Although tempting to fire up a shot in your first NBA minutes, Dyson Daniels instead opts for the more unselfish route. When Memphis Grizzlies rookie Kennedy Chandler gets his pocket picked by McKinley Wright IV bringing the ball up the floor, he sets out for revenge. Rather than concede a fastbreak layup to the Dallas Mavericks, the 38th overall pick in the draft turns on the jets, chasing Wright IV down and blocking his shot not once but twice. The Mavericks won big, but Chandler’s defensive tenacity was a bright spot for Memphis as he added two assists to his two rejections in his first nine minutes of action on October 22, 2022.

Taking advantage of a favorable one-on-one matchup with Austin Reaves, Mitchell hits his defender with some slick dribbles before suddenly pulling up for a stepback triple that helps the Cavs pull away late in the fourth quarter. Mitchell logged his second 40-point performance of the season, posting 43 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals in Cleveland’s 116-102 triumph on December 6, 2022.

Never underestimate James Harden’s ability to come up with creative new ways of making plays for his Philadelphia 76ers teammates. Back in Houston on the court he called home for parts of nine seasons, the 2018 MVP shifts into facilitator mode when he whips a low-to-the-ground bounce pass to a cutting Shake Milton, who finishes the possession with an easy layup. The 10-time All-Star managed 21 points, four rebounds, seven assists, two steals and four triples in Philly’s overtime battle against the Houston Rockets on December 5, 2022.

One year after his breakout campaign, Jordan Poole continues to evolve offensively. Pressed into starting duty for a resting Klay Thompson, the fourth-year guard keeps the Golden State Warriors offense humming with a strong drive into the paint before dropping off a beauty of a behind-the-back no-look pass to a cutting Jonathan Kuminga. Poole’s 21 points, two rebounds, five assists and five three-pointers helped deliver the Warriors a 120-101 win over the Houston Rockets on December 3, 2022.

Drawing one of the game’s toughest defensive assignments in Steph Curry, Porter Jr. doesn’t flinch, staying in lockstep with the four-time champion and two-time MVP on his path to the basket, swatting Curry’s shot with authority. Porter Jr. brought it on the offensive end too, contributing 17 points and six rebounds in the Denver Nuggets’ 128-123 road win at the defending champion Golden State Warriors on October 21, 2022.

Kicking off 2023 in style, Jackson Jr. protects the rim with vigor against the Sacramento Kings when he blocks a driving Malik Monk not once but twice. The Grizzlies’ talented fifth-year power forward made magic happen on both ends of the court, tallying 14 points, seven rebounds, two assists and three rejections in helping his squad win its third consecutive game, a 118-108 decision on January 1, 2023.

It’s safe to say that Kentavious Caldwell-Pope is enjoying his new surroundings in the Mile High City. It’s not difficult to understand why, given Caldwell-Pope is now playing with the Denver Nuggets and two-time MVP Nikola Jokić. Against the Oklahoma City Thunder, Jokić is confronted by a double team, forcing the gifted distributor to sling a cross-court bounce pass to Caldwell-Pope in the corner for a triple that would turn into a four-point play. The 10-year veteran was firing on all cylinders, posting 21 points, with six three-pointers, five rebounds and two assists in Denver’s 122-117 win on October 22, 2022.

If you didn’t know Dalano Banton’s name before, you sure do now. With his shorthanded Toronto Raptors missing three key players against the Detroit Pistons, Banton took the opportunity to introduce himself. The second-year guard was a star on both ends, first creating a steal when he picks rookie Jaden Ivey’s pocket and then capping off the possessions with an emphatic slam on the other end. Banton exploded for a career-high 27 points while also chipping in four rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocks in Toronto’s gritty 115-111 triumph on November 14, 2022.

Few gave the Oklahoma City Thunder a chance against the NBA-leading Boston Celtics, especially with leading scorer Shai Gilgeous-Alexander unavailable. But the Thunder still had Isaiah Joe, and he contributed to one of the best offensive nights in franchise history. The third-year reserve guard has found his mojo with the Thunder, blowing by Blake Griffin before taking flight and throwing down the hammer over Payton Pritchard. Joe tallied 21 points on 8 of 13 shooting off the bench to pair with four rebounds and four assists in the Thunder’s 150-117 regulation win on January 3, 2023.

