Ten of Westbrook’s game-high 12 assists came in the first half, as the nine-time All-Star added 10 points and five rebounds in the Los Angeles Lakers’ 128-121 victory on November 18, 2022.

Jamal Murray looks like his old self again, which is bad news for the rest of the league. Against the Los Angeles Lakers, the Denver point guard uses a pick from Nikola Jokić to gain access into the lane. Met by a wall of defenders, Murray wisely passes up the shot attempt and instead opts for an acrobatic dish to his MVP teammate, who punctuates the possession with a floater. Murray produced 13 points, four rebounds, six assists and two steals in helping Denver prevail 110-99 on October 26, 2022.

Now that’s how you announce your presence to the rest of the league. A year after averaging just three points per game in less than eight minutes a night, Nick Richards has burst on to the scene for the Charlotte Hornets in the early stages of the 2022-23 season. After erupting for 19 points and 10 rebounds in the season opener, the reserve center one-ups himself against the Atlanta Hawks. Executing a flawless pick-and-roll with fellow reserve James Bouknight, Richards takes a bounce pass from his teammate and rises up for an emphatic one-handed slam. It was a perfect game for Richards, who made all nine of his field goal attempts in a 20-point, 11-rebound, two-block effort in 20 efficient minutes in Charlotte’s 126-109 win on October 23, 2022.

Eager to help out a Los Angeles Lakers team hungry for a victory early in the season, free agent acquisition Lonnie Walker IV knew just how to deliver. Getting out in space against the New Orleans Pelicans thanks to an outlet pass from LeBron James, Walker IV rewards the Lakers’ faith by taking flight and throwing down a vicious one-hand slam over Jose Alvarado. Walker IV deposited 28 points, grabbed three rebounds and buried five triples in his new team’s thrilling 120-117 overtime triumph on November 2, 2022.

After taking the G League by storm with his explosive scoring prowess, Jaden Hardy was ready for the big stage. The Dallas Mavericks rookie introduces himself to the New Orleans Pelicans in style, using his momentum to blow by Kira Lewis Jr. with his left hand into the lane before switching to his right and finishing with an up-and-under layup around Willy Hernangomez. Hardy matched his career-high with 15 points on 7 for 9 shooting while adding two steals in his squad’s 127-117 win on January 7, 2023.

The 2022-23 campaign has been a renaissance for the Sacramento Kings, with De’Aaron Fox now the king of the fourth quarter. Locked in a tight game at home against the Utah Jazz, the point guard blows by Collin Sexton before unleashing a merciless poster dunk over Kelly Olynyk despite giving up eight inches in the exchange. Fox scored at least 10 points in the fourth quarter for the fourth straight contest and, for the game, contributed 24 points, three rebounds and 10 assists in Sacramento’s December 30, 2022 win. It was the Kings’ 19th win of the year, a mark they didn’t reach until Feb. 2 the prior season.

New season, same results for Andrew Wiggins and the Golden State Warriors. Fresh off a transformative title run a season ago, Wiggins and company are back to defend the crown. Against an overmatched Sacramento Kings squad, the 2022 All-Star shows last year’s postseason run was no fluke, stepping into a passing lane and picking off a lazy pass. Wiggins is off to the races from there, finishing the fast break with a slam en route 24 points, five rebounds, three steals and two blocks in Golden State’s 130-125 victory on October 23, 2022.

Jaylen Brown did the prudent thing when confronted by one of the league’s preeminent shot blockers — he passed. The Boston Celtics’ two-time All-Star blows by his initial Brooklyn Nets defender on a baseline drive before a confrontation with Nic Claxton, whose eyes light up with hopes of a swat the moment Brown goes aerial beneath the basket. Instead of attempting the difficult reverse layup, Brown executes a perfectly-timed dump off to a cutting Robert Williams III for a two-handed slam. The Celtics ran circles around their Atlantic Division rivals, with Brown posting 26 points, three rebounds, three assists and seven three-pointers in 12 tries in Boston’s 139-96 victory on February 1, 2023.

The key to a 5-0 start to your season is making the smart play. Now in his 14th season, Jrue Holiday is a master of his craft, using a time-tested handle to gain access to the lane while drawing the Atlanta Hawks’ defense toward him. With three defenders now in the vicinity, the Milwaukee Bucks point guard dishes a last-minute dime to a wide open Brook Lopez for a corner three-pointer. Holiday’s 34 points, two rebounds, 12 assists and four steals kept his squad unbeaten in a 123-115 victory on October 29, 2022.

