When the defense knows you’re money from downtown, any pump fake is a threat. Chicago Sky rookie Dana Evans  dribbles into position at the top of the arc, loses her defender with a juicy ball fake, then rains down a triple in a June 19, 2021 win over the Connecticut Sun.

A little full-court pressure goes a long way. Jackie Young of the Las Vegas Aces camps out in the passing lane as the Dallas Wings look to inbound the ball, then leaps through the air for the interception. The third-year guard then dishes to a teammate and crashes the net for a put back as the third quarter of their September 13, 2021 contest draws to a close.

Better get used to watching Michaela Onyenwere step up. In the first quarter of her first WNBA contest, the New York Liberty guard capitalizes on a passive defense and buries the first bucket of her career. Onyenwere finished the debut with 18 points and a victory in the May 14, 2021 matchup against the Indiana Fever.

Underestimate Ezi Magbegor’s ability to recover on defense at your own risk. After closing out to defend a potential mid-range shot attempt, the Seattle Storm center regains her momentum to catch up with and crush a Minnesota Lynx layup attempt on May 28, 2021.

Keeping Napheesa Collier out of the paint is no small task. The Minnesota Lynx forward breaks her defender down with a crossover out at the perimeter before bullying her way to an up-and-under scoop shot. Collier logged 22 points, six boards, seven assists and four steals in the September 12, 2021 win over the Indiana Fever.

When you hoop at this level, there’s always somebody waiting with a challenge at the rim. Chicago Sky guard Kahleah Copper catches a pass from Candace Parker, heads straight to the bucket, then outmanoeuvers Dallas Wings big Charli Collier with an up-and-under reverse layup on June 30, 2021. Copper poured in 17 points in the win.

Kayla McBride is a threat from anywhere on the court. The Minnesota Lynx forward sizes up her perimeter defender with a series of dribble moves before stepping back into a quick-release triple from way behind the line. McBride finished with 12 points in the September 12, 2021 victory against the Indiana Fever.

After setting a high screen for New York Liberty teammate Sabrina Ionescu, Natasha Howard catches a pass in stride then immediately hits her defender with a half-spin and caps the possession off with a fadeaway jumper. Howard finished the September 15, 2021 matchup against the Connecticut Sun with 25 points, eight boards and three blocks.

DeWanna Bonner’s length makes her a tough check on the best of days but it’s the skillset that makes her borderline unstoppable. The Connecticut Sun forward torments her Minnesota Lynx defender with a series of hesis and crossovers before spinning into an untouchable fadeaway on August 19, 2021. The veteran put up 31 points and 11 rebounds in the win.

Covering ball handlers as electric as Kelsey Mitchell is next to impossible. The Indiana Fever guard takes her defender off the dribble, then steps back into a quick-release jumper. Mitchell finished the season opening tilt against the New York Liberty with 23 points on May 14, 2021.

There’s nothing more satisfying than watching teammates work in perfect lockstep. Chicago Sky guard Allie Quigley pulls down a defensive rebound in an August 15, 2021 contest against the Seattle Storm then immediately laces a full-court outlet pass to a streaking Diamond DeShields, who catches the rock in stride and caps off the break with an easy two.

The body control it takes to finish lobs as consistently as Brianna Turner is hard to comprehend. The Phoenix Mercury center cuts hard to the hoop as teammate Diana Taurasi floats an entry pass into the paint from half-court, then leaps into the air, rotates 180 degrees and lays in the bucket before the defense knows what hit them. Turner finished with 13 points, 10 boards and three blocks in the May 14, 2021 win over the Minnesota Lynx.

Give DiJonai Carrington a lane and she’ll take it straight to the hoop. After battling for control of the ball in the open court, the Connecticut Sun wing attacks a gap against the New York Liberty and buries a contested finger roll in a July 11, 2021 win.

Hoopers like Natasha Cloud make things happen. After sizing up her defender out on the perimeter, the Washington Mystics guard attacks the paint, starts to back her opponent down toward the hoop  but then pulls one over on everybody by lateraling a bounce-pass to a cutting Sydney Wiese under the hoop for two on August 26, 2021.

Spend enough time honing your craft and the shooter's bounce is bound to follow. New York Liberty rookie DiDi Richards drives against Seattle Storm center Mercedes Russell, draws her out of position with some crafty footwork then banks home a tough scoop layup through contact on August 20, 2021.

Fearless hoopers thrive under pressure. Down a pair in the final seconds of regulation, Seattle Storm guard Jordin Canada catches a hand-off from teammate Breanna Stewart in the corner and heads straight to the rim for a game-tying floater. Canada finished with 14 points in the May 22, 2021 overtime win against the Dallas Wings.

Even if you know it’s coming, stopping a Myisha Hines-Allen drive attempt is an unenviable task. After catching a pass out on the perimeter, the powerful Washington Mystics forward puts her shoulder down and heads straight to the rack for a contested two. Hines-Allen finished with 16 in the August 26, 2021 matchup against the Dallas Wings.

Katie Lou Samuelson’s range knows no bounds. The Seattle Storm forward rushes the ball up the court in the final seconds of a third quarter, ducks under her leaping defender, and buries a three from half-court in a May 18, 2021 battle against the Las Vegas Aces.

If there’s an open teammate on the floor, count on Layshia Clarendon to find them. The Minnesota Lynx guard pushes the ball up the floor against the New York Liberty, then reaches around their defender to hit Sylvia Fowles with a picture-perfect bounce pass on August 15, 2021.

Blocking shots from the help side is one thing — backpedaling to keep up with a guard in transition and still managing to send an attempt packing is something else entirely. Dallas Wings center Awak Kuier keeps up with Los Angeles Sparks sophomore Te’a Cooper and thwarts her fastbreak layup in a June 1, 2021 victory.

Dallas Wings guard Allisha Gray hounds Sabrina Ionescu as she looks to get off a game-winning jumper, then blocks the attempt as the final horn sounds. Gray finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds in the September 11, 2021 win over the New York Liberty, clinching a spot in the postseason.

Test Monique Billings in the paint at your own risk. The Atlanta Dream forward tracks a Dallas Wings entry pass, shuffles into position from the help side, then rises up to pulverize a layup attempt on September 5, 2021. Billings added 12 points and 14 boards in the win.

The game’s best slashers make getting to the hoop look easy. Atlanta Dream guard Odyssey Sims sends her check packing with a hesitation dribble before slicing into the paint for a seamless scoop shot over the outstretched arm of Indiana Fever center Teaira McCowan. Atlanta Dream guard Tiffany Hayes runs her defender off a screen then splits the help side with a dramatic spin and wills home a tough layup over Indiana Fever shot blocker Teaira McCowan.