After being waived by the Philadelphia 76ers a couple of days before the start of the season, Charles Bassey quickly found himself a new home with the San Antonio Spurs. It hasn’t taken long for the second-year reserve center to leave a lasting impression, as he shows off his hustle and defensive aptitude by chasing down George Hill of the Milwaukee Bucks and emphatically spiking his shot attempt into the hardwood. Bassey got busy in just 18 minutes, producing five points, 14 rebounds, four assists and four blocks in San Antonio’s impressive 111-93 win on November 11, 2022.

Smart absorbs a body blow that sends him toppling to the hardwood and on the way down flicks up a desperation shot that somehow finds the bottom of the net. The underrated Boston Celtics point guard produced a solid all-around game with 15 points, seven rebounds and 12 assists in his team’s hard-fought 109-106 victory on November 7, 2022.

After a midseason trade brought him from the Phoenix Suns to the Indiana Pacers in Feb. 2022, Jalen Smith’s scoring average more than doubled, jumping from six per game to better than 13 in 22 games. With the 2022-23 season underway, Smith is here to say there’s plenty more where that came from. Detroit Pistons rookie Jaden Ivey receives a rude awakening when he attempts to put Smith on a poster, as the Pacers big man denies Ivey with a ferocious block at the rim. Smith produced a dominant performance — 19 points, 15 rebounds and three blocks to help Indiana win its first game of the season, a 124-115 triumph on October 22, 2022.

Alex Caruso doesn’t even give the defense an opportunity to set up, pushing the ball with purpose up the floor before dropping a bounce pass through the legs of a puzzled Deni Avdija to hit teammate Patrick Williams in stride for a one-handed slam. The Chicago Bulls guard kept the Washington Wizards off balance all night, tallying five points, four rebounds, nine assists and four steals in his team’s 115-111 triumph on December 7, 2022.

Mitchell Robinson hosted a late-October block party at Madison Square Garden, and all of the Charlotte Hornets were cordially invited. Charlotte’s Jalen McDaniels decides to take a run at Robinson, driving hard to the basket only to be met at the rim by the New York Knicks center, who rejects the basketball with such force that it careens into the front row. A fired up Mitchell made all four of his field goal attempts for nine points, eight rebounds, six blocks and an assist, helping the Knicks outlast the Hornets 134-131 in the October 26, 2022 overtime battle.

Sometimes it pays to shoot first and ask questions later . Following a steal on the defensive end, the Brooklyn Nets push the counterattack against the Portland Trail Blazers. When Yuta Watanabe gets the ball in his hands, he hesitates for a moment before deciding to pull up from deep himself. The fifth-year forward and first-year Net connected on 5-of-7 field goals off the bench — all from behind the arc — for 20 points, seven rebounds and two assists in the November 17, 2022 victory.

Make a huge play on defense and put the game away with a clutch triple — all in a day’s work for Donte DiVincenzo. With his Golden State Warriors clinging to a two-point lead in the final minute, DiVincenzo strips Damian Lillard before hustling back on offense to stay ready. He doesn’t have to wait long, as the fifth-year guard pulls up for a straightaway catch-and-shoot three to bury the hopes of the Portland Trail Blazers. Filling in admirably for an absent Steph Curry, DiVincenzo’s nine points, nine rebounds, four assists, four steals and one clutch three-pointer were the catalyst in his squad’s 118-112 win on December 30, 2022.

After arriving via trade in Jan. 2022, a shoulder injury cut Cam Reddish’s run with the New York Knicks short after just 15 games. Now that he’s healthy again, the rest of the league better watch out. Against the Memphis Grizzlies in New York’s first game of the 2022-23 season, Reddish wastes little time reintroducing himself to the basketball world, drifting into the corner to catch a pass from Jalen Brunson and sinking a contested three-pointer with three seconds left in regulation to force overtime. Although the Knicks lost the game, the Big Apple was surely buzzing after Reddish put up 22 points, five rebounds, three steals and a block on 9-of-15 shooting off the bench in the October 19, 2022 battle.

Now on his fifth team in five seasons, Isaiah Hartenstein seems to be finding a home with the New York Knicks. Playing against the Boston Celtics, Hartenstein shows off his fundamentals, crashing the boards and turning a Jalen Brunson misfire into a one-handed put-back slam right on top of a helpless opponent. In a 38-minute run for Hartenstein, the big man made five of his six field goals for 10 points, while adding 14 rebounds, an assist and a block in the November 5, 2022 Atlantic Division showdown.