At this point, stopping DeMar DeRozan is borderline impossible — at best, you hope to contain him. The Boston Celtics, in this case, struggle to do either as the Chicago Bulls’ scoring machine plays one-on-five, getting himself to the basket with a dizzying array of dribbles, spins and crosses before finishing strong with a tough reverse layup. Boston ultimately got the win, but not before DeRozan torched the Celtics for a season-high 46 points on 13-for-23 from the field and 20-of-22 from the line to go with his three rebounds, five assists and two steals on November 4, 2022.

In just his second game back from an injury that caused him to miss all but nine games a year ago, Michael Porter Jr. has opened the 2022-23 season looking very much like his old self. Drawing one of the game’s toughest defensive assignments in Steph Curry, Porter Jr. doesn’t flinch, staying in lockstep with the four-time champion and two-time MVP on his path to the basket, swatting Curry’s shot with authority. Porter Jr. brought it on the offensive end too, contributing 17 points and six rebounds in the Denver Nuggets’ 128-123 road win at the defending champion Golden State Warriors on October 21, 2022.

Most players can go an entire career without scoring 50 points in a game — Joel Embiid did it twice in less than a month. After dropping 59 on the Utah Jazz on Nov. 13, Embiid hits the Charlotte Hornets with an encore performance as he trails James Harden up the court before collecting a behind-the-back pass from his All-Star teammate and rumbling down the lane for a strong two-handed slam. Embiid became the first player to score 50 points twice during the 2022-23 campaign as well as the third Philadelphia 76er to hit the mark multiple times in the same season after putting up 53 points, 12 rebounds and three assists in a 131-113 win on December 11, 2022.

Tyler Herro played 175 regular season games over his first three seasons without recording a triple-double. It took him but a dozen in Year 4 to finally check the milestone off his list. The Atlanta Hawks had no answers for the Miami Heat guard, who shows off his connection with teammate Bam Adebayo as he drives straight into the paint before lofting a high-arcing alley-oop pass that gets slammed home with authority. Herro recorded 11 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists, helping the Heat to a 106-98 victory on November 27, 2022.

Following a historic first quarter, there was no stopping LaMelo Ball and the Charlotte Hornets. Ball and his teammates were in perfect synergy all night, as he gathers a dump-off from Mason Plumlee before whipping a fabulous no-look pass back to the cutting center that ends in an easy deuce. The Hornets matched an NBA record with a staggering 51 first-quarter points, and Ball’s 24 points, three rebounds, 12 assists, two steals and seven three-pointers kept the Milwaukee Bucks chasing all night in Charlotte’s runaway 138-109 victory on January 6, 2023.

LaMelo Ball

Having started all but one game he’s played in over the past four seasons, O.G. Anunoby has become a steadying presence in the Toronto Raptors’ lineup. He can score efficiently and is a world-class defender. When Tobias Harris scoops up a steal and races the other way, Toronto’s sixth-year forward stays in lockstep with him the entire way, timing his jump flawlessly and mercilessly turning away the layup attempt. Anunoby was his usual productive self, contributing 19 points, nine rebounds, two assists, two steals and one emphatic block in the October 28, 2022 showdown.

O.G. Anunoby

The Utah Jazz didn’t learn their lesson the first time they tried to trespass in Deandre Ayton’s paint, so he was more than willing to remind them again. Mike Conley gains access to the lane with a pretty crossover move but fails to account for the Phoenix Suns’ center, who viciously denies the attempt. When the deflection falls into Conley’s hands again, he decides to give it another shot and is promptly denied. The Suns lost a heartbreaker, but Ayton pulled his weight with 17 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists and three blocks on November 18, 2022.

After a slow start to the 2022-23 season, the Orlando Magic turned to a fresh face with a unique basketball arsenal to help stop the bleeding. After three seasons with the Denver Nuggets where he was used sparingly, Bol Bol has been unleashed as an important part of the Magic’s present and future. Against the Charlotte Hornets, the spindly 7-foot-2 center catches a pass in the corner and puts the ball on the floor, exhibiting an impressive handle before letting his otherworldly frame do the rest as he launches himself toward the rim and throws down a ferocious slam. The Golden State Warriors forward displays both his elite distributing ability and court vision against the Cleveland Cavaliers, corralling a pass on the wing before immediately dropping off a no-look, behind-the-back dish to a trailing Klay Thompson in the same motion. As usual, Green was at the center of everything the Warriors do, posting two points, nine rebounds, 13 assists and a steal in the defending champions’ 106-101 victory on November 11, 2022.

Brook Lopez has no time for Houston Rockets guard Jalen Green’s drive to the hoop, literally ripping the ball out of Green’s hands in his attempt to score and needing only one arm to do so. The seven-footer did a little bit of everything for the Bucks — in addition to the five blocks, Lopez scored nine points, grabbed five rebounds, dished out two assists, grabbed two steals and sank a trio of three-pointers in Milwaukee’s runaway 125-105 victory.

The first overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft looks to be in his comfort zone with a strong drive to the basket against the Atlanta Hawks, finishing with an underhanded high-arcing scoop shot off the glass in traffic. Catching the flat-footed Miami Heat defense napping, the fifth-year shooting guard showcases his quick-shot ability from long range, pulling up from way downtown to bury one of his seven three-pointers of the ballgame. Huerter’s sizzling night from the field — 8-for-11 and 7-for-8 from deep — led to a team-high 27 points, along with three rebounds and seven assists in Sacramento’s 119-113 victory on October 29, 2022.

Against the Sacramento Kings, the seven-time All-Star enters total domination mode, taking a pass atop the key before stepping on the accelerator and hitting the defense with an unguardable spin move en route to two of his 40. The LA Clippers needed every one of them to get past the pesky Kings, as George’s 40 points, six rebounds, six assists and two steals were the difference in the 111-109 road win on October 22, 2022. The output made George the 14th active player to score 40 or more in a game at least 20 times.

Against the Oklahoma City Thunder, Jokić is confronted by a double team, forcing the gifted distributor to sling a cross-court bounce pass to Caldwell-Pope in the corner for a triple that would turn into a four-point play. The 10-year veteran was firing on all cylinders, posting 21 points, with six three-pointers, five rebounds and two assists in Denver’s 122-117 win on October 22, 2022.

Kicking off 2023 in style, Jackson Jr. protects the rim with vigor against the Sacramento Kings when he blocks a driving Malik Monk not once but twice. The Grizzlies’ talented fifth-year power forward made magic happen on both ends of the court, tallying 14 points, seven rebounds, two assists and three rejections in helping his squad win its third consecutive game, a 118-108 decision on January 1, 2023.

Ochai Agbaji relished the opportunity to show he can throw down with the best of them in his Top Shot debut. The Utah Jazz rookie guard gets a head start on the counterattack following a Memphis Grizzlies miss, receiving an outlet pass from Jordan Clarkson with only one defender standing between him and the basket. Agbaji doesn’t back down from the challenge, skying high and throwing down a highlight-reel jam. The 14th overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft is playing with extreme confidence, scoring 17 points on 7 of 12 shooting on February 15, 2023.

At just 20 years old and in his second professional season, Jalen Green is fast becoming one of the most dynamic inside-outside threats in the league. The Houston Rockets guard poured in a team-high 28 points to go along with two rebounds, nine assists and six three-pointers in his squad’s 118-105 victory on November 26, 2022.

With his shorthanded Toronto Raptors missing three key players against the Detroit Pistons, Banton took the opportunity to introduce himself. The second-year guard was a star on both ends, first creating a steal when he picks rookie Jaden Ivey’s pocket and then capping off the possessions with an emphatic slam on the other end. Banton exploded for a career-high 27 points while also chipping in four rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocks in Toronto’s gritty 115-111 triumph on November 14, 2022.

With the Golden State Warriors playing without Steph Curry and Klay Thompson, Patrick Baldwin Jr. paid homage to his Splash Brothers teammates. The rookie forward was called on for increased minutes for the shorthanded Warriors and delivered from downtown in his Top Shot debut, draining a catch-and-shoot triple off a dump off pass from Anthony Lamb. Eight of the 10 shots Baldwin Jr. attempted were from behind the arc, converting five of them for 17 points along with three rebounds against the Brooklyn Nets on December 21, 2022.