No inbound is a given when Jose Alvarado is on the prowl. The New Orleans Pelicans reserve guard is a bundle of energy whenever he’s on the court, not to mention waiting for the offense to make a mistake that he can capitalize on. Following a made free throw by Zion Williamson, the Houston Rockets throw the ball in while expecting to begin the next possession. But Alvarado has other ideas, picking Kevin Porter Jr.’s pocket, ending up with a steal and layup in the blink of an eye. Alvarado gave a huge lift to the second unit, converting 5-of-6 field-goal attempts for 12 points, two rebounds, five assists and three steals in 20 minutes amidst a 119-106 victory on November 12, 2022.

No Giannis Antetokounmpo, Jrue Holiday or Khris Middleton for the Milwaukee Bucks? No problem for Jevon Carter.. The fifth-year guard known for his defensive prowess shows he can score the ball just as well against the Oklahoma City Thunder, pump faking a defender before putting the ball on the floor and going up strong against another challenger at the rim for a hard-earned layup. Carter doubled his previous season-high point total, erupting for a career-high 36 to go along with four rebounds, a career-best 12 assists and five three-pointers in Milwaukee’s marathon 136-132 double-overtime win on November 9, 2022.

After giving the Chicago Bulls a one-point advantage in the final minutes of a close contest, Nikola Vučević was far from finished. The two-time All-Star hustles back on defense against the Washington Wizards and registers a clutch block on a layup attempt by a driving Monte Morris to preserve the lead. The Bulls would never trail again thanks to huge performances on both ends by the veteran center, who posted 25 points, 11 rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks in Chicago’s 115-111 win on December 7, 2022.

After playing 35 bruising minutes against the Los Angeles Lakers, Jerami Grant decided that he wasn’t interested in five more. Locked in a tie game on the road in the closing seconds of the fourth quarter, Grant shows no fear when confronted by LeBron James, aggressively driving straight at the Lakers’ star before getting the go-ahead bucket to fall with three seconds left. Grant’s clutch shot — as well as his 16 points, two rebounds and an assist — earned the Portland Trail Blazers their third straight win to open the season, a thrilling 106-104 victory on October 23, 2022.

A major reason for the Miami Heat’s successful run over the past two decades is its ability to find critical depth pieces to support the team’s stars. Caleb Martin is among the latest examples, as the fourth-year undrafted forward steps up in a big way against the Atlanta Hawks. Supporting the Heat without Jimmy Butler, Martin brings toughness and grit to the floor as he drifts over as a help defender to deny Onyeka Okongwu with a block from behind. Martin brought it on both ends, scoring 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting while adding nine rebounds, four assists and two steals in Miami’s 106-98 come-from-behind win on November 27, 2022.

The Miami Heat were playing without their top three scorers — but they still had Kyle Lowry on their side. With only seven healthy players against the Washington Wizards, the Heat needed their veteran point guard to empty the tank and he was happy to oblige. The six-time All-Star drives with determination into the lane, sidesteps a couple of defenders then rises up on the baseline to drain a 19-footer over the much taller Kristaps Porziņģis. Though they’d ultimately come up short, Lowry’s 24 points, 10 rebounds, 15 assists, two blocks and a steal kept the Heat in the fight on November 18, 2022.

Now a spark plug off the bench for the Chicago Bulls, Dragić shows off his basketball IQ by catching the Charlotte Hornets’ defense napping. While preparing an inbound pass on the baseline, an observant Dragić notices Dennis Smith Jr. looking the other way, bounces the ball off his back and lays it off the glass for an easy deuce. The heads up play yielded two of Dragić’s 16 points — along with three rebounds, three assists and a block — in just 15 minutes as the Bulls prevailed 106-88 on November 2, 2022.

It was a classic night beyond the arc for Curry, who connected on 11-of-15 field goals – and 7-of-10 from downtown – for 29 points in 29 minutes of action in Brooklyn’s 111-97 victory on November 27, 2022.

With his struggling Philadelphia 76ers off to a slow start to their season, the reserve forward does what he does best to aid his team’s quest for victory — bomb it from deep. The scorching Niang lit up the visiting Phoenix Suns for seven three-pointers in 10 tries, including this open spot up triple from the left wing that brought the home crowd to its feet. Niang’s 21 points in 27 minutes — along with four rebounds, an assist and two steals were vital in delivering the 76ers a much-needed 100-88 victory on November 7, 2022.

After two full seasons with the Minnesota Timberwolves, Jarred Vanderbilt didn’t have to wait long to exact his revenge — now a member of the Utah Jazz, Vanderbilt and his new squad were in Minnesota for the second game of the 2022-23 season. With Mike Conley Jr. pushing the tempo in transition, Vanderbilt bides his time, drifting all alone into the paint in the perfect spot to throw down an open slam off an unselfish dish from his veteran point guard. The final two points of the game were an exclamation point for Vanderbilt, who posted four points, 14 rebounds, four assists and four steals in the thrilling 132-126 win on October 21, 2022.