The Indiana Pacers All-Star point guard whips up some dazzling dribbles against the Utah Jazz, tricking Kelly Olynyk with a head fake so deceptive that Olynyk drifts several feet toward the basket and allows Haliburton to knock down a wide open three-point attempt. The highlight-reel maneuver was part of a 30-point, 12-assist, three-steal effort from Haliburton in the February 13, 2023 battle.

In the early stages of the 2022-23 season, Devin Vassell is making a case to be one of the league’s breakout players. Beginning his third season with the San Antonio Spurs, the 2020 lottery pick has improved in every facet of his game. Playing on the road against the star-powered Philadelphia 76ers, Vassell shows the opposition that he’s pretty good too, pushing the tempo in transition and somehow finding a way to convert an acrobatic running layup despite being surrounded by three Philly defenders. Few gave the Oklahoma City Thunder a chance against the NBA-leading Boston Celtics, especially with leading scorer Shai Gilgeous-Alexander unavailable. The third-year reserve guard has found his mojo with the Thunder, blowing by Blake Griffin before taking flight and throwing down the hammer over Payton Pritchard. The fifth-year pro matched his season-high with 35 points on top of five rebounds, two assists, three steals and four three-pointers in Toronto’s 113-104 victory on December 30, 2022.

Thomas Bryant proves to be adept at turning garbage into gold for the Los Angeles Lakers when a Dennis Schröder triple is off the mark, grabbing the offensive board through sheer force of will and depositing the put-back for a critical two points. Bryant was brilliant against the Sacramento Kings, tallying 29 points on 12 of 14 shooting to go with 14 rebounds in the Lakers’ nail-biting 136-134 victory on January 7, 2023.

When he’s feeling it from long range, Kevin Love is one of the most feared bench weapons in the NBA. The New York Knicks found that out the hard way, as the five-time All-Star takes a pass on the wing from Donovan Mitchell and buries a contested triple while drawing a foul. Love had a fourth quarter for the ages, connecting on five three-pointers and scoring 16 points as the Cleveland Cavaliers sank the visiting Knicks by out-scoring them by 22 points in the period. All told, Love scored 29 points in just 22 minutes on 8-for-13 from long range while adding eight rebounds in the 121-108 triumph on October 30, 2022.

After being waived by the Philadelphia 76ers a couple of days before the start of the season, Charles Bassey quickly found himself a new home with the San Antonio Spurs. It hasn’t taken long for the second-year reserve center to leave a lasting impression, as he shows off his hustle and defensive aptitude by chasing down George Hill of the Milwaukee Bucks and emphatically spiking his shot attempt into the hardwood. Bassey got busy in just 18 minutes, producing five points, 14 rebounds, four assists and four blocks in San Antonio’s impressive 111-93 win on November 11, 2022.

Murphy III made all eight of his field-goal attempts — including four triples — as well as both free throws en route to 22 points and five rebounds in his squad’s exciting 113-111 win on October 25, 2022.

The Philadelphia 76ers point guard inbounded the basketball to Embiid, who decided he wanted to fire from long range as he took two dribbles backward and nailed one of Harden’s patented step-back 3-pointers. In another monster season for Embiid, the six-time All-Star overwhelmed the Brooklyn Nets with 37 points on 12 of 18 shooting and added 13 rebounds, two assists and two steals in the 101-98 victory on February 11, 2023. 

With helpful teammates, Quentin Grimes’ job is simple — catch, shoot, make, repeat. The New York Knicks’ second-year guard stays ready and alert as Jalen Brunson twists and turns his way into lane before spotting him for a kickout three. After his successful triple, Grimes’ stingy defense changes the trajectory of Trae Young’s shot before Grimes is again rewarded for his efforts — this time by Julius Randle, who draws the Atlanta Hawks’ defense into the paint before passing out to him all alone. The back-to-back triples were two of five made attempts by Grimes, who finished with 23 points, four rebounds, two assists and two blocks in New York’s 113-89 win on December 7, 2022.

As long as it goes in it doesn’t matter how you got there. Locked in a tight battle against the Memphis Grizzlies, Marcus Smart drives into the lane before coming head-to-head with Santi Aldama. Smart absorbs a body blow that sends him toppling to the hardwood and on the way down flicks up a desperation shot that somehow finds the bottom of the net. The underrated Boston Celtics point guard produced a solid all-around game with 15 points, seven rebounds and 12 assists in his team’s hard-fought 109-106 victory on November 7, 2022.

In the first start of his NBA career, Santi Aldama instantly rewards the Memphis Grizzlies’ faith in his ability to fill in for the injured Jaren Jackson Jr. After showing isolated flashes as a rookie, the 21-year-old from Spain has clearly elevated his game in Year 2, putting himself in the perfect spot when a triple team envelops teammate Steven Adams. Aldama makes the New York Knicks pay for leaving him open, finishing the play with a one-handed slam, two of his 18 points to go with a career-high 11 rebounds in Memphis’ 115-112 overtime win on October 19, 2022.

Herbert Jones continues to make a major impact for the New Orleans Pelicans, first picking Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s pocket, then deftly avoiding the oldest trick in the book while Gilgeous-Alexander attempts to knock the ball off of him as he falls out of bounds. The second-year forward says not so fast, thwarting the guard’s attempt with sure hands, allowing the Pelicans to keep the ball in their possession. Jones brought energy on both ends, tallying 12 points, three rebounds, three assists, four steals and three blocks in his team’s 105-101 victory on November 28, 2022.

The Washington Wizards thought they had a driving layup attempt in the bag — only Aaron Gordon had other ideas. Deni Avdija looks like he has a clear path to the rim against the Denver Nuggets, that is until Gordon springs from behind to deny the attempt with a clean block off the glass. The Denver forward played with swagger on both ends of the court, producing 22 points, seven rebounds and three assists in his squad’s 141-128 victory on December 14, 2022.

After a midseason trade brought him from the Phoenix Suns to the Indiana Pacers in Feb. 2022, Jalen Smith’s scoring average more than doubled, jumping from six per game to better than 13 in 22 games. With the 2022-23 season underway, Smith is here to say there’s plenty more where that came from. Detroit Pistons rookie Jaden Ivey receives a rude awakening when he attempts to put Smith on a poster, as the Pacers big man denies Ivey with a ferocious block at the rim. Smith produced a dominant performance — 19 points, 15 rebounds and three blocks to help Indiana win its first game of the season, a 124-115 triumph on October 22, 2022.

It was a dagger that kept the game out of reach, as Boucher’s 22-point, 13-rebound effort was crucial in Toronto’s 105-100 triumph on November 26, 2022.

Langford scored a career-best 19 points to go with six rebounds, a steal and a block in the Spurs’ 115-111 road victory over the Miami Heat on December 10, 2022.

Down by two against the Utah Jazz with the fourth quarter clock ticking, the Minnesota Timberwolves guard takes matters into his own hands, putting the ball on the floor with his left hand before sending Mike Conley Jr. to the floor with a stop-and-pop, behind-the-back dribble. From there, all that’s left to do is force overtime, which Russell accomplishes with an open 14-footer with 4.4 seconds remaining. Allen’s 18 points and 16 rebounds were critical in allowing the Cavs to win for the third time in four games to open the season, a 103-92 home victory on October 26, 2022.

Against the Chicago Bulls, the Spurs center has the ball on the baseline and decides to fire a cross-court pass to a teammate in the other corner… only the laser pass connects with the rim first, taking a fortuitous bounce right back into the hands of Poeltl, who scoops up the ball and throws down a reverse slam before his defender even knows what happened. Even in Year 14, Wesley Matthews hasn’t lost his magic touch. The Milwaukee Bucks guard has always been a marksman from deep and has settled in as a dependable role player for a team with championship aspirations. Trailing by two with less than a minute remaining against the Philadelphia 76ers in Milwaukee’s 2022-23 opener, Matthews puts his clutch gene on display, burying a go-ahead triple with under 25 seconds remaining to silence the hostile Philly crowd. Matthews had eight points, five rebounds, two assists and a block in 20 minutes off the bench in the 90-88 win on October 20, 2022.

The seventh-year pro rises up for a step-back three-pointer to give his squad a one-point lead. LeVert had one of the best games of his career to help the Cleveland Cavaliers erase a 15-point deficit, exploding for 41 points along with four rebounds, seven assists, three steals and six three-pointers in the 132-123 overtime win on October 28, 2022.