Ever since his college days, Grayson Allen has never been shy about taking a big shot with the game on the line. Now in his second season with the Milwaukee Bucks, the fifth-year pro shows not much has changed as he uses a Brook Lopez screen to create just enough space to fire off a go-ahead triple with 30.1 seconds remaining. Considering star teammate Giannis Antetokounmpo had previously fouled out, Allen stepped up in a big way to record 11 points, five rebounds and four assists in Milwaukee’s thrilling 109-103 triumph over the New York Knicks on November 30, 2022.

Grayson Allen

Good things come to those who wait. Dwight Powell had played only seven minutes in the first four games of the 2022-23 Dallas Mavericks season before he was tabbed to start the fifth against the Oklahoma City Thunder. Powell made the most of his opportunity, playing pick-and-roll with Luka Dončić and soaring into the air to catch and slam an underhanded alley-oop flick pass from his superstar teammate. Powell scored 13 points in 18 minutes while also grabbing two rebounds in the October 29, 2022 contest.

With a tenuous grip on a one-point lead and the clock dwindling, it was Austin Rivers’ dagger to fire. Game, set, match. When Anthony Edwards finds Rivers with a cross-court pass, the 11-year veteran has few options left but to let it fly. After a few seconds to gather his courage, Rivers rises up over Eugene Omoruyi and nails the back-breaking triple to give the Minnesota Timberwolves a four-point lead they would not surrender. Rivers was huge for his squad, posting 20 points on 6 of 7 shooting — including 4 of 5 from downtown — adding three rebounds and five steals in the 112-110 win on December 16, 2022.

In the midst of a memorable Sacramento Kings season, Terence Davis and company had something special planned when Kevin Durant and the Brooklyn Nets came to town. The fourth-year guard does his part picking off a lazy pass and racing the other way all by himself for a rim-rocking jam. In 26 minutes off the bench, Davis ignited for 31 points — 12-for-16 from the field and 7 of 10 from long range — nine rebounds, four assists and three steals in the Kings’ 153-121 blowout win on November 15, 2022. It was the highest-scoring point total for Sacramento in almost 30 years, as well as the Kings’ seventh win in nine games following an 0-4 start.

Trailing by 17 points in the third quarter against the LA Clippers, things looked bleak for the Orlando Magic. But Moritz Wagner was not interested in defeat, helping his team erase a nine-game losing streak by setting a decoy screen and propelling toward the basket before finishing with a monster throwdown over Ivica Zubac. On his fourth team in five seasons, Wagner has found a home in Orlando and helped deliver a much-needed win posting 20 points, 13 rebounds, three assists and two steals in a 116-111 overtime triumph on December 7, 2022.

Role players unafraid to deliver in the clutch are the difference between good teams and great ones. Norman Powell shows his squad that no moment is too big as the LA Clippers find themselves trailing by two in the guts of the game. After an in-transition Reggie Jackson finds Powell behind the arc, the eighth-year reserve forward shifts into attack mode, driving head on into the lane against the heart of the Cleveland Cavaliers defense and navigating all challengers. Powell draws the foul while converting the underhand layup, tying the game with 1:03 remaining. Powell’s 17 points and two steals were instrumental in the 119-117 victory on November 7, 2022.

As the only starter available for a shorthanded Oklahoma City Thunder squad, Luguentz Dort answered the bell. Dort asserts himself against the Memphis Grizzlies, taking it right to Brandon Clarke before hitting his defender with a spin move and stepback jumper. Dort was money when his team needed him most, pouring in a team-high 24 points to pair with seven rebounds and four assists in a 115-109 win on December 17, 2022. 

Luguentz Dort

If at first you don’t succeed, try again. Cameron Payne doesn’t let a missed three-pointer get him down against the Orlando Magic as he stays engaged in the play and gets another chance to score thanks to a helpful offensive rebound by a teammate. The Phoenix Suns guard instantly finds the ball in his hands again and instead of trying another shot from downtown, he blows right by Wendell Carter Jr. with ankle-breaking quickness en route to an easy layup. Though the Magic won the game, Payne came up big with a team-high 22 points to go with three rebounds, four assists and five triples on November 11, 2022.