For one night, the Los Angeles Lakers’ bench outscored the starting lineup. Austin Reaves had a little something to do with that. Reaves had the best performance of his two-year career against the Orlando Magic, dribbling and spinning his way into the lane before connecting on a fadeaway from the elbow over Markelle Fultz. The undrafted Reaves poured in a career-best 35 points — 9 of 14 from the field and 16 of 18 at the foul line — to go with six rebounds and six assists in a 30-minute run off the bench as the Lakers defeated the Magic 111-105 on March 19, 2023. 

Mitchell Robinson hosted a late-October block party at Madison Square Garden, and all of the Charlotte Hornets were cordially invited. Charlotte’s Jalen McDaniels decides to take a run at Robinson, driving hard to the basket only to be met at the rim by the New York Knicks center, who rejects the basketball with such force that it careens into the front row. A fired up Mitchell made all four of his field goal attempts for nine points, eight rebounds, six blocks and an assist, helping the Knicks outlast the Hornets 134-131 in the October 26, 2022 overtime battle.

In his first game with the Phoenix Suns after a four-year run with the Golden State Warriors, Lee makes Suns fans elated that he’s on their side. Tied in the final seconds of a fourth-quarter battle, Lee takes a pass from three-time All-Star Devin Booker and makes his move, driving with determination toward the basket and draining a difficult game-winning fall-away jumper with 9.7 seconds left. Lee scored 11 points off the bench — all in the fourth quarter — to go with two rebounds and two assists in helping the Suns erase a 22-point third-quarter deficit to stun the Dallas Mavericks 107-105 on October 19, 2022.

With his Golden State Warriors clinging to a two-point lead in the final minute, DiVincenzo strips Damian Lillard before hustling back on offense to stay ready. He doesn’t have to wait long, as the fifth-year guard pulls up for a straightaway catch-and-shoot three to bury the hopes of the Portland Trail Blazers. Filling in admirably for an absent Steph Curry, DiVincenzo’s nine points, nine rebounds, four assists, four steals and one clutch three-pointer were the catalyst in his squad’s 118-112 win on December 30, 2022.

After arriving in a trade the previous season, Kristaps Porziņģis played just 17 games with the Washington Wizards, showing that unique blend of talent that made him the fourth pick of the 2015 draft. Porziņģis is clearly having fun in his first full season in D.C., taking a pass well behind the three-point arc preparing to unleash his magic. The big man makes a Chicago Bulls defender look absolutely foolish, first with a pump fake, then with an ankle-breaking crossover and long-range triple. Porziņģis tallied 14 points, three rebounds, two assists, two blocks and a steal in Washington’s 102-100 triumph on October 21, 2022.

Whether he’s facilitating for his Charlotte Hornets teammates or creating the offense himself, LaMelo Ball is a dynamic playmaker with the ball in his hands. The 2022 All-Star continued turning heads against the Boston Celtics in his third season as he unleashed a slippery spin move that Sam Hauser couldn’t keep up with before finishing the possession with a step-back 3-pointer. Ball tallied 24 points and came up just short of a triple-double by adding nine rebounds and 10 assists in the February 10, 2023 Eastern Conference showdown.

There wasn’t much time to get off a 3-pointer to beat the first quarter buzzer. Good thing Damian Lillard needed next to none. With Shaedon Sharpe inbounding for the Portland Trail Blazers with 1.1 seconds on the clock, Lillard corralled the pass at the logo and in the same motion fired a 40-footer that was all net as time expired. The seven-time All-Star converted eight treys — all in the first half — as Portland raced to a 19-point halftime lead, and for the game Lillard posted 40 points, six rebounds and five assists in a 127-115 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on February 13, 2023. 

When confident shooters keep firing, the results inevitably follow. Continuing to make progress as an offensive player in the third year of his career, Killian Hayes steps up for the Detroit Pistons, coming up clutch in overtime against the Dallas Mavericks. After breaking a tie with a triple on the preceding possession, the seventh-overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft does it again and puts the game out of reach by burying a step-back dagger with 41.6 seconds remaining. The third-year pro connected on 10 of his 13 shots in the game, scoring eight of his 22 points in overtime while also adding four rebounds and eight assists in Detroit’s 131-125 win on December 1, 2022.