No Karl-Anthony Towns or Rudy Gobert? No problem for the Minnesota Timberwolves — enter Naz Reid. The fourth-year center steps into starting duty and does not miss a beat, eschewing any help from his teammates in favor of taking the ball to the rack himself for a thunderous one-handed slam. Reid scored 27 points on 11 of 19 shooting while adding 13 rebounds and two steals in Minnesota’s 116-106 triumph on December 19, 2022.

Energy off the bench is an immeasurable intangible, but the Cleveland Cavaliers have it in bunches. It was Cedi Osman’s turn to show it off against the Miami Heat. The sixth-year forward exhibits pure hustle, first coming up with a steal on the defensive end before pushing the counterattack at a frenetic pace and whipping a perfect bounce pass to Darius Garland for a transition layup. Osman produced 20 points, 12 rebounds, three assists and four three-pointers in Cleveland’s 113-87 victory on November 20, 2022.

Drew Eubanks did what few NBA players are able to accomplish — get the best of Rudy Gobert in the paint. Thanks to a helpful assist from Damian Lillard, the Portland Trail Blazers reserve forward catches it on the block and soars high into the air for a ferocious dunk over the three-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year. Eubanks made all five of his shots for 10 points while also adding an assist and a block in 20 minutes off the bench in Portland’s 124-118 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on December 10, 2022.

Off to their most promising start in over a decade, the Sacramento Kings are getting big production out of a litany of difference makers. Against the Indiana Pacers it was Harrison Barnes’ turn, as the veteran forward catches a pass from Domantas Sabonis in the paint and goes right up for a difficult up-and-under reverse layup between two defenders. The win was Sacramento’s eighth in 11 games, and their 11-9 start is the franchise’s best since the 2004-05 season. Barnes played a big role, scoring 22 points to pair with five rebounds, two assists and two steals in the 137-114 win on November 30, 2022.

No LaMelo Ball? No problem for Terry Rozier and the upstart Charlotte Hornets. Opening the 2022-23 campaign without their injured All-Star point guard, Rozier picked up the slack and then some against the San Antonio Spurs. Pushing the ball up the court, the eighth-year guard dribbles and spins to such a dizzying degree that he puts a Spurs defender on the ground before finishing the possession with a kiss off the glass. The Hornets set franchise records in a season opener for points in an opening half with Rozier at the center of it all. Rozier finished with 24 points, six rebounds and six assists in Charlotte’s runaway 129-102 victory on October 19, 2022.

It had been two seasons since the Sacramento Kings had won five consecutive games, so Trey Lyles made sure to bring something special for the occasion. The eighth-year reserve forward gives an immediate lift to the Kings’ second unit, pumpfaking his defender on the perimeter before driving hard toward the rim and finishing with a powerful one-handed slam over Charles Bassey. Lyles’ 14 points were part of a 58-point explosion from the bench, and he also added three rebounds and a steal in 20 strong minutes to help the Kings prevail 130-112 over the San Antonio Spurs on November 17, 2022.

The best way to stick in the league for over a decade? Find your best skills and master them. Now in his 15th season, LA Clippers reserve forward Nicolas Batum goes absolutely nuclear from downtown, spotting up from deep in the blink of an eye and burying a difficult jumper despite strong coverage. Batum attempted seven field goals — all from beyond the arc — and connected on every single one, becoming the first Clipper player to shoot flawlessly from three-point land on at least seven attempts. Batum collected 22 points to go with five rebounds and a steal in the November 15, 2022 battle against the Dallas Mavericks.

As one of the more athletic teams in the league, the Memphis Grizzlies continue to soar to new heights. One of the linchpins of the young Memphis core is Brandon Clarke, who puts his jumping ability on display against the Detroit Pistons when he catches an alley-oop lob from Tyus Jones and deposits the layup at eye level with the rim. The fourth-year forward lit it up off the bench, scoring 17 points in 24 minutes on 7 of 8 shooting while adding seven rebounds and two assists in the Grizzlies’ 114-103 victory on December 9, 2022.

Brandon Clarke

With Cade Cunningham’s sophomore season cut short due to injury, the Detroit Pistons need someone to step up and make a consistent offensive impact. Enter Alec Burks. The veteran guard — now in his 11th NBA season and first with the Pistons — grabs a pass at the top of the key and drills a long straightaway jumper even with Cole Anthony draped all over him. Burks barely missed against the Orlando Magic, converting 10 of 11 field goals for 32 points to go along with two rebounds, four assists, two steals and six triples in seven attempts in Detroit’s 121-101 win on December 28, 2022.
